Welcome to the FamiBoards StarTopic for Nintendo General Discussions for the month of November of the year 2021.

Wow, it’s finally my turn to make a Nintendo discussion thread! Hope I don’t mess it up!

What is the purpose of this thread?

This thread is, ostensibly, a conversation about Nintendo. However, anyone who has spent any time here will tell you: it’s much more than that. The Nintendo General Discussion thread is a place to hang out and talk to friendly folks from all different walks of life about a wide range of subjects. Obviously, Nintendo is the glue that holds us together, but the conversation here can vary wildly in topic. From the goings-on of our personal lives, to what fast food sandwiches we enjoy most. There is very little that could be considered off-topic in this thread.

So, monthly threads, huh?

This was put to a vote in the previous ST, and “monthly threads” won by a pretty solid landslide. This allows much easier navigation through previous threads. For example, if you wanted to see how people reacted to a news item in a particular month, it’d be much easier to track down the exact moment in time when the threads are broken out monthly. This also allows for whoever is responsible for STs to know exactly when to have the thread ready by and when to post them. For example, the bozo responsible for |ST Nov. 2021| was able to have this ready to go at the exact second he knew it would be needed! Very convenient.

Are we allowed to discuss games in a way that might spoil the game for someone who hasn’t played it!

Sure! However, please make ample use of FamiBoards’ wonderful spoiler tags! If there is something you’re not sure constitutes a spoiler, it is always better to stay on the safe side and use them. You never know who is trying to go into a game as blindly as possible, so sometimes even late-game mechanics of a newly released video game might be better placed under a spoiler tag than left in the open. There are no hard guidelines or timeframes for when something no longer constitutes a spoiler, so use your common sense and discretion.

Enough beating around the proverbial bush, what’s going on with Nintendo?

Well, I’m glad you asked! It is now November 1st, 2021 as of this posting. In just under 2 weeks, Nintendo is publishing the latest in Atlus/Sega’s Shin Megami Tensei series, Shin Megami Tensei V. While we welcome all discussions of games here, we also have a dedicated thread for this game, which you can find here. Later in the month, another game featuring grotesque demons you can command is Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, which are remakes of the original fourth generation Pokémon games, Diamond and Pearl. You can discuss these in this very thread, or the dedicated thread here.

Outside of that, later this very week, Nintendo will be dropping their latest financial report, covering the quarter of July/August/September. This may also contain some preliminary sales data for the game whose success we’re all rooting for, Metroid Dread, though that game did come out in October, so I can’t say for sure we’ll learn anything.

Have you played Metroid Dread? It’s great! There’s a demo if you’d like to try it.

There’s also the recently released Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack, which features Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis games. While there’s plenty of discussion of the Expansion Pack here, we have a great thread for that, too.

Included in that Expansion Pack is the upcoming DLC for Animal Crossing New Horizons, titled Happy Home Paradise, which releases on November 5th, the same day as the 2.0 update. This update will ensure that the creator of Nintendo General Discussion |ST Nov. 2021| will probably be very preoccupied for a lot of this month. Oops!

Finally, the end of last month saw the somewhat surprise release of Nintendo’s latest mobile effort, a surprisingly fun pedometer app called Pikmin Bloom.

Am I welcome here? This thread can be a little intimidating...

The short answer is “yes.” The long answer is “absolutely.” As the OP for this, the second Nintendo General Discussion ST for FamiBoards, let me make this perfectly clear: So long as you don’t maliciously cause any trouble (please refer to FamiBoard’s guidelines regarding behaviour) you’re welcome to stay here, chat, and have a good time. Introduce yourself! We’d love to have more folks hanging out in the thread here. No matter who you are, where you’re from, or what games you like, you’re always more than welcome in this thread!

Even if I like Xenoblade Chronicles 2?

Oh, no, in that case, please leave.

Really?

No, I’m just kidding! But be sure you don’t post any images of the characters that could get you in trouble. Some people read this thread at work or in public!

What about Directs? Can this thread act as some sort of Nintendo Direct Speculation thread?

Sure! FOR NOW…

Wait, what do you mean “for now?”

You’ll see soon enough.

Earlier you conveniently linked to some game-specific discussion threads. Are there any others?

Absolutely! Excuse me as I shamelessly copy and paste the wonderful list by @mazi from last month’s ST and paste it below.

If there are any threads you think should be in this list, shoot me a PM and I’ll add it in!

Got a link to the previous Nintendo General Discussion ST?

Do I ever!!

Wow Derachi, this ST is pretty good! Got anyone you want to thank?

Wow, hypothetical question asker, thanks for complimenting my ST. It feels really good to know that someone I made up liked my work here.

I do have a number of people I’d like to thank! The first is @mazi, for creating the first General Discussion ST here on this beautiful website we call home. Of course, this series of threads is a continuation of a series of threads found elsewhere, which was all initially started by @Kevin360, and was continued by @Mina, @Raccoon, @Phendrift, @Meelow, @Skittzo, @Hero of Legend, @reconceptualize, @BozPaggs, @Brofield, @MondoMega, @wookiee, @hologram, @Sadist, and of course @bellydrum, who I’d also like to thank for being instrumental in getting this website going. I’d love to thank the admin staff and mods of FamiBoards as well, for keeping this place safe and clean.

Lastly, I’d like to take a minute to thank… well, you. Yeah, you, reading this. Look: life can be a lot. We all come from around the world, with our own problems, stresses, and struggles. I don’t need to explain that the last 20-ish months have been particularly rough for a lot of people. I’ve considered myself very lucky to have this group of people, in this thread right now, to be there. A group I don’t hesitate to call my friends. There’s a socially therapeutic benefit to digitally shooting the breeze, and I don’t think I’m alone when I say this group of people has been a monumentally positive influence to my mental wellbeing. So… thanks, Fam. Believe me when I say my life is better because it has you in it.

Wait, hold up, what’s with the thread title?

Oh it’s a Subway joke!

OG Direct OP approved.

Yeah, I've not tried more than a few minutes of Ocarina, but zero crash issues with several hours on Star Fox, Yoshi, and MK64.

Tis the season!
I basically just played OoT and finished water temple this weekend, haven't really gone skultula, big Poe or heart pieces collecting spree, just the ones on my way, no sequence breaking, bug exploiting or anything fancy, just got epona and big goron sword outside of following the story path. So maybe one of these things I have not focused on could be bugged and causing troubles for those.

I'm going to ask this question over in the Expansion pass thread, but I'll ask it here, too:

Anybody getting crashes when playing Ocarina of Time through NSO?

I ask because, in some of the comments on articles about the NSO video now being Nintendo's most disliked of all time, I'm seeing some claims that a) performance is terrible and b) crashes are a regular occurrence.
Only time I saw a crash was when I saw someone try the deku stick as adult link glitch being used in a vid

My N64 controller is chilling somewhere in Speyer, which is a 4h car ride away from where I live.

That's pretty good, considering my luck with importing game related stuff.

I think it was stated that it was fake/misinformation that OoT crashed on NSO.
Personally I have played 7 hours, I'm at the Fire Temple, got 0 crash.
Honestly, beyond the awful Water Temple room, I think N64 emulation on NSO is very great lol.
Much much better than on Wii U. Less input lag (I know there's some but I can't notice it personally) and no ugly dark filter. And I personally think that the performance is flawless ? Didn't notice anything bad, it seems constant for me.

Also, it's especially good for us Europeans because finally we can play OoT N64 in 60hz. Can't wait for Paper Mario 64 in 60hz. I think it might heavily change the way I consider this game (always thought it was way too slow, coming from TTYD, but as a kid I didn't know what 50hz/60hz was. Only ever played it in 50hz, including on the Wii U VC)

Okay let's pretend I'm really really old and out of touch, what exactly is an NFT? Is it really just an object that has like a code embedded in it that unlocks some kind of digital content?

It's short for "Neat Fresh Token". You put it on your unique sub before you put it into your company fridge so your coworkers don't eat it.

Right - like I said, I've not spent much time on Ocarina, but I was genuinely curious if crashes were a real issue. Seeing some comments on websites suggesting they are, but now I'm suspicious that people have seen the engineered crashes and are now reiterating this stuff in bad faith or ignorance.

Frustrating, because there are real issues we could talk about, which range from things which should be present through to minor issues which, for the sake of accuracy, could be added or improved (expansion pak toggle! button mapping! Input lag! Transparency effects and fog rendering! Texture filtering!). Instead we've got YouTube and mainstream outlets amplifying the lazy story, which is the hyperbolic anger of a misinformed minority.

That's not to say criticism isn't warranted, or that it shouldn't be aired; but if criticism is founded on a non-issue or a heavily exaggerated issue, then it ceases to have much meaning.

It's a jpeg that you can buy

I see, so it's an edible Subway amiibo?

You gotta talk to OP about this, he's an expert on at least half of it.

All jokes aside, it's basically just a way to mark and identify things as "authentic". Derachi could sell you an NFT of the picture in the OP and then you'd "own" it and could sell it to someone else. But there's little you could do about me for example copying the image and sending it to all my phone contacts. The technical side is obviously more complex.

|ST02 Nov. 2021| is such a mess of zeroes and twos
I heavily disagree with the trailing 0 — nothing’s wrong with ST2! but I do like the numbers like some sort of nightmare number demon

From what I understand it’s some cryptocurrency based thing that lets you “own” a digital good using “blockchain technology.” The boom nature of cryptocurrency has a lot of people throwing a lot of money at, what boils down to, the concept of “owning” a JPEG. By using cryptocurrency, it is ruinous to the environment as crypto mining uses a ludicrous amount of electricity. Also worth pointing out that even though one might “own” a JPEG, it doesn’t stop someone else from, say, saving it to their own hard drive.

Frankly it reeks of scam. It’s trying to create scarcity out of digital files, which have an intrinsically infinite supply. I don’t think “ownership” is inherently a bad idea but in the NFT case you don’t actually get anything out of it because there’s nothing with any intrinsic value. Ostensibly the only thing that changes if someone buys an NFT is that the NFT owner becomes the answer to the question “who owns this.” The people making them are looking to become rich. The people buying them have been convinced or have convinced themselves these will be worth something someday and they too will become rich.

If I’m gonna put numbers in the ST, I am going to at least future proof it by giving it 2 digits like that haha
noooooooooo don’t do it that’s the opposite of future proof

let the numbers be organic!!

Nothing is organic!!!! The world is structural chaos!!! LET THE DIGITS BE LOCKED

Ahem I’ll take your point into consideration

|ST2 Nov. ‘21|

you know what, whoever said we should shorten the year to two digits might be onto something

do we codify punctuation?

Okay if we’re adding numbers and no unnecessary digits than |ST2 Nov. ‘21| is gonna be it because at least there’s less mess and less confusion about what every number is

Random thought, but I hope we see whatever Next Level Games is working on next year. Maybe it can even come out in 2022!
I'd be really happy if it were a new Mario strikers, been waiting on a new one for a long time, and switch really needs some good football/soccer games, don't care if more arcady or more simulation like, just about anything really.

Thank you, that is an excellent explanation.

Amazing ST, Derachi!

On a completely and utterly unrelated note, what do you all prefer- crushed ice or cubed ice?
I suppose it depends on what I’m using the ice for. Cubes are good for drinks you don’t want watered down as quick or for keeping a cooler cold longer. On the other hand, if I’m having a ‘stiff’ iced Americano, I don’t mind the ice melting quicker. Crushed ice also works pretty nice in insulated cups (like a Yeti for example.)

Right - like I said, I've not spent much time on Ocarina, but I was genuinely curious if crashes were a real issue. Not to keep beating my “I agree with MisterSpo” drum, but again—well said. There is stuff that can be worked on to make the experience better or more accurate, but the discourse from the community (and the clickbait articles and videos jumping on the anti-hype train) are so overblown and exaggerated that it feels like any real requests from the people who have actually tried the Expansion Pass get buried in all the crap.

With the way it’s being portrayed currently, you’d think NSO N64 came out in a worse state than the console versions of Cyberpunk 2077.
