Why does this thread exist?
With the increase of digital sales worldwide, a lot of publishers are trying to resurrect old titles so people can play them in modern consoles.
Arcade Archives, Sega Ages, Konami collections, Capcom collections and so on.
Like most of things nowadays, many of them are overlooked, so I have made this thread to list and discuss them. There are many people waiting that publishers release again the favorite games from their childhood.

What years are considered Retro?
Everyone have a diferent opinion from post-2005, so I'll look case by case. PSP, DS or Wii are a thin line.
Maybe there will be a game that it's considered retro for people who visit the thread in 2025 and not now.

How are companies releasing their games?
Publishers and developers are bringing the old classics in many ways:

  • Port: Releasing the original game with minimal changes
  • Remaster: Improving the original game, sometimes including new features
  • Remake: Creating a new version of the original game since zero
  • Revival: Forgotten games are released many years later for the first time or games coming back after >10 years keeping the old formula.

I'll try to make different tables by months. So, we don't have a huge table that takes up half of the thread.

Just want to chime in that if you like shmups or other arcade games there are some great ones on here. The psikyo collections, last resort, aerofighters, pulstar, cave games etc.

The ACA archive series are all fantastic. I own a ton of their neogeo and arcade games. Johnny's turbo arcade ports are great as well.

Tons of great options on the system if you like em!

I grabbed the Castlevania Anniversary Collection a while ago when it was really cheap, will be my first time playing most of those games, I've only played the Igavanias and IV.

I'm itching to get the GBA Collection too, but will wait until it's on sale since I wouldnt play them right now. Hope they will patch in some filters by the time I get to it.

Thank you for the distinction between port/remaster/remake. I can understand why they're often used interchangeably, but I hope that with enough course correction that line of thinking stops and makes it easier to differentiate between releases.

Sincerely hope more Gamecube games beyond Super Monkey Ball get announced/released soon.

Also, not sure if it belongs here but apparently a working Saturn Emulator was found in the code of the recent Guardian Force port for Switch.

Good to know. Supposedly, the Saturn Tribute games have +8 frames of input lag because of this. We'll see if they can fix it.

There's a new video of the Cotton sequel, Cotton Rock'n'Roll. It's not a retro game but it's a sequel of a retro IP keeping the old gameplay.

It'll release this Christmas in Japan, zero news about a Western launch for now.
Umihara Kawase character is playable in the game.

Arcade Archives game of this week is Rally X.

One of the first arcade games of Namco. They released 4 Namco games on the last 4 weeks.
They must have gotten some kind of agreement.

More news: Microids just announced a new game of Joe & Mac. They're going to remake the arcade levels and make new ones.

I'm thinking to add a new type of games named Revival. A lot of games are coming back after >10 years keeping the old formula.
Cruis’n Blast, Street of Rage 4, Sonic Mania, New Pokemon Snap, Ghost 'n Goblins Resurrection, etc.

Missing the Turrican Flashback (released 29th January 2021) & Turrican Anthology Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 (release date unknown).

Note :
The compilations are being done by Ratalaika Games, ININ Games and the Factor 5 team at Epic Games Cologne. The « unknown » release date for the both Anthology volumes is because the devs are adding a new function for all the games and Factor 5 -who is directly working on the Score Attack games- isn’t satisfied with the actual status of the games and restarted the Score Attack games from scratch.

Here’s the content :
Turrican Flashback :
Turrican I (Amiga, 1990)
Turrican II (Amiga, 1991)
Super Turrican (SNES, 1993)
Mega Turrican (Genesis, 1994)

Turrican Anthology Vol. 1 :
Turrican 1 (Amiga, 1990)
Turrican 2 (Amiga, 1991)
Super Turrican (SNES, 1993)
Super Turrican Director's Cut (Analogue SuperNT, 7th February 2018)
Mega Turrican Score Attack (Genesis/Mega Drive - 2021/2022)

Turrican Anthology Vol. 2 :
Turrican 3 (Amiga, 1993)
Mega Turrican (Genesis, 1994)
Mega Turrican Director's Cut (Genesis/Mega Drive, 2021/2022)
Super Turrican 2 (SNES, 1995)
Super Turrican 1 Score Attack (SNES, 2021/2022)

EDIT :
Awesome thread by the way, definitly watching it :)

Mentioned this elsewhere but I would love for Capcom to port the Gamecube versions of Resident Evil 2 & 3 to Switch, just update the assets and boom!

Also, I still need to pick up James Pond on Switch one day

This promise to be a very useful thread for me.

tolkir I didn't had the chance to thank you for all your great efforts on the eshop threads due to me leaving Era after the whole Media Create fiasco so I take the chance to do so now:

Thank you!

Hoshi Wo Miru Hito (1987, Hot-B), aka StarGazer on the Famicom, has been re-released on the Japanese Switch eShop.
It is also known as one of the worst, if not THE worst JRPG of all time. The studio preferred to outsource the game to a single developper, who had zero experience in JRPGs and had to rush everything with an almost impossible deadline. The studio wanted to surf on the Dragon Quest ride and… well, it didn’t end well (keep in mind that JRPGs were a new thing back then)

It is also known as the « Legendary shit game » in Japan (Densetsu no Kusoge). It is amazing how bad it is, on every single point. You should give a watch to the Games Done Quick speedrun of the game ^^

Fun Fact: The team working on that port did an actual fan-art competition (Last option on the top menu) for creating border art.
I even made a joke submission for it, though it didn't make the finals.

You can at least see the devs considering it, though. (look beside the person holding their hand up towards one of the entries.)

Amazing ! I wasn’t aware of this !
I really wished they did at least an english translation. From what I heard, the game was about to be released in all region eShops but at the very last moment, the website displayed a message that the game would be a Japan only exclusive.

Looks like we're going to have a new Virtual Console by Hamster.

Are Enix SNES games getting re-released finally? We'll see.

In other news, two more Cotton games announced for the next week.

Thought of the day:

I'm still disappointed that Arcade Archive wasn't able to finish up the Nintendo-developed Arcade ports. They really seemed to be rolling along there for a while, but I'm feeling pretty certain that they've closed that door at this point.

I mean, I do understand that Nintendo probably isn't keen to highlight their uber-early, super-uncreative "clone"-era by pasting up like Block Fever and SF-HiSplitter for everyone to see.

...and I can definitely understand why Monkey Magic will most likely never see the light of day again.

But it would be nice to see them at least throw Sheriff and Arm Wrestling up on the service. Maybe Radar Scope and Space Firebird as well just for completeness. Let's face it, this is probably one of the best chances we'll have to get official re-releases of these things and seems a shame to leave some on the chopping block.

At the very least, I'm thrilled that they finally obliged in releasing official versions of the arcade Punch-Out games, DK Trilogy, and even Sky Skipper (which is alot more fun that I imagined it would be). Pretty half-and-half on the Vs. System library as I imagine most people are, but at least it's mostly there for posterity.

My favorite experience from this - I put about a dozen hours into Punch-Out and Super Punch-Out on Switch in order to be able to 1CC (through Sandman) them on any difficulty. Recently was traveling with my family and stopped at one of the largest arcades in America on a vacation. Weaving through isles to find the Punch-Out machine, and whooping it live as a result of the effort felt pretty sweet, let me tell you. Had a few looking over the shoulder to see after Kid Quick, which seems to be the stopping-block for a lot of folks.

It's almost beyond parody to me that literally hours before my article on the death of piecemeal reissues was to go live Hamster pretty much ends up starting their own form of Virtual Console. Very curious to see how it goes down, since I don't think people will be happy if they charge 800 yen for FC games... SNES/PCE though? I'll buy all the PCE games in the world. There's a good potential for it to be like Project EGG, and hopefully be an expansive library of classic games on PS4/Switch... But I also worry we'll get boring done to death games like NES Gradius/Pac-Man and the like.

Would love to see stuff like Terra Cresta II on this though.

But may I ask why the Squaresoft trademark would relate to Enix stuff? Two of the three games in the soul blazer trilogy have pretty immovable legal issues (Soul Blazer's OST, Gaia's art) that require external parties, so I doubt it could be for that... Unless it's The Creation of Heaven and Earth, which I don't think has as many issues save for Nintendo's translation.

I don't think there's too much left for Nintendo's lineup, to be blunt. Most of their big VS games are all out and I can't think of any outside of light gun titles that scream "must-port". Their pre-DK era isn't really good and outside of Radar Scope/Sheriff I don't think any would be noteworthy from a historical POV. Don't know why Monkey Magic in particular would be problematic, unless it's just how unsettling the whole game looks, but I'd give that as much odds as Space Firebird (As in, next to none).

I would also agree with you on Arm Wrestling, but after playing it at Galloping Ghost... Yeah, if that came to switch all the Joy-Cons on earth would drift at once, it's VERY taxing to mash the stick, to the point it physically tired me out. Turbo could help for the button mashing bits, but constantly jamming on the stick might not be something Nintendo wants people to do. :p

OG MM has pretty fine input control imo, but it gets an awful audio lag if you use the home menu button a lot. It's not as solid as NSO/VC though, but it's still very playable. Mega Man X does have irritating, but doable input lag on X1-3 but X4-8 are all native ports and play like butter, and Zero/ZX is like the X4-X8 ports, so every game is butter in that compilation.

For Monkey Magic, it's really just the imagery of knocking out a Monkey's teeth before turning his eyes into "x"s while being surrounded by skulls that makes me think it has a low chance. It may be primitive arcade graphics, but that description alone sure sounds like something modern Nintendo would shy away from. Maybe not. Pretty meaningless either way, since it's a totally unremarkable breakout clone beyond that, eh.

And yeah, I totally hear ya on Arm Wrestling. I always thought that tiring aspect was by-design to really make you feel like you were in a physical contest. It really doesn't work great without an arcade stick either way. But it does close out the Takeda Punch-Out trilogy to some degree....

I assume, however, that it is mostly ignored because it was never released in Japan, which always appears as something NOJ sees as a less relevant release for one reason or another when you look at their history.

Amazing thread.

I’d love to see all those G-mode RPGs get translated, but I doubt that will ever happen.

I’m ashamed to say that I currently have more of Hamster’s ACA/Arcade Archive releases than any reasonable person should, lol. It really becomes a headache when you have to scroll through 40+ lines of games to find stuff on the Switch (obviously it’s not all ACA games). I’m glad to see that they’ll be branching out into console releases too, that could be really interesting.

The Switch is just crazy. Every time I take a moment to breathe, another dozen retro games I want have been released.

How is the Mega Man ZX collection on Switch? I heard the OG and X ones had pretty bad input lag on Switch so I haven't picked them up.
They are native ports and not emulation, so the input latency is going to be as low or high as your displays inherent latency or what controller you use

'Sup fellow retro-friends.

I'm hoping it's not totally finished! Would love to see stuff like Sheriff, Radar Scope, and even Vs Mach Rider.

In any case, it's great that we got the original arcade Donkey Kong, both arcade Punch-Outs, and most impressive of all, Sky Skipper! It's pretty incredible that they were able to get that, given how few machines of it remain.

Oh that's sweet for ZX Col. and X4-X6 since those are the ones I'd be playing the most anyways. Makes it kinda annoying that they needlessly split the X collection in 2 though.

I must admit, I'm not familiar with the differences - what is changed for Vs Mach Rider over the NES game?

From what I understand, it's very similar to the endurance course from the NES original. Everytime you complete a level, you get a screen of Mach Rider that gradually goes away to reveal a woman, who many speculate to be Mach Rider... that's something that Mach Rider's planned appearance in Captain Rainbow was going to elaborate on.

In short, not much, but it's neat!
