so anyone else see the new sitch patent? people think its the switch pro but i think its a zelda tears of the kingdom oled special edition. not a switch pro. nintendo wont ever do a pro switch. they will just milk the current switch as long as they can.

It would be very strange if they patented a special TotK Oled. Especially since it is still an Oled with other colors, and the Oled already has its own patents for a long time.

That patent may not be drake, or it may be. Or maybe it's a different product.

But I am 100% sure that it would not be a recolor of the oled.

Didn't they submit similar patents for Pokemon and Splatoon OLED?

Not that I know of. Generally you can only patent something that either has a different mode of operation or different legal bounds from a previous patent. AFAIK they never try to patent new aesthetic designs.

Samsung 5nm should be similar in performance to tsmc 7 though, right?
Yes, at frequencies ≤ 1.8 GHz.
But at frequencies > 1.8 GHz, Samsung's 5LPE process node is ~20% to ~25% less power efficient compared to TSMC's N7/N7P process node.
Geekerwan's review suggests the Cortex-A77 on the Snapdragon 865 is a bit more performant and power efficient compared to the Cortex-A78 on the Snapdragon 888.

(I speculate the Cortex-A78 on TSMC's N6 process node lies between the Cortex-A77 on TSMC's N7P process node and the Cortex-A78 on TSMC's N5 process node.)

Well, we are at december.

Between now and February I think is the deadline for some factory report/leaks by Bloomberg/Nikkei IF new HW will be release by May with Zelda TOTK.

Hopefully we will get news soon.

I wonder if Nintendo would try harder to hold off potential leaks before the end of xmas, or I am thinking too much?

I think it's reasonable, it makes sense to me too.
I tend to find the absolute lack of any recent info/rumor from insiders or anyone else in the industry a bit suspicious, like some of them may have some info but they probably can't openly talk about it anymore.

We're seemingly approaching the frame time where factory leaks and such could happen so there are two outcomes:
  • Nintendo is trying harder than ever to prevent any leak or anything substantial enough to spread before they reveal the thing like in January (not that unlikely imo)
  • Drake isn't even coming in 2023 and I should definitely stop checking this thread for good.

I gotta admit I'm not a really big fan of this second outcome 😞

While I definitely don't think they want to officially talk about anything this month, I think it's probably past the time that anything unofficial would have much influence on the big holiday buyers. The person buying a Mario Kart 8 system for their kids a couple weeks before Christmas isn't going to check on the factory uncles or latest Bloomberg reports first.

if I remember correctly a lot of factories in China slow down greatly between now and February. so there probably won't be too many chances for leaks

perfect for a 1.78GHz cpu clock!

Hey OldPuck, it's me again.
Oh hey, Anonymous Lurker, how is it going?
Replying to this old summary post to ask if it's really needed for most of it to be readable only by registered users? It covers enough I wish I could easily link to it when people completely out of the loop start wondering about if there's any new hardware coming soon, which happens all the time at the Switch daily questions thread at Reddit.

I can open it up. Originally, I put it to registered users because there had just been a Chinese forum "leaker" who simply copied and pasted a different summary post as a fake leak, but I think that danger is low. Give me a couple minutes to make sure there is nothing egregiously out of date on it

If you meant specifically the timestamp in the link, that's Ultra Performancing 640x480, so still only 1/3 of a 720p resolution. The first minute of the video has some Ultra Performance 720p going on. But it's hard to imagine many games beyond the future Arks (original Switch version) going to even that extreme often.
I had no idea YouTube made a link with the timestamp I was on, lol. I was mostly referring to the shots of Death Stranding and Control at 427x240 being DLSS’d up to 720p

Significant.

As most of those posts say: consider that info accurate until an update is given. That's all I'll say on the matter.

No problem at all if you don't want to say, of course, but out of curiosity - have any of those three games you mention planning to be released in H1 2023 regardless of next Switch timelines been announced yet?

This is less me wondering about the next Switch timing and me more wondering if there's three sizable games coming out in H1 2023 from third party developers, as the current lineup is pretty light and I'm expecting announcements.

I'm a H2 2023 person on the new Switch, but we'll get a better picture by the late winter/early spring direct on what their 2023 H2 lineup looks like based on what they slot in for H1. They also usually preview a few H2 games in their H1 direct.

It seems China is now easing restriction following recent protests.

Also Foxconn moved part of Switch production to Vietnam 3 years ago to avoid the trade war. Japan-based Hosiden is also a manufacturing partner, not sure to what extent.

I'd say Nintendo has wiggle room to avoid major issues when it comes to production.

Personally, I'm not expecting major factory leaks. Nintendo is like the Joe Pesci of NDAs.

@JoshuaJSlone and anyone else who might care. I've made the old summary post public. You should be able to link it whereever you like.

I've also given it an update. I've updated the language in some places to be clearer. I've pointed at @LiC's excellent NVN2 summary post, and my own Drake dev timeline post. I've updated the clock estimates to be in line with @Thraktor's analysis, as well as include the FDE discovery.

Edit: It's here, by the way

"noooo don't misconstrue natedrake's words, it's annoying for him to be misinterpreted all the time"

meanwhile natedrake, greatly enjoying it:

This device isn’t coming with Zelda. Too many negative signals. Ah well.

If the device is cancelled or pushed back indefinitely then I’d be fuming if I were a dev having worked on a game for 18 months.

the optimistic read, combined with him alleging not to know of any change, is that this is not a hard successor and one or more tx1 models will remain on shelves and get nintendo games for many remaining years

the pessimistic read, however, is totally that it got canned lmao

The Switch will be Nintendo's last console created ad infinitum until the heatdeath of the universe.

...is what I will believe unironically starting April 1st, 2023. Until then, it's just another manic monday

E: /s dang, it really is a bad idea to shitpost in this thread

If you're not reading it as just banter, then the implication of "or three" means new hardware in 2025 which is a stretch.

Or, he just means Nintendo could start charging $70 in three years.

What the hell are you people reading? He's saying Nintendo won't raise their game prices for 3 years...

What exactly does that have to do with anything?

Everyone saying this thing got canned: isn't it vastly more likely it got delayed? Why jump to canceled?

And to clarify, I haven't seen any compelling evidence that it's been delayed or canceled. Just wondering.

First stage of grief: Denial.
Could also be cancelled and the next hardware will be in 3 years or more. Maybe until 2028. In the meanwhile they can keep refreshing the Switch with more Special Editions, everyone loves those, right? Next one will be for Zelda, then one for the new Mario game, and then who knows? One for ARMS 2? Another Animal Crossing one? More Pokemon SE? The sky is the limit!

Or the crossgen period with the actual prices was expected to end in three years

I guess it depends how long the delay would be but my take is that you're right

I sort of use canned as shorthand for the product launch intended for H1 2023 being cancelled

I swear to god it feels like some of you are so anxious that the slightest breeze near your ear which sounds remotely like the word "delay" will send you into a panic.

Read the damn tweet thread, nothing he is saying has anything to do with when Drake is launching.

My goodness.

For a Nintendo console to last that long without a more powerful counterpart/successor/revision/whatever sounds... incredibly unrealistic if I'm being honest. It's most likely just cross-gen talk.

Yeah 2025 makes sense for full-fat Drake exclusives to start popping up.

I don't anticipate TotK to be $70 but the next Zelda? I can see it.

I swear to god it feels like some of you are so anxious that the slightest breeze near your ear which sounds remotely like the word "delay" will send you into a panic.
Good old confirmation bias, it goes both ways.

how is "tegra x1 will live forever" irrelevent lmfao

I understand your position but it feels like you've swung the other way
