StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

That the digital-sku would lack digital-BC.

It wouldn't be the first case; the PS3 had a similar situation at launch and the DS and Wii lost backwards compatibility with the DSi/Wii Mini restyles.

I still don't understand how a Switch 2 SKU without backwards compatibility can make sense.

If NGSwitch Digital Edition is a possibility it could be a small box or stick like device instead of a tablet
In this case, not only the card reader, but also the joy-con and LCD could be removed, which would reduce the cost of the product, thus lowering the price of the product.
But Nintendo may be hesitant to make a TVmode only device.
Lite was clearly targeted at Animal Crossing and Pokemon users, but it is highly possible that Nintendo thinks that there is no such clearly large customer base for a TVmode only device.

The Wii required special hardware to play GC discs, and the DS likewise required special hardware.

From what we understand, Drakes BC layer will be all software, so there woudnt be any extra costs associated with having it on every model. If there even exists a digital model, which imo is dubious.

He used to publish articles for VGC. However, as others mentioned, it's not the first time he did trollish stuff here at Fami.
I understand why he does it, since many are anxiously waiting for the birds to sing, even if these birds have never guessed anything about the next gen Nintendo...

His is a parody.

marmolade is mocking us for sitting here nervously twiddling our thumbs instead of doing something with our ever shortening time on earth and candidly from a moral position I have to commend it

Well, Nvidia and Nintendo have had years to develop a compatibility layer, so...
Nvidia and Nintendo were actually reenacting the whole plot of Re Zero (the anime) for the past few years, Nintendo was Subaru, Jensen was Puck, Nvidia is the Roswaal Mathers estate, T239 is Emilia, the switch is Beatrice, the left and right Joycon are RAM and REM.

Every time we get no announcement is because someone is returning to a certain point in time to make it go even later for the switch life cycle…

Exactly. Idem launch model ps3 if I remember correctly.

Also, a switch 2 digital without bc makes no sense if you want NSO subscribers upgrade to next gen.

Enough of the marmolade thing. Here's a question, might be off topic but wtv.
If translation layers are so cool, why aren't we using them on pc instead of emulation of retro systems? Are there some cons that are emulation pros?

REM….?? Who’s that?

Whatever this song is, it sucks and should not make the charts. It lacks a melody, good lyrics, everything.

Also regarding the SKUs, Nintendo still makes tons of money with physical games compared to others. There might be two SKUs but they won't go digital only, they would lose a good part of their consumer base. It's a stupid discussion.

Regarding BC, I could imagine they might offer digital only on both SKUs and offer it as a part of NSO, which would technically still be BC for everyone and the same messaging while emphasizing on NG software for the new system, which makes some sense sales wise.
Which tbh I'd be fine with if they would use your gold point registration as ownership to download and play digital version of your formerly physical games.

I believe because there are to many possible hardware configurations. You need to know the exact hardware you are translating from and to.

Edit: and they do exist. Apple Rosetta and Valve Proton are 2 examples.

One day he & I shall meet in-person. He just assumes I look like Luis Figo.
In Spain there was a recurring joke with Luis Figo being called Luis Frigo Pie (a foot-shaped ice cream from the Frigo brand). From now on, I won't be able to avoid imagining you like that 👇

I believe the reason why people aren't out here trying to make compatibility layers that make a PC play console games is because it's just plain impossible if the CPU architecture is different (x86 vs ARM, for example). And even when it is possible, I believe that compatibility layers can take a lot more time and effort to create than emulators. Which I think is how the whole "will Switch 2 have BC?" thing even started; a YouTuber pointed out that making a compatibility layer can be an arduous task when they were going down the list of options Nintendo and Nvidia had for Switch 2 BC, which developed into people thinking "well, if it's hard, they just aren't gonna do it, then."

A lot of x86 to arm layers are translation layers, so there's no impossibility there.

Nvidia and Nintendo have a much easier time because they both have the source for Maxwell shader code and ampere shader code. They're not working blind like emulator developers are and they have the time and financial incentive to do so.

I swear I’ve seen an old Spawncast where Nate showed his face, it wasn’t for the entire episode though.

Or am I completely misremembering?

Switch X2 Xavier at 8N confirmed /s

This talk is interesting, but at this point we have been going around in slight circles for months, topics repeating, that only slight joking and meme-ing on how absurd Nintendo would be for going with something backwards. Hearing that DLSS is a thing this new Switch should most likely/definitely have is exciting, but I kind of want to shell leaks and see what ideas Nintendo has for the design and if they will rework the OS to better support features people want, like system voice chat.

God I hate the super saturated look everybody goes with for ReShade. No respect to the art direction of the game.

EDIT: Just to add some semblance of substance to this discussion, I will say I'm consistently impressed by how well Switch games scale up. Really shows how modern these games - and the Switch - are. PS3 games, these are not. Contrary to what console warriors will tell you.
this is how i imagine the next Legend of Zelda on Switch sucessor will look, a envolved art style based on Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom art style

That's also true but what options do you honestly think they have now? If Nintendo wants to continue with their hybrid approach to the console/handheld market they need to prioritize battery life, in which case ARM wins hands down at the moment, even catching up to architectures like x86-64 in terms of single-core performance year after year. It's the move for NG and potentially even the successor of NG unless they pivot to another type of gaming experience (which, knowing that innovation is somewhat of a priority for Nintendo generation after generation, can absolutely happen).
after Nintendo did Nintendo Switch, is highy unlikely they will go back to a tradicional handheld/home consoles such as DS/Wii, the convinincence of developing for a single console is very good for them and us, allowing then to concentrate all it efforts in order to do masterpiece after masterpiece, a constant cadence of games, and i hope even if Switch sucessor is a massive leap to Switch, Nintendo keep this contant cadence of amazing games on it next hardware

I do wonder how Nintendo is going to solve BC for games that have a locked sub native resolution if the screen is going to be 1080p.

Many games are going to look nasty if devs don’t patch their games. Is there nothing Nvidia can do or does it require to go the lengths Microsoft did with BC?
not only the resolution, but also the framerate, Nintendo need to find a way to make games that have a unstable resolution/framerate(cof cof cof Bayonetta 3, the Hyrule Warriors games), run at a stable resolution/framerate, like a stable 720p/60fps on Bayonetta 3 case

this is just licensing isseus, Nintendo will problaby repload the trailer with new music, that had nothing to do Switch sucessor reveal
That trailer was really well synced with the song, and that was part of the reason it worked so well.

You can't just insert some random music and reupload it.

That’s not how it works, at all.

In Cerny’s words even PS4 to PS5 translation layer was extremely complex and required years of development.
Could this be why the Switch 2 has taken so much to come? Instead of software being a determining factor this time, it’s BC.

In a world where Digital Edition PS5 sales are lackluster and Sony even unified the manufacturing process with a modular disc drive, I don’t see Nintendo ever releasing a digital only SKU. I could see them doing what Sony did with the “Slim” models, maybe make a modular cartridge drive, but I feel like that’s something of an inconvenience that Nintendo wouldn’t do.

Also, random thought: what if the Switch 2 isn’t BC, but you can buy a modular cartridge drive for Switch 1 games?

Marmolade is secretly pyoro

Do you have a link for this news?

It seems strange to me that Nintendo changes the music of a trailer to avoid paying for the renewal of the license and then pays for the license of another song... 🤔

I wonder if this is info/stuff from TGS finally.

...maybe.
Unlikely, I believe Nate posted a few pages back (actually at the pace this thread goes, 'few' is probably inaccurate lol) that there wasn't much interesting new info from TGS, but if I remember correctly he said he had other non-TGS info that he might eventually share, which is what appears is about to happen now 🤞
