StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

Hey could be worse. They could just ship the Switch 1 with a GPU that's soldered to unused PCIe lanes lookin' like this poor Steam Deck abomination. ☠️

Leaked Switch 2 BC model pics!!!

Yeah baby, back on the “they’re going to fucking shove the Switch 1’s GPU is only one of the models” rumor. Easily the worst rumor I have seen in a minute.

Trying to imagine redesigning the entire system just to find a spot to shove in the fucking Switch 1 GPU because shader translation is literally impossible I guess.
Clearly the new gimmick for Switch 2 is an HDMI In port built into the tablet— and for BC you'll have to lug around a docked Switch hooked up to a car battery.

Heavy? My Ipad Mini is quite light.
Okay? I own several iPads. If they're enclosed with plastic instead, they'd be considerably lighter.

When I say "heavy" or "heavier", it does not mean "too heavy". I mean it's heavier in relative to what I'm used to when holding a Switch.

But maybe that'd be a good thing.. being slightly heavier. Makes the unit feel like it has more power, less of a toy weight (Switch).

It is also significantly more powerful than the switch even in passive cooling. I think metal casing is great, it works well in passive cooling. Adding an active cooling would only make it even better.

Just say it’s bad news and go lol
Right? I hate vague posts more than anything. “I don’t wanna break someone’s story” then proceeds to allude in 3 separate posts. It derails the already derailed state we’re in lol. It just feels like a “I’m checking in to tell you I know something” self gratifying thing
idk. Rubs me the wrong way.

And that’s assuming what they say is even real lmao.

Just a thought about that no digital bc in the digital only system.

That could make sense if there is a big price difference between the two skus ala the Xbox Series S and X. If the Switch 2 Physical + BC is $400-$450, Nintendo can have the Switch 2 nothing but digital Switch 2 only games at $200-$250.

I can't imagine they'd really go that route. Feels too "progressive" (?) for Nintendo.

I think he was gonna do a countdown

10 on the first menu, 9 on the second

he posted a song (?) called One in this thread

the tricky part of playing insider is that you need good info

No, it does not make sense.

The two paths are:

Nintendo blocks digital BC from the cheaper model for literally no hardware or software reason.

Nintendo has to shove the Switch 1 chip into one of the models but not the other.

Path two is the most nightmarish thing I can imagine.

Boredom kicking in right now so ignore this post if you don’t want to read fanfiction:

I know that this will probably result in crapshot guesses but…

Assuming Nintendo sticks to the Switch format for future consoles. Approximately what raw performance do you reckon we can expect from a Switch 3 and past that do you reckon that the appeal for a home console such as a PlayStation or Xbox will diminish given that graphical fidelity will see diminishing returns. After all if the game looks and feels the same on my portable Switch as it does on my PlayStation then I’d rather have it on the go?

I’m thinking we might start to see parity with other consoles become a (welcome) trend going forward. That isn’t to say that developers won’t make games that will push the hardware of current/upcoming console generations but that the cutbacks and downsizing between ports will simply be about getting rid of the excesses with little compromise to the experience. I think this will be the case as once every console Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft reaches a certain performance baseline games will begin to look good despite any potential cutbacks. I think an example is that even though Fortnite is trimmed heavily on the Switch it still looks graphically better than most if not all Wii games from a decade prior and probably a lot of the PS3 and Xbox 360 games. (Probably not the best example so feel free to replace Fortnite with your game of choice) So 10 years from now, we can expect the worst looking games from future consoles to look better than the best looking games do today and past that the differences will be so minute that turning down a few settings will still produce amazing fidelity but great performance because you decided to not animated every blade of grass on a future switch as opposed to doing so on a future PlayStation.

I also wonder if we will see a NG Switch Pro this time around because the Switch’s lifecycle was unusual and I don’t believe Nintendo will assume the Switch 2 will have as much longevity. If so maybe we can expect a performance increase that places it solidly above an Xbox Series S and makes it far more comparable to a PS5 or XSX. I do believe that if this does happen then we could maybe see some AAA third party games land on said system. Though maybe they’d make it available only via eshop as Nintendo would want to avoid Timmy’s mum going to the store and buying Timmy the new popular third party game on his regular switch and then it doesn’t work because it’s only meant for the switch Pro. Then maybe we could see a storage increase on a switch pro to accommodate this.

To be honest just throwing around empty thoughts but discussing non-existent potential plans is a fun thought experiment at least for me. :p

Path two would be completely nonsensical. It's all Nvidia's own hardware and software stack, and they couldn't do a simple translation layer for the few depreciated Maxwell instructions without incurring a large performance cost?

Hell no. They probably got that cost down to near nothing.

I can't see a NG Switch pro being a thing if 4N is true. About the only viable node process at that point would be TSMC 3nm, and it doesn't appear to offer all that much in the way of power gains. All they could possibly do is throw in a metal chassis, vapour chamber, and go nuts on the docked clocks.

This thing is going to be maxed out of the gate if they go with what we are presuming they will.

Damn you must be pretty good looking then 😉
I second that now and understand wanting people to receive him for his brains and not just being attractive.

well at least we found out today that NateDrake is hot. big reveal!

I live for the NateDrake on Drake reveal, the internets will malfunction and cease to exist after this cataclysmic event...

I've been called sexy a few times.

Sexy and mysterious is a deadly combination! Lol

I wonder if it would be more viable (edit: or viable at all) for Nintendo to: repurpose the T239 chip (or T239+, if that happens on N3E or N2) and boost the CPU and RAM clocks while adding something akin to an eGPU that boosts performance up to 120FPS in 720p/540p (DLSS'd to 4K and 1080p, respectively) + better RT, where they could possibly use the (possibly) small fraction of defective GPU units, or, just build whole new chip, based on T239, just to accomodate the upgraded base performance?

I'm always skeptical when it comes to rumors revolving around when the Switch 2 is going to be revealed and my big question regarding the initial Switch reveal going private is "Why didn't they do the same with the OLED Reveal Trailer?".

If the initial trailer going down was due to the Switch 2 announcement coming soon, I'd suspect that it'd be done so that YouTube searches along the lines of:
  • new Switch trailer
  • new Nintendo console reveal
  • Switch announcement trailer
would show the new console instead of the current generation Switch. The problem with that though is that beneath those searches, the OLED Model announcement trailer keeps popping up. I don't think the original trailer going down was any accident, but I'd hardly call it indicative of new hardware being imminent within the next week or so, especially when the band in question has been having some licensing issues with their music as of late.

Either way, once Mario Wonder releases, I think that'll be the last MAJOR release Nintendo has for the original Switch (with the exception of Pokémon, because Pokémon is always late to jump to new hardware). No more Zelda, no more Mario, no more Smash Bros., no more Animal Crossing, etc. Because of that, I think we're about to enter a no-man's-land sort of period where Switch 2 info could be randomly dropped or teased any day now, even if I personally don't think it'll be anytime in 2023.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the November thing was just another leak coming out around that time in terms of an article being prepared about the hardware. The actual reveal probably won’t be until March.

Given that the OG Switch had its release month reveled in their April 2016 investors meeting and with the full reveal that October, if there's anything this year, I'd expect it to be alongside their next investors meeting on November 7, with a simple "hey, this thing exists, here's the codename and the release month" with a full reveal trailer in March-April 2024.

That the digital-sku would lack digital-BC.
It seemed like in the video Nick was saying he initially heard there would be a no-BC model and a BC model but that after hearing the recent rumor about the digital only SKU he thinks (and emphasizes this part is him speculating) that what he heard might have meant that the digital only SKU would only have digital BC.

This isn't really related to the current hardware discussion or anything, but I feel it needs to be said: we should try to maintain a healthy balance of skepticism and optimism when it comes to potential leaks and rumors.

Fake info and trolling can be frustrating, sure— but try to remember that at the end of the day, we're just speculating about the next funny bing bing wahoo machine. It's absolutely not worth your stress, anger, or anxiety.
