StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

yeah, and it was awful so they changed it
Right, but using Apple as a reason not to do something when they in fact did that thing until very recently is not a good argument

For the record, I'm also extremely skeptical that whatever size difference will be big enough as to render current Joy Cons and accessories incompatible. As you say, that effectively makes this a new generation regardless of marketing, and we know that the current Switch will be supported until at least the end of next year (MK DLC) and probablyb a fair bit later. Based on jirou's translation, I think 8" is likely an exaggeration

I really don't want a Switch 2 already. This prospect is worse than it not existing to me.
It will not be Switch 2, this doesn not make sense either. Launching Switch 2 when the titles that were announced for a Switch were not even release, Switch is still selling like hot cakes, there is no way.

I'm still of the position that if the screen is bigger, especially by an entire inch, and if the thing is currently in production or even preproduction, then the movement of bigger screens would have 100% leaked via Nikkei or Bloomberg. The fact that it hasn't makes me very much doubt a major change in size.

This seems pretty inescapable to me.

I think it's the shell themselves they are seeing and simply thinking the bigger size means a bigger screen

Soooo I have a translation. lol
Maybe you guys can help me figuring out what some of this actually means, the last sentence in particular is just weird to me, even in my own translation lmao

Remind me when did the Nintendo Switch reveal happen. Was it also in August? I recall it was November...

I just used the iPhone 13 lineup as an example of a good lineup. A less superficially similar but perhaps more meaningful comparison would've been to Jobs's 1997 four square, with entry-level/pro and desktop/portable as the axes

I feel very strongly that if it's any taller or thicker they're screwing us

hell, if it's any wider they're screwing us

My current guess is that the system is slightly longer and wider to allow a bigger battery and more cooling, but the screen size is the same. I just can't imagine them bothering with the OLED update only to use yet another display 12-18 months later

Please tell me more of the taller wider thicker screwing.

I'd assume the Pro is slightly wider, so either an 8" screen in a more widescreen format (which I doubt) or some black bezels to the right and left but same height as the OLED Switch so no bezels on top and bottom. Also no bigger joy cons.

Agreed, I easily can see the big bezels return, and them do a similar upgrade like the Oled to shrink the bezels a few years later with a die shrink and better battery

I'd say only company that seems to even have any bad blood with nintendo anymore this gen is EA after the Wii u stuff.
Eh I would say that both companies ideologies are way too different at this time.
  • EA is kinda of a mess right now but they are extremely focused on mtx, gaas, & big budget games (specifically pushing hardware & realistic graphics)
  • Nintendo is the opposite of this currently
The irony in this is that FIFA Legacy edition is always sent out to die. Yet it does well enough when it releases. Though don’t really count on the other sports titles coming or some of their other bigger projects. They’ll throw a bone every now and then like with Apex. Allegedly the reason for lackluster support was because FUT Switch did bad but the product itself is about as lackluster as the main game. So it’s no wonder FUT Switch failed to gain much traction or build any lasting audience.

Is this for usability reasons, or compatibility reasons? Because like I said, I strongly doubt they'd go ahead with such a model if it were incompatible with current Joy Cons and accessories. If it's for usability reasons, then yeah, it might be a bit bigger and heavier and that will likely suck

one of the murmurs we've consistently heard is that Nintendo has been unsatisfied with parameters like battery life and performance throughout development. I wonder if they hit a wall and had to change the dimensions, because I find it really unlikely that they wanted to do this

The only thing that would really piss me off with the new system is if it didn't have an oled display. Can't go back to normal displays after oled. I'm mostly alright with a larger size.

Yup just seems they are trying to have a reason to tell investors why they don't support switch more, esp with how the fifa games are treated

Japan, even EA knows the importance of Switch SKU for games big in Japan.

there was a CoD on Nintendo consoles and nobody cared
There were several on several Nintendo consoles and people definitely cared.

The best COD effort on a Nintendo console had the misfortune of being on one of the least successful consoles ever made. A properly made COD for Switch will be huge.

Thats what I figured would more than likely happen given what we know from the nvidia leak and the battery being a big reason

That's what the other Funcle, the one the freshly-translated Funcle was corroborating with, "seems" to be saying, when converting the measurements they gave. But, again, it doesn't translate too well, and help is desperately needed, haha! :ROFLMAO:

man, what a disaster this might turn out to be lmao

the switch pro that wasn't meant to be but god damn it they were going to get it out the door somehow

maybe we'll get a switch pro slim down the line

it could also link in with they got a great deal to stick with 8nm Samsung and sacrifices had to be made to keep the battery life thermals etc acceptable. which is very Nintendo-like.

Im sure we will once they do a die shrink that or just a bigger screen and smaller bezels but that seems less likely of the 2

it would be very funny if we got the model in ugly duckling form this year after people swore Nintendo just cancelled or delayed it

turns out that nothing stops this train, even if they have to make their oversized handheld even bigger

Agreed. A lot of people cared. The online multiplayer ones were fairly successful on Wii (was, cod 4, bo, mw3) with over or around million dollars on sales for most, but it went below at the end.

Wii u was like 500k or less, but b02 was fairly popular and active. Ghosts wasn't the best.

I've owned all their 6 online multiplayer games on Wii and Wii u and I was hoping for one to come on switch.. Treyarch Wii team did an amazing job on those games and even posted on gamefaqs.. But they are disbanded now pretty much.

Switch is not a handheld, it's a home console that you can take with you on the go.

personally i could care less about the size if it was as ergonomic as the wii U gamepad but the joycons and overall sqaure design just kills my hands.

Not everything could be such a nice surprise, this is something I can live with it somewhere they had to ‘cut corners’

i don't think we've had hard confirmation of the node the other Orin devices are on yet? i'm wondering how feasible it is economically for Nintendo to have their own branch on a more advanced node at this point in time. and car computers are unlikely to push the GPU component anywhere near as hard, so it would be some sort of compromise to be on the same process.

I do thing about this phrasing often actually

I wonder how far they can really push that though, y'know?
The Switch has been defined as a home console, but I think you could call it a console-handheld hybrid too. Can you tell us why you chose to only call it a home console?

Takahashi: Because I want it to be a home console at heart. It’s a home console that you can play on the go. I believe that it will be primarily plugged into your TV.

It's a joke from them, it's clearly handheld that connects to a TV. The branding is probably used just as "home console" to be there.
I unironically believe that the the kickstand and Joy-Cons make this distinction matter a ton. Being able to use a Wii Remote and Nunchuk style controller on the train or similar really does make it a "portable home console"

...but maybe I put too much stock in their marketing lol

Do you have a source for the bolded? Because if we are going by hearsay then I’m taking it directly from the people who are in charge of these decisions. And, even if it was it’s such a nonfactor. So again you want people to believe that SE put the hotly anticipated KH Collection on Switch because of “licensing costs” on a service that frankly is going to reach an absolute minority of users & costing more in the long run with very little to show for it; instead of porting the games to the Switch & actually making substantially more money then with whatever they did with the cloud versions. Like they could have probably made that 11$mil back within the day.
I believe it was a Kotaku or somewhere similar article by Totilo 13 years ago. Made a quite stir back in the day. I can't simply find a 13 year old article but then again it's a theory not a fact. Even that 11 million number. Square never admitted anything except that the PSP Go owners wouldn't be playing the game.

Still, it does not matter what the specific reason, license costs or storage issues. All technical reasons. Even the producer says it as you linked, technical reasons. "We wanted KH to be on Switch natively but alas, technical mishaps". Meaning if we are to take that as truth, Switch Pro might be the answer they look for. I'm still behind my word, technical limitations are the only thing remains between Nintendo and third parties.
