StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

If we entertain the possibility of bigger screen, certainly would lead to mean updated joy-cons that might no longer have drift.

But also at this point I hope that whatever new joystick component they use can easily be swapped into existing joycons because I don't want to have to drop another $400CAD for a new set of four joy pros

I'm more inclined to believe they'll want to continue reusing the OLED screens they already have a contract for, shove them into a bigger housing and deal with the increased bezels. And wouldn't we have smoke for any new screen orders

I believe it was a Kotaku or somewhere similar article by Totilo 13 years ago. Made a quite stir back in the day. I can't simply find a 13 year old article but then again it's a theory not a fact. Even that 11 million number. Square never admitted anything except that the PSP Go owners wouldn't be playing the game.

Still, it does not matter what the specific reason, license costs or storage issues. All technical reasons. Even the producer says it as you linked, technical reasons. "We wanted KH to be on Switch natively but alas, technical mishaps". Meaning if we are to take that as truth, Switch Pro might be the answer they look for. I'm still behind my word, technical limitations are the only thing remains between Nintendo and third parties.
I mean we’ll just have to agree to disagree. If Switch were so technically deficient then it really shouldn’t be getting the games it is. Technical difficulties is a quick easy excuse for people to throw out for why the Switch is not getting more support. If it were as easy as making a more powerful machine then Nintendo would have done it ages ago to garner 3rd parties back. Instead we’ll be having this talk again when certain 3rd parties, with the Drake, inevitably skip or limit the system because of business or ideological reasons that have really not much to do with technical limitations.

Why would a bigger screen even be that bad? I gave up on the Switch being pocketable a long time ago so an even larger screen could be nice. Is the issue the joycon not working with it? Or have I missed something and people are upset about something else.

How they fucking developed this thing when Covid was at it's peak and employees needed to be home? They were measuring the thing via Skype calls or what? It would explain a lot.

even if transporting it is a pain, the switch is still useable as a handheld, if only barely. but I feel that it's already on the cusp of being too big for comfort and useability.

and, of course, the accessory compatibility

All of this does beg the question - how will the device be visually different? They will not release a device that just looks like an OLED Model. Somethings changing.

We have kickstand speculation, but that’s limited to the rear. Is it just joy con coloring? Perhaps the shell coloring and finishes?

and, of course, the accessory compatibility

This is the primary reason I’d think it’s nonsense.

If the device is a “Switch” it’s not going to suddenly rely on new joy cons to look decent, and an 8” screen would require taller joy cons. I fully expect this thing will be able to fit in the normal dock as well, but have it’s own dock that’s clearly marketed as a requirement to support 4K.

A bigger Switch would differentiate this against the other models: Small, Medium and Large. That way both OLED and Lite still have their unique selling points to the average customer.

I can also see the new one having a rounded back for some more room for the SOC. Chunkier for sure, but considering it's target audience that won't be a problem.

Also for anyone checking the Chinese forums: I greatly enjoy having a look at the Chinese version of Fami!

Personally I don't think it's a bad thing. It would very likely mean new joycons though which would mean no physical compatibility with the existing ~200M ones.

The main issue is that we would very likely have gotten some new information on this product if it used a different screen, so the fact that we haven't either means it's not close to production (possible but if we're entertaining any of these posts seems unlikely) or the screen is the same as that of the OLED model.

I think an aluminum/metal shell would go a long way towards making the unit feel extra “premium” tbh

Otherwise, I think it’s gonna look pretty close to the OLED. Hard to improve on perfection imo

I'm still going with new joycons, I imagine still able to use old joycons, but it will have new ones with new form factor in some way. Only way they really can distinguish it I think other than logo on back

While I'm in favour of aluminum shell, didn't someone mention it could interfere with the range of bluetooth/wifi? Or would it theoretically have a window so that the signals weren't blocked?

How do smartphones/tablets/laptops do it?

There will NOT be an upgraded model announce this year.

They just raised the price to the Splatoon OLED model, and will not announce an even more expensive model prior to the holiday season.

Product likely exists, but won't see the light of day until next spring, the earliest.

You're saying Nintendo would never announce or release a special edition of a console mere months before an upgraded version is announced / released before that holiday season?

I hope you stick around! I think most folk take what you've brought in the spirit you intended, but then conversation can get out of hand. That's not on you, more the natural game of telephone when the thread moves quickly. One of the reasons I'm constantly summarizing the thread is to let us speculate without letting more casual readers get the wrong opinion on thread "consensus"

I'm sure there are very good reasons they can't make the entire shell act as an antenna, or at least a band around the edges... but I want to see Nintendo's R&D team go full mad scientist and try anyway.

Would having the antenna be exposed like that be dangerous for the components? Like, from static shocks or anything? Because making a wraparound kickstand double as an antenna would be the coolest thing ever.

Not a clue 😂 Which honestly goes to show I shouldn't put too much stock in comments that concern troll what the device will end up being made out of haha
Oh I don’t know how it works at all, and tbh you’ve got a point! Maybe they can have a lil bit of plastic (maybe the logo?) to put antennas or something haha

  • Material
  • Coloring
  • Finish
  • Slight shell redesigns
  • Slight JoyCon redesign
  • Removing the bezel
  • Texture
  • Accessories (mic, camera, etc)
  • Custom shells
There are quite a few things they could do to differentiate it or make it stand out from OG Switch.

Yeah, Switch tablet by itself is the same size as a closed New 3DS XL. It's still portable enough for me to carry by hand to an outside chair, or toss in my bag for a train commute. The OLED being a near bezel less design makes it feels like the size is justified, it's almost like you're just holding the screen itself, which is fun for full fat console games.

When I first saw the Gabe Gear I was immediately turned off by the size. I get that folks turn to ergonomics as a justification but (a) Switch ergonomics have been mostly fine for me and (b) there are ways to improve ergo without drastically making the device bigger, like grips or joy cons that mitigate the flat back.

So I'm hoping Drake is just a little bit bigger. It will be more expensive anyway, I'm used to paying a premium for power crammed into a sleeker device, I'd gladly do it here again.

One day someone should Kickstarter a book with all the Famiboards speculation threads. More plot twists than anything I’ve ever read.

man, what a disaster this might turn out to be lmao

the switch pro that wasn't meant to be but god damn it they were going to get it out the door somehow

maybe we'll get a switch pro slim down the line
I don't know why your freaking out so hard (like 10 posts?!) about it being a bit bigger. Personally I think that would be a plus. I'd love if it (and the joycons) were a bit bigger.

Nintendo Switch XL

The only value it would get is a bump in graphics/performance, I guarantee the rest of the value will be the same
Well, better resolution and frame rate would be enormously appreciated, it would suck to miss the opportunity to play the game for the first time with better performance just by mere months. Because no, unfortunately there's no way Imma playing the game any day after July 28.

(It's not the end of the world, though, naturally.)

I'd be happy for you and others but it'd be a complete dealbreaker for me

Longer and wider are the same dimension on Switch. It has height (bottom of screen to top), width and length (from Joy-Con rail to Joy-Con rail) and depth (from screen to backplate).

This just means it's a little wider, a greater distance between the Joy-Con. Comparable to the difference between the V1/2 and the OLED, less than a centimetre. If you had an ultrawide display, that size would fit 8 inch screen in theory, which is where I think the confusion is coming from.

Basically, just like the OLED, only one dimension (length) is changing, and only by the same amount, give or take. The OLED got wider by 0.3cm, I'd say this model will get ~0.3cm wider.

Part of the confusion could be that 3cm ≈ 1 inch, but the actual units used in Switch production are millimeters, which are 0.1cm, or about one thirtieth of an inch.

I hope that makes sense.

HDMI 1.4 to 2.0. I still think there may be bandwidth issues for certain games. As for the Dock having firmware we haven’t really seen Nintendo use it for much of anything so it could or could not.
I think Dakhil mentioned however the tricky part is that it's not the full dataspeed of HDMI 2.0 of 48GB/s, but it's using a DisplayPort 1.4-to-HDMI converter, which caps out at ~32GB/s.

It could still likely run 4K60 even if not a full colour range (I think someone suggested 4:2:2 or 4:4:0), but the other problem to consider is that it's still throttled by the USB-C port used in the dock; any console connected with a wired ethernet cable also has to share the bandwidth with the A/V info sent by HDMI cable

Honest question - have you been a Nintendo user for a long time?
Yes. Wii U got 2 COD games. The switch brand is the best brand console name Nintendo has had in a while. I know excuses are coming at to why I shouldn’t expect this but I disagree.

Not exactly. USB C has dedicated USB 2.0 pins. The ethernet port on its own can't saturate the USB 2.0 lanes of the Switch, it doesn't even use half of it at full blast. This means that all the bandwidth of the USB 3.X interface can be used for video out.

This could be why USB 3.0 Type A was axed from the Nintendo Switch Dock with LAN Port. Not that it was ever used on the original, officially anyway, but its absence is conspicuous.

there was a CoD on Nintendo consoles and nobody cared
The 1 on the Wii sold over a million. The 2 on Wii U didn’t sell well but that’s not surprising. Those games did have very good communities of people passionate about COD and Nintendo.
