So they did drop an overview trailer after all. Still not convinced Nintendo would go for a General Direct in January, though. They very well might, now that there likely won't be a Pokémon Presents this month, but I doubt it.

Nintendo will start the Direct at 11:59:59 pm on January 31st, so that even when we have a direct to talk about, we'll still be debating which team won :p

Yeah, if there's a six minute overview trailer, the odds of a Pokemon presentation just dropped substantially. Personally I'm still not convinced on the need for a general Direct this month, as in a full-length one, but maybe keep an eye out for a Mini next week? Or just a release date announcement for Kirby outside of any presentation.

things are afoot

I think there will be no more Nintendo Directs. It's time to change up the format to something that appeals to the Tik-Tok generation. Perhaps a Nintendo Blockchain where the currency is news and miners dedicate unreasonable amounts of computing power to uncover it. Entire forums and speculation threads with thousands of posts dedicated to perpetuating the hype cycle could be shut down and their infrastructure repurposed for number crunching. The amount of wasted energy would remain approximately the same, except now it would mostly take the form of electricity instead of emotional fatigue and free time.

I had a dream that Team January won and a full Direct was next Thursday. I was shocked. I also got kicked off a veritable scrabble bag of a casual hockey team for losing.

so clearly ICE HOCKEY 2022 is Nintendo’s next direct curveball

I would play the hell out of an Ice Hockey revival. I have way too many fond memories of playing that with my sister in the basement at my grandparents when we were kids.

I keep thinking Arceus is a mid-January release and not end of the month. A direct two weeks after in early-to-mid February makes way too much sense

I can't believe we're entering Direct speculation season for the first time on Fami. This is going to be so much fun as plausible dates grow nearer!

I would probably actually play another Let's Go

insane that (imo) Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee are the only Pokémons on Switch that look good
I thought it was neat but god did I miss the classic Pokémon catching mechanics. In that way both Sword & Pearl were a lot more enjoyable for me.

I really would be down for more games like BDSP, especially with improved art, but for the most part I thought they actually looked pretty good! They could have used a dash more of Let’s Go’s sense of light and color though.

but I also love Sword so it may be time for me to accept that I’m a freak

I think that pokémon sword and shield are the ugliest games I've ever seen

this is the magic of subjective preference
I might not be as active anymore but my Pokémon sense is still intactly tingling when someone is shittalking about Pokémon behind my back.
I see you my friend.

fuck I thought I could finally get away with it

it's no coincidence that pokémon is the largest media franchise in the world, everyone. pokémon is good.

Anyone has any idea to who belongs that voice that is voicing Switch Headlines in the Direct? Just curious, don't have answer for years.

Susmira Waveheim
Susley Wavebert
Susriel Wavencrantz
Susji Waveford
Susmantha Waverly
Susibal Waveed

who’s to say?

I kow it’s coming in three months and we already got a GamesCom 2020 reveal (witch for me was like christmas in advance) but I would love seeing some Turrican Anthology in the upcoming Direct.

You have no idea of how happy I was to just see « Turrican » in a big event, after 26 (twenty-five, vingt-cinq, 20+7-2) YEARS without any official Turrican release or even news and between four and five games cancelled !

That’s a very good day to do it too. I’m torn now.
I feel like it makes the most sense. If this direct doesn't announce any major new titles and mostly focuses on release dates for titles we already know about, then it's possible they show a trailer. If it's a direct that gives us the typical big 2 reveals, then I doubt it.

Teaser but yes

First trailer at E3 (or in June Direct)
Yeah my original thinking was the casting made such a big splash from the last Direct and they could show it on their own terms with their most passionate audience. The casting amplified some of their announcements that day.

The Mario Day suggestion above is interesting. Depending on when the Direct hits, maybe a teaser at the Direct and the full trailer on Mario day?

I don't if I said it or not, so left me be very clear: I'm #TeamFebruary.

I'll even plant my flag in the sand and say it'll be February 9th.

In that bizarre mental space where I'm impatient for a Direct not only so that I can look forward to whatever games are announced, but also so that I can start speculating about what hasn't been announced.

Nintendo Direct Speculation is a sickness, a sickness I tell you!

I don't know if I can survive 2022 without a new Fire Emblem and Xenoblade game. Should I prepare my funeral just in case?
Xenoblade feels like it might be happening but idk about Fire Emblem. I'd put a down payment on a casket just in case.

It really feels like it’s been a long time since the last direct. Can’t really say why but probably because there are so many rumored stuff and games I want to see more of.

It‘s because we are right now in the time frame were we usually have to wait the longest for a new direct/Nintendo News. Otherwise we usually have from February/March to September Nintendo News almost every week.

The Fire Emblem team hasn't done anything for a long while, don't know if Heroes even counts. Paper Mario and WarioWare had other people working on them, and Three Houses was mostly done by Koei Tecmo.

it's really just this weekend that'll be excruciating

starting on Monday we have some hope of hearing about Kirby, and from there the hype season will be in full swing

unfortunately rumors seem to be pretty rare these days so we might not get much excitement prior to a direct, but y'know

I just got done tallying all of the Direct teams, and to do so I read through every single post in this thread so far. so get ready for the biggest multiquote in the history of Famiboards

Also, great thread/video, but your mic is a bit too low.
Yeahhh I always have trouble recording with QuickTime on Mac. Had I continued to do multimedia I hopefully would've ironed this out

I forgot to say, great OP @Raccoon! I enjoyed reading it :)
heheh thanks

Oh yeah!! I really missed this thread, the General Discussion threads were nice but usually too focused on community, which is fine but the Direct rumours and speculation were in the background. Luckily this year will give us many amazing new announcements :D
The split has gone even better than I expected it to, and I think without all of my bullshit this thread fills a fantastic niche for the coming weeks

Bit of a silver lining here (I try to reframe things to be more positive, for better or worse), there will now be only a select few of us who got to see the Direct Speculation Daily video where we watched Raccoon talk to us as he walked us through polishing an ST and forgot the names of PlayStation games, and in the far-flung Famifuture when those privileged few of us bring it up in hushed whispers around the campfire the n00bs will be like, "huh??"
this really is gonna be a weird Famiboards artifact huh

it's a very awkward video lol

Might somebody have already, or be willing to make, a predictions image template, so that users in these threads can easily share their predictions in a fun bingo sheet format?
I'm late as fuck but I'm on it

Three out of twelve months had multiple releases, and it would have been four had Advance Wars not been delayed out of December. We gotta think bigger.
yeah, keeping expectations reserved is generally a good thing but people seem to fixate on having one game for every month exactly when precedent doesn't support and even sometimes when it doesn't make any sense (e.g. "well Triangle Strategy is in March, Advance Wars is April, so Kirby must be May")

This would easily be Nintendo's strongest 7 months in history in terms of 1st Party core-oriented releases.
yeahh, 2022 has the potential to be almost too good. it may not feel like it, but enthusiasts' time is a limited resource and they could end up self-competing. hopefully there's not too much overlap between those audiences

Fire Emblem in 2022 seems unlikely to me. A 3 year turnaround after Three Houses, in the midst of COVID, doesn't sound realistic.
this made me wonder

what if the next fire emblem is about a magical black death

would that be in poor taste?

BotW2 shadowdrop next Friday. Happy new year world.
can't believe this didn't happen crying shidding and farding rn

If the next direct is in February and something gets shadowdropped, I wouldn't be surprised if it's the next 99/Battle Royale game. It seems that the core leads for Tetris 99 and Super Mario Bros. 35 were the same, whereas Pac-Man 99 was developed by a mostly different team within Arika and had no involvement from EPD. There's also some evidence to suggest that the Mario 35th Anniversary celebrations were meant to begin much earlier, so who knows how long they were sitting on Mario 35. The Pac-Man 99 credits have an "Arika 99 Team" section, so the series will probably continue in some form.

Going into random speculation, the most popular candidates seem to be Puzzle League/Panel de Pon 99 and WarioWare 99. If I had to choose between them, I think Puzzle League is more likely, as WarioWare just had a recent release with Get it Together. I definitely wouldn't rule out WarioWare 99 in the future, as Ryuichi Nakada has worked on Touched and Smooth Moves.
always appreciate your insight

january: kirby and the forgotten land release date via twitter (march)
man you were ahead of the curve on this

Something which has been barely mentioned is the possibility of EPD 10 focusing on Pikmin 4 instead of a new 2D Mario after SMM2.

Wouldn't discard a release this year either.
absolutely not happening, zero chance

Daily reminder to check expectations. Nintendo has a relatively huge 8 games already announced for 2022, prior to any direct. There are other titles that are heavily rumored and I don't think we should expect much, if anything, beyond those (e.g. DK, Xeno, Fire Emblem, MP Remake) to be announced.
yeahhhhh rumors are obviously very important to speculation but man, they've made everyone's hopes and expectations the same. not too much room for anything creative or "exciting," though obviously many are excited for the rumored games

Lengthy PLA overview trailer later today, I can feel it.
wait did this actually happen? or was it a day later?

Prepare thine selves for another year of doom and gloom as Nintendo doesn't mention any summer presentations with E3 once again going digital
this aged well, even if doesn't end up being entirely accurate

An Overview Trailer of Pokémon Legends Arceus has been posted.
It seems highly unlikely that there will be a Pokémon Direct.

okay so it was a day later, cool

I had a dream that Team January won and a full Direct was next Thursday. I was shocked. I also got kicked off a veritable scrabble bag of a casual hockey team for losing.

oh gosh if this was a remake of NES Ice Hockey it would genuinely be my GOTY

I don't if I said it or not, so left me be very clear: I'm #TeamFebruary.

I'll even plant my flag in the sand and say it'll be February 9th.
it turns out you did not! looks like me reading every single page right to the end paid off

#TeamJanuary
Here they are folks, the first of our three Nintendo Direct teams. Keep in mind that these teams are for the first general Nintendo Direct of the year, either a full Nintendo Direct or a Nintendo Direct Mini. Any new similar formats that are general (i.e. not focused on a specific game, genre, theme, etc) will apply as well.

If you would like to change your team, please just let me know with an @! If I've made a mistake, which is pretty likely, please let me know the same way. Also, usernames in bold have changed their forum title to "#TeamJanuary" and will receive double the normal prize if they win the raffle. If you would like to change your title, go to your "Account details" and enter your "Custom title." This has to be "#TeamJanuary" exactly to qualify.

Proud mavericks with a sense of historic righteousness, Team January are bold and optimistic. Their unity comes just as much from their years of loyalty to the cause as to the belief itself. While noble and stalwart, they are known to sometimes be pigheaded and stubborn.

Rational, reasonable, and directed by logic alone, Team February may not carry the sense of stubborn pride that other teams do, but they are nonetheless united by their beliefs. With numbers consistently on their side and often bearing some of the community's most prolific debaters who can control the thread's narrative for weeks at a time, they may come off to some as smug, overbearing, and dull.

A tight band of chaos enjoyers and skeptics, Team March is uniquely comprised of both the forum's most creative shitposters and most pessimistic analysts. Small enough to know each other by name, this dark horse team is bound by their bravery and brashness. They are generally removed from the rivalry of the other two teams.
