I'm going to go #teamJanuary for this.

There are so many games coming out this year that my wallet is going to be absolutely crushed.

I think we'll see a new 3D Mario announced this year but it won't release until early 2023, though in the event of a BotW2 delay I think the two games could be swapped. Not that I think a delay will happen though. If Zelda's coming this year then we'll see it at the next direct and, if not, then imo it's delayed. We'll see lol

Release predictions for fun:
January: Pokemon Legends Arceus
February:
March: Kirby and the Forgotten Land
April:
May: Splatoon 3
June: Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope
July:
August: Metroid Prime HD
September: Bayonetta 3
October: Pokemon Legends DLC
November: Breath of the Wild 2
December: Xenoblade Chronicles 3

Fully expecting a Pokémon presents within the next ~9 days. Think they will have the general Direct in February and reveal the BotW2 subtitle there, but save the blow-out for E3.

Of course, the way it usually goes with my gut feeling regarding Directs is that neither will happen.

Project Triangle effectively takes the late Feb spot, and Advance Wars releases April. Add in an FE Remake and 3D DK and you have potentially the best year in recent memory, even if BOTW2 slips (please no).

There should be a Pokemon Presents this week because previews for Arecus should be next week.

Yeah this is kinda why I'm still convinced the new model is coming this year. It feels like the right time for a big new mainline Mario or Mario Kart game considering the movie in December and I can't imagine that and BotW2 happening this year and any new hardware coming less than 3-4 years later.

So unless the big Mario game(s) is/are next year which is totally possible, new hardware feels like 2022 or else 2025-2026.
I think there will be a cross-gen period between Switch and Switch 2 that will last for several years where Switch 1 gets all the less demanding games while Switch 2 gets those games (at a higher framerate and resolution) and more demanding games exclusive to it. It could very well be that Nintendo can release a new 3D Mario for Switch 1 in 2022 and introduce Switch 2 in 2023 (with exclusive Mario Kart). Then, when Nintendo decides to discontinue Switch 1 (thereby making Switch 2 mandatory for new Nintendo releases), a new Mario could be ready to persuade new potential buyers.

Give me Metroid and Zelda this year and I’ll be happy. I don’t expect to play my Switch too much this year, at least until the Fall.

Yeah I'm a big proponent of the "soft launch" idea too, that could work. The only reason I'd be a bit wary is that it's seemingly taking 4-5+ years for the next 3D Mario game to come out (6 if it's not till 2023) so that doesn't exactly inspire confidence that they can get a new one after that out within like 3 years.

January: Pokemon Legends Arceus
February:
March: Advance Wars
April: Kirby and the Forgotten Land
May: Metroid Prime Remake, Pikmin Spin Off
June: new Mario (3D / 2D)
July: Splatoon 3, new Mario spin off
August: Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, WWHD or TPHD
September: Bayonetta 3
October: Ring Fit 2, Donkey Kong
November: Breath of the Wild 2, Let's Go Johto
December: Xenoblade 3

#TeamFebruary

However, Kirby will receive the Yoshi treatment and gets it date announced in a random twitter post in the coming weeks.

The January Direct cycle
Week 1: Yeah, new year #TeamJanuary
Week 2: January Direct will be announced any day now
Week 3: Come on where's the January direct my fanxiety is killing me
Week 4: Hopelessness, despair, #TeamFebruary

Seeing what we know...

January: Pokemon Legends Arceus
February; smaller game announced at the Direct
March: Triangle Strategy and Kirby The Forgotten Land
April: Stinky Horsegame
May: Advance Wars 1 + 2 Reboot Camp
June: Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope
July: Splatoon 3
August: Metroid Prime Remaster (or Bayonetta 3)
September: Xenoblade 3
October: Baytonetta 3 (Or Metroid Pime Remaster) + Fire Emblem 4 Remake
November: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild sequel

#TeamFeburary

Although I think there will be something Pokémon this month, either a Presents or a Pokémon Legends Direct. The game is only 25 days away and I don't feel like I really know that much about it at all. In some ways that is awesome, as I feel games tend to reveal too much before release to entice people, but I would like to know just a little bit more about how the game works.

If everything already announced makes it this year and some of the likelier predictions materialize (mostly thinking Xenoblade), we are looking at a 2017 tier banger, maybe even better. It seems like for a lot of people, unless we also get a 3D Mario it won't live up to 2017 in their mind, but I think that is placing way too much importance on one game. There is already more than enough to make up for it what with Pokémon, Kirby, Sunbreak and Bayonetta. I don't expect a 3D Mario game this year anyway because Zelda is probably the holiday game and if the next big 3D Mario was gonna come before that, I feel that it would've already been announced.

My take on this year's schedule

January: Pokemon Legends Arceus
February: NSO Game Boy
March: Triangle Strategy
April: Kirby and the Forgotten World + that stinker game
May: Advance Wars 1 + 2 Reboot Camp + Tomodachi 3
June: Fire Emblem 4: Genealogy of the Holy War remake
July: Splatoon 3
August: Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope
September: Metroid Prime Remaster
October: Baytonetta 3 + Pokemon Legends DLC
November: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild sequel
December: Xenoblade 3

I reckon Nintendo will be publishing Monster Hunter: Sunbreak here in Europe and thus probably counting that as a big summer release with a ton of promotion behind it.

What did I miss wrt “stinky horse game”

Seen it come up
A few months back Emily told us about a casual game coming soon (H1) which Nintendo is not terribly excited about, so she called it a stinker. It's apparently a sequel to another game that got middling reviews, has some manner of horse person in it, and has the word "everybody" in the likely final title.

Where's the Nintendo direct announcement, it's already January 3rd... 👀

/s

I think we'll get a Pokemon direct as a last Arceus hype push, what is the general opinion?

Sequel to my favorite game, Everybody's a Horse. Can't wait!

Nintendo are definitely promoting Sunbreak for 2022 - it was one of the titles they featured in their News Channel promo for 2022. However, given they didn't publish the base game for Rise in 2021, I see no reason why they'd now publish the expansion.

I'm really excited to hear the official title for Botw2. Hope that's announced in the first Direct of 2022.

Zelda titles are always cool and trigger my imagination.

This year is looking like an awesome year just from stuff we already know to be releasing. Inject more Metroid and Zelda into my veins Nintendo. #TeamJanuary

Wouldn't September or October be more likely for NSO Game Boy since they usually update with new systems around that time

List of potential announcements is growing everyday:

Alan Wake Remastered
Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series
Chrono Cross Remaster
Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster
Tactics Ogre remaster
Assassin's Creed Ezio Collection
Remnant From the Ashes
Zombie Army 4 Dead War

And other possible stuff like Mass Effect, Borderlands, Nier and Tomb Raider trilogy... It's gonna be a feast...

Something which has been barely mentioned is the possibility of EPD 10 focusing on Pikmin 4 instead of a new 2D Mario after SMM2.

Wouldn't discard a release this year either.

Some form of this has been said every year for the past like five years. But I admire the perseverance

You forgot FF9 Remake.

Just a very uneventful update.

My plan is to come back on the 7th (Friday), go through all the posts, and post the rosters in the OP. If anyone wants to make a change or got missed, they can let me know over the week following and I'll check back in again.

Glad to see that there was demand for a speculation-focused thread like this. Have fun

GB NSO in Q1 is kind of weird when you look at when Nintendo has added systems in the past, but I do think there are a few things going for it:
  • Was supposedly scheduled for last year at some point
  • There's probably a not insignificant number of NSO subscriptions coming due in Spring due to AC
  • Well aligned with the typical big Pokémon news drops in February
  • Also well aligned with the fact we're due for a big Pokémon Home update soon.

Yeah I think GB NSO isn’t as big of a deal anyway, they may just throw it out in the beginning of the year

I finally stop checking this thread regularly only to be greeted by this

(Actually has me intrigued I wonder what this is)

Screw it, @Raccoon

We get a Kirby 30th anniversary Direct this month or next and the General Direct is late March

#TeamMarch
This is a pretty incredible idea, honestly. Personally I'm expecting some sort of boost to NSO, but that could maybe end up being announced in a Tweet.

Creative ideas like this are the lifeblood of this thread, so I appreciate you sharing. I'll mark you down as #TeamMarch when I get to the rest of them
