I'm new to this forum, so forgive me if this has already been answered, but...
What kind of power levels are we expecting out of the next Switch? PS4 levels? A midpoint between PS4 and 5?
Graphical fidelity isn't that big of a deal to me. I'm just concerned about the 3rd party support this next Switch will receive, or not receive. Will it be strong to receive ports from PS5, or no?
I'm also kinda new to this forum so take my answer with a truckload of salt, but from my understanding :
REMEMBER : We have limited data, and a lot of stuff is unknown. Everything I will say is estimations, not confirmations.
1) Switch 2 has a GPU that, in handheld, has a power around that of a PS4. It also has DLSS, helping reconstruct to higher resolutions, and making it powerful enough to handle new games by lowering the settings and resolution, and using DLSS to reconstruct with decent image quality. From what I read on this forum, in docked we estimate that Switch 2 can do with DLSS what Series S can do with native res. GPU performance is not usually the limiting factor for ports though.
2) Switch 2 has RT cores. I personnally don't know how powerful and there probably is some data on that which I can't be bothered to search, but although it's gonna be weaker than "next-gen" consoles it's an Nvidia chip as opposed to AMD in other consoles, and Nvidia is quite better at RT. So it's gonna be less powerful, but if I had to guess it's gonna be reasonably close to Series S in docked. So games that require RT could run, although with much reduced settings.
3) Switch 2 has also a relatively powerful CPU, which is more important regarding ports : because lowering the GPU load of a game is easy, lowering the CPU load not that much. So it should help with the porting process. CPU is once again not as powerful as "next-gen" consoles, but it's close enough for ports to happen.
4) Switch 2 should have 12GB of RAM, which is actually more than Series S. RAM is also very important for porting, especially if you want to keep RT as RT is very VRAM heavy. The lack of RAM in Series S is actually very limiting for developpers who want to implement RT, and it won't be as much of a problem with Switch 2.
Overall, Switch 2 is close to "next-gen" consoles in RAM and CPU, the most important for ports. OG Switch was quite good in the CPU department for its time, but not as good as Switch 2 and the RAM was really lacking on OG Switch.
Switch 2 gets further behing with the GPU, but it's not that much of a problem for ports as it has DLSS to help compensate, and lowering the GPU load is easy by just turning down settings.
And to conclude, just remember the truckload of salt I recommended you bring. I am not an expert in this topic AT ALL.
