StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

  • A new speculation thread has been created for all broad topics involving the Switch 2. Please join the conversation here.
  • Going forward, the hardware thread will be strictly about the technical side of the Switch 2. This includes any rumors or speculation about hardware's specs.
Mods need to start enforcing the staff post. This thread is majority memes and shitposts at this point. I would like to actually see the latest hardware speculation without scrolling through 30 page of nonsense.

If the announcement is due by then, I will change my pfp into this

Problem is, there isn't that much left to speculate about.

This thread either needs another LiC/LuigiBlood detective report, or some new rumors/leaks from gaming outlets or Nate.

Featuring a known sexual abuser (RelaxAlax) in one of his videos after blatantly ignoring the warnings of the victim (& unfollowing said victim, Bobdunga). Scott only removed the cameo after facing pressure from the community to do so, & gave Bobdunga a half-assed apology according to her.

So yeah, fuck Scott the Woz. Protect Black women.
Holy shit, I had no idea.

Hello, long time lurker here, finally decided to jump in on this conversation after seeing lots of exciting findings over the last few days.

I have a few thoughts to share on the Switch 2 announcement/launch timing.

With that out of the way, I'm of the agreement that mass production is starting soon based on the findings here. But I think it's very unlikely that NCL is going to announce or acknowledge the new system during the IR release next week or before the end of the year, so it's best to temper your expectations.

From a business perspective, acknowledging that the next system is coming during the next IR release doesn't make any sense. Q4 is the most profitable quarter for Nintendo and an acknowledgement of the next system will be bad for Switch. An acknowledgement will still make news on mainstream media. The only time Nintendo mentioned or announced a next system in Q4 were the Switch and DS, but those two are exceptions and not the norm. For the former, Wii U was dying so it made no difference, and for the latter, DS was internally seen as a "new concept" neither succeeding the GameCube or GBA. The next system is a direct successor to the Switch, and the Switch is still relatively strong for a console in its seventh year.

outside of Japan which is unusually strong because of the weak yen and key markets like the US, Switch hardware sales have been rather bad this year. It's natural, given that the Switch is about to hit its saturation point. I think NCL is seeing the same kind of numbers and downturn trend and thus the reason why you're seeing all the different models and bundles (four) being rushed out in Q4. This is their way of propping up the numbers for Q4 (they need to sell at least 7M in Q4 to have any chance of hitting it) to hit their 15M goal and announcing the next system will interfere with that.

If I were in Nintendo's shoes I would announce the new system in Q1 2024 in order not to jeopardize the holiday sales. Q1 is always weak for Nintendo, sacrificing that quarter will make a smooth transition to the next system. Historically for Q1 Nintendo has announced their next system in March, I think it's still possible for them to announce in January/February but it will depend on what their plans are on the launch timing. All of it will depend on whether they have all the software ready for the next system.

My expectation is they will announce in Q1 2024 and release in Q2/Q3 2024, and it will be 3 - 4 months from announcement to launch.

Just a reminder to everyone that the people who LEGIT expected something today was very, very few. It’s just that we have general vibes that something could happen around the investor call. So what’s happening right now in the thread is more just general excitements and hopes than specific expectations for something to happen on a particular day.

Speaking as someone who... let's be honest kind of headed the charge (sorry about that), my expectations were "It'd be really cool if it happened today, but the odds of it actually happening are low". The hype after the shipping leak combined with the investor call kinda made things explode a bit too far.

I don't think there's anything wrong with being hyped for the system because, let's be honest, all of us are. Just remember that reality is a place you live in, and that there isn't a guarantee that this stuff will happen when a few people with thumbtacks and string make a few connections.

buyer uncle will know about the switch 2 the same day i know about the switch 2. which, even though we're in similar positions, will be fairly close to the same day everyone knows about switch 2.

i realize this is three pages ago now but also three pages ago was less than 5 hours ago so...!

edit: saying this because buyers usually don't have the purview to know about things that far ahead. unless, like some were stating, he saw something (like updated packaging on switch games) that he can currently buy to make him question BC.

I don't want to post more about it when it would be lost in a sea of "posting just to post" posts, and/or argued by some as definitive proof of an imminent announcement.

I don't think you can compare the Switch Lite to this next Nintendo console. It's carrying an order of magnitude more weight to it, as this will be the introduction of a whole new generation. I'm of the opinion they will 100% want to be the ones to introduce it and prevent the first look of it to come from factory floors. But we'll see!

Or... The literal announcement, which deadline is literally days away.

Yeah, I feel ya, I'm off to bed and fully expect to wake up to 10+ pages of nonsense now, which is unfair to you, folks like you and to swaths of people whose only interest in this thread is something substantive, not "community chat shitposting" runoff.

Sorry, it wasn't my intention to make you (or others) feel like they need to post anything.
That's not what I meant either, sorry if I was unclear. I'm saying that "we need some more info so we can stop posting in circles" only works if the investigation/research becomes a topic of thoughtful discussion and isn't itself followed by 10 more pages of posting in circles. Given the last several pages, and the fact that the majority of the discussion about shipments had devolved into an argument about whether they imply an imminent announcement, I don't see that happening.

Bingo. I'm guilty of shitposting here and there so this absolutely will may sound hypocritical, but imo there wouldn't be anything wrong with just kinda letting the thread sit for a bit until the next part in LiC's Bizarre Adventure. Info'll come any day now, officially or otherwise.

Tbh I'm fine with the shitposting as long as it gets reeled in when proper discussion kicks back up again. It's a nice change of pace from talking in circles about marketing or backwards compatibility or whatever. For now anyway.

This is my take as well. I know the argument saying that a person buying the Switch year 7 is not the same as the early adopter, but I can also see some people deciding to offer something else as a gift and waiting for the release of the Switch 2. Or people who were going to replace an old model for an OLED decide that they better wait a couple more months (those can also be potential gifts, so it works in both kind of clients).

Indeed, the real benefit for a November announcement would be to control the narrative and act before possible leaks, and that's for Nintendo to decide. Whatever happens, there are good enough reasons in both sides. Do they want to make sure they sell every unit they possibly could, or do they want to control the narrative 100%?

I had never thought about it in that angle: we already suspect many things about it, confirming it will be like the Switch is not that big of a deal. We also know quite a bit about how the machine is going to perform. The very important thing is actually the release date and the games. Especially the games. And that's two of the things they can keep a secret more easily.

I personally think the Switch 2 will be released between may-july. March would be amazing, but it feels too soon.

Thank you for your insight. Business wise, yes, Q1 reveal/announcement makes sense. If we take into consideration the March rumbling we have from Gamescom, it’s possible that March will have a keynote sort of event

Wouldn’t 3-4 months be a bit too close for comfort regarding marketing?

March is still Q1, that could be the reveal.

Yeah, seconded. And if there is no new hardware speculation, then surely that's just fine? There is no law of nature that says that this specific thread needs to be active around the clock.

Some of like to use it as a sort of RSS feed about actual new findings and informed speculation based immediately on that; as such, there probably isn't a better place on the internet for it. I also get that the constant hype is just pure fun for some others, but frankly, I find it tiring if it goes on for more than a day or so, and it's not like a filtered version exists aside from ignoring just about everyone.

Maybe a solution would be to rename the Switch 2 Speculation Thread into the Switch 2 Waiting Room, seeing as there isn't really that much software speculation going on there at the moment? Or creating a separate, third thread with no restrictions whatsoever, which is what this thread currently looks like.

Again, not trying to police anyone's fun; just saying that unreserved hype doesn't mesh too well with deeper discussion and slightly less impassioned excitement, as was also said when the thread was split.

Back on the actual topic of hardware speculation: The current expectation is that the next Switch will come with LCD screens in order to save costs, and so we're most likely to see an OLED model later down the line. Do you all expect for the Switch 2 hardware line to basically be a repeat of the original Switch in which we have multiple form factors but functionality identical performance characteristics:
  1. Base model
  2. Lite model
  3. OLED model
I'm not sure if Nintendo plans to do an actual mid-generation update, and I can't think of a particularly strong incentive to do so given how successful the original Switch hardware lineup worked out.

I could be wrong, but i think the sales of the Lite always lagged behind compared to regular Switch and even moreso OLED.
They may not feel bothered enough for a portable only version this time.

Though if ReDraketed is indeed bigger in dimensions and weight than the current Switch models and they manage to shrink it down to near "Lite"-size, there might be more consumer interest this time?

That's right. The games are what matter the most, because a lackluster lineup will break the system. What killed the Wii U's momentum was the lack of games in its early years.

I don't know where Nintendo is currently at with their projects for the next system, but this time round they are going to have a harder time filling the release schedule for it if they want to push out 1 game a month. They can't rely on Wii U ports like they used to with the Switch. So the launch month will be highly dependent on the state of their first year slate.

Yeah I actually do expect a similar sequence of form factors here, except I think a mid-generation update is possible in place of an OLED model (which may or may not have OLED). If the size of the system is around what has been speculated here, then I wouldn't be surprised if the Lite model comes out sooner rather than later in the system's life (even by 2025, like how the 3DS XL launched after a year or so from the original 3DS).

Huh?

Uh, no. It's one day. There's like... Four months left where they could announce it 3 months before launch, and still be in H1.

There's almost two months left where they could announce it for a launch in Q1, with a 3 month lead up.

Also you don't control us. 🙂

A Lite that keeps Docking functionality would be the dream

If they give me an option that has the Lite's form factor, but still lets me dock and play in 4K, and maybe also throws in an OLED screen on the handheld? A more perfect system could not exist.

Doesn't even need to be working with a theoretical Switch 2 dock. It just needs to be able to be connected to a TV directly. That would be enough imo.

A dockable Lite defeats the purpose of the Lite. It’s supposed to be a limited console in order for it to be cheaper, push more Switched-per-household and get consumers into the Switch ecosystem
