This is leading to some internet speculation about why would Nintendo go to Qualcomm, conclusions being drawn about what that means for the nVidia relationship, and is the T239 canceled

“Those are companies [PlayStation and Nintendo] that are interested in having handheld gaming capabilities. So obviously they would reach out and talk to us,” Alex Katouzian (Qualcomm’s Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Mobile, Compute and XR) said. “I think they, in general, will reach out to someone like Qualcomm because they know how big we are in Android gaming.”

Yeah... I don't see Nintendo ditching Nvidia because they're impressed with how big another company is in Android gaming. They couldn't be less interested in that.

I feel like Qualcomm would have to offer their stuff to Nintendo for free to even remotely have a chance to look more attractive than all the extra services nVidia offers to Nintendo.

The Nintendo/nVidia partnership is more than just buying SoCs. And that's where Qualcomm won't be able to compete for a looooong time.

But hey, for whatever funky devices Sony wants to do, looking at the Q Lite, i'd say Qualcomm is good enough for that.

I don't see any similarities with SNES logo, I am even pretty sure that next hardware will still use the same Switch font as now. This is really tinfoil theory am sorry.

Lol @ 1-2 Switch, very random announcement that I didn't see coming... But on that note...

Metroid Prime 4 is so totally gonna be cross gen and I'm so buying it day one on REDACTED.

I am trying to think of a gimmick or feature for REDACTED but I'm not as creative as Nintendo and the Switch is jam packed with so many gimmicky features.
I love the modular design but I want joycons to be improved if they're returning again and maybe a dock with a few more bells and whistles?

I just have a hard time thinking it will be just a Switch but much more powerful. That tends to not repeat success for Nintendo even though the Switch just seems like it's 100% a winning formula.

Switch 2's dock will include a weighted crank /s

If you look from a hardware-perspective Qualcomm can't offer anything over Nvidias chips. Nintendo doesn't need a 5G-modem-chip, Nintendo doesn't need an image processor to enhance to quality of their camera. Nintendo needs good gaming-power in a very efficient SoC to meet the thermal envelop of mobile hardware.

From a software-perspective Nvidia can offer so much more to Nintendo and already did in the past. Nvidia just knows what game-developers want now and in the years to come, the NVN-API for the Switch was a very nice addition to the Switch-SDK and the NVN2-API will take the same role. DLSS, Raytracing and AI-acceleration are also features which work best on Nvidia-hardware not just because the hardware is faster but also bceause they have very vibrant software-ecosystems around these things and create industry-wide standards for them.

I would argue that Qualcomm can also not compete in the field of pricing. Apple and Qualcomm had a famous public dispute for years about pricing and met a lot of times in court. Qualcomm also tends to use cheaper nodes (like Samsung 8nm) but these make their chips also less efficient. For Apple they always use TSMC for better efficiency and these chips tend to be very expensive, which is the reason why Apple is expanding their R & D for creating their own modem-chips to get rid of Qualcomm.

Remember the rumor about the new system streaming multiscreen multiplayer games to nearby phones?
Was that the one that also included a VR headset?

It was a patent. I was kinda hopeful that it was a concept for the next device, which allowed the 120 million Switches that are out in the wild to connect with it for asymmetrical play.

Metroid Prime 4 is so totally gonna be cross gen and I'm so buying it day one on REDACTED.

Imagine if it was VR, and this was a flagship title along with MK9 💥

Is there any interesting tech out there that hasn't been used much for games yet? Sorta like how the DS touchscreen was inspired by PDAs. The only ones I can think of are completely ridiculous, like 3D printers ☹️
I remember that video posted by ubisoft a while back.

For all the tech-savy folks in this chat (great reading your thoughts over the past few weeks btw, although I understand very little), is anything like that achievable with today's technology ?

Nintendo could go for a more 3D-like-Audio, doesn't cost that much.

There's always Scrollwheel-Shoulderbuttons!

That's something neither Xbox nor PS have or have done yet!
And that's why I keep saying!

Capacitive. Pressure sensitive. Shoulder buttons.

Analogue trigger? Bam. Scrolling shoulder buttons? Bam. All in one. Without making the ZL and ZR buttons an analogue slog for Splatoon 3.

They already tried this with the New 3DS, atleast headtracking, to improve the viewing-angles of the 3D-parallax-barrier of the display. What would the improvements to gaming of eye-tracking without VR-Glasses/a autostereoscopic 3D-Display? I don't think Switch Two will include one of these.
Not only that but it also used face tracking for poke-amie interactions.

achievable, but it takes a lot of hardware that makes it infeasible to the consumer

Aaaaaand we get Everybody 1 2 Switch coming June 30th. Another rumored title that turned out to be releasing (sorta) H1 2023. H2 still looking suspiciously empty. 👀

If there's one thing to take from this announcement, it's that Nintendo's screwing with me.

A while back, I put together a table of the number of games Nintendo had announced but not yet released for every month since launch. Or, more specifically, the number of games announced but not yet released on the first day of every month. Nintendo just announced a game on the second day of the month, to release the last day of the month. It's the longest possible announcement to release window that wouldn't show up on my table. Nintendo is clearly trying to sow doubt upon my methodology.

That or they have no idea who I am and are going for a short, quiet release because they don't expect much from the game. One of the other.

In any case, here's the table updated for the first of June. It's back up to a whole 3 games if you want to measure it on a daily basis.

Code:
Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec
2017 12 12 10 9 9 14 13 13 13 12 10
2018 12 18 16 17 15 17 18 16 16 16 15 13
2019 11 10 13 14 13 13 12 11 10 13 11 10
2020 10 10 10 9 9 9 9 8 9 13 12 11
2021 10 8 15 15 14 12 14 13 13 14 12 10
2022 9 8 14 12 11 11 9 7 7 9 7 6
2023 7 6 5 4 3 2

Also, with two games announced this year, Nintendo is now sitting at an average of 14 days between announcement and release for the year, which is a big increase over the previous zero days.

It has to be something that’s used in everyday life. Or something that is easy to use in every day life and convenience.

The Wiimote is like a TV remote, that’s used all the time.

The TS from the PDA, currently is used in everyday life.

So they went for TVs and pocket devices.

What’s next? A PC? Maybe the new system has a touch pad like the deck 😹

funnily enough, they also did it again for TV, but with the 3DS, but it never took off and they were banking on something that wasn’t destined succeed and it was abandoned by TV providers. The 3D.

Nintendo’s goal is the bolder above but also keeping the Nintendo switch concept. That’s already a challenge.

So, here is a question I posit to famiboards, and hopefully anyone and everyone can actually participate in this even a single post:

What is something of convenience or your home living you use in your everyday life that you think can be “gamified” by Nintendo?

Like just list things.

In this case I think it’s more to do with VRS, as nvidia does have it baked into their hardware since Turing. Tracking where your eyes are and adjusting the resolution in portable mode for that rather than have everything at once be “720p” or “1080p”.

More like a battery saver I suppose than a performance booster.

SD speed is not that bad at the end, or it is? And the speed is in the card, not the card reader, right? So, if someone buy a UFS card, the read speed will be of that card, right?

They’re both flash storage and Steam Deck has no dedicated decompression hardware, so the SSD is most likely being under utilized. The steam deck also doesn’t have that great of a CPU to make the best use of that at the same time.

It’s like how the switch doesn’t have that great of a CPU and the eMMC that can go noticeably faster than an SD card is underutilized.

So, Steam deck is like the switch in many ways. Bottlenecked to hell.

Edit: I haven’t actually watched the video for what it’s worth. I’m only commenting on what I think is going on based on what you commented.

My smartphone. How can Nintendo gamefy it? Like in Super Mario Party: a singular Switch with multiple users, the main user has the game and the secondary user can put his profile as Player 2 and rake in coins for when he plays Mario Party on his user. Nintendo can do this by enabling some sort of play with the smartphone by streaming the game the Switch is playing. It’s like a Wii U + Switch concept, but instead of a GamePad, it’s your smartphone. This can sorta be a viral strategy because:

• Person A has a Switch
• Person B is Person A’s friend, who doesn’t have a Switch
• Person B wants to play Mario Kart
• Person A starts Mario Kart and streams the game in Person B’s smartphone
• Person B playa Mario Kart in their phone
• Person B now has to leave, but the Switch leaves some data inside it (maybe in an app?)
• Person B buys a Switch and Mario Kart, and when they put their Nintendo account in the Switch, their Mario Kart data is there

1: I believe they patented that, yes, so I think it's very possible.

2: That's the technology behind Everybody 1-2-Switch!

I should clarify, when I originally made the question to the users of famiboard, it was more about something that is a central idea to the system, and is the concept of the system. I’m unsure how requiring your phone for playing the system would work though but I think they are doing this now with Everybody’s 1-2 Switch?

Can’t be certain.

The idea is that instead of nintendo having to spend/charge extra money packing in second screen with the console (which is kind of what happened with the WiiU), Nintendo could simply take advantage of the fact that nearly everyone has a smartphone by providing people with an app they can download on their smartphone that connects to the console to use as that second screen and provide a device that can attach joycons to the smartphones. They could even make it so that people can use their switch as that second screen by downloading a similar app on the switch. In addition to being a noteworthy new feature this would also allow for easier emulation of DS and 2DS.

Great. Nintendo is implanting MiiTok on Switch 2.
Actually you just reminded me, I think I’m on of the Q&As, Nintendo was asked about the metaverse when they responded what amounted to “if we can gamify it we will look into it, but at the moment it doesn’t seem possible”

Or am I misremembering this

they mentioned that about web3 at large. nfts, crypto, metaverse, etc. they don't see how they can make it "fun" yet so they're not jumping into it. smart thinking given the collapse and volatility. metaverses, separately, are just whored up MMOs spaces, so it's nothing they can't do and gamify

Since it was made public, this likely isn’t going to be used.

Most patents don’t end up for actually devices.

However, the prospect of 3D audio is cool.

This specific patent likely won't but this and the AR-VR connectivity patent suggests that they have been spending a signifcant amount of time trying out VR implementation for their next console.

No, that's not what I mean. I mean like, any other reveal leak/rumor that got bundled with the 1-2 Switch one.
Stinky Horse Game was leaked by Emily, who has talked, in the same breath, about two Fire Emblem games, one of which turned out to be Engage. I suspect her source for the FE games was not her Stinky Horse source however, and she's left the industry, so no follow ups.

There are plenty of potential improvements if you pair the technology with AI.

One simple gameplay application of eye tracking is target selection. Imagine the following scenario; you come across a group of five enemies and want to start attacking one of them specifically.

Currently, you need to press the targeting command and manually toggle until you land on the desired target. Note that many games have different target-tabbing systems - some go from closest to furthest, some do the opposite, others go from left to right, etc. It almost always requires some trial and error, which isn't very fun.

With eye tracking, all you would need to do is look at your target. The game could then lock onto it automatically, or you could press the targeting command to confirm the selection. In theory, this should be faster and more reliable as you almost always look at any target you want to interact with in a game, even if you don't continue staring at it afterwards. The idea isn't to turn the player's gaze into the main control method, but to use its natural behavior to augment the gameplay. With this, you could design an action game that rewards you for attacking different enemies or parts of a large enemy in fairly quick succession because switching targets is now fast and intuitive.

It may seem like a small improvement but it could really improve interactivity if done right.

I mean with VR, research into 3D audio is a must to work well with it.

When the switch launched in 2017, it was already using a very large battery already compared to other devices like high end smartphones/phablets of the time:

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 - 3300mAh
Nokia 8- 3090mAh
Samsung Galaxy S8:
  • S8- 3000 mAh
  • S8+ -3500 mAh
  • S8 Active- 4000 mAh
iPhone 8 Plus- 2691mAh
iPhone X- 2716 mAh
LG V30- 3300mAh

the iPad (5th Gen) by comparison: 8827 mAh
iPad Mini: 5124mAh

And then the Switch: 4310mAh
This made me curious how the modern counterparts of those other devices compare to their 2017-available versions.
Samsung Galaxy Note 20 (line discontinued in 2020) - 4300 mAh (+43%)
Samsung Galaxy S23 - 3900 (+30%)
Samsung Galaxy S23+ - 4700 (+34%)
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra - 5000 (+25%)
iPhone 14 Plus - 4325 (+61%)
LG V60 ThinQ (line discontinued in 2020) - 5000 (+52%)
iPad (10th Gen) - 7606 (-14%)
iPad Mini 6th generation: 5078 (-1%)

Didn’t know Emily Rogers left the industry. Would make sense, haven’t heard anything since the Project NX days.
I think she still hangs around here as a fan, but she moved on to other (non-journalistic, IIRC) pursuits.

Didn't watch it, but I seriously hate these thumbnails with the dumb expressions.
Pretty straight forward. Kit and Krysta confirming that this is likely exactly what it seems like - projects that might have been killed otherwise get a release because the dev teams have moved on to the next hardware, and that when they were at Nintendo, hardware variants were very strategically deployed, and the pastel Joy-Cons are a classic late-gen move.

Krysta says that the original 1-2 Switch was a boondoggle even at launch. Press was actively uninterested, and the dev team wasn't excited for it either.

Kit says that one of the late-gen challenges isn't just continuing to make money, but continuing to maintain a certain level of audience engagement, because you're going to need those eyeballs at the next big launch.

Everybody 1-2 Switch! announced. I would like to bring your attention to the fact 1-2 Switch, the original game, used the Nintendo Switch logo. This game uses "Switch" in the style of the Super Nintendo logo.

I am. Dead serious. I genuinely think this is in reference to the next system. Super Nintendo Switch, on shelves next to Everybody 1-2 Switch.
Nintendo Ouroboros launching holiday next year

release a 3D Donkey Kong game, Metroid Prime 4, a brand new Wario Land, the return of a dead or semi-dead franchise like F-Zero, Star Fox, and your consoles sales is gonna explode, is not hard to do this
