Catching up from pg 296 I would have thought a Direct got announced over the weekend, but I certainly didn't miss the excitement when tensions started running high 🙃

At this point, it seems fairly unlikely that there will be any event in July. This was always a distinct possibility, and at the time this thread was made the contingency plan was to simply convert this thread to the Fall Direct Speculation thread at the start of August.

  • this way will stick closest to the original seasonal schedule of these threads (with the Fall one just starting, uh, very early)
  • people enjoy these threads, even if there isn't much to speculate about

  • people are starting to feel a little fatigue from the constant speculation
  • the line between this thread and the General thread is increasingly unclear
  • this thread tends to be more cliquey and can be off-putting to newcomers

So, with this in mind, here are a few proposals for how to handle this thread (and Speculation threads in general) moving forward:
1. Continue with the current plan as outlined above
2. Leave this thread open, and allow these threads to exist more permanently with less formally defined rules
3. Close this thread, and open a new one mid-August
4. Close this thread, and retire these threads for a little while

We are of course open to any and all alternative suggestions. Thanks!

Hella belated, but I'm kind of in favour of option 3. God knows I'm guilty of burning myself out with the constant hype speculation, and I do find myself missing how the general thread is kind of quiet only moving a couple pages a day compared to what the speculation thread is doing when there's next to nothing on the horizon. I'd even be more open to waiting until late August to get a speculation thread up and running, but those are my thoughts on the subject

My personal vote is a re imagining of the Zelda 2 world as a full open world with both BOTW style dungeons and discrete dungeons like those in Zelda 2 and multiple towns and settlements

It can be open world but still go in a different direction though that is what I expect post BOTW Zelda 3D to be.

From Zippo, yeah, but Bandai Namco was recruting for a Nintendo 3D Action game so that's plausible at least.

I agree. My take on going in a different direction is increasing the ambition. A pretty obvious thing is to map in traditional dungeons into an open world while possibly still keeping the non linearity and exploration focus of BOTW.

I can remove the link if you prefer, but seeing how it unfolded with the Star Fox piece, the discussion will happen either way. However, it would be a bit hypocritical to talk about it and not source the rumor.
 
Zippo? isn't he unrealiable?
That said Sakurai is done with Smash so in that sense, he could focus some energy on a remaster if he wished. So it makes sense on that level, but probably not a realiable source.

That person does this all the time. People speculate / make accurate guesses about something / leakers or industry folks share info and then sooner or later he will come around with his Special Zippo Sauce of Bullshit™ piggybacking etc.

Kid Icarus was floated by a few people on this website when the hiring call came out. It would make sense, not only from the specifics of the call, but also given Sakurai has now spent a decade or so working with Bandai-Namco. He'd presumably have at least a supervisory role in that hypothetical remaster.

However, I'm cautious on the idea it's due next year. Didn't the hiring call indicate work had only just begun? How quickly would this kind of project get off the ground?

To be fair, somebody pretending to be an insider could do their guesswork based on the same information for the exact reason that it will look more plausible. I'm not saying it's necessarily the case here, just that even a fake insider would have the same prior knowledge we do to construct their lies.

Hoping it's true though, I missed the game on 3DS!

If you could choose one EPD team that you want to see in a next Direct, which one would that be? (EPD Tokyo, 10, or 9 (not sure if 9 has something to show). I would definitely go with Tokyo. I want to see it already, but if their next game is announced there I doubt we will have to wait till end of 2023 to play it. It should be out before Summer but not sure here since it would be close to Zelda's launch.
