• Hey everyone, staff have documented a list of banned content and subject matter that we feel are not consistent with site values, and don't make sense to host discussion of on Famiboards. This list (and the relevant reasoning per item) is viewable here.

Staff Post: Community Survey Update
  • Hey folks,

Apologies for the delay here - we had intended to collate everyone's responses earlier in the week, but it got away from us a little. Over 40 of your shared your opinion for what you think should happen for this thread or the Speculation threads more broadly, and we really appreciate each and every contribution. Community engagement is super important to us, and it's gratifying to know how much you all care about this site and the people on it.

Overall, the vast majority of you seemed to favor keeping these threads in some form or another, although the specifics of what form that should take varied quite a bit. Ultimately, based on all of the responses we received, we think the best approach is to let this thread stay open until the likely September Direct. Thanks to @Raccoon's slight title tweak, we won't even really need to "convert" the thread as I had originally described. Of course, as June taught us, a September Direct is by no means guaranteed, and if the Tokyo Game Show comes and goes without a peep from Nintendo, we can re-evaluate how to proceed. For now though, we think there's no harm leaving this thread open to serve whatever speculation purposes seem the most appropriate.

As always, if you feel yourself tiring of constant speculation, we encourage you to take a break. Luckily the Nintendo community is no longer isolated to a single thread, so hopefully you don't see this a "don't like it? Too bad!"-style dismissal, but instead a gentle re-direction to threads that better serve your vibe. A reminder to everyone as well to stay welcoming and inclusive - these threads tend to lend themselves to an air of cliquiness that we should all do our best to mitigate.

    Happy speculation, everyone!

Staff post regarding Shinzo Abe situation
  • The major act of violence perpetrated against Shinzo Abe is shocking, to say the least. As it is a developing situation, with much of the emerging, most relevant information being disseminated in Japanese (which the bulk of our userbase do not read, nor speak), we ask that members please aim to employ the highest degree of tact and sensitivity, in discussing the matter. Additionally, it is imperative that any further information that does emerge be accurate, and as such, we ask that members avoid posting any links to the usual array of random social media posts that typically arise, during difficult situations such as this one.

In light of this event, this is not the time to speculate about how it may impact the occurrence of a video game showcase. Please respect that.

    Staff Post: Community Survey
  • Hi folks, we'd like to survey the community a little to get a sense of what people want for this thread, and for the Speculation threads more broadly.

At this point, it seems fairly unlikely that there will be any event in July. This was always a distinct possibility, and at the time this thread was made the contingency plan was to simply convert this thread to the Fall Direct Speculation thread at the start of August.

    The rationale behind this plan:
    • this way will stick closest to the original seasonal schedule of these threads (with the Fall one just starting, uh, very early)
    • people enjoy these threads, even if there isn't much to speculate about

Some potential counterpoints to this plan:
    • people are starting to feel a little fatigue from the constant speculation
    • the line between this thread and the General thread is increasingly unclear
    • this thread tends to be more cliquey and can be off-putting to newcomers

So, with this in mind, here are a few proposals for how to handle this thread (and Speculation threads in general) moving forward:
    1. Continue with the current plan as outlined above
    2. Leave this thread open, and allow these threads to exist more permanently with less formally defined rules
    3. Close this thread, and open a new one mid-August
    4. Close this thread, and retire these threads for a little while

We are of course open to any and all alternative suggestions. Thanks!
