StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

Nintendo would never do shitty mobile games. And if they did, they would never include them into main series. Right? Right?

for better or worse it seems like they do consider Tour to be MK9. MK10SOON doesn't have to be anything earth shattering it's just a bit of fun to say MK10 is coming soon, presuming it was put there by the devs (knowing it would only be discovered with the home release). Soon could be anything from another 1-2 years off but here's hoping it's a Drake release title and there's no 2nd booster pass.

great entertainment value, i love it. this has more twists and turns than g.r.r. martin giving us a winds of winter release date

Here's a little something that's... ok, not all that related to Nintendo, but cute for those of us who want to play fantasy system design:

Jeez, 8 Gbit/1 GB GDDR6 chip price cratered from pandemic-era to now.
...I'm very curious as to what sort of price is locked in for supplying for the PS5 and Series consoles.

This can't have been a tease, since the next Mario Kart game will be MK9, not MK10.
No matter what you count the mobile game as, there will probably be no MK 9.companies tend to skip the number 9. iPhone 9, windows 9, macOS 9 etch, also this:

"Also, it's believed that the number nine isn't welcomed in many countries and cultures. The number has negative meanings in Asian languages, with one translation meaning a literal curse in Chinese and torture or agony in Japanese"

Ehh I doubt they would eat the additional costs associated with a two disc release just for a marketing gimmick.
Two PS5 Game Discs store 256GB WITHOUT file compression. A game would have to be awful full of... Poor decisions for it to require such generous...ness.

And yeah, it's not a Nintendo Switch Game Card; as others have said, discs are cheap, dirt cheap. A two disk BDXL game today costs no more than a one disc CD game from the 90s.

My point was sarcasm about how shitty mobile-Nintendo-to-please-idiot-shareholders is.
Regardless, Nintendo has treated the portable MKs and and the TV ones to be a single series, and Tour continues that trend. If for no other reason that Mario Kart 9 is likely the internal name for Tour, they won’t reuse it for the next one.

Once again, I know that, of course. I was trying (obviously badly since people answered seriously) to express how much I despise what Tour is and how much it is in perfect contradication about all I love so much about Nintendo, in my opinion. To be even more direct, Iwata was always relectant to that.

The ”major title from SGF” truly would not surprise me if it was Sonic Superstars. Nintendo and SEGA have a great relationship, Geoff treated Superstars as a pretty big thing, and it would be a great contender for a 4K patch.

...for the Nintendo Switch Family of Systems, huh Sega?

I'm sure you know more about that "Family" than we do.

This was back in 2011. You can't expect them to keep this kind of attitude for even a few years following, especially since this was before Wii U launched (and flopped) and 3DS slowed down hard in sales.

Alright, now my brain is alight. Why is Sonic Superstars for the "Nintendo Switch Family of Systems" when every other third party publisher says "system".

Why doesn't it have a concrete release date this close to launch?

And it's got me thinking.

A console launching with:

DLC for a Pokémon game and a next gen patch, essentially, launching with a Pokémon game.

Same re: Mario Kart, same re: Splatoon.

AND DLC and a patch for Tears of the Kingdom.

A new Mario or DK

And a new Sonic.

That's... One really, really healthy console launch. It both communicates "New Games" with a new Mario or DK, AND continuity with older games still in their support cycle AND an acknowledgement of cross gen with Sonic. It just... Sounds right. From every angle...

They can even give up on hardware and publish titles on PS5 if that's what idiots shareholders want. Not gonna like it, personally.

they would when the discs are cheap

What's the source for this? Given that the film industry is still primarily releasing on dual layer BDs, I would not assume triple layer BDs are as cheap as you are making them out to be.

I think the "family of systems" comment was just a combo of being a super formal press release and translation quirks. Plus, to me, REDACTED being folded into the Switch family would imply it's a Pro instead a new gen which is absolutely false at this point. Do we have any examples of Nintendo bundling same-brand successors (e.g. DS & 3DS, Wii & Wii U) into the same families? I can't recall any.

well we don't even know if this game is printed on such discs. FF7R was on two discs as well, so this might be the same thing. given how pretty much no other company is doing this, SE is doing it for the prestige, and is still charging the same price (or $70, but not for disc reasons), the difference is probably not so much bigger

film industry isn't game industry and that market is operating kinda differently which mediums

I’m not sure how folding Redacted into the Switch family would imply that it is a Pro. I think Nintendo very much wants a family of systems considering how much they talk about NSO & Nintendo Accounts.
That would be a great way to recreate the WiiU problem of "people think it's just an add-on not a new console".
Frankly no one is gonna think this unless they completely change the shape of the device & name it something like Super Switch.

SEGA of America, Inc. announced Sonic Frontiers is launching just in time for the holiday season on November 8, 2022 and is now available to pre-order for PlayStation 5 (PS5) and PlayStation 4 (PS4) consoles, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, the Nintendo Switch family of systems and Steam starting at $59.99 USD and will be supported with Smart Delivery on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.

Sonic is never considered as major title in China. When Chinese gamers talk about 'major title', they are basicaly refering games with impressive graphics or games from mega IP such as Pokemon and Mario.

not to nitpick, but there was a MacOS 9.

Not sure I follow, but I think I agree in spirit.
Whatever the name ends up being:
• Super Nintendo Switch
• Nintendo Switch Advance
• Nintendo Switch 2

They need to clearly communicate that it is the next generation of Nintendo Switch gaming. It’s the successor console. It’s the next big thing.

Combine that with the leaving presence of the OG Switch lineup, you’ll eventually end up with the new product, meaning that this is the next one you should have. It’s not a revision nor a midgen upgrade. It’s an entirely new console that’ll play bigger games that the predecessor won’t be able to.

Final Fantasy 9 erasure

Can we? In what way?

🤭

(I joke but, seriously, nothing really suggests we can or can't. I don't think it's unreasonable to speculate on the usage of "Family of Systems" by a third party publisher, however slim the chance it actually means anything might be.)
did you miss the frontiers copy above?

The average consumers relationship with technology in general has matured and evolved so much in the last decade. At this point I think we're babying the consumers and Nintendo too much by alluding the Wii U debacle. It was terrible, but It was also a unique set of circumstances that led to that, circumstances that would require a deliberate effort from Nintendo to make happen again. People are able to differentiate between iterations and successors.

Where have you been for the past decade 😭

And there was a promo once where they included MKTour as part of the main series(???) Mario kart titles.

But not something like the AR Mario Kart.

Switch 2's dock will include a weighted crank /s
The Ring Fit Adventure sequel is gonna be crazy!

Was that the one that also included a VR headset?

It was a patent. I was kinda hopeful that it was a concept for the next device, which allowed the 120 million Switches that are out in the wild to connect with it for asymmetrical play.

Imagine if it was VR, and this was a flagship title along with MK9 💥
That would be insane lol.

Day 0.

Lol, you can't compare what he said in 2011 and what they did in 2015. They were pressured to to mobile games because they were not in really great position.

Sorry that this is off-topic but I'm unsure what counting mktour as part of the main franchise has to do with anything "pleasing shareholders." It is just a choice they decided, especially since they're porting over tracks from said title.

20 days until I get to post "Future Nintendo Hardware Technology Speculation & Discussion thread has fallen, millions must play Everybody 1-2 Switch on their drifting launch model"

I’m not making any comparisons. I explain why personally I am symbolically quite hostile to the fact that Nintendo considers Mario kart tour as part of the main series. Precisely for the reason that you imply yourself: the reason why Nintendo went into smartphone games is that they were forced to do so by pressure from their investors while they were going through a difficult situation.

Mario kart tour and its deplorable micro-transactions would simply never have existed without shareholder pressure.

If FF7 Rebirth requires 2 discs on PS5, how many cartridges would a Switch case need to carry 😰
It doesn't work like this. NieR: Automata was over 40GB on PS4, while Witcher 3 was even more, but we have full games of both on cart on the Switch. Bloat is a thing, as are optimisations, as are architectural, efficiency, and performance gains. NieR: Automata was about a quarter of the size on Switch.

If the PSP piracy days taught me anything, is that developers leave a looot of unused junk inside the storage media when they’re passing the game
