Never stated the contrary. The Pandemic helped boost that streak.
I see this a lot, too. The narrative of huge parts of the Switch’s success being put down to “because pandemic” is overplayed to a point where it now comes across as downplaying its apparent success, and it doesn't hold up under proper scrutiny... AGAIN. Nintendo had similar success before a pandemic - the DS sold 30m+ a year twice in a row at its peak, and 112m within a 4 year window (23.56m, 30.31m, 31.18m and 27.11m). BUT what SHOULD have happened is more success for traditional stationary home consoles because we had to stay at home - Stationary consoles were also cheaper than the Switch at the time, and for a large part, many of their non-exclusive games were, too. The world was in quarantine, meaning that the "portable" and "play anywhere" element had become (temporarily) redundant - I mean, WHERE are you going to go to play when cities and towns are on lockdown? How much joy can be shared when you've been asked to isolate? Some people lost their working hours, while others could not return to their jobs, meaning that household incomes were reduced. Furthermore, when the Switch Lite was available, it never outsold the hybrid system, and when the OLED model arrived, it was received more positively than sections of the Internet would have some believe, because the thirst for a "Pro" or new system has been forever overstated. So much that even when the PS5 and XS dropped, neither could outsell the Switch - the PS5 couldn't do this in Britain in 2022, and some gamingtubers and publications are awfully quiet now that the system in its 7th year has returned to the top spot in its domestic market. It's wild that a system which sold around 18m units worldwide in its 6th year (6TH YEAR!!) is being called a "tech fail of a year which it didn't even release in" and "long in the tooth" - The gaming press isn't speaking the reality to its readership, and it's failing consumers around the world by trying so desperately to kill it off. It's an insidious agenda, actually... I feel that much like the Wii, the gaming community has to come to terms with the fact that Nintendo isn't their Doom Narrative, and they haven't stumbled into their success for reasons which don't fit. The masses love the concept, and with improved 3rdP support, a prospective successor can achieve higher heights. Finally, they're very capable of selling 100m+ portable devices each generation, and have the top 2 fastest-selling systems which achieved that point (DS and Switch).
Of course, but I still think it'll take a few years
Shoot me, but I don't think TOTK is going to sell that well
Relatuve to BOTW, that is. BOTW was the perfect storm, it was lightning in a bottle... and to mix meteorological metaphors.. i don't think it'll strike twice. Switch hype, plus it being one of the only games to play for a while meant that it got a mega boost in sales. Now the switch is dying, and TOTK is already very derivative of BOTW so it doesn't even have the thing of being a fresh new take on zelda...
I have no doubt it'll be an amazing game, but good game doesn't mean popular game
"Switch is dying" - Except Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Splatoon 3, and Bayonetta 3 saw their fastest-selling entries in their respective IPs not even a year ago.The best-selling Switch title appeared the following month (Mario Kart 8 Deluxe) - Also, within the first year, there was a point when the eShop was getting many new releases each week, with multiple Indies reporting their best sales on the Switch, so, like every Nintendo success, it got rubbished with “Switch users are starving for games to play”. Game droughts aren’t a thing, and they certainly never existed on the Switch. LOZ: Tears Of The Kingdom pre-orders point to similar successes as IPs from last year. Just because a few “Influencers” want new hardware, it doesn’t mean that what exists is “dying”. It wouldn't be a surprise if TOTK ends up being the best-selling title of 2023. I get that an extremely vocal minority of people on the Internet want new Nintendo hardware tonight, but this is unreal and a desperate reach.
