Okay, what is going on in THIS thread? What's with all this real fan/fake fan crap? Whoever is spouting such nonsense can go kick rocks. Sorry if I came across as aggressive there. Ignorance of that level really get under my skin.

wtf. I seriously thought GTA 5 released in 2012 all this time lol. Guess I thought of the reveal trailer that got dropped in 2012.
You're telling me bud 🙃 Perhaps this isn't the worst timeline at least when the latest entry was a spinoff that's been monetized with microtransaction hell for the last five years lol

"Lost some of your Pikmin squad? Recruit up to ten more for only $1.59 to complete the latest mission to locate missing rocket parts/treasure/food in a 2D sidescroller while competing against other online captains!"

when I talk about splatoon I am often met with the dismissal that I am a fake fan, because I didn't play much before February of this year

I had vowed not to discuss the game anymore but got a really funny kill and simply could not restrain myself from posting it

It does genuinely make me feel bad about posting here from time to time, but there is nothing I can do about it. I will never be a real Splatoon fan, real Pikmin fan, or real gamer, and I've come to accept that. It limits the discussions I am capable of participating in, and I do try to be mindful of this so as not to disrupt conversations with ignorance. However, at this time I do not see it as a reason to leave the site entirely.
The idea that there is a 'correct' way to enjoy games, and if you enjoy them differently you are a fake fan, is bafflingly stupid (this is not directed at you, but at the people who have made you feel this way)

Whenever I open a Splatoon 2 and I see that fucking news intro and you can't skip it I just literally want to turn off the game.
Honestly the "play how we want when you want," aspect of the Splatoon series is by far the worst part of it. Maybe in Ranked Modes things are fine, but there is simply nothing fun about long-ass intros, locked-off game modes and incredibly-limited map selections. All they do is make me want to play the game less. Same with the RNG character builds that force you into making your character look ridiculous if you want the most optimal build you've been given.

Eh, ignore that sorta stuff. Everyone plays the same games as one another, and they can form their opinions based on that. If someone is factually, truly wrong then that's still no reason to dismiss folks outright.

Meanwhile I bought Splatoon 2 at launch, beat Octo Expansion, have over 100 hours in it, and am less excited than quite a few board members here.

Neither the time you buy a game nor how much you play a game will ever dictate how much you enjoy a franchise. Anyone who says otherwise shall be sentenced to the realm of Stinky Horsedom.

For example, I love halo but I stopped playing halo infinite because the content is stale at the moment. Am I a fake fan for wanting to find another online game to play until we get more content for it?

And you even need to press ZL+ZR, you can't press any button you want.

I tried to like splatoon i love the music , art and aesthetic. but the single player bored me and the multiplayer was just okay but i dont enjoy it enough to play it over other shooters like Halo/Quake or Doom. so i think im skipping 3 myself

You know I am glad you talk about this.
Because I got told the same thing a few weeks ago by Star Wars fans because I loved the new Kenobi series.

It doesn't hurt me. But it just gives off bad vibes and makes one feel not welcome at times in certain communities.

Also reminds me of the time a few years ago after World of Warcraft Classic launched.

The global chat was full of "lol @ the noob who didn't play the original" when someone asked for help or guidance.
The community made me drop the game.

The internet is full of etilist jerk circles unfortunatlely

Take it from FamiBoards' resident #1 Super Mario Fan™️:

There is no such thing as being a real fan versus being a fake fan. Do you enjoy something? You can call yourself a fan of it. You don't need to experience every single entry or have knowledge of every single intricacy. Anything you haven't experienced yet is just another potential thing to enjoy, not something to admonish for not having experienced it. And if you don't want to experience those things and want to just like what you already like? That's okay too!

I’m similar as someone who likes the 343 Halo games and likes halo infinite as well. My main issue with infinite is the content and it just needs more to keep me going. I’m hoping forge with season 3 will fix that and I can enjoy it on my steam deck later in the year

Ironically, people who say others are not "real fans" aren't "real fans" themselves. They are just annoying gatekeepers.

They don't join in on the fun. They just stand miserable at the door trying to bar those who want to get in, and they fail more often than not.

Just wanted to say, if I ever called someone a "fake fan" of a series because they didn't do a ridiculous thing that would take thousands of hours of gameplay to actually do, or for any other ridiculous reason, in no way did I actually mean it.

I feel like this is an issue with like any fan community on the internet. I feel like regardless of what you like there will always be someone gatekeeping you to make you feel like you are not a real fan of the game/show/artist/etc unless you know every small bit of info and love everything without a single critic. Honestly makes me feel like a jack of all trades type fan instead of a specialist type fan lol but at the end of the day you are still a fan if you enjoy something

Same here. I actually did call some people are fake fans but if they took it seriously, then am very deeply sorry. Maybe I should use /s more often.

I absolutely loved The Force Awakens but I guess that opinion just doesn’t count among certain subsections of the fandom. People are weird.
I adored The Last Jedi and I literally got to a point where I couldn't even talk to my friends about Star Wars because they'd dogpile me for not liking the "right" Star Wars content. And I'm not talking about online randos, I mean in person friends. Gatekeeping is fuckin weird.

Who here votes that Raccoon is a True Fan of Splatoon 2 on the basis that he seems to enjoy the game
*raises hand*

🥲

If there is no Direct in September, I vote for a "Nintendo Direct Spookulation Thread" in October.

If there's no Direct in September, THEN I would start to worry. Pretty sure the only post-2022 games we know about are Metroid Prime 4 and BOTW2.

Currently listening to this, I'm being reminded of one of my biggest peeves with the Nintendo fandom regarding Directs; whenever substantial information is given via tweet, or press release or any way other than a Direct, some fans always go "WHY WASN'T THIS IN A/THE DIRECT?" and it's like who gives a fuck, really? You got the info anyway.
So true.

So, since there was recently discussion about these skits during Nintendo Direct presentations I actually made up a all of them that happened during Switch era. They are not really skits, or not as big as we were used to in Wii U/3DS era but it's a great way to look back while waiting for a September Direct.
*note Nintendo Switch Presentation 2017 is not included.

Yeah Luigi is definitely the hardest character to control in that game, but he’s best boi so I can’t not pick him.
Haha, definitely agreed! He deserves it the most!

Maybe I'm misremembering, but isn't Luigi known, even to this day, for poor traction in Mario platformers?
Yes, in SMB2, Lost Levels, the 3D games and NSLU (although iirc all characters in NSLU have those physics by default)
Definitely right! Forgot about the Lost Levels too! It definitely makes things a lot harder to me, and even platformers now that have any character with too "floaty" jumps trip me up, haha, especially after getting used to the "normal" physics with Mario.

hot take:

Super Mario Bros. 3 is better then World. Not only that but its still one of the best platformers ever even today.
Must have been really mindboggling in '89.
Can confirm, was playing it in '89.

It was one of my earliest experiences of music and visual design combining into an aesthetic that gave an emotional reaction. Mario 3 is literally a formative memory for me.
Was playing it on release too brother! It was pretty mind boggling for the time, definitely. Felt like the world was getting rocked (especially with the wizard movie, haha!), and rightfully so! Incredible, incredible game for the time, and it really still is, which yet again, is pretty incredible. I LOVE Super Mario World too, for sure, but man...Mario 3 just felt like a huge leap!

I prefer World myself, but it’s still crazy how advanced Bros. 3 is in comparison to the rest of the NES library. Most NES games are basically just tech demos, but Bros. 3 is a legitimately comprehensive game. Only other NES game I’ve played that matches it is Kirby’s Adventure, which came out 4 years later.
Kirby was awesome too! Gorgeous game still! Played through it, yet again, about 2 years ago and loved every moment!

I don't see what's so "hot" about this, when it's true.

If anything, the spicier thing to say would be that for all that World offers larger stages, the way the Cape (and Yoshi, to a lesser extent) trivializes a lot of the level design are things that keep it from being the tighter experience that 3 is. And I've happily 100%'d that sucker on SNES and the GBA.
Good points about the cape especially! It added a lot of verticality to levels, but yeah, a sense of tighter levels was lost. I really love the variety in that game though, and it was neat going back and retracing steps with the switches and things!

Ok I'll come clean as well, I'm not the guy in the picture
Haha, I don't believe it! :ROFLMAO: Why even say that? It's so uneggspected!

I have not completed Octo Expansion yet, I am even more fake than SamusHunter's leaks.
I tried to play Paper Mario 64 for the first time this year and I didn't like it at all.
But I enjoyed Sticker Star.

My rating for all the games I played in the series:

Origami King > Sticker Star > Color Splash > 64
