We’ve crossed 10,000 posts!! Less than a week to go for the Direct! What an awesome journey this has been together :)

Courtesy of Lbabinz on Twitter, Best Buy Canada just put up a bunch of new branded eShop gift cards with new artwork and currency values:
These are dollar amounts that haven't existed before for eShop cards in Canada.
Hmm, do other physical stores internationally have similar art for higher value eShop cards? (Last I checked locally we still only had the $A15/30/60 divisions with Mario, Peach, and Bowser)

is fe4 there? i know youre probably shitposting but i made an account to ask this. im so very desperate.

No.

Is that three questions per individual or for the collective? Does that count as one of the questions? Does that make it two?
Three questions for the collective.

Yes these questions count.

Sorry, I can not answer your last question because I have answered three total.

That's is all, everyone. You're welcome.

have you not heard? joy-cons are dead

Oh, heh, I just saw there's actually a thing this is from.

Is that a joke or a Switch 2 leak? Would be kind of a bummer since some of my favorite Switch memories are tied to table top mode and having two player games just good to go with only having to bring the Switch itself.

It looks like it's from some Nate and John on a Game & Talk podcast. What I saw suggests Nate thinks that Joy is Dead and will be replaced with some ROG Ally-alike, but that this is framed as speculation. It seems John agrees.

It gets a bit weird though, in that they indicate the Joy-Cons are uncomfortable (fair for people to think) and that they weren't particularly successful. John apparently always uses a Pro controller, even when gaming portably, thinks people didn't really use the Joy-Cons or the tabletop mode.

At least Nate acknowledges the successful business proposition of selling additional Joy-Cons, which might be why they could return in some form.

I ... do not find this compelling.

It seems most likely Nintendo will try to improve upon the Joy-Con, not remove it. the tradeoff otherwise doesn't make sense.

If they get rid of joycons, that's fine with me, because I've got a box full of them in my closet. But, I'd like whatever comes next to be more reliable in the stick department.

I don't remember. Does this thread get locked once the direct gets announced?
Chocolate Supra has the correct answer just above me (thanks Choco!). This thread gets closed on announcement or on shadowdrop unless Pyoro starts leaking at which case it remains open until the Direct finishes airing.

Eh. I really don’t care about a reveal for something 6+ months out. I’d rather see a new game or two.

I’m in the same boat - I’m still very happy with my regular Switch and wanted more classic ports for it, particularly Prime 2 and 3 as it will feel wrong to me to only get 1 and maybe 4. I also feel like this next Direct being a Partner, Mini, or General shouldn’t have any impact on when the next console is revealed; a modest General just dating all the already-revealed first-party games with 1-3 new ports along with all the third-party stuff wouldn’t take away from the next big thing at all. Like I’ve said before here, I feel like the best “everyone wins” solution is still giving the Switch several more heavily desired ports, making the next system backwards compatible so they can be played on it, and putting all the brand new games / non-remasters on Switch 2.

I'm trying to guess what the opener and closer reveals can be. We no longer have an MH games, which tend to be a part of Partner Showcases, so whatever opens the Direct will be a brand new stuff. Asano's next title should be the opener and for closer, it needs to be something as big as 3 Persona ports we had in June 2022. And Persona ports were pretty big deal.

I'm thinking:
  • GTA4-5 ports (5 single player only)
  • Something from Microsoft (MCC finally?)
  • Persona 3 Reload maybe?
  • Something out of nowhere by Square. Chrono remake? FF13 trilogy? Final Fantasy Tactics A3? Kawazu's FFCC project he teased a few times?

I believe Take Two still has a remaster due out before the end of the fiscal year, but I'm not sure if they reconfirmed it today.

Silksong would be pretty big, and the potential dates people are throwing around are almost exactly 5 years after the reveal.

I don't think they talked about unannounced games this time. But yes, I've heard from my home country's Take Two distributor, there are few Switch (not the successor) titles coming from them in 2024, aside from NBA. Something's definitely coming.

Level-5 will probably pop up again at a Partner Showcase. Put a date on Fantasy Life and Decapolice. Lorelei and the Laser Eyes will also probably show up, given that it was revealed in a partner showcase too.

It’s hard to pin down a strong closer though, there aren’t really any big name ports left that are on the level of Persona 5 in terms of hype and requests. Especially since Switch 2 is so close.

Well, besides the obvious one. But Silksong doesn’t exist, so I’m not counting it.

Beyond Good and Evil seems like a good one too

Still don’t think it would be a true partner one, we’re due an NSO update/new n64/gba roadmaps

Megaman starforce collection
Layton world of steam trailer
Sonic x Shadow Generations
Plucky Squire
Penny’s Big Breakaway
Dragon Quest remake
Deca Police

Idk I can’t remember much else, I’m sick with chills and sleepy

Miles Edgeworth collection?

They already officially revealed the game it might not be there at all. Ubi could have that leaked Anno 1800 port but i don't think it could be a opener or closer.
They didn't really reveal it, it got leaked out early and they had to acknowledge it. There's no trailer for it yet and I believe there's no official screenshots either.

do people think a Penny's Big Breakaway shadowdrop would be big enough to close on for a partner direct?

Because I definitely have a feeling that it's coming pretty soon; on a Giant Bomb show today, Jeff Grubb mentioned he'd been given a code for it, so it sounds like review codes are starting to circulate despite the game still not having a release date

I don't think it's big enough for a closing spot. I could see it being the opener though!

My dream 3d mario game is an open world. The bowsers fury concept taken to the next level, with tons of levels and obstacles built right in to the world. But, I’d also be happy with a 3d land/ 3d world successor at some point too. Thats some of the most fun multiplayer gaming I’ve ever had even ten years later

What ever it is, I hope we get another bomb ass trailer like this

an innovative open world and even bigger hype marketing for the 3d mario game 🤩

So at this point Fami Fam, we need to be hoping the direct is a partners showcase , that way them revealing the next Switch will be more likely next month
I've been hoping that since September. Save all the goods for the Switch 2 conference, even if it's cross-platform. Best to showcase all the games in the best light with the highest fidelity and smooth framerate

I just got done reapplying my clown makeup to give my one and only prediction for the Direct.

It will happen on the 14th. Valentine's Day. 5 years to the day since the announcement of Silksong.

New trailer. Game looks incredible, obviously.

Shadowdropped after the Direct. Boom. It's finally here.

Never thought i would ever type these words but if its revealed the next direct is a general and not a partners showcase then sad times for this board as we ponder if the March stuff is still correct

I know the logic was put forth and perhaps Nintendo does indeed see it that way ultimately, but I really don’t think a General or Mini Direct Vs Partner’s Direct has any bearing on a Switch 2 reveal in March. At absolute most maybe Peach is a factor, but if the system and games are ready to show they are ready to show.

March was what people were saying last year, at the same event where Nintendo was showing the system off behind closed doors. And now we have multiple people saying they have even more sources saying March is it.

A Direct won't change that. March has been it since before we were even tripping about this year's Direct.

Matter of fact, I'll bet my avatar on it.

Yall hear me??

If the Switch 2 isn't revealed in March
I'll change my happy lil Sonic plushie avatar
to a sad lil Sonic plushie avatar.

Yeah I really wanted a General but everyone seems to think it's a Partner based on some of the games they heard was going to be there. Still I would think Nintendo has more for the Switch 1 planned then what has been announced. Otherwise it's going to be a pretty baron year for the old system lol. Who knows, there is always a small chance that everyone is wrong and we get a General Direct or at least a Mini where we maybe get a first party game or two.

Weren't the Switch 2 theorists saying there'd be a period of cross-gen games? Does the idea that a Switch 2 reveal rides or dies upon a perceived lack of upcoming games not directly contradict the idea of a cross-gen period?

I really don't think the nature of this direct means anything less you believe any and all support from Nintendo for the Switch 1 will immediately die the second the Switch 2 is announced.

I don't think it's that the hardware reveal rides or dies on a lack of upcoming games, I think the reveals of upcoming games are being held back to be shown off in their best form on Switch 2.

Prime 4 as example, assuming it's cross-gen, I expect showing the Switch 1 version first and then later showing the Switch 2 enhanced version would not have the same impact as showing the best, prettiest version of that game first, to knock socks off. Hell, that may very well be why there's been radio silence on that front all this time.

And I wouldn't be surprised if that's why there aren't many revealed games so far this year. They might wanna show off their big 2024 titles on Switch 2 and then say "btw these will also be playable on Switch 1, albeit at lower resolutions)" instead of showing them off now (or last year, or whenever) and saying "btw these will also be playable on Switch 2 with higher resolution" later. I think one of those approaches has far more hype potential.

I think the idea is that Nintendo will be wanting to showcase those with the new hardware, though I agree in that I thought it would make sense to show them and then bring them back at the reveal to showcase the improvements. Granted, I also figured these should be packaged as both on one cartridge, making an even stronger case for the feature.

I don't think so. I think the idea isn't so much "no upcoming games = Switch 2 announcement imminent", but instead "Switch 2 announcement imminent = they'll wait a bit longer to announce upcoming games"

So like, instead of a general direct now, they could instead do a partner for 3rd party obligations, announce Switch 2 in March, and then do a mini(?) a little later that announces upcoming 1st party games but with the benefit of now being able to freely talk about them being cross-gen/backwards compatible. Same amount of games announced/releasing, just getting a little creative with the order the information is conveyed

I like that combo on the $150 card. However, I wish Pauline were somewhere on there, too. Maybe she could be $200.

I hope they never release a Kirby one with a really high value because I'd have to think about buying it.

Or even simpler: Feb partner for 3rd party obligations, then announce Switch 2 in March alongside all the big 2024 games, similar to the Jan 2017 Switch Presentation.

If Nate was hearing about March at Gamescom, correct me if I'm wrong but I think its most likely that he was hearing that specifically from third party devs. And if March's presentation is not a big games blowout then I kinda doubt third parties woulda even needed to be informed of it, ya know?

Hell, it might even be possible that Nate is thinking the Feb Direct is a Partner not because he knows what games are in it, but because he knows what games are showing up in March.

Catching up from a busy week:

Partner Direct, huh? That seems a bit odd to me, given the lack of anything post-March that’s dated. Twitter drops for dates would work fine for TTYD and LM2, but unless they’re both H1 games then there’s going to be a gap there. And then there’d be nothing after that.

I don’t know, just feels strange. Not doubting but it makes me wonder what the structure of the Switch 2 reveal will be and if it will contain games or be a larger event than we thought.

that peach-daisy-rosalina-pauline $200 eshop card needs to have a gold background 🤩
