Me yesterday: sends dm to Andy Robinson from VGC saying Nate thinks the Direct of next week is a Partner Showcase.

Andy today:
This month’s Nintendo Direct could be a Partner showcase, it’s claimed

Wow, you're an influencer now!

People knowing this early about the Switch 2 reveal means it's going to be more than just a trailer.
I expect a January 2017 level presentation next month.

EDIT: Imo this also implies the release date is closer than most people think.

Speculation on my part, but could it be that Pyoro only has info/sources for Nintendo stuff, so a Partner Showcase with only third party content would be out of their range?
He has leaked other stuff beyond Nintendo, he just mainly leaks for them because that what people who listen to him care about

If there's no word tomorrow, then I'll raise an eyebrow.

But for now, I just assume Pyoro is fully aware of the power that's in their cartoony appendages once they say anything.

It was both of them. We just bring up Dring more because he was the one who continued to double-down on twitter, then insisted Mario Wonder wasn't a "big game" in order to continue to be right.
Yeah, Dring said it first, but there was some definite circling of the wagons when people called him out.

MS sure will like Nintendo revealing their next system this soon.

A better distraction from their current shitshow doesn't exists.

Random thought/bad take, if this month is partner and next month is reveal. Does it mean the ones in this partner showcase aren't good enough/close enough (w/Ninty) to make the reveal/crossgen/etc party?

"Remaining third party content" is an interesting idea because Switch already has a third party game confirmed for 2025 and I expect indies and smaller developers to support Switch after Nintendo themselves are done.

If there's a partner direct this month and a Switch reveal next month it's hard to believe it's just a trailer drop. They have announced games that need more details and dates.
They have other ways of communicating release dates.

How does this imply anything of the sort? We knew when the first Switch was going to be revealed months ahead of time thanks to leakers.

I assume it's more to do with platform availability, anything in the PS will be coming to Switch. The hardware reveal will probably just have 2witch exclusive 3rd party, graphical showcase shit etc

Yeah, new Warriors, or maybe something along the lines of Cadence of Hyrule is a strong possibility.
Just go ahead and put a section in the middle of a Partner Direct, filled with Nintendo collaborations like these.

Gimme an SMTIV + Apocalypse remaster
Ah, yes, that would be a good one.

But there's really a lot of potential games that could be shown at such a direct.
  • DQ3 HD-2D
  • DQ10 Offline international release
  • Daemon X Machina 2
  • Hyrule/Fire Emblem/Xenoblade/etc Warriors
  • Buddy Mission Bond international release
  • Yakuza ports (this is on the list for Derachi specifically)

  • Sonic Dream Team
  • Another Eden
  • Fantasian
  • Silksong
  • Yes I know I'm dreaming with all these
  • Chrono Trigger

Pizza Tower
Videoverse
Slay the Princess
GTAIV
Dark Souls 2 and 3
Any Yakuza
Mass Effect Trilogy
Tomb Raider reboot
Old Vanillaware games
Radiant Historia
SMTIV, Devil Survivor 1 and 2

That's without the whole segments for Level 5 and (heh) Rare/ware (okay, yeah, that one's not happening).

That said, in some ways a Partner Showcase seems an odd choice. Nintendo has enough announced yet that could benefit from the additional time in the spotlight before marketing switches, and then there are the rumored/assumed titles.

Take the Partner Showcase you're imagining. Now add the Side Order overview, Splatoon 3 and MKD8X tournament mentions, dates for LM2 and TTYD, NSO roadmap update, sizzle reel including MvDK and Showtime, and just one or two other rumored or announced first-party titles. Congratulations, your Partner Showcase has evolved into a general Nintendo Direct.

I suppose it could be justified to an extent if Nintendo wants to save their upcoming announced titles up for an initial New Hardware reveal, where they highlight cross-gen support. My suggestion for that Switch+ sort of line would have leant itself to making some announcements and following up with this, a sort of acknowledgment that these titles are safe to buy now.

We absolutely didn't, people were completely in the dark in 2016, waiting for the reveal trailer month after month.
The only person who knew about the October reveal was Emily Rogers, and she didn't find out either until a few days prior.

Me, I'm mostly interested in Nate's very specific wording on "the first Direct of 2024." I think the first Direct is a canary in the coal mine that will reveal more of Nintendo's Switch 2 launch strategy.

Combined with Necrolipe saying he has a specific reason for wanting this to be a Partner Direct, I'd wager it's because if it is a Partner Direct it points to a larger Switch 2 reveal Direct presentation in March with a first party game blowout that outlines Nintendo's plans in full for 2024 and gives a good idea of Switch 2 release and cross-gen games, additionally confirming full backcompat.

Guessing Nate's Partner Direct expectation is such because he is aware of a Switch 2 reveal in March, knows of first and third-party titles that should be featured there, and thinks it's potentially a bigger event than just a Twitter/YouTube video drop like the Switch 1 reveal in October 2016.

Meanwhile, if it's a full Direct next week, that may point to a "stay tuned for more info later this year" Switch 2 announcement in March as Nintendo would be outlining their Switch 1 titles for the first half+ of the year, and potentially puts backwards compatibility a bit more at risk as it separates out Switch 1 and Switch 2 games in terms of marketing, as Nate has said.

I'd bet Nate is thinking of the following release options, and taking an educated guess based on his information that #1 is more likely:
  1. Switch 2 blowout in March, featuring cross-gen games for Switch 1 and 2 and Switch 2 exclusive launch titles, followed by a more in-depth look on those games in a June Direct and a release in September/October - or even earlier?
  2. Switch 2 teaser reveal in March, similar to Oct '16, followed by a more full-fat presentation in a June Direct, in-depth look in a September Direct, and a launch in November.

So if Switch 2 is shown in March is it unreasonable to think Nintendo would hold a General Direct in May? I honestly couldn’t tell you what would fill the April slot for Nintendo this year though. Perhaps some 3rd party game from the Partner Direct.

It’s so easy to just claim they’d have that E3-esque Direct in June due to patterns but I feel this year can be the exception just how we are potentially getting a Partner Direct next week and not the usually anticipated General Direct.

There is still a few months gap between that E3-esque Direct and the potential fall release of Switch 2 and if they claim as they always do that this new hardware wont just be a simple replacement to the current one then it would behoove of them to show Switch owners what games they have to look forward to throughout the months no?

Especially when this story began circulating:

Apparently literally Super Mario 1 was made by the C-team :ROFLMAO:
A side note, I really find the longevity of Nintendo employees to be super impressive. I beat Super Mario 64 yesterday (the most recent of many, many replays over the years) and I was surprised to see names in the credits that I still recognize as working at Nintendo today, such as Tezuka and Koizumi.

I see, more people are finally embracing an early March reveal for Switch 2.

Good, that's the first step. Next you gotta embrace the reveal being a Switch January 2017-style event and the release isn't far off, and thus join Team H1 2024.
And yes, we do have cookies.

Oh, I've pretty well been here. It's why I figure the console need not launch, necessarily, with the most expected heavy hitters. The absolute fanatics can fight over buying out the initial available stock, and then the big guns come out to coerce the next group for holiday sales.

Fun fact: Toru Ozawa, the script director for Ocarina of Time, was the script supervisor for Astral Chain.

Right now if Nate's right about "february partner, March reveal for Switch 2", I'm thinking TTYD could end up being an April or May game and then some kind of direct around May "mostly focusing on Switch 1 games" with things like FE4 remake, Prime 2/3, things of that nature that could get them through the summer

Nintendo usually is pretty good about keeping to one retail game a month, but in a Switch 2 launch year I could see them skipping a month or two here and there, maybe being closer to a retail game every other month until Switch 2 arrives

Week 7 - What do you most want to see from this Nintendo Direct both realistic and otherwise and why? Also, what games will shadowdrop if any?
Honestly I do believe that if Gamecube games are the de facto shadowdrops in the future, Luigi's Mansion would be next to slide in just before LM2 (unless that's dated August or later, in which case maybe they'll save LM for not-E3 in June). Not sure what GC game would be shadowdropped otherwise, maybe Metroid Prime 2+3?

I mean, I would want to see a great number of series make their grand returns, but if this is doomed to be a partner direct then I guess I would want to see more Western third parties stand up with their full studio efforts and not just small indie titles. It's nice that EA has thrown us a couple bones here and there and gave a full fledged FC2024, but I want to see where Need For Speed is, where the Mass Effect Trilogy is, a Mirror's Edge duology, a revival of SSX. We've had a messy launch of GTA III trilogy, so what's with GTA IV and V if they brought development of those ports in-house? Yes yes, not enough storage space for GTAO, but if R* is stubborn/dumb enough to think that if they can't have all the money they don't want any money, then I even doubt GTA VI showing up on Switch 2.

If Fromsoft is dedicated on porting Elden Ring to Switch 2, what's with 360 games Dark Souls 2 and 3 not getting a port to Switch? The older Armored Core not worth the effort, nor Metal Wolf Chaos despite coming to PS4/Xbone in 2019? What's going on with Soul Calibur Bamco? Is it not worth the hassle to get all three characters returning for 2 HD, let alone any of the other entries?

I will continue to not hold any expectations for a Partner Showcase, because I'm not going to see any meaningful movement from any AAA let alone AA series show up here.

They also should be providing another roadmap for NSO but we're just gonna be stuck in limbo because christforbid they actually let us know when Super Smash Bros is being added with subpar online that can only be played with people on our friend's list.

e: I think my foul mood this morning afternoon, whatever, is contributing to an otherwise negative post. Apologies.

I was thinking about it but it makes sense now that, if the September 2023 General Direct was the final one exclusively focused on the Nintendo Switch and before the next console is revealed, it ended on the sizzle reel that was only Nintendo first-party projects. It showed what was left in the tank for Switch prior to the next console's reveal and did give a definitive marketing tool to show "What's left for Nintendo Switch in September 2023 and Beyond". It felt weird in the moment that the sizzle reel happened but it makes sense! :)

No? Details leaked in June, including the planned at the time September reveal window. Granted it got pushed to October, but it was almost assuredly true considering everything else from the leak was too. That's when we got details of a hybrid console with detachable controllers

To be honest Nate should've said "with what I've heard, the general consensus is that it's a Partner Showcase."

That would've been an amazing way to tease the Partner Showcase
