StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

Also, the second thread makes it obvious it's someone who closely follows Switch 2 speculation, which is a huge red flag. Going on about A78C cores versus the PS4, or specific flash storage read speeds, doesn't come from industry info. Somehow they're only "leaking" specs which are already frequent topics of speculation, and a March window of some kind but only in the same vague sense we were given from the Gamescom reporting. Someone in the thread even called them out for repeating western (aka our) speculation. I think this is bullshit and should be completely disregarded.

Also worth nothing that there's no proof the first and second thread were even made by the same person. They probably were, but there's no way to know.

Even the Ridge Racer 8 thing was talked about Doctre 4 months ago who is closely connected to this forum. Nothing there is an original thought, just seems like a waste of time.

Leaks comprised mostly of foreign language characters and cool acronyms are clearly the most trustworthy.

The API for Switch is called NVN, but it is hard to find information about it. Some video game programmers I follow on Twitter talked about the different APIs and one of them ranked NVN as one of the best to work with. As a programmer myself I would be really interested in it. But he also said that Metal from Apple is also high on his list because it is easy to work with but also you can go really low level.

Edit: Found the tweet.

Deko3D is a homebrew API that targets the Tegra X1 that is in the Switch. GNM/GNMX are the APIs for the Playstation. One of them is more low level the other more high level

Edit Edit: Link to Deko3D for the interested:

Console APIs are heavily NDAed, do you're not going to get people publicly discussing the details of them.

So in regards to the modernization of the nIntendo eshop video, are they referring to updating the current eshop or one in the future?
Those are one in the same. The video is primarily about the eShop backend, which, at least based on how they described it, hasn't been wholly restarted since 3DS.

Briefly skimmed over the video and it seemed like it was about taking the 3DS OS and both moving it to the Switch as well as adding/updating services on it.

Yeah I know. When I still studied computer science, I programmed a little bit in OpenGL. Because I was interested, I looked into Vulkan and DirectX12 but it is so much more complicated. Just setting everything up to have a triangle on the screen takes a lot of work and understanding. Sadly the next better API from his list (Metal) is only available on a Mac, but I don't want to buy one, because C++ programming is so much better with Visual Studio instead of XCode.

it's about how they updated the backend of the eshop. it's nothing that would hint at anything. "the restaurant's kitchen got modernized" essentially.

My understanding is that the newer, low level APIs like Vulkan, DX12, or Metal are designed to let applications handle things that would traditionally be done by the driver, which gives more control, but makes the whole process more verbose. It's good for game engine designers, but less so for random small applications.

Is there any details on RFC9330? Like how much better is it? Any sign that Microsoft is planning to use it?
Lots of companies are. I wouldn't be able to tell without setting up an intentional bottleneck and doing packet analysis. The use of it isn't something that's typically advertised. They'd just advertise better streaming.

This is the most layman friendly description of it I've found - https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2023/10004/ - it relies on Explicit Congestion Notification which has been in the wild. It's also built into a bunch of QUIC implementations. I suspect that the combination of the two will make for a fairly good experience. Basically it's a mechanism for routers to tag packets that have had to sit in queue, so the client receiving the video stream can report back to the server originating the stream and that server can change video compression parameters to improve the latency.

Honestly, it also depends on the game. For games like pinball FX or super mario RPG, HDMI lag is going to cause me issues. OTOH, Diablo IV doesn't seem to matter much, and the only place it matters for Mario Kart is timing the start for maximum acceleration and not spinning out.

It was about this time a year ago that Nate laid to rest the idea of a launch alongside Zelda (and likely a 2023 launch at all, IIRC). (Or maybe it was next week, between Christmas and New Year’s.)

This place was a fucking mess that week. And now look at where we are.

Then a few weeks later he said the infamous Late 2024 or even early 2025 comment in a podcast.

Good times lmao.

Wasn't a new Ridge Racer rumored to be coming to Switch years ago? Seems like we are seeing rumors being recycled now. Perhaps trying to will it into existence?

IIRC, it was uncovered from the same job postings as Metroid Prime 4, back when it was with Bamco.

I thought it was pretty obvious but Nintendo have to be 10 times more cautious about these things than Sony or Microsoft because of their family friendly image. All it would take is one kid receiving a dodgy message or a comment via their headset and they’d be met with headline news stories about how their system was used to groom a child. An exchange of friend codes leading to communications could be done online also and potentially make them liable so ‘friends only’ wouldn’t completely cut it. If they can keep most communication off system then that’s safer for them. To be honest, I’ve found it easy enough just setting up a multi person call on my phone when playing with friends.

I've said it before.

Real Racing 8 will be released at the same time as Nintendo NS2!

Here's some new information.

I heard Capcom is releasing a new

New XX Hunter.

It's got names like Wild in the title.

You can call him

XX Hunter Wild!

I'm in the industry!

NS2 will be able to play MH6!

MH6 was developed natively for PS5!

It's been around since before 2020!

Luckily.

The A78C is the best CPU for the PS4 PRO! (assuming this means "better CPU than PS4 Pro")

Each core is three times bigger than the PS4!

Not to mention the 8 cores!

Even PS4 level games can run at 60FPS.

I heard that RDR2 was the first game to be released on NS2!

PS4 PRO is only 30FPS.

The NS2 version is 60FPS.

Also, the NS2 version is 60FPS.

NS uses eMMC faster than PS4.

But not as fast as NVMe on PS5.

But NS2 uses UFS 3.1.

It's actually faster than SSD!

The floating point era is over now!

The era of engine scalability is over!

NS2 still has FSR2/FSR3/DLSS available!

Before March 2024, there will be a major release!

The future of the C Society Wyrm Castle / DMC5 / SF6 cold rice continuously issued!

The thread was posted December 15th, correct? That's after TGA.

This post on the Chinese forum is 100% bullshit.

Nintendo uploaded this Switch commercial, I'm surprised they didn't know any 2023 games on there. They focused on Breath of the Wild, Odyssey, Bowsers Fury and Sword and Shield.

They’re selling to people that haven’t purchased a Switch 7 years in - I too would recommend Breath of the Wild and Odyssey.

They literally said "late to the dock discussion" at the start of their reply and then later mentioned a hypothetical where OG Switches could connect to a docked NG Switch. It was also within the larger context of a conversation talking about adding some sort of streaming capacity to the dock.
Yes, and the entirety of the reply beyond "Late to the docking discussion" was about accomplishing the same means without doing anything to the docks. Which is the simple solution, because it's already in our hands.
Personally, I think they'll kill the voice chat section of the NSO app by the time switch2 is out and leave voice chat entirely up to developers (on a per-game basis).
You know... exactly how it is currently.
That would, though, mean either removing a feature from some pretty big evergreens, or going back and patching an alternative into those games.

3DS had a messaging app and it was shut down 2 years later:

The mobile app and simply allowing 3rd party games like Fortnite to implement is Nintendo way to wash their hands. If the parent gives the minor a smartphone or it happens in a 3rd party game, thats on them.

That's not to say they can change their mind or the people in conmand changes, but it was a choice. Just like the web browser being inaccessible to avoid being hacked.
Pretty much this. In fact, I have a hard time seeing Nintendo going back to some of their service. Their message board, the miiverse? Why? When you can share your content on the mainstream media and get free advertisements.

However, Qualcomm intends to have RISC-V be competitive against Arm, at least in the automotive and embedded sectors thus far, by partnering with Bosch, Infineon, Nordic, and NXP.

Ever the optimist.
2024 holiday season having the next system surely isn't optimistic. 😅
When I say "alone", I mean alone in marketing, the only device Nintendo is selling (by pre-order or otherwise).
A January reveal, maybe that's optimistic, but there's little evidence against it at the same time.

People don't want to hear my pessimism anyway! Protracted cross-gen, weak first party support in the first year, no new OS features, reusing the OLED dock and its limitations, slow or no expandable storage, out of date WiFi support, etc. 😵‍💫

I'm ready to be optimistic about the timeline and raw power, I am not so confident about the trimmings.

The problem is thinking parental controls work.
Most of the times parents don't know about it, know it exists but don't know how to use it or straight up don't care.

The way Nintendo addressed this debacle on the switch was basically the path of least effort.

That said, like I mentioned on a previous post: they could leave it to the developers to implement it (voice chat/text messages) on a per-game basis or add a ps5-like implementation of discord.

It is the latter. They don't want their kids to whine because they can't do this or that.

Parental controls are sufficient to meet Nintendo’s needs. It’s not Nintendo’s job to parent others’ children - it is their job to ensure that the controls are robust and effective when utilized. The standard for experiences online can’t be set against the needs of adolescents when the majority of owners are young adults and older. It’s creating a needlessly hamstrung device.

Also, per-game implementations are a rubbish option, and asks more of developers than being able to lean on system level functions (like every other version out there…)

Anyway I said I was done talking on the subject here so I’ll stop responding.

Hopefully the existence of a main racing series on Switch 2 means that it'll get analog triggers.
I sure hope not, not on a platform where Splatoon 3 exists. Pressure sensitive shoulder buttons I'll agree with, plus those can easily fit into the size constraints of a Joy-Con.

Yeah, I would prefer pressure-sensitive buttons like on the DualShock 2 over analog triggers. Pressure sensitive buttons like DualShock 2 would be better than analog triggers.
I don't want to play Splatoon and Smash with analog triggers.

Technically, Nintendo's never had analogue Z buttons ever! It's only ever been L and R, so it would make sense to continue that. Quick response triggers, and clicky shoulder buttons that can measure your input after the click... Especially good with transistive touch scrolling input, as ever!

This is the leak that is currently making the rounds in China for having guessed MH Wilds.
It is a rumor of Ridge Racer 8 on Switch2.
What do you think?
HgoGBgI.jpg

MH Wilds was leaked by Dusk Golem, so can I believe that? 🤔
They said the Chinese title is "狂野" but the actual title is "荒野", while these two words can both be translated as "Wild". So imo the poster doesn't actually know the Chinese title and it's just a fabrication based on Dusk Golem's leak.

That won't stop our lurkers from making YouTube videos about it tomorrow though 😏
"Listen listen, I know I know, you're tired of these switch 2 rumors. I am too, believe me! But I have to report the news."

Then there's the safe bets.

"I knew about this for weeks, but I tried to stay quiet. I just got confirmation.... the Switch 2 had buttons. Yes, yes, I know, it is crazy!"

Yes, He only said it has a subtitle "like" 狂野.
標題中有狂野等名字

That should shut that rumour up. Nice catch!
