But, thinking about it....are we even sure that there's a Direct coming? Like, what are we even expecting to see at this point?

Called it.

And who is honestly surprised? What else do they even have to show? This is a twilight-years game, for a system in its twilight years. Stopgap-, hold-the-fort-ware until the Switch successor comes next year with the real games.

September 13th looking REAL good rn, if it sticks I think we might have a new pattern for September Directs in relation to TGS lol

Yeah I think its just one last push for the end of the switch lifetime. 2d Mario sells good enough for the console to sell a little bit more until the switch 2 comes out next year.

If Metroid Prime 2 shows up at the next General Direct and is the only Metroid-related announcement, do you all think that it is safe to assume we are in a countdown?

Prime 1, 2, and 3 will all appear and then the next General Direct after all 3 have been released shows Prime 4?

Except...we've had directs like this before a general one before? Like, this is common. I don't know if there's going to be a direct but I do not understand people proudly rushing to declare something as fact when the exact scenario you say won't happen...has happened.

Mini on the 13th, contains a bunch of 3rd party information + legacy ports/remasters/remakes + Teal Mask shadowdrop, book it

I'm sure we'll still get a freshly branded Nintendo DLC Direct in mid September, with TOTK/MK8/S3/P4 goodies, but I wouldn't count on a general.

I think all of this just verifies just how news-adverse Nintendo are in modern times. Always the bare minimum.

I swear people said the same thing in June

Count on a general. We still don't know the actual name of that Princess Peach game and we have this FE4 remake to be announced. Not to mention tens of rumored third party games, including Capcom surprise, a Forever remake and Feral ports.

Maybe. Going by that trend though it would be...

Prime 1- Feb 2023
Prime 2- Sept 2023
Prime 3- June 2024
Prime 4- Feb 2025

Hopefully we get a tease by the Spring 2024 direct.

Yeah, Mario Direct proves Christopher Dring was right that they pulled out of E3 because of a lack of games this year.

It's also really the nail in the coffin for Pokemon Stars doubters.

Last year, we had a Splatoon 3 Direct the month before the September Direct. This means nothing.

Personally I wonder if Nintendo chose to do a Mario Direct because of the search for the Loch Ness monster heating up. Can't be a coincidence they almost completely dropped Plessie for a decade and now this happens.

If you think about it, the Mario Direct announcement makes all the more sense right now in the context of Nintendo firing Charles Martinet. Martinet's work as Viggoro in Skies of Arcadia really doesn't hold up in the light of the metoo movement and Nintendo are right to distance themselves from that work.

Personally I'm glad Miyamoto scuppered the Skies of Arcadia sequel back in the day so that we could get this Mario Direct and be free of Martinet's reign of terror.

Dring was already proven wrong when they announced Wonder.
I'm doing a bit about the crank takes that always crop up when Nintendo surprise people

No Directs the rest of the year. Directs are in a death spiral.

You'll get 2 Directs a year and you'll like it.

If I'm wrong someone quote this post and laugh at me.
*being proven right intensifies"

If there's a General Direct on the 13th I'll eat my shoe. To me this Wonder Direct feels getting marketing for the few remaining 2023 titles out of the way so they don't have to have a General Direct.

Dring was absolutely correct, and it is why Edge are the most reputable publication in the industry.

I think it's poetic that 2D Mario and WarioWare, two series that launched during the twilight years of the Wii U, are being handed the torch to keep the ship steady in the twilight years of the Switch. Two old veterans now gracefully taking on the role as stopgap-ware.

Sorry I don't watch C-tier directs.
They're probably putting their C-tier recording crew at work for this direct.
I guess no more big directs after TotK

13th makes sense, idk the 6th just seems too soon lol. Like im not ready for it. Also next week being the first of September is more settling into the fall, and ill be pretty busy at work probably. So the 13th is great!!

This actually make more convinced of my prediction for opener FE4 remake and Prime 4 last game for September direct

A true reveal of the Princess Peach game in the middle

They do game specific directs a lot. This isn’t new. They did a Splatoon direct last year august and had the September direct.

honestly it's for the best, you know people would complain if it even showed up for 5 seconds in a general for "Wasting time"

Let’s hope. Prime 2 and Prime 4 to end the direct. Maybe they’ll spend a couple of minutes on Splatoon’s Side Order dlc. A new trailer for Mario RPG.

Nintendo curveballs are the best and worst thing in Direct threads; even though numerous people were predicting Wonder previews a full Direct for the game wasn't really predicted.

No no no Dark Cloud you don't get it

Everything is proof the cranks are right. Everything.

There definitely won't be a September Direct this year, says increasingly nervous poster for the sixth time since 2017.
yeah I don't understand people betting against the most sure fire thing from Nintendo marketing machine.
Every year it feels like we go through this song and dance. Doesn't help that this is mixed in with some weird disdain towards Super Mario Wonder.

'Sure fire' doesn't really work any more with the Nintendo of modern times, who have only become more and more news adverse in recent years. I have to say its pretty funny though, after days of basically everyone shooting down the idea that anything other Super Mario Wonder would be a lock for this Direct (especially fun stuff like F-Zero GX/MP4), those same people are now acting surprised that—with SMW now out of the picture—we are now questioning what else could possibly even show up in a September Direct and, thus, whether there even is one at all?

Like I said, a DLC direct, with a Gamecube port at the end (MP2), seems like a reasonable prediction for late September.

Funny thing is that Mario Wonder will still appear in the September direct with a new trailer. And we'll get a new trailer for Mario RPG. And then possibly more info on the Peach game. Alongside new first and third party announcements.

Also important to note we still have the beginning of 2024 (jan - march) relatively empty so I'm expecting at least something there, either already announced or not.

Really this dedicated direct really doesn't inform us one way or another about the content of the September direct unless you come in with a preconceived bias.

Well they can just do a little 15 min Direct for SMRPG in late October. It's a remake at the end of the day. It's not like its an unknown entity that needs a big blowout of coverage.

There will be a black hole of news wrt next year due to the upcoming Switch successor.

you in March:

Exactly, and because they are no longer attached to E3, and because modern Nintendo are very news adverse, we're not going to get June directs any more :)

you in March:

And a few posts later.

Oh I mean, yeah, I'm sure mini directs, partner directs and indie directs will still fight the good fight. However, going forward, I suspect February and September are going to be the only months we see general directs.

Remember, modern Nintendo is very news adverse. A good axiom is that they will hold as few presentations as possible.

The fact we got a skeleton-crew Direct in June now has me think we're getting something smaller, such as a DLC Direct, in September.

All joking aside, I’m super thrilled about the Mario Wonder Direct. With the possible exception of Splatoon 3, this is my most anticipated release since Smash Ultimate, and I’m excited Nintendo seems to have so much to show that they need a dedicated presentation just for this game. I’m ready to be blown away.

On a somewhat related note, I think it’s funny how I built my schedule for this semester around possible times for a general Direct, completely neglecting to take into account the possibility of Nintendo showing off Wonder outside of a general Direct. At least my job isn’t super high-concentration so I can watch it live during my shift 😅

No no no

Getting something repeatedly wrong doesn't mean you can't repost the exact same idea ad infinitum and it certainly doesn't mean you're wrong.

See! The general Direct we got actually wasn't a general Direct. That makes perfect sense.

There will be a September direct. There will also be February, June and September Directs next year (unless Feb or June is the hardware reveal, in which case it'll be a general direct with ten minutes of people playing the succ at a rooftop party squeezed in the middle).

I think the best thing about an incoming Mario Direct is that it's proof Nintendo want to talk about it and have some new stuff to share. The discourse didn't need to be any more complex than that.

It looks like the return of Weird Mario in 2D form, which is exactly what I wanted.

...Wouldn't that still be a general? We've had DLC focused direct with small smaterrings of upcoming games in the past and those have been labeled as a general before.
