2023 ain't over yet either.
That's the spirit!!

I don't see how decent sticks and shoulder buttons could work in a clam shell, but I definitely see the case for a Switch Mini.
Comparing to entry phones with comparable specs, some of which are $100-120, Nintendo could make a decent revision with modern tech for $149 with a healthy profit margin. It would bring new customers, specially in emergent markets.

But for a Switch 2, I'd prefer that they go bigger and higher in everything.
The device has to hold up for the next decade.
I don’t really see the point in making this model nor why they would go that low. Lite was already thin on margins so I imagine 200$ is probably where they wanna stay for any “cheap” model.

Famiboards immediately declares that they are now on Team 2025.
Bro I am way ahead of you.

They’d probably have to resort to sticks more similar to the 3DS kind and delegate L3/R3/LeftStick3/RightStick3 go separate buttons next to it or on the back like back paddles.

Shoulder buttons as we’ve seen with these off the shelf PCs, isn’t much of an issue unless Nintendo does something really custom.

At least for base Switch, Nintendo has gone for frame rate parity between modes. Since modes beyond the standard aren't... well, standard for TVs yet, it starts getting a bit awkward if you dock your game and the frame rate drops from 40 to 30.
Mm, if it supports 120Hz and has HDMI 2.0, they can, in theory, do a VRR at a fixed rate.

120Hz support isn’t too uncommon… right?

.

OLED doesn’t allow VRR? Or just that such a screen would be notably more expensive? Asking cause my TV is OLED and was 99% positive it had VRR
OLED TVs can have VRR, like the LG CX. OLED phones have a set preset for VRR, like the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

OLED on mobile at below 1080p doesn’t have VRR, and the ones that do are custom and cannot do VRR in a freely adaptive and variable way like TVs do. They have refresh rates of 10, 12, 24, 30, 40, 48, 50, 60, 75, 90 and 120Hz. I think some do lower than 10 but that’s all I know.

An LCD display, if custom, can have VRR as I mentioned with the Steam Deck which valve would control.

And like I also mentioned, it would be based on what Nintendo wants and if they feel like it’s worth it even if people are aware of it or not.

Yes, OLED displays can absolutely support VRR. With that said!

I don't actually expect NG Switch to use it myself. HDMI 2.1 might be just a touch out of the ballpark for them. 2.0b features like ALLM and 12 bit HDR are definitely a possibility, though.
Why would that be out of the ballpark for them? It’s not releasing until like late next year, and it’s the Dock that has the HDMI port.

They aren’t using the OLED dock for a tablet that will be bigger

Even being able to target 40, 48 or 50fps without full VRR would be a substantial win over 30 and I'd be more than happy to settle for that.

Just made this (unrealistic) rough mockup of how I think DS play could work on a NSW successor while maintaining portability, don't take this much seriously. With it resting inside the console's back and being able to be taken out easily.

In BC mode, being able to hide the second screen can help the player not get distracted by a second screen that's not being used (as NSW1 games haven't been made with dual screen play in mind). Now, how it could be made without making the console significantly bulkier than the first gen NSW?

Without real knowledge on the matter, I think with the SoC using TSMC 4N as is heavily rumored, it could help to make the console, without a secondary screen, possibly slimmer than a Switch 1, making the addition of a secondary screen, which probably wouldn't have the same amount of components, be much less of a problem for portability.

Edit: Here's something similar to what I suggested with that hinge (0:21-0:25):

I remember being impressed with foldable screens but then I realized wear and tear takes hold.
there is literally physically no way in which a foldable screen can be immune to folding

like people with cash to burn decided they wanted to spend money on worse design because this shit is fundamentally disposable to them

I hate foldable screens and hate everything they stand for

slightly neat? sure, whatever, but the core principle cannot escape its own disdain

if Nintendo makes a console with a foldable screen, it’s a fuck you, plain and simple

To quote Marge Simpson:

I just think they're neat.

They try yes, but it seems to me that they’re more worried about flashy video sequences and trying to sell to west audiences following current trends (trying to be GOT for example) instead of evolving its own identity. It’s something very subjective and personal but since Sakaguchi left, the series is changing to worse. Not being a fan of Nomura‘s general direction, and the latest changes in fundamental gameplay doesn’t help I suppose.
Well, they do care a lot about plot which is good still. The flashy video sequences have been a series staple since the SNES I believe, they've just gotten better looking and more expensive to make. The current trends are indeed kind of an issue but they're not completely ignorant about them, they understand them to some degree and help their stories somehow.

Now, the gameplay changes are something I probably don't want to discuss since the subjectivity on that front is a bit too high.

Yeah I mean compare that to the WiiU where you can say that it is a stupid concept and all that. But I would rather take a console who isn‘t immune to somehow attract more dust than anything but at least I don‘t have to fear too much when just using it regularly.

If 16 GB is not happening, im hoping for 12GB. Or better yet 12GB of faster RAM with the OS shunted off to a 2GB module, so all 12 could be for games.

if not 16 then 12 is pretty confirmed now, how much will be reserved for the system depends, switch 1 only reserved 512mb ram for the system, people are speculating that switch 2 will have a new system

16 GB always seemed super unlikely. Hope Nintendo went with 12GB or enough devs pressure nintendo into going with 16GB late

I think there was already a conversation here that 8 and 10 is not possible due to the availability of RAM modules. and 128 memory-bus, 12GB is great
I know, no trusted source has given a number yet though so I'm not gonna say 12 is just happening.

Do we think we'll see a similar cadence for hardware revisions for the Switch 2? That is, a Lite revision two years into the system's life, and a more premium version (OLED) four years in? Or would Nintendo struggle a bit to get a Lite out the door in that timeframe?

They have been doing that since the GBA era, so yes, expect the same thing again.

Probably more variants than what the Switch received. I feel like the pandemic completely messed up any plans Nintendo had for a Pro version of the system.

yes, expect a Switch sucessor Lite, Switch sucessor OLED, 2/4 years after the console launch, every Nintendo console have model/revisions and i dont expect Nintendo to change it with it next hardware

Hmmm… 8-inch screen would be the same as an Amazon Fire HD8 tablet, which has roughly 1cm bezels around it. With controls added to it, it would feel like a slimmer Wii U GamePad. In a wallet case, the tablet would be similar to carrying an A5 journal, for an idea of how portable it is.

What we had in the end was infinitely better, and I liked that demo at the time. But ultimately, I feel that had they gone with that demo’s direction, we would’ve had more of the same, but bigger and more of it, and that would’ve been disappointing. “Realistic” LOZ would look awful, indistinguishable from other games, and devoid of imagination, unless the equivalent of a live-action horror film is your thing. What would a realistic Goron, Rito, or Zora look like? Or Wizzrobes and Redeads? Rejecting photorealistic art direction is imperative, so much that it’s one of the staples of the series, and the LOZ team has no desire to imitate the real world - We went from cel-shading to Impressionism to a blend of gouache paintings and Studio Ghibli-inspired presentation. They might well stick with this direction, but change the appearance, use different colour shades and combinations from their palette, and create new areas, maps, etc..
realitic art style dont work with the Legend of Zelda franchise, Twilight Princess art style aged horribly compared to other art styles of the franchise.

I hope they do GameCube but I doubt it, they are already super stingy with online (imo)
They're stingy because they need to stretch content to the end of the switch's lifespan. They would need something to entice people to keep subscribing on an all new platform which means new offers. At least that's how I see it

I disagree, there's hundreds of games for them to offer they choose not to. Making gba expansion+ online especially goes to show

Yeah, I was asking more about if we think the timing will stay the same, rather than if revisions will happen in general. But I guess we'd have to know what the final hardware even is before we can speculate on how they'd be able to cut things down to a more budget-price for a Lite, and if they'd figure out how to do that in two years or three (or, hell, just one). But for fun, revision timing for all Nintendo handhelds:

Game Boy
  • Game Boy -1989
  • Game Boy Pocket - 1996
  • Game Boy Color (and Light) - 1998
Game Boy Advance
  • Game Boy Advance - 2001
  • Game Boy Advance SP - 2003
  • Game Boy Advance Micro (and backlight SP) - 2005
Nintendo DS
  • Nintendo DS - 2004
  • Nintendo DS Lite - 2006
  • Nintendo DSi - 2008
  • Nintendo DSi XL - 2009
Nintendo 3DS
  • Nintendo 3DS - 2011
  • Nintendo 3DS XL - 2012
  • Nintendo 2DS - 2013
  • New Nintendo 3DS (and n3DS XL) - 2014/2015
  • New Nintendo 2DS XL - 2017
I forgot that the 3DS had three revisions just churned out, one year after another. I don't see us getting anything quite like that again.

Probably more variants than what the Switch received. I feel like the pandemic completely messed up any plans Nintendo had for a Pro version of the system.
Didn't the OLED replace the Pro? Would we have ended up with both?

How do we think they start sweetening the deal for their online service when the next system hits? Indies? Gamecube ports? More of the same?
Maybe additional discounts on select titles during sales? An indie program where you get 2-3 indie titles a month that you can play as long as you stay subbed, similar to PS+ free games, would be cool and would absolutely keep me subbed.

Won't happen, but something similar to the PS+ or Game Pass catalogs would be really neat too.

Twilight Princess was just polygon-starved if you ask me. That and a more unified lighting system would work wonders

It's 811 MB for the OS, plus a 96 MB video capture buffer if the game enables it. The next console will use the same underlying OS, and while they may add new features and increase the memory footprint, I personally don't think it will be by very much.

GameCube, maybe? I feel like there's enough in the GCN library that Nintendo wouldn't feel is worth remaking, but would be willing to dump on NSO (or whatever it will be renamed to -- Nintendo System Online?). Maybe another Sega console if we're lucky?

Gamecube ports will be released over a steady cadence over the next couple years like they have been. I like the new trend of "Shadowdrop a gamecube game and release it physically a little while later". They can keep doing that every so often and get the Gamecube's library out

DS seems likley as the next system addition. You cant really ask people to pay $30-$40 for a DS game like you can with Gamecube/Wii, and you cant really remaster them without remaking them from the ground up. NSO is the perfect place for it. Handling the dual screen and touch screen gonna take some finicking, but they're not insurmountable obstacles. Wii and 3DS can get standalone retail releases.

And if they announce Mainline Pokemon.... then it's checkmate. They'll never have to worry about needing to attract subs or keep them on after that. Just roll out a steady cadence of adding a generation every couple months, and they'll be minting.
