StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

Hey folks, NintendoPrime was showing hidden comments from this thread on his YouTube channel and has been permanently banned from Famiboards as a result. Please be aware that it is absolutely not acceptable to share information shared here confidentially.
He's also a racist, so clearly his ban is a good thing.

Well that's unfortunate. No ill will to NintendoPrime but folks should respect confidentiality.

Though I guess to keep from derailing further: with the idea of Nintendo Accounts having a smooth transition into a next generation device, what kind of enhancements do you think might be offered in Drake? Will newer platforms like Gamecube potentially be added to NSO?

watch Nintendo go with 8GB LPDDR5 and 64GB emmc

I mean, there's just no way, right? This is a device that is presumably intended to serve as Nintendo's core platform until 2030 or 2031. There's no way a device with 7 GB of RAM available to devs is going to make it that far without being extremely limiting.

We're already hearing plenty of complaints and issues with devs feeling constrained with ~8.3 GB of RAM on the Series S - and that's with a 2.5 GB/s drive and advanced memory saving techniques like SFS.

This would be like the PS4 launching with 4 GB of RAM in 2013.

Thank goodness. When he did his summary of events some pages back I knew he was going to make a YouTube video on. It.

SD cards aren't that far off from nvme drives in the steam deck. just further justification for sticking with SD cards

Game assets are compressed, and without dedicated hardware to decompress them, the job falls to the CPU. In SD's case, a 4-core CPU that is unlikely to process that decompression faster than data being read in, hence the bottleneck isn't the storage, and why two vastly different storage mediums in speed look to perform relatively close.

In case you needed to expire his access and didn’t have per user controls. I just noticed for some reason I wasn’t logged in when I opened my browser again. Didn’t clear any caching, but must have been some other β€˜me’ problem.
Ah I get ya. No, getting banned immediately changes the specific account's permissions.

Which damn near happened.

Nah. They should not (but they probably will).

A 1TB M.2 SSD is cheaper than a microSD of the same capacity, but faster.
Size, heat and energy consumption are concerns for M.2 when compared to MicroSD. Specially for a portable machine like Switch.

Feet is mostly joking. Going with 8GB RAM and 64 eMMC would be suicide for a machine meant to last until 2030's. Specially, as you said, devs already complain about Series S RAM amount and the lack of sufficient RAM was one of the biggest complaints of developers regarding Switch. I think expectations of 12GB of RAM and 128GB Storage are more than fine.
Who's this necro guy? he was a twiiter account?

to clarify, team 20 is much more fun because if there’s an announcement on, say, 7/20… i win

if it comes out 5/20/2025 i win

if the presentation is on whatever the fuck tuesday and is 20 minutes long… i win

hell, if it’s 3 minutes and 20 seconds, i win

i could win with a mere β€œ2023” or β€œ2024” but like, as a member of #Team20, that’d be a bullshit win and i wouldn’t really enjoy it

you know?

so i’m staunchly #Team20

You described it as a bullshit win but I say, you already won because Nintendo said so themselves
everything after this is just more W's

Hmm, this is a good move. As the rumor mills continue to go along people like him will report on this information and then go "oh, but I thought it was ok?" when it's pretty obvious why hidden content tags exist.

Rubs me the wrong way. Anyway, onward for the next gen Switch speculation!

But the thing has to cost maximum $400

How would such a thing fit into a Switch? Not to mention how it might be extended by the consumer? They sure as hell aren’t going to ask owners to crack open the system.
it totally can fit in the switch and be user replacable. there's a tablet that does this already (one of the Surface tablets)

here's a 1TB for $110

don’t SSDs run super hot in comparison? so cooling would be a big issue
I assume NIntendo can really hobble the speed to get lower power usage out of it

I mean, there almost was a 4GB PS4. I don't think 8GB will happen though. there are 8GB LPDDR5/X phones and stuff, but for larger bus sizes, they aren't popular. they weren't even a thing until recently as LPDDR5 launched with 6GB chips instead of 4GB and 2GB as far as I know

and the succdacted will, in time, have these games:
  • Super Mario Heresy
  • Metroid Angst
  • Yoshi’s Ancient Island
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link Apart
  • Animal Crossing: Suburb Slide
  • Donkey Kong’s Banana Blaster
  • Star Fox Abyss
  • Kirby’s Remembered World
and of course… Super Mario Bros. Twoder

Isn't the SSD in the Steam Deck kind of useless because fast SSDs are really power hungry so the Steam Deck can't actually use any of the speed.

Obviously UFS 4.0 is needed for Switch 2 (half ironic) as the Switch 2 could then stream assets at 500 MB/s or 1 GB/s while not using that much electricity.

YT poachers just see this forum as a well of content. No doubt he'll be back on an alt unfort.

I believe the Deck is also CPU limited.

My stance has changed on this. I don't think GameCube will be added to NSO like the apps currently exist, but I think GCN and Wii titles will see more and more "quick and dirty" ports like Pikmin 1+2, and that these will be added to NSO+Expansion Pack around the launch of Next Gen.

This approach gets around issues like adapting controls and large download sizes, while people who want to "buy to own" still can.

I think DS is the final NSO app, probably next year, with additions after that being Wii and GCN remasters, then early Switch games, transitioning into a "Game Pass for Nintendo".

They can't keep adding consoles forever, because eventually they'd catch up to current gen and reinvent Game Pass anyway. I think that'll start with GCN titles. Also gives them a place to put the already ready Mario Galaxy HD and Sunshine HD ports back on sale, along with games like Twilight Princess and Windwaker HD, and the already-ready-but-never-released New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

My new feature prediction for NSO next gen would be "remote play together", giving games on Nintendo Switch with limited or no Online full Online support, just as the NSO apps do for their games, but at a system level for all games.

Gen 3 is cheaper. No need for gen 4.

Honestly I like the sound of some of those.

Suburb Slide especially. A city-focussed AC is my dream game.

also was the nx2 thing confirmed real or fake? Sorry if I'm just asking something obvious
It never has anything reliable suggesting it could have been real, the burden of proof needs to be on the rumor itself at first to give us anything at all to give it any validity.

Minimum Expectations:
  • All the features NSO currently has
  • Increased maximum number of videos that can be saved (currently there is a 1000 video limit even when there's more space available)
  • Some actual music on the e-shop channel and NSO channel
  • E-shop reworked to something that doesn't constantly stutter and lag
  • Friend messaging feature through the phone app

Hopeful Expectations:
  • Messaging System on console
  • Achievement System
  • 3DS/DS NSO
  • Return of 3DS style Themes

Pipe-dream expectations:
  • Return of Miiverse
  • Web Browser
  • Gamecube/Wii NSO
  • PC Engine NSO
  • Return of Virtual Console purchasing options

do you folks see nintendo sticking to sd cards for expandable storage, or will they go with something like the steam deck? expanding storage via opening up the back seems very un-nintendo like
Steam Deck uses SD cards and also officially isn't supposed to be opened to change the other storage, even though it happens.

Honestly I like the sound of some of those.

Suburb Slide especially. A city-focussed AC is my dream game.
but the suburbs aren’t the city!!

signed a staunch city-liver haunted by the suburbs

like we’re talking the difference between Animal Crossing White Boy Ska and Animal Crossing Fruit Market Mutual Aid

Honestly the fact that there isn't a single game (that I know of) that will refuse to run from SD card (on Deck or otherwise) really says to me that while faster might be nice, it's not in the slightest bit needed.
