StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

After going through a Switch v1, OLED, Steam Deck, and my Samsung Galaxy S20+ for the occasional games... I am perfectly content with native 720p. 1080p would be nice for sure, but them sticking to 720p wouldn't be upsetting to me.

Moving away from an OLED screen WOULD be upsetting, on the other hand...
I'm willing to do an avatar bet that it'll be LCD and they'll sell a new OLED later on in the successor's lifecycle. Nothing wrong that though, a good LCD is fine for me, never understood the screen tech "I'll never go back" mentality (speaking as someone who is a self-proclaimed screen tech hobbyist lol). Nintendo have "downgraded" (I quote it because I disagree with the use of the term but it's what people say) plenty of times before. Like:
-the Game Boy Light in Japan having a backlight, then removing it again until the GBA SP AGS 101
-no XL version of 3DS on launch, despite having launched a DSi XL
-base DSi having a bigger bottom screen than the 3DS

I know people'll quote this and rationalise why I'm totally wrong and xyz, but regardless I'm pretty sure OLED won't be available at successor launch, and most people won't care as the marketing will override whatever they claimed before.

Bear in mind that by default, Switch OLED's have the "vivid colors" setting enabled which adds even more saturation to make the colors pop (and probably lose some details/nuances in some cases).
I'll always have a grudge against Nintendo for doing this and "dupe" consumers and early hardware reviews.
It's not as if the screen wasn't great by itself; the colors already pop in standard mode and you can definitely notice the improvements over the standard Switch screen without forcing it.
My point is that while OLED is definitely better, the actual comparison should be made with this setting disabled (and it's just better to leave it off for better accuracy imo) and the Switch LCD screen isn't that bad to be honest - at least on non-Lite models.
Yeah most OLED devices have Vivid image setting on by default since they know very saturated images are what consumers seem to prefer, I think it must be linked to brain psychology in that bright colors are somehow appealing and lead to more engagement to some monkey part of our brain. Hence why black and white settings are recommended for those trying to spend less time on their phones, since it makes it less engaging to your brain. In short, manufacturers are trying to make people more likely to part with their money by being a tad disingenuous.

It is what it is. Switch LCD is good enough, never understood the hate. Sure it's not the absolute, absolute best but we're here to play games, not play the screen lmao. Nice screens are a nice little cherry on top but not the main course or main reason for me engaging with video games, nor does a lack of one make me not want to play a game.

Good point. It would also coincide with when they usually guve their e3 Direct
And I thought you made good points ...
seeing as how they’ve always done e3 Directs on the 11th or 12th and always a Tuesday

... I almost edited my reply right after I posted it, and saw yours! They'll definitely want to be the last, and the next Tuesdays are the 13th (so clear) or the 20th. Personally I think they'll go late, as last year they seemed to act like they were deliberately yanking their fans tails

I really found it weird that the “leaker” wouldn’t name Nintendo’s digital event as a Direct. Maybe we’ll really get a hardware reveal via a digital event, much like Apple’s keynote address. But… when?

Seeing the replies about the digital events scheduled, I think Nintendo could go the week Capcom’s event is on, seeing as how they’ve always done e3 Directs on the 11th or 12th and always a Tuesday. Maybe they’ll announce Monday evening and stream Tuesday?
im bracing myself for the "digital event" to turn out to be these twitter drops

The only logical reasons I can think of are:

This holiday has nothing of value. Pure filler. They're going to let Nintendo Switch rot without so much as a major holiday title.

They're making room to reveal, market and release their new console.

Now option 2 makes a lot more business sense, so I think it's more likely.

Option 1 I think is possible but probably only happens if Option 2 was delayed internally.
3 - They've got stuff, but it's not a lot, and a Summer Direct would spend all the gas in the tank.

Nintendo has goosed Directs with announcements a year+ in the future (Splatoon 3), but that's not an option if you're holding those titles for your launch announcement for new hardware.

Nintendo could build a Direct around Zelda DLC/Pokemon DLC/Mario Kart Booster Course/Holiday title - but it would leave very little to do in September. Instead they could do what they've done for a couple of years in the Switch lifetime, which is spend summer doing Twitter drops and partner announcements. They can hide their stinkers (Horse Game), and put a spotlight on mid-tier sellers (Pikmin).

Then in September they could do a traditional Direct. Put release windows on all those undated Level 5 games from February (Decapolice, Layton, Fantasy Life). Put Prime 4 in Dread's October slot. DonkEPD in the Holiday slot. Fire Emblem remake in January. Shadow drop final Mario Kart wave, with a bunch of new characters (bring back all the Kongs to cross promote the DK game?).

February Direct gets replaced with a REDACTED announcement, Summer gets the blowout, Holiday launch with Mario. And in the interim, Nintendo drip feeds the half-dozen remakes that we keep hearing about - F-Zero, Twilight Princess, Wind Waker, Thousand Year Door, Prime 2+3 - as budget titles/collections in order to guarantee decent software sales that don't pull from REDACTED marketing.

and risk the precious holiday sales for Switcht, no way Nintendo will anounce it next hardware this month/year, beside, Shuntaro Furukawa made it very clear no new hardware is factored on the 15 milions hardware they aim to sell this fiscal year
That was a misreport by multiple outlets. That forecast is likely to be revised, anyway, just like last year.

But hardware reveals are pretty much never made during Directs right?
Typically not, but there's not much precedent to work with, and one counter example.

Chances are reasonably high that the actual hardware announcement would be standalone and come before the Direct (or some weirder scenarios, depending on how they want to message it), but it could go either way.

15m not including new hardware was what was originally reported (but not included in the official releases, tbf). it got twisted by some news outlets as meaning that no new hardware would release at all.

I should also stress (once again) that Furukawa has yet to deny that new hardware is coming like he has done so in the past, sooooooooo........👀

Option 1 lines up with their hardware forecasting, their revival of the vouchers, and the rumours of lots of ports and remasters/remakes coming.

this might seem more attack-y than intended...but this is how my reply formed in my broken brain

Also, insert your own <Oprah: "you get a Special Edition OLED!" meme> here.

lmaoo that would be veeery underwhelming

This sounds like what could definitely happen :<

Announcement timing in mid June would be a bit strange. None of the new games shown at the upcoming summer events will include Drake and then, after all events are over, Nintendo will announce new hardware?

Hey everyone,

I was wondering what the consensus is on this infamous 4chan leak of the Switch 2:
Fp_B00_aQAEUPDi

For those of us out of the loop, before the Pokemon Presents presentation in February of this year a 4chan leak surfaced (see the above picture) currently stating lots of details about the presentation, many of which would be very hard to fake, especially the Japanese names which are accurate. The most interesting part about this leak however is what wasn't in the presentation.

As you can see in the picture, the anonymous poster describes a new model for the Nintendo Switch (presumably a Switch pro or Switch 2), which will host a 'graphics enhancement patch' for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, releasing alongside the second wave of DLC (The Indigo Disk, releasing in Winter of 2023 which extends until March 2024).

If this right we can assume 2 things:

1. A new Nintendo Switch will release in Winter of 2023, with better graphics than the original models
2. Existing Switch games wil recieve patches that will improve the graphics on this new system

So, now that the dust has settled on this leak i wanted to know what the consensus is: Real or fake?

I think it could be real if we take into consideration that:

"All those games on next gen consoles? [montage of trailers] Day one, on Super Nintendo Switch. Play Anything. Anywhere. With Anyone. Welcome to Super Nintendo Switch."

Companies keeping a lid on it so Nintendo can do the big blowout makes sense, while a week of "not coming to Switch" before Koizumi walks into frame, snaps his fingers and tells everyone they're coming to Super Switch, would absolutely blow socks off.

I'm not betting on it, but if their presentation is after the others, that's very possible.

Oh yeah, I would be fine with an LCD even if I'd probably loudly complain. But OLEDs are such a massive jump, it justified the OLED model for me. The Vita also proved that with how nice that screen is.

A part of me believes that is merely a troll mixed in with real information. I'd love to believe, but that's where I'm sitting at.

Someone hold me back before I start winter discourse again. They wouldn't advertise Winter 2023 if they meant 2024! That's not how this works!!!
Hey, chill out. It's late spring all over the northern hemisphere right now, with no exceptions. Let's just all relax and have a nice time before the summer starts later this month, as we all agree, with no dissent or cultural specificity worth mentioning.

Edit: OK, the joke doesn't actually work because it's now meteorological summer by all accounts I'm aware of right now (north of the equator). But I had to.

It's plausible, but there's no conclusive evidence for or against. They definitely had access to some information, but it's hard to tell how much without the events playing out.
Coincidentally, Scarlet/Violet 60fps models are ready. It could just be a case of GameFreak future proofing their assets. But there’s that as well
The assets are used in more than just mainline Pokémon games. There are already cases of the previous model set animating at 60fps. Possibly even the current one if New Snap was the first game to use them as I suspect.

As long we're not giving each other a hard time, my native language has a single word for the beginning of summer and May. Where I am, we're on week 6 of summer.

Does any user know about this hash?

So uh..... I've been around the Direct speculation thread and apparently, Jeff Grub is hearing rumblings of something going on with Nintendo in July (through his podcast) and along with the supposed rumor of a digital event (not a Direct) happening soon, it got me thinking: what if that "something" is a digital event for [REDACTED] with the big reveal happening this month? That would leave enough room for a Pikmin 4 Direct, too. Depending on when this hypothetical reveal would happen, Summer Geoff Games Fest could announce some games for it. Then you have to factor in the upcoming shareholders meeting this month and we still don't know what's coming out after Pikmin 4. Suffice to say, I think we're in the final stretch, I may be stretching myself, but I'm still confident!

Does any user know about this hash?
That particular user came back, with the plaintext as verification, and posted some follow up information. The only real relevant nugget was that the Special Terastal appearance is linked to a new mechanic. Which is pretty safe as bets go, but if it doesn't appear, then at least it disconfirms.

Considering the timing, and the information that was leaked, I think it's most likely someone got access to the Presents early, and added the Switch 2 stuff themselves, rather than it being legit, but who knows

I think it's someone who got early access to the Pokemon Presents marketing info, and mixed real information with stuff that they made up / predictions for the lols.

Doesn't mean that the made up bits will turn out to be incorrect - they could be coincidentally right - but I don't put as much weight on this particular rumour as others do.

Forgive me for saying this.

But that sounds likely, yes.

You can get the tablet only on ebay for less than $250, just reuse your joycons and dock. If you're a handheld gamer, and you can make it work financially, it's worth it. Not only is the battery life upgrade from V1 worth it, but the screen really is excellent, and the build quality is much nicer around.
By the way, I know that this suggestion was weeks ago, but I finally took the plunge even though I'm still Team 2023, and my second hand OLED tablet is arriving today. You can all thank me when Nintendo announce the Switch 2 in the next couple of weeks, lol.

So Grubb is hearing something from Nintendo in July…

Switch Lite was announced July 10, 2019.
Switch OLED was announced July 6, 2021. ~2 years later.
Switch 2 [fill in the blank]…

🙂

edit: those were the wednesday and tuesday of July’s second week. ergo, Switch 2 announcement will be July 11-12. 😉

Most realistic prediction I have seen today imo

What's that?
Riding out the Switch's life, while hardware and software sales continue to decline, with games that will do little to drive those sales. This is something that Nintendo has struggled with with even their most successful systems, I can't fathom them doing it again when they only have one platform now.

Well with Gamescom being a thing with Nintendo after a long while; this could make all sense. Though it would be weird tho if the new Switch would potentially be playable there as a first.

Though it could also just be a Mini Direct or Partner Direct. Anyway lets see what the coming days will do :D.

While I hope it’s true that the supposed “digital event” is Nintendo announcing the Switch 2 with a slew of games, it could also easily be a Super Mario Bros Switch Oled model while announcing new games

I mean the funny thing about option 3 is that it doesn't read like Nintendo riding out the Switch's life at all. MP4? The new Donkey Kong? Those are heavy hitters.

The actual difference boils down to the question of which is more likely before the year is out: Nintendo has a bunch of games (a mix of fan desired ports and major new releases) which it can announce and ship with relatively little turnaround, or they have a console they're gonna announce and ship with relatively little turnaround.

Idk.

if there's a presentation in July, it's definitely for hardware of some kind, though it's important to remember that Grubb's also said he's heard rumors that the Switch 2 gets revealed late in the year (and tbf he said he wasn't able to verify that at the time). Maybe they're finally announcing Calcio? "We know Switch is too long in the tooth and a good this damaged will be a tough sell, so let's just put it out as a last hurrah for the Switch" or something to that effect

Ah, sorry. I was referring to 2024. Even then, I don't expect Prime 4 and DK to move that many Switches without something like Mario headlining them.

Late in the year would be October-December. So an October reveal for a March release is possible

June could be the last Direct for Switch and July is the beginning of the Successor marketing cycle

No matter how much it's discussed ITT, there's nothing capable of making me believe that they're skipping BF/Christmas and launching drake in March.
WiiU -> Switch was a completely different deal. They either go for June~Oct. Announcement for a launch in November or, they hold it until late 2024.

I swear, I saw Nintendo posting Mario behind curtains on twitter in my dreams.
