StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

Even though I don't see this thing launching this year, you don't need an extended marketing cycle to launch a new console. As long as you have software available to show for launch to the first 3 months, 6ish months is more tham adequate.

All they have to do is reveal the console, reveal games and reveal services. What exactly about that necessitates 12 months of time?

This thread is on Facebook? Ew, uncool.
Imagine this thread in Meta VR 💀

Nothing. If the Switch managed just fine with a five month marketing cycle after the Wii U fiasco, the Successor can manage with equal or less. And if Nintendo originally intended to unveil the 3DS a Summer with a Holiday release, they can do the same with the Drake.

What we cab expect is something big this Summer. Software-wise. Whether or not that big software reveal comes with a hardware unveil, whose to know. But one can infer based in the fact that we’ve reached traditional Nintendo lifecycle and there’s no first party software lineup for the second half of this year.

Who said anything about 'remastered'? If you buy a PC game on your old PC and it runs a solid 1080p 30, and then you buy a new PC and that same game runs at 4K 60, it's not been 'remastered'. It just runs better.

It would be shocking if the next system is actually a Switch 2 and doesn't run select old games better. We don't really have examples of previous generations where consoles could have run backwards compatible games better, so there's little precedent either way. Wii used GCN hardware for emulation, I think Wii U was the same (?), and it's kind of pointless to look further back than that. New 3DS did run some 3DS games better I think - that might be it?

I'm thinking the same thing. They'd only be extending the tail of a game like Tears that wouldn't normally benefit from having the entire life of the console to sell. If it's as good of a game as I'm hoping, it'd be an obvious candidate for a soft re-launch with Drake + DLC.

I think it would be a mixture. Some games getting patches and some games getting full on remasters and some games no patches at all.

With Zelda TotK I think we will get a full on remaster. Sony did the same thing with PS5, they remasters Uncharted 4/LL, Ghost of Tsushima, Spiderman while some games they released patches such as Horizon, Last of Us 2, Ratchet, Days Gone, then some games they didn't patch at all such as Bloodborne, Shadow of Collosus, Last Guardian, Gravity Rush etc.

Zelda TotK is perfect for a remaster treatment where it wouldn't just be a resolution or frame rate upgrade, but better textures, better draw distance, maybe even a new dungeon that's exclusive to Switch 2 or a new item that makes you fly/float faster and only Switch 2 can do it due to better texture streaming. Whether this remaster would be paid, or upgrade fee or completely free I don't know but I do think Nintendo will definitely remaster TotK where it's a native Switch 2 game.

The thing is, a lot of that isn't even "remaster" material. High res textures is something they probably have on hand. Maybe even do some neural net upscaling like God of War did. Everything else is just lifting limits put into place and extra DLC like Burning Shores

You can feel the anxiety in Nintendo's comments. "Unprecedented Territory" and "We look for new ways to delight our customers".

More power has never been "just enough" for Nintendo. Now yes, the leak indicates the [Redacted] is an impressive leap over the current Switch, but Nintendo may be struggling on how to introduce the system in a way that encourages customers to purchase the new device, or at the very least continue to purchase software on their current Switch models.

After their struggles with the SNES, N64, Gamecube, and Wii U who can blame them for being concerned. At least with those system launches they had robust handheld devices to bridge sales gaps.

Hear me out: they put a big f'in' 2 on the box

It's simple. It's easy. Consumers understand it.

Yeah, it's antithetical to Nintendo's mojo, and boring, and some people will hate it and say they're selling out and/or they've lost their magic/whimsy/creativity (that and Sony has copyrighted numbering things or something). But if they're adding new stuff they can still emphasize that in their marketing and their games. Having a basic name won't be the end of the world.

On the other hand, I may have only landed on this opinion because it's been a repetitive topic of discussion and I'd rather it be over and done with lol call it Switch Whatevs for all I care

I'd like to see 2 on the box but I don't think it'll be the name.

Squared, as I've been touting, sounds right to me.

As long as it without a doubt implies a better/new/improved product, every name is fine.

Wii U naming failed exactly there.
Nintendo Switch Better
Nintendo Switch Even Better
Nintendo Switch Even Better Still
Nintendo Switch The Best Yet
Nintendo Switch Better Than The Best
Nintendo Switch Best of the Best.

Think this approach to switch generations gets that message across.

What? No "Nintendo Switch Simply the Best" with ad campaigns being lead by the one and only legendary Tina Turner?

I feel like a successor would have a different color. Maybe green or blue, to further differentiate it from the previous gen

The more I‘m thinking about it, I believe they will go with a different word than Switch. Marketed in a similar way though a name that fits the new potential feature(s) of the console. Like Nintendo Flip ("new ways to play"), Nintendo Tune ("Make from now on your own game music, it‘s too expense for us to do a soundtrack for every damn game") or just Nintendo Snitch ("our console can stalk insiders and hackers").
I know Switch 2 should be the obvious choice, but Nintendo does sometimes stuff that no one expect and I‘m sure that will be true for at least some aspects of this new hardware.

Nintendo abandoning the Switch name would be catastrophically stupid.
Yup. The brand represents an install base of over 120million owners. If you wanna transfer people over, slap the Switch name on it and keep it going.

[EDIT]

I just had a brainblast:

The Switch’s successor will be called the Switch 2 because the 2 represents the Switch and an app Nintendo is developing to enable smartphones to be used as streaming devices for multiplayer games

🧐

I was only logged in to check that the loop protocol was respected. I see that everything is going as planned (we are at the name point), I can go back to work.

At the risk of being ridiculed, has anybody here toyed with Judder Reduction on modern TVs? Was testing some settings out on the S95B and I was honestly very surprised at how it impacted content.

I read comments on the topic from 2017/18 mocking it for adding tons of input lag and artifacts, but in the very brief time I toyed with Breath of the Wild actually had me convinced to keep using it.
On my old TV (early 2010s model) I used it a little, but the lag was noticeable. Still a good tradeoff for particularly non-actiony games like Great Ace Attorney with its detailed character animations. On my new TV it straight up disallows motion smoothing for PC input or when in the Game Mode so I hadn't tried it beyond built-in streaming apps.

half hour later But changing picture mode and trying with Xenoblade 3... better than I expected, not nearly as much lag as the old TV. Distortion around moving characters or when changing the camera quickly, but not a bad trade for seeing Xenoblade 3 impossibly smooth.
I believe it’s motion interpolation. Without knowing much more about it, it looks like it’s attempting to create the frames from 30 fps to 60 fps.
Interesting thing to note, it can sometimes improve more than you think. My old TV's specs said 120hz though it only allowed 60fps input max. Last year for whatever reason I had the motion interpolation on while also playing a 60fps PC game and I noticed it was still improving smoothness as I spun around. Seeing that was actually one of the things that convinced me it was worth looking into upgrading to a screen where I could do higher frame rates properly.

Literally calling it the Switch 2 would do wonders fr.

There's an ongoing joke in a Discord I moderate where we're just calling it "The Switch REX" in reference to Xenoblade (with reference to the Monado REX and Rex's glow-up from Xenoblade 2 to 3 Future Redeemed). Unironically that wouldn't be the worst name for the console, but we'll see if they decide to call it the "Nintendo Swap" or something stupid like that.
