StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

Also I’m just gonna say

I don’t think we can rule out that this is fake.

I mean, the evidence is in the pictures themselves: they have a Switch OLED (playing Pokémon) with noticeably customized, printed-art-having Joy-Cons. So it’s not out of the realm of possibility that this person has the equipment to have Joy-Cons printed on. All they’d need to do is print up a box using existing assets and whatever Zelda-like font they can find, and they’re good.
Probably made by Nintendo to surprise everyone with something else

I don't think this is fake, very high quality here. I remember how people doubted the Lite backplate and it was real, just reversed.

For me, the biggest clue to the future of Nintendo is its Twitter banner on the official Japanese account.

https://twitter.com/Nintendo/header_photo

I will go against the recent statements of the DF, the so-called Nvidia leaks, and since they are trying to force a fake news as real, if they focus on the Tegra T239, it would be a SOM or, for the forum, a SoC that is finishing testing in the Today to enter production in factories, some say that the OLED was going to have this chip, if that were the case, it was impossible to launch the OLED in 2021 with a chip that has not yet entered mass production in 2022. In that case, it would be that Nintendo advance a revision without its core that was not ready yet? If we focus on the year 2020, it was a year in which, due to sanitary measures, many facilities were closed for a long time. In the case of video game development, they focused on teleworking to navigate the temporary closures in the offices, but it is possible that the Investigation and development of Nintendo saw its activities suspended almost entirely, since taking a laboratory home is delicate, what this team should have done is the Investigation part, and the development postponed. In the research part, it is normal to test various parts, including various processors, and I think perhaps from various companies.

Anyone who knows business knows that no company limits itself in commercial agreements and even more so when you are the one who buys the parts, so it is not impossible to change the manufacturer of the GPU.

Therefore, the development of the tangible successor console should have been directly affected by the sanitary measures, hence the benefit in sales has allowed Nintendo to conveniently extend the life of Switch. And for me the OLED was always planned as a revision that improves the screen, sound and connectivity. There is something I call the convergence moment that Xbox has already started and that Nintendo may choose to follow soon, and that is the distribution of its software without a tangible Nintendo-branded processing system, in other words the sale of a service with a controller.

So with H1 2023 now dead (assuming the leak is real), I'm guessing this is what happened:

1. A Mariko-based, Pro-style device was cancelled years ago.
2. Drake was pushed back from H1 2023 to a later date (likely Holiday 2023 or 2024).

Nate heard about the latter (H1 2023 no longer happening), saw DF's off hand comments about the former, and jumped to the conclusion that the 2023 device was outright cancelled, largely because he never understood that the device he knew about and Drake had to be the same device.

I might just buy the TotK special edition and turn my launch Switch into a homebrew device, even knowing Drake is still coming. I want to try playing Switch games on PC.
I like this theory, that seems plausible.

That's what I assumed at first with the dock reusing the Triforce crest from the gold 3DS.

Then I saw one of the joy con with a 'Zonai crest' made up of a closed lotus flower and two ancient eye symbols. We haven't seen that crest before that's exactly what I would expect it to look like based off all the imagery and theorizing. If fake, then well done.
I looked at it even more closely, if this is fake this is next level because somebody carefully scrutinized the faded Zonai text on the dragons, went into the trailers to find matches, and then edited the complete text onto the dragons, or at least the bottom dragon, there is too much glare to make out any text on the top dragon.

One thing that is scratching my head is a random Zonai letter that seems to be on the bottom dragon's eye. I think this Oled model is very likely real but I'm not 100% sold on it because of that random, possibly misplaced Zonai letter.

if accidental that's a minor enough mistake to have been made by a professional imo

Still curious about that uncle info re: a different backplate with a cut-out kickstand. I need to dig that up. Sample manufacturing units?

He explicitly said it was likely a sample/prototype run, yeah. Look back at this thread in April, that's when it happened IIRC.

Once you see it' it's hard to unsee though haha. There is one tiny other thing.

I'll be nit-picky here, since people in this thread are detail oriented. The right joy-con circles are more of a grey than white. On the box the circles on the joy-con are definitely white, in the box the circles are grey(er).

Not aiming this post at you Raccoon, but posting since people here are talking about the totk oled, and we're trying to find out if it's real.

Was browsing some old stuff here and saw someone who said that the same uncle who said that Splatoon 3 OLED will be announced (had it right to the exact day) also said that the new hardware unit is currently in production and that was in July 2022.

I don't know if I lost something but don't take my world granted, maybe it was different uncle of whatever lol

That’s a different one.

Summer 2021 really was the best time to buy the OLED Switch. Could've gotten at least a year and a half out of it.

The Muncle, who predicted the Splatoon 3 model, around the same time explicitly speculated that the new switch would start production in September. Never said anything about it being in production in July AFAIK.

btw I’m wondering that if we are getting a true Switch 2 by FY2024/25 it will very probably have a 1080p display? And via BC Switch 1 games will behave in Switch 2 portable mode like Switch 1 docked mode with maxed resolutions.

Buying the OLED Switch is looking like one of my better moves. I actually held back for a month or two when it came out and played Dread on my day 1 model, but eventually I just gave in and bought one. The bigger and better screen is a nice upgrade tbh and it’ll be nice to play TotK on it in May.

our mistake is having hope

Nintendo will always do what makes me specifically saddest
They do what they do. In the other hand, what you feel is what you say to yourself about what they do. Work on that for your sanity.

We are 5 months away to the sequel of the best game of all time. What a time to be alive! Fuck new hardware. When Nintendo is prepared to show they will.

Edit: typos

Some might say this statement is overdramatic, but why am I agreeing with it so much.

For a company that purports to be "listening, too" on their social media, they act weirdly oblivious more often than not

Not a criticism, but I'm chuckling at the thought of somebody at Nintendo who knows exactly what went on and what's still going on, laughing their ass off at being called 'oblivious' by a bunch of amateur internet Columbo's.

2024/2025= switch OG same scenario.
At very least = Q1 of 2024 ie FY 2023

We should be more humble about who we are to them.

We are the die-hard fans. So like 1%? Or less of the fan base. Not to talk about the common people.

If I have learned something about Nintendo forums in the last 15 years is that 99.9% of the time we are wrong about Nintendo predictions. Be hardware or software.
Some things, like how they market stuff, can be very predictable. Like we usually know when a direct is coming because they do follow a trend or cycle of sorts. But determining what game or piece of hardware is coming out really isn't our forte, especially because most of our knowledge comes from leaks.

I see people trying to talk themselves into saying a Mario game is coming next year for obvious reasons(movie and Nintendo world) but then tying it with a new switch hardware and I just don't see it. It's one thing to tie a new game with the movie and theme park but trying to do the same with a piece of hardware is setting yourself up for disappointment.

Facts on god. To be fair this is the Zelda game made with the Switch in mind. With, what, 6 years in development I am very curious to see what they've been able to dd. I'm not even the biggest Zelda fan but Botw is one my favorite gaming experiences ever and I'll be getting TotK at launch, no hesitation.

Maybe not oblivious, but... ah hell, I don't know. They know well enough to keep me strung along like the masochist piggy I am because I'm nothing but a chump for them.

Certain people in my post secondary career knew well enough to stop playing with my emotions in less time than Nintendo does.

It certainly evokes the same wish I could have been someone different to get the kind of relationship I wanted to make me happy, but that's a discussion probably best suited for a therapist

thoroughly agree with this. I've known for literal years now that following nintendo stuff is no longer fun, interesting, or valuable to me, it's just weeks like this that hammer home that I need to change

Given the screen size, I don't care if we get 1080p, but if they're less expensive for Nintendo, it's possible.

Honestly though, OLED+HDR would be a bigger upgrade for me than higher density.

I'm 47 and my eyes suck. I hook up portables to a 48" monitor at my desk. I play DS games on that monitor via emulation so that I get a bigger screen.

MARIO: Head-a-into the light-a, Raccoon! Wahoo!
LUIGI: Yeah yeah, listen to my brother, Raccoon. It's your time!
WARIO: Wahahaha! Wario is just out of frame and also wants you to return to God's kingdom!
KIRBY: Poyo!

Super Smash Bros 3DS XL
Or the many, many special edition 2DSes that came after Switch

This changes. Very little.
That's a whole different situation though? The Switch replaced the Wii U, not the 3DS. Nintendo only phased out the DS because of how big the Switch was becoming.

It was a non-New special edition 3DS that came out literally alongside Smash Bros.

And New 3DS.
If it was just this and we were getting constant rumors from people and devs and production lines that something was happening then maybe I'd agree. But we're hearing very little about a new Switch outside of the public Drake stuff, and that's perplexing to me even without the new SE. When you add that into the mix it's starting to look really unlikely.

I mean, this leaks with photos but nothing at all about a Drake Switch leaks? Which would supposedly be out around the same time?

I dunno, I'm not considering this the final nail in the coffin but it's sure looking unlikely. For H1 specifically.

Mass reply time:

Am I the only one who has mixed feelings with the leak of the Zelda TOTK themed Switch Oled, I mean the leak of the Splatoon 3 themed Switch edition was a day before its announcement and yet this leak is at least 1 month before it is announced is weird no doubt.
It's true that it looks real because of how detailed the console looks, but if tomorrow they tell me it's fake I wouldn't react saying "wow I certainly didn't expect that".
Remember that at one point this thing would've been out months ago. Zelda was delayed out of 2022 quite a while ago now, but perhaps the original plan still affected production of this model.

Additionally, to better restructure the year, Nintendo swapped the release dates of Xenoblade and Splatoon.
I won't comment on the rest of this, but there's a fair amount of evidence Splatoon 3 ran into development issues and came into September hot. It very likely just wasn't able to release in July.

We should be happy about this: it’s probably a pretty good indicator that Zelda isn’t getting delayed again.
It's rated by the ESRB and everything. It almost seems as if they actually could've gotten the game out this year if they really wanted; certainly this fiscal year. The May timing is rather strange at this point.

Not going to be a port lol.

Here’s our new 4K system. Here’s a boxed 720p port of the OG Switch version which you can already play through BC.

It’ll 100% get a remaster.
I got exactly this far into this debate before realizing that the definition of remaster is going to result in a lot of talking past each other. Do you consider Tropical Freeze on the Switch a remaster because it runs at 1080p instead of 720p? Most still call it a port.

(Technically speaking, remasters are a subset of ports anyway. If it gets a remaster, then it got a port. In my mind, remastering means at least touching up the majority of the assets, like in Skyward Sword HD.)

I disagree with this. Putting out a special edition version of the previous console on the same day as a new one is just silly and will undoubtedly create tons of confusion.

Logistically speaking it would be a bad idea too because every TotK special edition they ship will take the place of a new Drake Switch that they are much more interested in selling. I think it's pretty much a nail in the coffin here, assuming those images are not fake.
Technically, in this scenario (that I agree isn't happening), they'd be releasing two weeks apart, not same day. The special editions have released two weeks before the game dating back to at least the Animal Crossing one.

(I'm also not sure why some people are H1 2023 or bust for the year. H2 is far more reasonable than H1 at this point imo)

I think this could very well be the final box. Splatoon 3's box only has some key art and basic background patterns, showing very little about the actual game it's themed around

This is for the best I feel because the special editions don't come with the game.

In fact, I remarked a little while ago that May 12 was two weeks after the start of Golden Week, an appealing sales time for Nintendo. Guess when the Splatoon 3 OLED came out...

This. It's not doubling as a game box like we're used to with prior Nintendo limited edition hardware. Screenshots would almost feel tacky on something like this.
