StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

I really wanted that game but I have to sometimes draw the line on performance.

I don’t know I found that game the exact type of performance I could manage. I thought it only tanked when shifting screens and quickly stabilized? That was my memory of it. Didn’t impact most dungeons screens and the like.

Regardless I agree it would be another great candidate for a boost because clearly folks like yourself didn’t tolerate it.

That requires Nvidia to redesign consumer Ampere GPUs with TSMC's IPs and EUV lithography in mind since consumer Ampere GPUs are using Samsung's IPs and DUV lithography, which I imagine isn't inexpensive.

Isn’t the 4000 series manufactured at TSCM so it doesn’t matter?

I’m sure it’s good and playable but it being the work of art it is makes it harder for me to swallow any messiness.

Amazing artstyle.

Yeah lots of drops to 30 FPS, but it's almost always triggered by a transition and fixed up in a few seconds. Except the swamp area I believe.

My far fetched theory about LA performance is that it was developed under the assumption that Nintendo would allow faster clocks on Mariko. It released as a launch game for the lite.

Q9) Comparing the balance sheets as of March 31, 2021 and March 31, 2022, inventories have increased by approximately 11 billion yen.

A9) There are two major reasons. Under the tight supply-demand situation for semiconductor-related components, it is necessary to prepare for production by securing inventories of raw materials and components earlier than before.

Under these circumstances, we need to prepare for production by securing inventories of raw materials and components earlier than in the past. The first reason is that we are holding larger inventories of raw materials than in the past.

The second reason is that there was a change in accounting treatment with the adoption of the new revenue recognition standard, and the impact of this change is an increase of 36.5 billion yen. In the production process of our hardware, we sell the parts we procure to assemblers for a fee, and then we buy back the assembled products.

Under the new revenue recognition standard, the Company is no longer able to recognize the extinguishment of inventories (on the balance sheet) when parts are supplied to contract assemblers for a fee, since the Company is effectively obligated to repurchase the parts.

As a result, instead of recognizing the extinguishment of inventories, the Company changed the accounting treatment to recognize a "liability for a transaction for which parts were supplied for value" as an obligation to repurchase the parts from the vendor, which resulted in an increase in inventories on the balance sheet.

The GPU architecture the RTX 40 series (Ada Lovelace) is based on is different from the GPU architecture the RTX 30 series (Ampere) is based on.

Any reason to believe this particular post has any credibility?
No, the leaker said he got information from credibile source which leaks got confirmed twice before. And i think it may corroborate leaks from other Chinese gaming forum. Anyways, take it grain of salt.

Little reminder that we still haven't had a Zelda game in 2022.
My head canon says that they're trying to get BotW2 out before the end of the fiscal year, which would count as a Zelda game "this year". That may be wishful thinking on my part of course - if they release TP or WW this year that'd mean BotW2 is probably later in Spring than I'd like =P (i.e. after this fiscal year).

a new 2d zelda in 2022 however... i'd take further botw2 delay for that honestly

Yeah I'd rather play OoT at non-20FPS than Wind Waker, sorry =P. It's super charming and music is incredible but Forsaken Fortress makes the game grind to a halt before it's even started, and the dungeons feel like doing the dishes xD .

Did we actually get one every year since BotW? Also unless NSO doesn't count we got Majora's Mask in 2022 so there's that
2017- Breath of the Wild
2018- Hyrule Warriors DE / Cadence of Hyrule
2019- Link's Awakening
2020- Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity
2021- Skyward Sword

2022-..........

I think TP/WW enhanced to 4k would be a good reason to release them again, especially if Nintendo plans to sell them separately

Still holding out hope for something like a Zelda 2 or ALBW remake instead of just dumping TP/WW for the holidays.
Grezzo's last project was Miitopia and that released a year ago and couldn't have taken the whole team to do. So they could have been working on another remaster for a while.

Haha, what's kind of funny is that one forum actually mentioned not only that Reddit quote you had, but also that it was posted here! :ROFLMAO: Such a small world!

Also, really interesting discussion regarding the 8nm, 7nm, and on down things! Because I'm dumb, if you were to take an original Switch, which I'm assuming uses 8nm, kept everything the same, but brought it down to 7nm, what kind of performance enhancement comes from that?

Anyways, a weird patent from Nintendo just popped up in the Japanese patent office, and I'm curious is anyone knew what this might be? I know a lot of them don't transpire and such, but this one is quite different from others they've had go up in recent months.

Here's the link, which I hope works for bringing it up! You may have to click the document link after clicking this link, but it should be machine translated into English.

It seems more like a toy of some sort, albeit one I've not seen from them. But, there is mention within the description that it's effects could actually be shown/conducted on a separate display apart from the device itself. If it's not a toy, could it be something attached on a controller? Could it be a fitness-related attachment? Just curious what you all thought!

4K NSO let's gooooooo
Oh man...that'd be amazing!

There are some whispers from China, it is said that the Switch 'Pro' is in production and the chip is orin based.

I was just reading about Orin and see its 8nm. Whether this rumour is true or not, I guess we should expect the next system to be based on an existing NVIDIA product, right?

I don't follow them as much as I used to. I mainly like the Chris Cohen era, Runners Four & Milk Man, and saw them a couple of times around then. I liked Love Lore. Amazing band.
Runners Four is my favorite Hoof album, but I really liked Actually, You Can this past year. La Isla Bonita and Breakup Song also rule. Post-Cohen has a different feel, but still oodles of good stuff.

(Sorry everyone for gunking up the thread!)

The original Switch uses is on 20nm! The Lite/OLED/Redbox Mariko revision is on TSMC's 16nm process.

Apologies if this came up before (it probably has...), but what are the prospects for backwards compatibility with the currently speculated hardware? Is it likely that Nintendo will provide current APIs completely on the next Switch? Because in that case, games could continue to work the same as now, especially with earlier rumors about developers preferably unlocking frame rate and/or resolution for a potential Switch Pro. Or is this going to be a complete no-go?

I don't think anyone has specifics, but the general opinion is that it would be absolute madness for Nintendo not to have full-BC to the original Switch library, especially if they are positioning Drake as a continuation of the Switch line.

This is for their theme park.

Exactly. I think the library size is up there with the DS, and we got backwards compatibility with the 3DS. Nintendo would be crazy not to allow BC.

@fwd-bwd you're famous, sort of, lol

Haha, amazing! Was actually just mentioning how small the world is, and he's popping up on Weibo too:

I personally don't think you're gunking up the thread! Kind of a "palette cleanser" to come across stuff like this! :)

And geez, 20nm/16nm?! I would have to imagine the shift to, say, 8nm, while leaving everything else the same, would be a huge improvement then!! (I'm not technical, so I'm sure it's hard to make things apples to apples, but theoretically is all I was curious about, haha!)
This is for their theme park.
Perfect! Thank you! It kind of seems like a light up Otamatone or something from the description!

2017- Breath of the Wild
2018- Hyrule Warriors DE / Cadence of Hyrule

2020- Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity

2022-..........
I really don't think this has been an intentional strategy apart from Zelda games being popular.

There'll be nothing in 2022. Book it.

Yes, we're expecting a pretty large leap.

It seems to be a toy that makes/changes lights and sounds when squeezed. So it's kind of like those squeaky dog toys, but electronic and for human(?). And yes, the patent may be applied to wireless controls. Hmm, could be for a physical toy sold at the Super Nintendo World?
Ah, here we are.

In the full response Furukawa says the shortages are why they’ve stocked up on more raw materials than before.
Thanks for the link. As I suggested previously, the impact of the new ASBJ accounting standard is relatively small. The explanation about the shipments to assemblers is a bit puzzling to me. I thought that would have been recognized as work in progress inventories under the old standard and raw materials under the new standard. But what they said here seems to indicate otherwise.
@fwd-bwd you're famous, sort of, lol
It seems to be spreading to other sites too. This is a lot of pressure because I can easily be wrong. 😅 I'll stay away from gaming sites for a day and focus on work.

The list isn’t quite representative.

Here’s a better view of it:

2011- Ocarina of Time 3D/ OG Skyward Sword
2013- Link Between World/ WWHD
2014- Hyrule Warriors (3DS)
2015- Majora’s Mask 3D
2016- Twilight Princess HD
2017- Breath of the Wild
2018- Hyrule Warriors DE / Cadence of Hyrule
2019- Link's Awakening
2020- Hyrule Warriors 2: Age of Calamity
2021- Skyward Sword

They were doing yearly releases for nearly a decade.

2022 will miss it obviously 🤭

Like 2012 :p

it's expected to have BC. the technical problems are solvable given Nvidia also works on the API.

BOTW2 should still make it to the 2022 FY and that's what matters for Nintendo, there hasn't been any FY in the 10s/20s without a Zelda game bar FY 12

MVG discussed a myriad of possibilities on an episode of Nate's podcast that Nintendo and other third parties could pursue when it comes to backwards compatibility, whether hardware or software based.

Yes, it's a possibility backwards compatibility could be nixxed entirely, but truthfully I think it shouldn't be something we have to worry about. Devs will find a way to ensure their games can still work for the entire Switch ecosystem of owners, and those that own this Switch upgrade will be able to enjoy the benefit of improved visuals and framerates

Nah I still expect we're getting a port/remaster at the very least.

Maybe even a new 2D game from Grezzo, who knows.

Something with PS4+ levels of power in the Switch form factor would be insane, wouldn't it? Kind of a dream Nintendo system. But it's not implausible.
Switch is PS3+ already so by analogy I've always expected a next-gen Switch to be near XBO/PS4 level + modern architectural improvements, those consoles are almost a decade old at this point. I've read that overclocked Mariko units with homebrew is comparable to an XBO in some games. My minimum expectations are that Drake can comfortably receive XBO/PS4 ports, and 'impossible' ports of XSX/PS5 exclusives.

I recently tested God of War with performance DLSS, rendering at 720p outputting to 4K on my LG CX. The thought of the next Nintendo device having an optimized form of this is very exciting.

If this rumor was true, the right way to do it would be to have a toggle capping/ uncapping the frame rate. No dev would intentionally compromise the game on existing hardware, to benefit unreleased hardware.

So the rumor isn’t true.
