I know the window for it has passed but I still want to see Grezzo make an original/third Hero of Time game, reusing assets and design philosophies from Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. Top down Zelda games used to be the low(er) budget games to fill in the schedule between big 3D tentpoles; it would be awesome if low(er) budget 'traditional' 3D Zelda games shared that space alongside new top down games.

Lol im waiting until Wind Waker comes to Switch before I play it for the first time. I really want both WWHD and BOTW2 to come this year hopefully!

I feel like Wind Waker HD makes a lot of sense for 2023, with it being the 20th anniversary of the original international release and the 10th anniversary of the initial remaster release. Doesn't guarantee anything, of course.

I'd prefer something new. Just wondering where the resources for that come from. Grezzo x EPD 3 is the likeliest option, for sure, but I'd also like Grezzo to have opportunity to do more of their own new IP.

part of me wonders if Nintendo doesn't know what to do with 2D Zelda, and I don't necessarily mean just from a lack of management resources.

making 2D Zelda the 'traditional classic zelda' experience would make sense, but the thing is, people forget ALBW was basically the game to set zelda on the right track they're currently going down with BOTW. if they want to continue to innovate with 2D Zelda, then the issue is it would probably be a lot of the same kind of evolutions that 3D Zelda is going through.

I guess just being a "dungeon-oriented" game would be enough to differentiate itself, along with the fact that a top-down perspective would make things like free-climbing and an emphasis on physics unlikely. but then that begs the question of where to go with the series, still. and honestly, I want them to retain the open-endedness of dungeon order, but don't want dungeons to only require like one item, either. something more akin to ALTTP I guess.

They could always make it more Metroid-like plus try to realize what they set out to do with Skyward Sword and the blurring of overworld and dungeons.

I would love a brand new 2D Zelda. Nintendo remakes aren't worth it when you're a big fan of the series because they rarely change things besides QOL and graphics.

The future of 2D Zelda is a bit bleak to me. I'm only expecting two scenarios moving forward:

1- Remakes
2- Multiplayer focused game

Personally, I wish they revived Mysterious Murasame Castle for a top down action focused game.

I agree. Are there little QOL tweaks that could be added to the Oracle games, for instance? Sure. It would be nice to have sword/shield not take up one of only two items spots, for instance.

At the same time, though, the core gameplay holds up really well and those graphics are pretty timeless.

I would much rather have something new. Same for Metroid - don’t remake Super, just make a new game.

Is Nate actually credible? He said Monolith Soft worked on PLA which was debunked (now this false claim annoyingly has spread like wildfire across the gaming community). He quote retweets info from other gaming sites on his Twitter and says "This is correct" to give the impression he already knew about the info (if he did, why isn't he the first break it?). He got Switch Pro wrong.

Is there a reason why people hold him in high regard?
Draw your own conclusion, but the Monolith soft comment was objectively incorrect and was piggybacked from a source that didn’t even really say that and was taken out of context, other scenarios? Like I said, draw your own conclusion and look at it from an outsider seeing in, not from someone inside the circle looking at the others inside the same circle. If your gut says something that spurred you to question this because it feels wrong… trust your gut on this.

That’s all I’m going to say about this.

botw is so far removed from classic zelda that I think they could honestly coexist
I would definitely like a brand new Zelda in the classic OoT style tbh. I think Zelda is a big enough franchise to have both 2D, linear 3D and open world 3D games.

I don't want Wind Waker HD this year because it would mean probably no BOTW2 this year.

I think Nintendo knows not to release 2 3D Zeldas in the same year, even if they are spread out and even if there probably wouldn't be any sales effect. There's still a chance some people would hold off one or the other because they know they already have a huge epic Zelda adventure to play. Plus we just got Skyward Sword HD last year.

I don’t know, I think releasing WW/TP double pack in May makes a ton of sense. If you release them after BOTW2, I think you’re handcuffing sales a bit. And I’m guessing Grezzo is warming on some sort of 2D Zelda that will likely be ready by next year. Releasing WW/TP in 2024 seems like to it would be too late in the game to be worthwhile.

Genuinely surprised there hasn’t been a multiplayer 2D Zelda on Switch actually. I would’ve thought Nintendo wouldn’t be able to help themselves from doing that

Yeah that'd be cool, and it might actually be (read: almost certainly be) more natural of an implementation by default than Skyward Sword's was, too.

We need more dungeons like the forest dungeon in the Dark World of ALTTP, in general. Integration into the world itself was so cool.

I really need to pick up Cadence of Hyrule one of these days. It's the closet we have to a new 2d Zelda.

I hope Grezzo is making a Triforce Heroes 2. I'm the only one who loved that game, but it has so much potential!

I guess my problem with this is that if you're someone who wasn't a huge fan of ALBW (like me) due to the item system and open-ended nature of it, since BOTW also has a huge emphasis on freedom, then we're kind of left without anything in the older-style Zelda vein. What I want most out of a new 2D Zelda is something more like the Oracle games, but modernized. Those are my favorite 2D Zeldas by a wide margin.

I do like the idea of blending the overworld and the dungeons more, I'd like that a lot. Make it more like a top-down metroidvania. But I would want it to still have item-gating and a more linear structure (even if there could still be some choices to be made here and there, and maybe some sequence-breaking opportunities if you know what you're doing).

The future of 2D Zelda is a bit bleak to me.

It’s a good thing others are picking up the pace. Death’s Door might be the best 2D Zelda-like since the original LttP, and that new game from the Shovel Knight creators looks great.

Because being first isn't always the best idea, especially if sources/contacts have not given permission to go public with the information. If someone else breaks elements of the story then those restrictions are lifted.

PLA info may have been wrong and my contact on it likely misunderstood how Mononlith or an employee/s may have assisted or been involved. It happens.

Man I want new FE and Xenoblade info so badly, this direct cannot come soon enough, I must be sated

Do we have any solid intel on timing for next direct? I'm so hungry I'll even take unreliable scoops 😂
I mean its almost guaranteed to be within the next 2 weeks, we just don't know if it will be this week or the week after and we haven't had any insider indication one way or the other unfortunately

Hmm yeah... The thing keeping me from feeling like it's absolutely gonna happen is... Well, following Nintendo for my whole life hahaha. The second you think something is a pattern, Nintendo is like, nah dawg, not today

BUT it makes sense to have one soon. A final promo for Kirby and official release date announcement for Advance Wars are definitely things I'd expect them to do soon. Though those are both things they could do on Twitter instead...

Does anyone have a summary of rumored but unannounced games for this year? I’ve seen

-Prime HD remake
-Xenoblade 3
-Mario 3D Mario to launch with Movie

Anything else?
Some kind of Mario game is possible but I'm not sure it has to be necessarily 3D... In fact some kind of spin-off or even a 2D one would be easier, IMO...

It isn't "may have been wrong", it was categorically wrong. We have the credits and not a single employee from Monolith or even slightly related was credited. It wasn't the case for previous games as well.

Out of all the big games I think 3D Mario is the least likely we get this year. Mario spin-off is always a good prediction.

Hopefully we get release dates for House of the Dead remake and TMNT: Shredder's Revenge in the next Direct. Excited to play those.

Anything Mario or Zelda or Fire Emblem would be icing on top.

This feels a little needlessly hostile over something that was never a big deal in the first place.
