StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

Answer me this:

If Nintendo was so short stocked/panicked on software and had to delay everything to accommodate, then why didn't they hold onto Super Mario Wonder? Switch didn't need Wonder last year with TotK, Fire Emblem Engage, Pikmin 4, SMRPG, Pokemon, Xenoblade Future Redeemed, Mario Kart DLC, Advance Wars, etc? Could have used that for Switch 2 as a cross-platform game if they're so desperate.

Or better yet, why are they clumping/releasing most of their first party lineup in the first 3 months of 2024 when software is already anemic? Another Code, Mario VS Donkey Kong, Princess Peach Showtime, Splatoon 3 Side Order. Then to have to resort to a partner direct when there's only 2 remasters left on your plate, no original games for the rest of 2024 and with no release dates on said games, sounds ingenious.

It doesn't make sense, I don't buy these rumors.

FY2025 runs from April 2024 to March 2025. In just the last month we've heard release anywhere from May 2024, to "early summer", to September 2024, to "2025". In NCL's financial report they said Switch would be the primary source of income for 2024 and that they would have an update during the next earnings call.

As far as I'm concerned, nothing is 100% until the thing's out. There are a lot of potential factors at play -- the US recession, mass industry layoffs, weak yen. I don't think any sort of delay would be due to Switch 1 selling well or poorly, and I don't think any sort of delay would be due to hardware issues. But there could be production chain issues, or maybe close partners (like -- again -- Bandai Namco) could have said some software that was planned to back up Nintendo's first party efforts won't be in place in time.

With Xbox and Playstation both basically saying they don't have any big titles planned this calendar year, it could have bought Nintendo some time to coast on third party porting efforts, AA & indie releases. Orrrrr there wasn't a delay at all and everyone's freaking out over nothing.

Something else we have to remember is Nintendo staff have admitted they absolutely "leak" fake dates and info to try and help track down the leakers. So~ they could still have a Partner Showcase next week and an unveiling/teaser of Switch 2 in March/April/May, and a release later in calendar 2024.... Orrrrrrr maybe the Partner Showcase is to make up for the end of 1st party titles and to tell folks that it's OK to buy a Switch, more games are coming -- just from 3rd party publishers (which include Microsoft Game Studios/Xbox).

I’ll not be surprised if it’s true, despite really hoping it’s not, but until we get clarification from Nintendo (lol) or a General Direct I’m keeping the faith.

We cannot be going into another year of the Switch with Princess Peach Showtime and 2 loosely dated remakes. If that’s the plan a general has to be imminent.

It's clear that those games aren't ready. Perhaps Nintendo is struggling with next gen development
unless all their games are BotW/TotK level, I don't think so. there's a big difference in "4k development" and "hd development", as the latter came with a paradigm shift in how games are made. 4K development is just that development but closer to using master assets than not

Another Code and Mario vs. DK are not big titles, lmao.

They probably have stuff like Zelda spinoffs or Mario Sluggers later in the year that are just as big or bigger.

I would guess they have Mario Party and Pokemon for late in the year as well.

Also re: Pokémon they are typically slow to embrace the new hardware so I don't think they would be talking about a switch 2 title at the end of the month
I was talking just about the Switch 2 logo within Pokémon announcements to boost the console, because Switch 1 SHOULD be playable also on switch 2

To play the advocate. What if the Nintendo Switch 2 would be announced in March 2024. But with just a simple codename. Like NX2 Launching in March 2025, like they did in April 2016. This also makes sure the investors would shut up.

Wait… if they gonna do a similar thing like with the Switch, that means we can expect a January Event like they did in 2017? Would be down for that.

The partner direct if true is what really throws me off. If Switch 2 is really coming March 2025 you would think Nintendo would be able to host a somewhat typical February direct to give the Switch 2024 some meat.

Right, that's what I've been saying.

Partner Showcase next week no longer makes sense, if Switch 2 in 2025 is real.

What carries the rest of 2024, especially 1st half, beyond Princess Peach Showtime and bunch of remakes/remasters?

Nothing this year is going to sell hardware because the fanbases are here already, so the "big titles" aspect applies for everything, non-announced included. Do you think a Fire Emblem remake (3rd fire emblem game, 5th when including spin-offs), Sluggers (weakest Mario sports game), or Wind Waker HD (old port and like 6th Zelda game on Switch) is going to sell units? No.

This is how it feels to see the thread move multiple pages per hour:

It's because this is among the weirdest development for the Switch 2 in months at this point. This outright doesn't make sense and yet it provoking an insane reaction.

Something weird is going on.

Guess it is wat it is. None Zero chance that this is indeed happening. I don’t like it but what can you do. Gonna be a depressing year then.
Could really have used something to look forward to.

I mean, nothing this year will be a system seller probably. The system sellers will be people still buying it for Smash Ultimate, Mario Kart 8, TotK, Mario Wonder, etc.

What is this Eurogamer article?

Full on "launches 2025" headline like it's a fact, and then can't even solidly go by their own sources cause these are not sure about it themselves?

I... am used to a better Eurogamer.

I suppose it has already been mentioned a thousand times here, but what's the point of doing a partner showcase then? If the console is really going to 2025... Why don't you do a General showing your first party even if they are minor games/remakes/ports?

It does not make any sense.

It does seem like the competition gave Nintendo a great window to release this year and dominate awards with 3D Mario. Would be a tough pill if Nintendo misses this window, but at the end of the day if software wasn't ready than not much they could do.

I think this is going to be a long year for Nintendo fans.

The "Red Sea shipping is a huge issue that could delay the Switch 2!" stuff is just... What.

"Additional costs for the detour itself may not be that significant. "The cost increase is much lower than the 200% increase in spot rates," Damas said. He estimates that the additional cost of going around the cape ranges from 3% to 20%, depending on sailing speed. Additional costs are not directly proportionate to the distance, as the ship operator does not have to pay the Suez Canal toll."

The S&P 500 probably wouldn't have gone up 10% in the last two months if business people actually thought this was a major issue.

The "- report" in the title means they are summarizing a report by someone else.
