This is such a terrible idea. We shouldn't encourage the state of this thread as the status quoI'm of the opinion that we should always have a General Speculation thread so that the main Nintendo thread can just be about game talk and hanging out. I like my stuff separate like that.
Why is this a terrible idea? This is such a terrible idea. We shouldn't encourage the state of this thread as the status quo

That's not very helpful...Because we shouldn't encourage the state of this thread as the status quo
What have I not made clear? This thread being constant makes it really dull and strung outThat's not very helpful...
I totally respect that sentiment, but many of us do not feel that way, instead enjoying the ups and downs and memes and other good-natured craziness that goes on here. I would wager that over 95% of my time reading here on Famiboards is spent between this thread and the hardwares speculation thread, as they bring me the most enjoyment (I catch up on them at every meal and just before bedtime). What have I not made clear? It's about the culture. I believe that the threads are better as temporary spaces dedicated to specific periods and events. I wanted to close this thread after Kirby, honestly.I totally respect that sentiment, but many of us do not feel that way, instead enjoying the ups and downs and memes and other good-natured craziness that goes on here. What I really don't understand is why you, or anyone else who is finding this thread unenjoyable, keep spending time here? Why not pop in once a week or something instead of being here daily? I don't get it.

+1Keep the 2 threads.
a long term thread that resets every morning with no hope or expectation for most of the year sounds absolutely miserable to meWhat culture?
Again, if this sounds absolutely miserable to you, I don't see why you would spend time here.a long term thread that resets every morning with no hope or expectation for most of the year sounds absolutely miserable to me
maybe it seems appealing now, with september only slightly too far away. but what about after the tokyo game show partner showcase? what about in the middle of october with no sign of metroid prime?
The culture of the thread. The way people post, how they treat each other, and the collective sentiment about Nintendo speculation. Shorter, purposeful threads maximize the positive feelings of the above, long dry periods maximize negative feelings.Again, if this sounds absolutely miserable to you, I don't see why you would spend time here.
Personally, doing a bit of speculating about Nintendo every day is a lot of fun for me and apparently for a lot of other people, hence why we come to this thread and the hardware thread regularly.
So, what culture were you referring to?

You keep trying to spin this onto me as "just leave," but I'm trying to endorse what I think will be best for the site. You say it's fun now, but come winter you'd still be doing it because the thread is there, and the thread would be soul-suckingly dour.
I've come to agree with this. My original proposal in fall was for a Q1 thread and Q3 thread, with E3 getting separate considerations because it's so consistent (lmfao). Under this model, E3 speculation would presumably take place in the thread for the date announcement, which historically has come in May.Having a Direct Speculation Thread in Q4/FQ3 is pointless, though. Do we want to speculate about the Feb/Mar Direct for half a year?

Usually October and November are all about TGA announcements speculation.Having a Direct Speculation Thread in Q4/FQ3 is pointless, though. Do we want to speculate about the Feb/Mar Direct for half a year?
On the other hand, though, having these threads around permanently as a containment zone for Direct speculation ensures the General Discussion Thread remains a chill hangout spot. Perhaps that thread could be rebranded as "Community Thread" to make the distinction clearer.I've come to agree with this. Not to mention that there might be new hardware announcements so people could be speculating for a direct that never happens. I like when Nintendo switches things up and doesn’t follow a boring pattern for news and announcements. Chaos is more funHaving a Direct Speculation Thread in Q4/FQ3 is pointless, though. I'm not trying to spin anything, I'm trying to explain my position on why I want this thread to continue to exist, while also trying to understand your position that seems to be contrary to mine. The culture of the thread. Are you new here? I'm not sure if you are. In terms of how people are treating each other in this thread, isn't it a) up to each poster to choose their own behavior, b) up to each poster/reader to either directly call out disrespectful behavior and/or report disrespectful behavior to the mods, and c) up to the mods to handle disrespectful behavior as per the site's standards?
Yes, I say it is fun now.
And what is this all about?: "come winter you'd still be doing it because the thread is there, and the thread would be soul-suckingly dour." Are you pretending to know what my motivations for reading this thread, and reactions to this thread, will be in the future? What?
4Hi folks, we'd like to survey the community a little to get a sense of what people want for this thread, and for the Speculation threads more broadly.
At this point, it seems fairly unlikely that there will be any event in July. This was always a distinct possibility, and at the time this thread was made the contingency plan was to simply convert this thread to the Fall Direct Speculation thread at the start of August.
The rationale behind this plan:
- this way will stick closest to the original seasonal schedule of these threads (with the Fall one just starting, uh, very early)
- people enjoy these threads, even if there isn't much to speculate about
Some potential counterpoints to this plan:
- people are starting to feel a little fatigue from the constant speculation
- the line between this thread and the General thread is increasingly unclear
- this thread tends to be more cliquey and can be off-putting to newcomers
So, with this in mind, here are a few proposals for how to handle this thread (and Speculation threads in general) moving forward:
1. Continue with the current plan as outlined above
2. Leave this thread open, and allow these threads to exist more permanently with less formally defined rules
3. Close this thread, and open a new one mid-August
4. Close this thread, and retire these threads for a little while
We are of course open to any and all alternative suggestions. Thanks!

but we have a chill chat threadOn the other hand, though, having these threads around permanently as a containment zone for Direct speculation ensures the General Discussion Thread remains a chill hangout spot. No, I am not new here, have been reading Famiboards from its inception, was a regular reader of ResetEra, and was perusing the Nintendo and Xbox threads of NeoGAF before then. I just don't find any interest in posting most of the time because all you fine folks typically discuss everything I would want to discuss while also being highly informative and entertaining. Are you new here? I'm not sure if you are. On ResetEra, there were long periods in the Direct threads that were absolutely miserable, but people posted because the thread was there.
The primary difference now of course is that the community there has an entire site to itself, so the social aspect can be served elsewhere and, in theory, the thread's activity can stop naturally in these dry periods.
However, I feel that there is a component of social engineering in designing a forum and its threads, and maintain that said design influences people's behavior. Right now we are "speculating" about nothing, so if there wasn't a place dedicated to it no one would be speculating.
Let's be honest, nobody goes there. Willing to bet the majority of people barely check out the Roost section in general once a month, let alone the chit chat thread specifically.but we have a chill chat thread
I do agree with this, but we have segmented all of the extras out. We already have two general hangout threads. The Nintendo General Discussion thread is of course descended from the Direct Speculation threads of ResetEra.And what is wrong with just hanging out and chit-chatting about various video game-related topics (or Subway, I guess) when the news or speculating is slow? Why does that have to be done in a different thread? It's comfy here with all the "extras" that come along with the speculating, in my opinion.
Comments like this reinforces the cliquey nature of this thread. We should do better to welcome newcomers to Famiboards. Are you new here? I'm not sure if you are. On ResetEra,
It's not about being unwelcoming, it's about understanding the basis of the discussion. My characterization of how the threads would go in winter is based on history, not random conjecture or extrapolation of someone's current posting.Comments like this reinforces the cliquey nature of this thread. Raccoon, I think the point several people are trying to make is that your opinion is still just your opinion, even if it has historical basis. It seems pretty likely to me, for instance, that a variant of this thread would be less 'miserable' in the winter because it's not the entire focus of the Nintendo community of this site. On ResetEra, it was. So if you wanted a chill Nintendo community hangout thread, all you had was the Direct Speculation thread, and you had to co-exist with people hyping up an event months away that you weren't that interested in talking about. Additionally, threads in general tended to be more miserable on Era. That's why we made this site lolIt's not about being unwelcoming, it's about understanding the basis of the discussion. I know that my posts are kind of rambly and directionless but I already conceded this in the post that they grabbed that unflattering quote fromRaccoon, I think the point several people are trying to make is that your opinion is still just your opinion, even if it has historical basis. this specifically was why I tried to give my opinion that historical context: to make clear that what I was saying wasn't specifically about himAnd what is this all about?: "come winter you'd still be doing it because the thread is there, and the thread would be soul-suckingly dour." Are you pretending to know what my motivations for reading this thread, and reactions to this thread, will be in the future? What?
As much as I agree that certain topics at certain times can completely derail a thread or cause unneeded conflict, I feel that having hard and fast rules about what can and can not be discussed in this thread is trending a bit too close to content policing.Honestly, I think the solution that would satisfy everyone is putting some rules in place about what discussion is allowed in the speculation threads. Serious or shitpost, everything in this thread should relate to upcoming Nintendo announcements in some way.
I do agree with this, but we have segmented all of the extras out. We already have two general hangout threads. The Nintendo General Discussion thread is of course descended from the Direct Speculation threads of ResetEra.
I think you're probably right. People don't like rules, and they'd have to be either frustratingly strict or wind up frustratingly ambiguous. Not a good solutionAs much as I agree that certain topics at certain times can completely derail a thread or cause unneeded conflict, I feel that having hard and fast rules about what can and can not be discussed in this thread is trending a bit too close to content policing.
And once content policing happens here, why not in other threads, too?
That's a very dangerous and slippery slope if you ask me.
Personally, I think thread derailments should be handled by the thread's community (posters and readers), and if peer pressure does not work, then get the mods involved to get the thread back on track (or at least less off-track).
