StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

Btw. i will totally take the credits for the March reveal while saying this is a (little late) birthday present from Nintendo for my 40th birthday at the end of February.

So, you're welcome.

And for @Bokuringo , i'm sorry for killing the servers.

I honestly can't believe that Joy-Con will be "bigger", Nintendo target audience is still family/kids
Switch was already massive for kids, if they make it bigger that would be really surprising.
What... That's still smaller than a Wii Remote.

I have a plan.

"Founders only" limit for that event!
I have another idea.

What about staff only :sneaky:

And so Famiboards is dying with Switch. Its live was short but glorious. Rest in piece, fami. Switch 2 speculation I‘ll miss you.
Fami 2 will rise from the ashes of Fami 1. Let's welcome Switch 3 speculation!

My two long standing beliefs are

1: reveal H1, release H2
2: 3000 pages by launch, barring something like a thread close.

I'm more confident than ever in both of them.

It seems like we‘ll have to debate which name it‘ll get, I saw a Super Famiboards suggestion few posts ago. It adds a whole new dimension of speculation.

I was waiting for that! Finally we‘ll get it.
My sources tell me they'll be incorporating a "Yeah..." feature, instead.

The Switch logo is literally the joy-cons. All of the trailers and commercials for every hardware and software so far have the click and joy-cons at the beginning.

How would having no joy-cons even work? They would literally need to do an entire rebranding.

4.5 inches in height is smaller than the Wii U Gamepad's 5.3, which was also a device meant to be held for long periods of time and even carried around for off-TV play. I would say weight distribution plays a larger factor. The original Steam Deck could get uncomfortably heavy, to the extent where the OLED update made a significant difference despite having the same XY dimensions.

Is there any real basis to the notion that the Switch is 'massive' for kids? It's something I read a lot on forums but not reflected in real life (sales or anecdotally). I see kids play on their parents' iPads with the flimsiest grips and the Switch 2 will not be that large. I've handed the Switch to let a literal toddler cousin play Sonic 2 and heard no fuss.

I agree that Switch isn’t that difficult to hold (even through it hasn’t the same portability as the DS/3DS family). Though I think comparing handhelds with tablets isn‘t a good idea, you hold them completely differently.

Honestly, children hold tablets in the strangest, inconsistent, and cutest ways. At least with the Switch, there's something to grip onto at all times.

Just listened to the podcast @NateDrake and it was great ! It's nice to hear some positive stuff about the Switch at the beginning, instead of the usual "the Switch is so outdated, we need photorealistic games on Switch 2" talk that some like to push.

Also really hoping for 16GB of RAM.

Regarding the removal of Joy-Con I don't think the idea is going away but the name of the controllers might change. If they keep the Switch branding, they keep removable Joy-Cons.

Otherwise, Nintendo cannot call this device the Switch 2. Yes, I know Switch Lite exists but that is a lesser tier. Switch 2 will be the highest so therefore should support all modes.
My God. You used to insist that the Switch Lite couldn't exist, didn't you?

Don't you know that saying it's impossible is just like willing it into existence?

You know, the things is, even after the happening in March, this thread isn't done. It's not like Nintendo will share any deep dive tech details. ^^

You are correct, but that will still make the discussion far more exciting. Its been a very long road with a lot of the discussion going in circles for over a year now. We probably wont know the process for T239 until after it launches and a teardown is done. Clock speeds may leak ahead of time, and that should give us some insight.

* Hidden text: cannot be quoted. *

If there is some additional or enhanced feature with the new joy con (which I am fairly confident there will be because Nintendo likes to experiment with non-traditional controls), whether it's refined haptic feedback or the addition of touch surfaces, then they will pack them in since they will want to market games that use these features.

Even if there weren't, they're packing them in. It's been said a million times in this roller coaster of the last couple of pages, but not including the detachable wireless controllers in the base model breaks the hybrid presentation and is a clunky regression from their elegant product design. I'm honestly surprised this speculation has gained this much traction. Every recent page has had many a well-written post on why this would be a bad idea.

Absolutely. I love how they started off the podcast. It is always worth taking a moment to recognise just how incredible the Switch 1 has been so far. I also love their point that 2023 is low-key a candidate for best year of the Switch. Definitely some arguments to be made in favour of that.

If we know the battery life, the size of the device and the clocks, we can pretty much infer the node. At least we can rule out/ confirm 8nm.

There's a small chance they're going with a process that's not 4nm or 8 nm. That's harder to nail down.

BTW: A March reveal means production likely starts near the end of this month and beginning of next. A normal 6 month lead time gives us roughly a September release.

Yup - an announcement/reveal usually is in near proximity to the begin of mass production (has been true for orig Switch and Switch OLED).

But curious what the significance is for starting mass production close to end of month instead of other weeks of the month?

None really. Just that we could sort seeing factory leaks before the month is up.

I expect mass production to start at the end of lunar new year holidays in Asia, which puts it from mid to late February.

This is the HAT-001 Switch 1 devkit (prototype). No joy-con rails. It's a creature.

Source.

We have no idea what the Switch 2 devkits look like and their various iterations, especially if they're being shipped to devs over the course of a year, correct me if I'm wrong. It's possible some could resemble the above, others could have bolted on controls, others could resemble the final retail unit.

The last time they kept the same branding moving from one console gen to the next, it didn’t go too well for them 😜

Well, since everyone and their mother is believing more and more that the Switch reveal will be in March, when in March do we think will be the time?
February

More seriously, I have some significant doubts that the initial reveal itself would leak unless it's basically a full Direct. Seems more likely that what would leak would be a follow up presentation to detail things more.
