StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

IF the pre-order chatter is true, I could see a reveal-release happening in the span of 3 to 4 months:
Early February: We get confirmation from the horse's mouth that the next-generation is coming this year, with a new 3D Mario, through a press release.

March 3rd-5th: First look at Nintendo Switch 2, it's more Nintendo Switch, at $399, with a new Mario, Elden Ring, RDR2, and look, an Ocarina of Time remake! Release date: June 20th, 2024

April: Commercials and slight info drops almost every single day, incluinding small details on the new 3D Mario. Rumors of upcoming games start to spread.

May 9th: We get our Nintendo Switch 2 presentation and the full reveal of the new 3D Mario ($70) and Nintendo Land-esque game (Launch titles), Metroid Prime 4 (October), OoT remake (2025), Monolith Soft next game (No date) and cross-gen Pokémon game (November 2024, edit*) . We also get confirmation of GTA V (Launch title) and GTA VI (Simultaneous release), Elden Ring (August), RDR2 (Late 2024), Call of Duty 2024 (Simultaneous release), FFXIV and FFXVI (Early 2025) and Resident Evil 1, 2, 3 & 4 remake collection (2025, $80 and 100GB on one cartridge).

June: At the start of the month we get our previews for the console and the new 3D Mario. During not-E3 season, publishers will be able to confirm their titles are coming to Nintendo Switch 2; Nintendo's social media account will use these announcements as a Twitter Direct: Partner Showcase, to increase hype for the console's imminent release. The launch week comes, and with it, the new 3D Mario will receive loads of praise, especially because of it's graphics and fast and fluid gameplay, thus getting a secure spot on everyone's Game of the Year debate.

IF the pre-order chatter is true, I could see a reveal-release happening in the span of 3 to 4 months:
Not an unreasonable timeline and a good write up overall, but that if is currently holding up the weight of the sky. I do think we're gradually pointing to a May-July release, but it's still a bit brave of an assumption overall. Eh fuck it, hopium is fine in small doses.

Not always. How different might things be today if PSP hadn't pressured Nintendo into releasing the DS.
The point I'm making use they will release what they want and what they offer won't change that. Nintendo is always working on new hardware concepts.

As soon as next week and as late as end of March... March being the timeline I said last year following Gamescom.

It covers too wide of a range and feels that the source is hedging bets on an unannounced Direct, investor report and then using the FY ending (and maybe even my info) to give a window of expectation.

To be fair, you said you heard that March was a talking point amongst developers at Gamescom, but never brought forward additional details on why March was a topic of conversation.

Translation for those who don't know Spanish:
"You can't imagine the amount of information I'm receiving about Switch 2. Some of them truly grotesque.

It's difficult to filter between so many things to tell you about Nintendo next console and this last week they have increased extremely"

It's bullshit, I'm sure. He always acts like this, saying that he has a lot of information which will be known soon but never says anything concrete, and when he does it ends up not being true. I can't stand this type of fake leakers, really.

he seen so full of himself, after he predicted Metroid 5, got it right and now he claiming baseless information, trohw everything in hopes of sticking

Getting off of my lurkers' cave for the first time to say I'm excited for the possibility of this device having 16GB of RAM. While 12 would likely be enough for a handheld/hybrid until the end of the decade and beyond, 16 would not only give it parity with the big 4K TV consoles (making ports and multiplat releases of memory-hungry current gen games easier), but would also allow for OS features such as longer recording times and real time streaming, with neither the need of additional hardware nor significantly impacting the available memory for games.

Plus we all know how Nintendo always manages to work wonderfully with their hardware. I really can't imagine what they'll be able to achieve with all that memory alongside all the other improvements we expect. If they play their cards right, the next Switch can last even longer than the current one, especially since diminishing returns have caught up to the big TV-only consoles, as many here have said before.

With UE5 responding nicely to hardware ray tracing and DLSS upscaling, and RT cores and tensor cores being part of the T239, it seems like Nintendo could play the long game and focus on hardware longevity. With the current Switch soon entering its 8th year on the market with no announcement of a successor, I feel like it's reasonable to expect the successor to have a 10+ year life cycle as Nintendo's main system.

I read tweets from this guy since 2018 and he is the spanish samus hunter. I remember that before all his fake leaks tweets ended with "....👀" lol
Amateur hour
everyone knows you're supposed to end a leak with "😉"

Well...What if I told you this website was monitored by both Wallstreet insiders and to a lesser degree, SEC personnel?
Wallstreet and the SEC reading my shitposts was not the bombshell I expected to wake up to today
What we do here isn't illegal of course
Have you seen my shitposts..?

I saw this being talked about yesterday so I wasn't sure if anyone had any more insight or anything but what is the expectation for when pre-orders for this console to be revealed? A while back I thought about this and I initially came down to it would be revealed in March and then after they do their larger reveal event (if they do one for this console), that would be when it would be available for pre-order, similar to the Switch? I guess the only assumption I'm making here is they would do a first look first opposed to coming out of the gate with a presentation for the console?

I'm only really familiar with how long it took from it being shown off to pre-orders opening for the more recent consoles so I apologize if this is a question that seems smaller relative to the larger discussion everyone is having. I assume we'll have a clearer picture after Nintendo's first communication about this hardware (in March?)! :)

Well, it wasn't very difficult to predict that because both Metroids were a known secret in the Spanish game dev sphere.

I know GameFreak doesn't usually jump into the next generation of devices, but shouldn't they have had a dev kit since forever?

Why even give them a dev kit if they're just gonna let it collect it dust?

Honst question

Gamefreak might've had a development kit for a while - even if they aren't making a jump right away it's not like it isn't a valuable asset. The more time they have with it the better even if it's just for testing. They might even release the next game on both platforms rather than it just be backwards compatible.

I kind of believe this will be different, because it's an iteration of the Nvidia dev environment they're already using. The learning curve shouldn't be as steep, at least if your ambition is just to get the game running. Sure, Ampere has a ton of new features, but they're not mandatory to use.

relax, they monitor most of the internet. The only thing they look for is price manipulation through “organized trading”. Even that is a legal grey area. Forums and discords are usually where that happens but none of that happens here.

And wall street dudes just look for insider information like YouTubers. No difference there. The difference between me and them is I am a fan first. Trader second.

I mean....they released a mainline Pokemon game on the DS after the 3DS came out. I don't think learning curve is a good argument. And if there is BC then all the more reason to keep their games on the Switch 1 until 2025.

I got got and told to shut the fuck up. Right before all the smoke happens too. It’s gonna be a fun next few months. I’ll be watching and cheering in spirit and occasionally shit posting.
and so ends the long and elaborate fantasy

although if I were wrong it would be even more amusing, so kudos either way, lol

GF starts on the next gen as soon as the latest game is done. so Gen 10 was in development since the year of SV's release. and it's more thank likely running on Drake, so they're not letting it sit unused

besides, the sooner they get a dev kit, the sooner they can make games for it. if they waited, we wouldn't see a Drake Pokemon until much later

Technically this was already announced for the Switch in the PlayStation State of Play, but I thought Nintendo typically likes to wait until Directs to promote cross-platform titles.

Are there any other notable third party games Nintendo is promoting which release after this summer? As far as I can tell their first party release schedule halts some time in the summer with the releases of Luigi's Mansion 2 HD and Paper Mario TTYD. All of this suggesting the next set of first party releases will be in Autumn on the new system.

A question I've recently had looking back at the Wii U gamepad, would nine-axis gyroscopes be too big for next-gen Joy-Cons potentially? It could be the perfect solution to those Wii ports that uses the gyro for (often inaccurate) pointing.

I think this is more like when Xbox announced Persona ports and they had a 48 hour exclusive window before other platforms could advertise. I would assume the same in this case.

True, but I do want to mention that those Persona ports were shown in a Japan Direct (afaik the direct was mainly the same as the western ones except for a few games including the Persona ones). I've got reason to believe that this port could and would have been shown in a normal direct if:
A: Nintendo had the space for this announcement
B: Nintendo is doing a direct

Just my two cents.

Yea I agree they won't jump ship from the Switch gen for a while, I was just talking in relation to get a dedicated Switch 2 version up and running.

No, it's all of maybe two ICs.

Assuming they make another entry to the Legends sub franchise, I wonder if it'll be made just for Switch, cross gen or Switch 2

I have no idea why I thought it's size was akin to something like full pro controller joysticks, which can't fit. That only leaves me with the question of why it wasn't implemented in the first Switch
Price optimisation. They needed to fit two of these controllers into a low enough price to bundle them with EVERY system. Nearly every bit of savings Nintendo makes from the price optimisations of Nintendo Switch Lite is to do with Joy-Con's complexity. Being able to exclude one part most people wouldn't notice (magnetometer IC), which on Wii U still wasn't good enough to avoid recalibration, when you're producing HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS... The math works out. Pennies matter in quantities of a million.

I feel that manufacturing on this should be a less major transition than it was from Wii U to Switch. It's a tablet with rails for controllers. It's not like there's a lack of expertise in that in the world. This is a Switch with a new motherboard and screen. From some aspects it's a just a new revision. The only real question is if they find problems in early units. This feels like something where manufacturing could ramp up to a large number of units per month pretty fast.

Oldpuck went into detail how manufacturing processes work going from prototype stage to beta product to mass production etc. Unfortunately I cannot find the post because I don't think I can search his former "deleted member" comment history.

(edit: Found the post - bookmarked it this time)

If Switch 2 is similar to Switch (rails, tablet design, etc), that would probably help a bit in the planning/design phase.

But I don't think this would help reduce the manufacturing process. It's still different parts, different processes, different screws, etc. They have to do test/practice assembly runs, just like they did for SWOLED and Switch Lite. Gotta find the right amount of efficiency before they can officially begin mass production.

Lurker Here. I am wondering about what past patents ( patents file before the switch release) could appear on the switch 2? I think that some sort of feature or gimmick would help the marketing of the switch 2 as long it does not take too much resources from the power of the switch 2.

if Legends 2 exist, it's before Gen 10 and probably started after Legends Arceus launched. I'm expecting a game this year that's not Gen 10 and to still be on Switch. 2025 could either be another game that's cross-gen, or Gen 10 that's fully Drake

As a general rule, if it's a public patent they didn't end up using it. There are rare exemptions, but as a rule the patent that are actually used, are made public after the reveal.

I agree, even though older patents (pre Wii U/3DS) have a serious chance to be used (the Switch concept goes back to a GameCube era patent).

Digital Foundry put up their review of Suicide Squad and has some interesting measures, particularly how it achieves 60fps. the game uses FSR2 Performance in all systems as well as Tier 1 VRS at quarter res. the game can have surfaces rendering as low as 40p (yes, double digits). Series S is 900p average, 450p internally, and some surfaces being 225p

I feel like we forgot about VRS as a scaling tool, but probably because it doesn't work well when your internal res is already so low. but all modern gpus have options for hardware accelerated VRS, so that's something Nintendo could leverage
