What if the Switch 2 is the last announcement in the next Direct?
Not sure they'd want to overshadow all their announcements with the next system. Every other system/revision announcement has happened a month or so after a Direct iirc, so it seems unlikely.

How would a Switch 2 announcement in a Direct overshadow everything anymore than a big announcement would? TOTK overshadowed everything in the last few Directs before it released and Nintendo didn't care.

But when's Hyrule Warriors 3 tho?

I want to see how Koei Tecmo fleshes out the faceless, nameless, backstory-less, and personality-less prehistory Sage characters from TotK

They are gonna give 'em the Hyrule Warriors Impa glow up treatment, I can feel it in my bones
i suprised, Nintendo/Koie Tecmo has not done a Hyrule Warriors based on the Tears of the Kingdom Imprisioning War

I laughed more than I should have over this xD

But if you subtract faceless and nameless, you can pretty much include all of the original characters from TOTK. Nevermind the Koume and Kotake from one of the cutscenes.

---------

Forget about Zelda Warriors, give us either Dissidia Warriors or KINGDOM HEARTS Warriors

I don't think 2 things are comparable, there's a reason why the revisions were announced after Directs. TotK is way less of a big deal than a new system and a new console needs way more marketing. Sure, TotK was a big deal but it didn't make games like Pikmin, Splatoon, XBC3, etc look like old news for an old system - it was still on the same system. The Switch 2 is gonna need it's own games announced as well and those would make the games in the same presentation look like old news.

You don't spend an entire direct talking about Switch 1 games to then say "btw forget all those here's the new sexy thing which will get it's own games" and leave people asking questions. If Nintendo is showing off Switch 2 in the next direct, they're either starting with it, or they introduce it at the half way point and have a clear divide between the Switch 1 part of the show and the Switch 2 part.

That was my guess for the badge challenge ostensibly. Announce the thing, show off one or two games briefly, and then say the full reveal is coming in June. I’m currently guessing the console releases in September so it’d be about a six month lead up.

I think the Switch 2 reveal will be within the week following Princess Peach Showtime’s release. Nintendo is no stranger to releasing news soon after major game releases, kind of like the Sept 2022 Direct closely following Splatoon 3, the Feb 2021 Direct closely following SM3DW+Bowser’s Fury, and the Mar 2020 Mini Direct closely following Animal Crossing (obviously the circumstances were a bit different but I might as well include it). IIRC, the Sept 2023 Direct aired a day after the release of Pokémon SV DLC1, so they’re clearly fine with positioning news showcases right after releases.

Anyway yeah, with this “pattern (but not really)” in mind, I think a reveal the week after Peach is pretty likely for the next console.

Yeah, personally I hated both Zelda musous. Only characters I care about in LoZ series are Link and Zelda and everyone else felt useless as hell.

We need franchises with tons of great characters to have musous of.

Final Fantasy should be on top of that list. Insane amount of melee brawlers in the series both on hero and villain side.
Tales should be another! Namco did try their own Tales musou on PSP but it didn't turn out to be good. Omega should correct this wrong.
And there are tons of anime series that could use musou tie-ins. Chainsaw Man? Vinland Saga? Dr. STONE?
I know it's like super impossible but the real dream is Omega/Koei getting the Star Wars/Lord of the Rings licenses. I simply drool over the idea of musou games for both...

Talking about third party games, what do want for next direct?. Mine are:

  • Mass Effect Legendary Collection (EA)
  • Final Fantasy Tactics remaster (Square-Enix)
  • Dragon Quest III 2D-HD (Square-Enix)
  • Nier Reincarnation (Square-Enix)
  • Marvel Vs Collection/Ultimate MvC3 (Capcom)
  • Devil May Cry 4/Reboot Special Edition (Capcom)
  • Tomb Raider Reboot Trilogy (Embracer)
  • Mafia Trilogy (Take-Two)
  • GTAIV/Midnight Club LA Remaster (Rockstar)
  • Dark Souls II/III (From Software/Bandai-Namco)
  • Castlevania DS Collection (Konami)
i want nier replicant 🤩

Longtime Lurker, first time poster, finally joining! I'm here for Fire Emblem!

If I was Nintendo I'd keep Fire Emblem 4 Remake for the Switch 2 as a crossgen release, the Switch got Engage a year ago and FE Warriors 3H 1.5 years ago so it's not like the Switch is in dire need of FE games right now.

Of course I'd still be happy to have one and I'd be there for it as I love the IP, and if it's as beautiful as Engage it's gonna be wonderful but it'd seem so early to me, and if it means no Fire Emblem game exclusive to Switch 2 till 2026 or 2027 I'd prefer them to put FE4R on Switch 2 as an exclusive but I'm aware it's unlikely as it's been rumored for years so it's probably too advanced in its development on Switch to change hardware, at best it'll be cross-gen but if it's a May release it also won't happen

If I was Nintendo and IntSys, I think I'd use the backup of games to try and have a Fire Emblem game or spinoff every year. Between two IntSys teams (I think) and KT, there should be enough manpower to have at least two teams at a time working on FE while the third team does Paper Mario or Warioware.

it'll be interesting to see if Koei Tecmo is involved in the next one like with FE3H and if they intend to do a Fire Emblem Warriors Engage as well
Going off of the above, I firmly believe that we'll get a Genealogy Warriors before we get a proper FEW sequel. Genealogy is one of the few FE games outside of Fodlan where it'd make sense in-world as well as for the gameplay (Holy Blood and Holy Weapons are busted), and FE has several fun "what if" scenarios that'd make great branching-off points. Hopefully it'd be something like:
2024 - Genealogy Remake (IntSys team that worked Paper Mario: The Origami King)
2025 - Genealogy Warriors (KT)
2026 - New FE Game (IntSys team that worked on Engage)
2027 - FE Warriors 2 (KT)
2028 - New Game or Elibe Remake (IntSys team that was working on either Genealogy Remake or the previous Paper Mario/Warioware game.)

If they announce it in a non-specialist Direct, it’ll be in the middle bit where yer man pops back up on the red background and goes “That was the trailer for the Kirby Skateboarding Extreme game. We hope you look forward to it’s release. Next, we would like to share with you some news about forthcoming hardware”

I'm unsure if I'd be more interested in the game or the console.

Well your username isn’t Nintendoswitchsuccessorfan407
Yeah, true...but genuinely, I feel like that game title inspires my imagination more and feels way less inevitable than Switch 2. Switch 2 is basically guaranteed to happen at some point and my purchase of it is similarly guaranteed, but the odds of Kirby Skateboarding Extreme happening at any point seem so low. All I'm saying is, you picked a good one and now I hope I see something like it soon.

That's what I have been saying. Nintendo has a chance to pull off the greatest "one last thing" in Nintendo Direct history.

I give it a 10% shot at best of happening, but it would've been awesome.
Wait, who said the new thing for Switch 2 should be having the host snap with both hands?

That would be so rad, "But we have one more thing to show. Please take a look at this." and then they give a knowing look to the camera and raise both hands and do two snaps 😎

I’m going to be increasingly sad if we just get a random press release “yes we have new hardware” drop now. We’re all painting such a powerful vision here lol.

In terms of things I want from this Direct from Nintendo outside the titles we know, FZero GX and Metroid Prime 2/3 HD remasters would be high up my list.

I bet the often rumoured WW/TP ports will come next year to fill in any gaps

I dont think there's really much I can think of for what I want to see in 2024's first direct aside from any FE news.

Tho the one thing I do want is for Nintendo to break precedent and do a January Direct instead of the traditional February :>

I bet the next Nintendo Musou is Xenoblade Warriors with the xenoblade trademark renewed a while ago.
The Xenoblade trademark is likely related to the Noah and Mio amiibos.
Also, we might be getting a Mario Warriors game due to Grubb hearing about that again recently.

...I want a Sonic Warriors.
holy shit

that's actually not a bad idea

it'd be one of the few times having the humongous cast of side characters would make sense and not be a distraction to the gameplay.

Weekly Questions Week 2
We have officially made it through our first week of the Nintendo Direct Speculation thread! The holidays are behind us and everyone interested is signed up for our badge challenge (double check you were added if you haven’t!), so with that we are fully focused on speculation and being on the look out for and being prepared to interpret whatever signs may appear. Before I present this week’s question, I do want to announce I do plan to reset the poll soon so make sure you have sworn allegiance to your team of choice by let’s say 4:00 PM Friday afternoon Pacific Time just to be safe. I plan to record the results, so the poll reset will either be that night or a tad later in the weekend.

Here’s our next weekly question then:

Week 2 - What’s going on with Donkey Kong in 2024 and beyond?

I’ll put my own answer in an ispoiler:
I think this is the year we’ll finally get a new Donkey Kong game. It’s been ten years since Tropical Freeze and the theme park expansion is nearly here. A DK game has long been rumored and I think this is the year we’ll finally see and play it. Beyond just theme park synergy, DK is a big enough franchise to sell well even with a console launch on the horizon and will continue to sell well even after the Switch 2 releases so it’s a good fit to come out ahead of time.

Beyond that, I think we’ll see Donkey Kong 64 and/or Diddy Kong Racing hit NSO+ this year. I’m leaning towards DK64 for sure since it is a bigger adventure and directly features Donkey Kong. I wouldn’t be surprised to see other Donkey Kong games hit NSO, but they have been spacing out games well to make the services last so I don’t think we’ll see all of them.

...I want a Sonic Warriors. Also TotKs plot wouldn't allow a AoC like scenario, they'd have to really really stretch it to make it work.
Yeah, that's what they did with AoC and they weren't really concerned with it working or not.

Movie + park.... New Donkey Kong confirmed ! :p

wait wait wait whoa

that last bit though

"According to V Scooper, Nintendo would not be convinced yet, prioritizing other projects such as Star Fox"

Meaning prioritizing Star Fox for a game or for an adaptation????

cuz yall, if we get a Star Fox movie I'm gonna do a fuckin barrel roll

I didn’t think when I picked all of the weekly questions ahead of time, we’d get an immediate update on DK the day I dropped it lol.

Can't wait for the Star Fox movie to be another retelling of the first game.
I would be fine with this

The team's descent into Corneria under siege could be so incredible if done right.

Oh god the dogfights could be so rad

That's something I really missed from the Star Wars prequels/sequels (there was a bit but not enough) and I swear to dog if the movie that ends up scratching my "old school spaceship dogfights" itch is an adaptation of goddamn StarFox then I would reach enlightenment

It needs a trick where Kirby eats the skateboard in midair and you become the skateboard itself for the rest of your allotted time. Nintendo hire me.

On a serious note, the fact that they're not convinced about a movie with Donkey Kong makes me wonder if there will be a game....
If I had to guess I'd say the rumor might simply mean they aren't convinced by the pitch Illumination has given so far, probably nothing to do with Ninty's confidence in DK overall (especially where their own game dev is concerned). The fact that they're building DKC at the theme parks tells me they have confidence in DK, so I'd be shocked if there wasn't a game being prepped as we speak.

The big question for all 2D platformer franchises Nintendo has is how they stand apart from 2D Mario and in a way that is interesting to consumers.

We’ll see if EPD or someone else figured out a way to make DK stand out with a unique selling point (or points) that Mario Wonder doesn’t have.

DKC has stood apart from every single 2D Mario game and still has. There’s nothing to “figure out”

DK will continue to make better 2D games than Mario but review worse because of the anti ape agenda we see in the industry. But he will be fine.

WHENEVER HE DECIDES TO SHOW UP THAT IS

Ngl, Star Fox does seem like it has a lot of potential for a Saturday morning cartoon-type series, but I wouldn't mind a full 3D movie. Hell, I'd be happy to see... anything done with Star Fox at this point.

Week 2 - What’s going on with Donkey Kong in 2024 and beyond?
Well, Donkey Kong is certainly popular right now. It's kinda surprising how dormant of a series he was, but I kinda look forward to some more games in the following years.

IIRC, a DK game is in the works and is fairly close to release, I even saw some people saying it'll be the launch title for the Switch 2, but idk about that. I think it's going to be a launch year release. Hopefully it's another Country game or maybe even another move into 3d platformers for DK.

There's also the case of DK getting a movie which, knowing Seth Rogan, he's probably campaigning like crazy for that. Not that I can blame him, he was actually kinda fun in the Mario movie. I'd be happy to see that.

Finally there's "beyond". There's obviously stuff like Mario Sports and Mario Kart for everyone's favorite ape to return, but I am sorta curious as to how far Nintendo is going to go with it. Hell, another Diddy Kong Racing game would be actually kinda neat. I wouldn't mind seeing a co-production with Rare at some point if Nintendo and Microsoft can agree to do it. Lots of possibilities, but my only real hard expectations are "DK Game", "DK Movie" and "Mario side-series featuring DK".

DK is for people that are good at platformers, Mario is for everyone... which is why I personally prefer the latter by a wide margin

That aside, I'm not sure if we'll see any more of DK this year apart rom the Mario vs Donkey Kong remake. Maybe some VC-release, DK64 seems overdue. Mainly because I'm just not sure who would have developed a new game coming out this year, Retro is busy with Prime 4, the one Mario team just released Wonder and the other was probably busy to get a new 3D Mario out around launch of the new console. Maybe some wild card... or we're getting a new 3D DK for launch window of the new console :D
