• Hey everyone, staff have documented a list of banned content and subject matter that we feel are not consistent with site values, and don't make sense to host discussion of on Famiboards. This list (and the relevant reasoning per item) is viewable here.

StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

All this Switch software talk has a place, and this thread is not it

Is some kind of optimized frame interpolation possible on a hardware level?

Like what many TVs kinda do with their motion smoothing settings, usually for movies, but way more efficient and calibrated for supported games.
The most obvious example would be frame interpolation to make 30fps games visually run at 60fps while keeping, of course, the game logic and input detection at 30fps.
Sub-30fps and unstable games could still be an issue and I don't think that could work properly for them, but the point would be to "easily" make a lot of 30fps games look and feel better without requiring a specific patch from their developers.

The PC port of Ocarina of Time for instance does that, it allows for much higher framerates but keeps the gameplay and logic at their original 20fps and it feels great.

I'm not sure whether it could be achieved on this new hardware but as there's been talk about it's AI features (for DLSS but possibly other stuff too), this came to mind and I feel like it could be an amazing way to handle a "boost" mode for a lot of stable 30fps games; which I think are pretty common on Switch.
Of course that could also be used for next gen games that can't natively hit 60fps too.
That's what FSR3 is. Don't expect it to be usable on consoles outside of esoteric situations

Not to be a party downer, but i agree with Feet. Back to hardware and rumors and bird songs about hardware.

And dad jokes.

* knock knock *
Hello sir, we're the anti dad jokes brigade, I'd like you to come with us

ay-and-date multiplats with current gen Playstation and Xbox consoles represents a vanishingly small slice of the expected Switch 2 library. I think most consumers expect something along the lines of the Switch library - Nintendo games look great, last gen ports that look as good or better as the originals, and a few current gen miracle ports will be extremely cut down, but it will be amazing just to play them both on your TV and in your hand.

This is interesting, would love to get more details on your thoughts on this. So from my very limited understanding, it sounds to me like the NG GPU is going to be better placed compared to current gen versus where Switch 1's GPU was compared to last gen right? (I might be misremembering what people have been saying!)
As for memory, it seems decently likely NG will have as much memory as Series S has, if not more.

The NG CPU however will have a bigger gap compared to current gen, versus Switch 1 compared to last gen, is this the bottleneck you expect to prevent most current gen multiplats from reaching the NG, bar the occassional "miracle port"? Or is the bottleneck you're expecting elsewhere? If CPU is what you were thinking of, do we know that current gen games are generally using all/most of the Series S CPU capactiy for critical game logic tasks? I haven't played any current-gen only games yet so I don't know but am interested to find out! Is it more NPCs or something? Or is the CPU necessary for more than just game logic, in which case I'm looking in the wrong place for the bottleneck?

Basically, I'm just interested to hear where you think the bottleneck(s) will be that limits current-gen multiplats to just the occassional "miracle port" like it has been for Switch 1. Thanks!

No offence taken, gaming pal. If you apply this same level of critical thinking to other posts in the thread then I foresee you will go far.
This little bit about critical thinking feels mildly condescending but whatever

If MP4 is truly ready to go at this Direct (and please for the love of Lugh the Zelda ports too) then I think this is for sure the swan song of and end to the Switch era

We'll be sad to see it go, but the near-future looks bright and hopeful and full of adventure

If that means Nintendo is bringing back (at least in docked mode) a fully functional pointer that doesn't need to be manually reset every few seconds I'm going to happily get that!

EDIT beaten, I guess
That is... Not what I meant.

And I sure hope it doesn't work like that!

I, too am guilty of lurking but not posting - reading the thread has been mostly quite informative though since I joined!

Not based on anything, but I'd love a proper pointer on the Joy Con 2.

Would help with Wii HD remasters as well as aiming in general for new releases.

Game or hardware stuff? :O
Person claiming to know (some of) what's to be announced at the September Direct, which if true indicates that it's bringing the Switch era to an end as it includes the last remaining big Nintendo first-party title

Oh. Anything good or do we not know yet?
Metroid Prime 4, which is still listed as and expected to be a Switch title - I'm personally speculating that revealing it in September most likely means H1 is the Switch 2's intended release window with February reserved for another 2017 Presentation event, whereas if H2 was the release window then Metroid would be held back for a typical February Direct

Oh. That makes sense!
