StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

just think, by late 2024 the cross-gen period will be thoroughly over, and xbox might have even dropped the series s

we'll be back to hoping for miracle ports
So if I’m following you, even if it releases this year at best we would only be getting a 12-18 months of decent third party support. That doesn’t amount to many big titles, it seems like Switch 2 was never gonna be a third party haven unless it launched 2 years ago.

To clarify I don’t think if it launches now or next year will matter much, Drake seems plenty capable and a lot of developers are reaching a point of diminishing returns in terms of visuals. Plus it seems larger scope games come out once in a blue moon with half of them falling apart at the seams from being too ambitious. We’ll be getting more third parties with Drake than any other Nintendo system since the SNES.

Also Series S will live on lmaoo

At this point I just want to see how bastardized Nintendo games will end up like... This is still clearly speculation as said above and what's actually confirmed by Nate didn't told us anything that we didn't already knew. That said, the TX1 staying sounds like an absolute nightmare in every regard, might as well get Nintendo to make 2010s mobile games.

poor Pikmin 4...

Podcast didn't really answer any questions clearly. Kinda what I expected. Now we're just playing the guessing game till someone with accurate current info decides they want to say something.

Remember when in like 2021 we thought it made sense for Nintendo to discontinue the X1, as if they were gonna lose money if they kept it. We've been wanting this thing dead for years and now it might stick around for a while.

Switch sales dropped 25% last year.

It's already the longest gap between Nintendo consoles ever.

Switch will potentially be the most successful Nintendo device ever.

Drake is in production.

Developers were porting games for it.

But yeah it's cancelled we're getting something totally different with a SoC intended for an early 2023 Switch device in 2025.

Edit: Wow they really circled back to the notion that the DLSS dev kit was some phantom chip that wasn't Drake.

They are already doing it. They are bringing Nintendogs to mobile which I assume will be heavily monetized. I wonder how long until Nintendo really invests and focuses on the mobile market

Did Nate say what happened with the games that were being developed for the new Nintendo system? Didn’t he say he heard about some third party games (even an exclusive?) for it?
based on the podcast it doesn't sound like those projects got very far

I don't even trust Nate at this point, he has changed the discourse way too many times. Better to wait until the February direct.

Can’t get any worse then Pokémon scarlet and violet lol

I feel bad for having (again) thoughts of Nintendo leaving the hardware industry.
Maybe I shouldn't.
Is the Switch too successful for its own good? That could be a proper article's title. You read it here first.

The thought that this could be the largest gap between Nintendo console releases is wild (currently Famicom to Super Famicom was 7 years 4 months*) and will pass the 6 years between the Wii and Wii U launches in March.

Certainly not expected.

Nintendo can make it through 2023/ early 2024 fine. They have enough software to keep the momentum from falling off a cliff and they can start using price cuts.

OLED, you were the chosen one :(

Jokes aside, they will need a more powerful system at some point, and I don't know if the general public is going to love the idea of having "just another Switch" in 2025 as the only Nintendo console until ...2033?

At this point, the best way is to be patient and wait for.
8 years ?
T239 ready and waiting for 2 years +
Pro canceled
Too much interpretations…
Waiting for the guidelines by ninty at the last briefing ( end of Fiscal year ) is safe.
😘

Some summary about what they said would be appreciated please.
  • there were devkits for a 4K capable device
  • developers were working with it as of GDC in March 2022
  • just a few months later in the summer he heard it was shelved
  • new hardware is now up in the air, they think late 2024 to early 2025

So you’re saying Nintendo would never do something stupid? Because I absolutely think they‘d do. You always have to expect the worst case scenario. Then you won’t be disappointed

Basically it seems like they know nothing. Maybe there was a cancelation of Nintendo Hardware at some point but we don't know if it was drake, we don't know how fast (and when) Nintendo would have pivoted to the next thing. It could still happen this year, folks. There are a lot of signs pointing to it.

All we can do is wait and see. /shrug

I feel bad for third party devs.
Why? Honest question.

Third parties already have two other platform holders that strive to meet their specific needs. There's a reason why most third-party publishers, even in Japan where Nintendo dominates, focus on PC/PlayStation/Xbox as their primary market and see Switch versions of games as nice-to-haves, not must-haves.

I just hope Nintendo doesn't lose too much momentum by late 2023/2024. Nintendo has to be holding some games for the new machine so how much can Switch excite.

yeah, Nintendo is very much doing their own thing. They're irrelevant to the games industry, the games industry is irrelevant to them.

I have a feeling that TOTK has been developed with something special for the Switch 2 in mind. Whether it's two games in production at once or an upgrade with an expansion (possibly even online) coming to the Switch 2.

It will be more than a mere graphics upres remaster and provide strong incentive to upgrade.
Considering it's cross gen, I really do just expect 4k with better shadows, lighting, detail (more grass?) and increased draw distance. Hopefully 60fps and RT (the latter would bring performance down to 30fps).
