If Prime HD is due to this year, which it 99.9% will be than it's in this Direct, that also means something from Prime 4. I can't see them not showing anything from 4 when they will talk about another Metroid title and not 4.
I don’t agree. They can definitely get away with saying it’s still in development. Especially if we get MPR, BotW 2, Fire Emblem, GB/GBC on NSO, maybe a new DK game announcements. It could be saved for a Drake reveal or just a different direct.

I really don't think Nintendo would want to say once again that Metroid Prime 4 is still in-development to make way for another Metroid release, especially this time because this is for a different Prime game so they are closely related.

To clarify, Nintendo wants to remaster/remake a lot of games, not just GameCube games. I wasn't just talking about GameCube.

And they won't all release in 2022-2023. Nintendo likes to sit on finished games and sprinkle them into gaps. Basically, the same strategy they've been doing with Wii U ports since Switch's launch. So nothing has really changed. The only difference is Nintendo running out of Wii U games to re-release.

From Link's Awakening to 3D Mario All Stars, Nintendo is very big into re-selling nostalgia right now.
Lets hope F-zero Gx is one of those.

I can. I can imagine they consider that apology video way back in 2019 as enough cover for them to never have to acknowledge Metroid Prime 4 again until something tangible is ready to be shown.

If the rumours are to be believed then it looks highly likely we'll be seeing Metroid Prime HD next week, but I don't think an update on Metroid Prime 4 is therefore also automatically a given.

I know it's not technically from the exact same series, but they were perfectly happy to announce Metroid Dread last year without acknowledging Metroid Prime 4.

They did acknowledge Prime 4 though. They said it's still in development just before they showed Dread. The only question is whether or not they want to keep saying "Prime 4 is still in development" every time they release a new Metroid game. Not sure how important that is to them, but I can see them holding off on announcing the Prime remaster until they at least have something tangible to share about Prime 4.

Shinya Takahashi at E3 2021 Showcase before Metroid Dread trailer:

"Currently, we're working hard on the latest game in the Metroid Prime Series, Metroid Prime 4, which we previously announced."

A game that comes up a lot is The Last Story, seems like a good fit for the audience given the strength of JRPGs. I guess the complication with that is they'd have to get Mistwalker onboard? I can't imagine Sakaguchi saying no though.

yeah but this already happened to some degree at E3 2021 so I don't think they will do it again.

I mean they dragged Aonuma in front of the camera two times, one time for showing almost nothing new and one time for actively announcing a delay for BotW 2.

If Zelda isn't safe, Metroid absolutely isn't.

Well, Aonuma was three times. September 2020, Hyrule Warriors announcement, we will show you BOTW2 later, same in Febraury 2021 and then when delay happened. I think Aonuma is used to it at this point lol

I'm on team we see a teaser of Metroid Prime 4 when they show the Prime Remake. It might be really small, but we'll finally have something to work with.

It might not even be as much as a teaser. It could be as little as "you'll hear more on that in the coming months". Similar to what happened with BOTW's sequel when Skyward Sword HD was announced in February 2021. But I think there will at least be something tangible for certain.

That was a year and half ago. And they’ve done it more than once with a much bigger franchise with BotW 2. They can definitely “get away” with it. No one is going to go crazy if they don’t show it.

But why? Why do we want some small teaser. They game was already rebooted. If I’m Nintendo I’m not showing anything unless it’s substantial and now is not the time for it since MPR will be announced.

Three times even! Time for someone else to take the blame, Aonuma had his share.

e3 2021 is one of my favorite Direct in History (with e3 2019 close behind), just seeing a new 2D Metroid after all this time… and it being Dread, of all things ! And then after that Yoshio Sakamoto even had a short video talking about the Dread projects… It felt so good.

It made me almost as happy as the Turrican Anthology reveal at GamessCom 2020 (You will believe an old bear can cry).

Tanabe probably afraid to be on camera after the Federation Force debacle. I don’t think he’s been in a direct since he had to explain Federation Force lol

I'll be surprised if we get a teaser. Like, I'm not expecting more than a new logo/subtitle and ten second clip of non-gameplay at absolute most. Nintendo is entirely ok with keeping people in suspense and will rightly assume a Prime 4 teaser will draw all the conversation about the Prime remake - a big-budget game they're supposed to be releasing this year - away from it. Just seems wildly out of character and against all logic.

So I'm operating off of Prime 4 is going to be the holiday 2023 game so it will likely be a minute teaser that introduces some big concept to focus on (maybe a new enemy, maybe a more open world) and show off Samus' suit.

But if it is farther out, I still think we get something even if it is key concept art or some kind of statement beyond we are hard at work on it. There's a lot of value in keeping people excited for a long term prospect game (it says your platform has a long future) and I think not getting anything for a second Metroid project would make people disgruntled not just about Prime 4, but Prime Remastered the immediate thing they want to sell. That latter part is really what they have to avoid. Dread got the best pass since it still hadn't been that long since the reboot announcement and it being a brand new, long awaited game for the hardcore fans. Prime Remastered won't have exactly that even if it has a lot going for it on its own, based off what we know about it.

Emily, do you think Nintendo's intention with these, lets say larger than usual spree of remaster/remake plans is yet another indication of Nintendo wanting to keep the Switch (brand at least) around for far longer than a usual console generational cycle?

Hopefully Honne will eventually get his dream of making a new Mother game (Remake the whole series even, Ninten needs his time to shine like the rest).

I think it is really weird that we know absolutely nothing about 2023 except botw2 and the Mario Movie
Advance Wars, Prime HD and 4, TW/WW HD are all just speculation
The next Direct could be huge , I personally only need a new 3D Mario that expands on what Bowser´s Fury established

Mario 2D, Metroid 3D and Donkey 2/3D have been missing for a LONG time.
Zelda 2D should be added to this list too.

I think Star Fox is valid too given that there is a Wii U game just sat there (OK it does require a fair amount of dev work with the controls) waiting to be ported across.

What do you mean? Star Fox Adventures should be very straight forward to port over as a GameCube game

I think it’s because of Drake we know near nothing for 2023. I don’t even count Advance Wars because that was supposed to release already.

I’m sure someday we will see Golden Sun 1/2 and Mother 3 remakes.

btw, ff needs a second massive port announcement with all psp/ps3 era titles cc ffvii reunion, ff 1-6 pixel remasters, fft, ff type 0 hd, dissidia ff and ff xiii trilogy.

Crisis Core Reunion is already confirmed for Switch though

I know this goes without saying, but I truly, truly appreciate all the industry folks who spend time here helping shape conversations and expectations. It's not hype so much as it's informed speculation regarding a publisher who is notoriously reclusive with their plans.

The amount of time those folks spend here and elsewhere strictly because they want to discuss this stuff isn't unnoticed. I won't draw attention via tagging them, but just wanted to say thanks again.

speaking of final fantasy...
I am currently on a PSP nostalgia trip,
Have you guys any hidden gems that you can recommend me ?

Switch is almost six years old. As hardware gets older, Nintendo tends to play it safer, more conservative when greenlighting projects.

3DS is a good example of this. The final years of 3DS saw plenty of ports and remakes:
  • Luigi's Mansion 1
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 1
  • Majora's Mask 3D
  • Hyrule Warriors
  • Mario Maker
  • Yoshi's Crafted World
  • Captain Toad
  • Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions (remake of the DS game)
  • Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey (remake of the DS game)
That said, it's not like Switch doesn't have new games coming. We know Breath of the Wild 2 and Metroid Prime 4 are coming. We know a brand new Fire Emblem is coming. We know a DK game has been frequently rumored... (I can't personally confirm it, but I trust NateDrake).

So, I wouldn't worry about Nintendo's output consisting of only remasters and remakes. I think Nintendo will try to find a balance between new stuff and old nostalgia stuff. For the past five years, Nintendo found a balance between "new games" and Wii U re-releases.

Nintendo could go 5 years without releasing a new game for me, as long as it means I get #StarFoxAdventuresHD (Doug I know you're reading this, get on it)

I mean Star Fox has been MIA for a long time, and that's despite Star Fox Zero being available to port across from the Wii U. (Yes it would require some work, but even the most pessimistic would concede that the sales return would be more than enough).

I wouldn't want Gamecube Star Fox Adventure. I'd be very happy with a new Star Fox Adventure that combined On Rails Shooter, No Man's Sky style flying exploration, and 2D Metroid on the ground gameplay. That would be a great game.

In fact... why has Metroid never had any flying elements? Not even an Earthworm Jim style in-between levels mini game. Strange.

Anyway, back on the point... the list of MIA games is frankly confusing given the success of Switch. Covid of course plays a big part, but does it explain away all of them? I don't think so.

2D Mario
2D Zelda
3D Metroid (is at least confirmed)
Star Fox
Donkey Kong
Mario Kart

And the list of "just about due a new installment" is also growing...

3D Mario
3D Zelda (is at least confirmed)
