I have such a hard time imagining a title drop/release date for BotW 2 being dropped in a September direct. But I'm also stuck in the mindset that "big" announcements come in June because of E3.
The game will launch in 6 months or close to 8 if it's not a March game. I think it's time to start some marketing, title drop isn't that hard thing to ask for.

Gamecube will always have a special place in my heart as the first console—hell it was the first “big” purchase, period—I made using my own money from my very first job. It also introduced me to quite a few new series that I now love: Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Luigi’s Mansion, Chibi Robo, Custom Robo, etc.

On the other hand, the Gamecube entries for some of my all time favorite Nintendo franchises either severely disappointed me or were not at all what I wanted/expected. Mario Sunshine, Zelda (both WW and TP), Donkey Kong (no need to be specific lol), Kirby, Mario Kart Double Trash, Star Fox (both Adventure and Assault), Wario World, and Battalion Wars all were huge letdowns for me personally.

The Gamecube also has the distinction of being the one Nintendo console where my absolute favorite game on it isn’t from Nintendo at all, but rather from Capcom: Resident Evil 4.
A lot of the Gamecube library was a mixed bag because Nintendo rushed many of their titles to fill the gaps left by Third Parties. People now remember WW more fondly because of its artstyle but it was clearly lacking in actual content at the time of release and while the HD remaster fixed a few things, it didn't solve the core problem with the game.

And nothing would ever salvage Super Mario Sunshine aside from a full remake just like the recent HD version proved.

Do y'all think that this is the Direct where we truly know sort of everything that will be announced from Nintendo's side? Back in February, we were expecting something Fire Emblem, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3, but I don't think any of us expected nor was it leaked that we'd get Mario Strikers. Do you think at this point we still have a game like that, being a total surprise to be announced?

But c'mon, though. We already got proof positive/reminder from the likes of Emily that, yes, Nintendo DOES pay attention to social media, message boards and other places where fans congregate for feedback and other marketing purposes.

You really don't think that Nintendo didn't take note of, for example, how much Command and its various (bad) endings were meme'd on, how Krystal was made a posterchild of these "bad furry drama" takes, and so forth? Then wouldn't take the option to snap things back to the familiar/beloved scenario of Lylat Wars at the first opportunity, in order to try and appease? Especially if they were going to try some new-fangled input method on top?

Like it's not even the stuff "conspiracies" are made out of, it just makes the most sense for what they sought to do on that end, not unlike how feedback from LoZ SS led to ALBW and BOTW.

Well... it's been kinda implied that Miyamoto apparently doesn't even care about about fan feedback that much when it comes to Star Fox.

"That’s all Miyamoto. Whenever I speak to Miyamoto about Star Fox, he says it’s not meant to be just a flying, sci-fi shooting game. It’s meant to be anything we want to think up," said Cuthbert.

"But the core fans don’t want that, but Miyamoto doesn’t really care about that. He wants to make what he wants to make, so he just goes ahead and gets it done."

Like what's been said before, if Nintendo/Miyamoto had actually cared about what fans were saying from the get go when making Zero, then they wouldn't of made it so heavily built around a weird gimmick (which has been a common criticism with SF post-64) and actually designed it like a proper SF title from the beginning lol. It wasn't until the game was announced at E3 2015 that they actually tried directly appeasing 64 fans, because they were complaining about no branching paths (the game was originally just gonna be linear like Assault)

“The biggest reason [for the delay] is that we didn’t set out to create a Star Fox game to begin with,” Miyamoto told me. “We started creating a bunch of different experiments that use the GamePad and the TV with two-screen gameplay. We started with those and introduced some of those different games.”

“What we found in making [levels] compact, the Star Fox fan really wanted something that felt more like a Star Fox game,” Miyamoto says. “They, in particular, were interested in having the map and those junction points and a game where your strategic approach through the map was really important to them. We spent a lot of time rearranging the content and building the levels in a way that took advantage of the map. We made a lot of smaller changes, as well. We changed some of the icons on the screen. We changed enemy placement and balance. We made changes for people who are maybe new to Star Fox to make the game play a little bit easier for them to understand with the heads-up display and things like that.”

Ever wonder why Zero's branching paths feel so rushed and tacked on? Here's why lol. This game really was just some weird science experiment that ended up being haphazardly retrofitted into being a Star Fox game, they tried to fix it a little at the end hence the delay but ultimately, it was too late.

There will be surprise, there always is. No one, even the most credible leaker on earth has no idea what Nintendo, or EPD in general is working on.

The Switch HD remasters that I want:

Lucifer's Mansion
Paper Cut: the Thousand Year Door
Legend of Zelda: the Wild Wanker
Metromus Prime

Star Fox doesn't need to rewrite its core gameplay - the relative success of titles like Ace Combat 7 and Star Wars: Squadrons shows that there's still room for space combat games - but it definitely needs to add 'more' to the experience for it to be worthwhile. Personally I'd add:
  • A 'home base' system where you can hang out with the Star Fox team and upgrade facilities
  • More varied mission types, and more missions overall. Maybe some repeatable 'strike' missions akin to Destiny
  • Some form of long-term progression; whether that be an XP system, or ship upgrades, or something else
  • More ways to interact with the world (e.g. weapons, abilities, and so on) that don't also slow said interaction down
  • A more obvious 'ranking' system during levels to promote higher-level play
And, most controversially, I'd just... remove the whole "replay the game and do certain things in certain levels to get new levels," system. The majority of gamers don't even finish games, let alone replay them, so having a significant chunk of your game's content locked behind replays would hurt the game more than it helped. I'd keep the "doing certain things to unlock new stuff," system, but I'd make it so players can do it all in a single playthrough, and are incentivised to do so by more than just "you... sorta can."

Star Fox genuinely has the potential to be Nintendo's main "full-action," game, but a "Star Fox 64 2," is something I just can't see working in the modern age.
Star Fox Zero already did away with the alternate paths as seen in 64 by making everything playable and replayable on one "playthrough" and moving the "route-based" gameplay to Arcade Mode (which was badly implemented but that's neither here nor there). While I think that some branching paths/timelines don't really hurt all that much if there's actual purpose to them, the days of this shit are definitely over:

Nintendo always has a surprise ready, big or small. Definitely expecting something outside of what has been leaked or rumored.

an F-Zero GX port is such a bad idea to try to give the franchise another chance

giving a franchise another chance with a remaster barely ever work, and surely not to an already niche franchise, I don't see GX selling well at all lol

Zelda and Metroid ports were already just a matter of time, am not sure if both releases indicate that Nintendo will start porting Gamecube games from now on

Fun fact about that: for Command, Takaya Imamura originally just wanted to make one single storyline like in Assault. It was Dylan Cuthbert that nudged him into writing multiple different story routes and endings, because he wanted to make it more like a 'Choose Your Own Adventure' book.

As far as story goes in StarFox Command, this time around things are very detailed. Why the addition of a full line of character back stories?

Imamura – The original concept was the one that was used in StarFox Assault, but basically we had this episode that we wanted to work on for this game. Then Dylan came up and said that he wanted to make it a branching storyline. I was writing the storyline for this game, and I said that it was too much work for me! (Laughter) We pushed each other back and forth, but Dylan wouldn’t let me NOT write it, so it became the big branching story that it is. Round 1 goes to Dylan! (Laughter)

One of Star Fox Command’s most notable legacies today is the fact that it introduced multiple endings for the player to discover, a system which Cuthbert says he lifted from popular 'Choose Your Own Adventure' books, such as the Fighting Fantasy series. "I liked the old adventure books where you would make choices and have branching paths and different outcomes, and while we were looking for a metagame framework I suggested it to Imamura-san and he ran with it, really getting into and enjoying the creation of the narratives. I think it let him be more creative and give the character development more breathing room than they normally would get with a fixed path narrative." Multiple endings added replayability to the final game and their creation clearly gave Imamura a lot of pleasure. "I remember Imamura-san was having a blast making the endings for each route," recalls Maeta. "He said that maybe the sequel could really be one of these ending episodes." His colleague Kurahashi concurs. "Imamura-san looked like he was having a great time drawing them!"

Sounds like he had the time of his life making them

Yeah. What's funny about WW is that I was a huge defender of it at the time of its announcement. I could not understand the hate for the art style. Even at the time I knew it would age wonderfully.

But then I played the game and quickly realized that it needed a little more time in the oven contentwise.

Ah, cool. I didn't know that. So Nintendo does agree with me there at least lol

Personally I would set out the structure similarly to Mario Odyssey, but with 'completing distinct levels," replacing "collecting moons in an open world," as your primary form of interaction. So, the Great Fox would dock itself above a planet, and you'd have a selection of levels both big and small to do there. With one really big, on-rails level with a boss at the end once you've done enough. After defeating the boss, you could choose to finish things up at that planet or move on to the next one. With, like Odyssey, some variation and choices to make along the way.

If we don't get a title reveal the next time we see a BOTW 2 trailer, I will buy someone in this thread a copy of WW/TP HD for Switch. I'd set up a giveaway and everything if a mod wants to mark this post lmao

What if the title is literally just "The Sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild."

What then, Dragoncaine.

What then.

Then he'll buy a physical copy, slice the game card in half so the winner can choose whether they want TP or WW.

I know that we'll have to check whether to slice the game card in half vertically or horizontal.

What if WWHD/TPHD also don't get announced?

I'd be very discouraged if a future Star Fox did away with branching paths. They're integral to the structure of the early games and I'd much rather see it evolved than done away with.

We can have some sort of Prime HD/Bayonetta 3 backup, but I would be shocked beyond belief if at least one of WW/TP HD or Prime HD are not announced in this direct.

Oh for sure. I'm mostly speaking to feeling conditioned by how these things are supposed to be announced by Nintendo.

If this Direct will be mostly Zelda focused, that'll be a boring direct for me. I know it's one of their biggest franchises, but I've never been a huge Zelda fan.

But it'll all be forgiven if we get any sort of Metroid or Mario news amidst the rest of the direct.

I think it's safe money to bet on the Metroid Remaster in this Direct at this point.

I'll take the final years of the Switch's life being one or two new titles + tons of remakes and remasters over the Wii and Wii U's final years being one or two new titles and nothing else any day.

hey as long as i still get to be a space shmuck who gets to shoot shit in space I’m open to new ideas

HOLY SHIT

My uncle just sent me some marketing material for The Sequel to The Breath of the Wild - finally revealing the name - and you're not gonna believe this:

botw2vol2.jpg

Aside from maybe starting the BotW 2 cycle with a title and maybe a window (Im guessing May) this is what I'm expecting
  • Silksong Date
  • Bayo3 trailer, Pokemon trailer
  • Zelda Twilight Princess/Wind Waker out end of September
  • Updates on Splatoon 3, Strikers, NS Sports (Date golf or shadow drop)
  • New Fire Emblem 2023
  • Batman Arkham or Mass Effect port
  • NSO Block GB/GBC
  • Metroid Prime Remakester or Advance Wars 1+2 is out in December
  • New 2D Mario out in February or March
Or maybe we get BotW2 with a switch 2/pro hardware showing at the end of the month

EDIT: Oh and probably Pixel Remasters or Tactics announcement or something from Square

The Wii U years were rough due to droughts, and Nintendo deciding early on the console was doomed causing more draughts because everything else was moved over to Switch.

Would Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 have been Wii U exclusives had the console been succesful? I was thinking of mentioning Mario + Rabbids but I think if Nintendo didn't do the Switch Ubisoft probably would'nt have been interested in developing it.

Hopefully the Golden Sun remakes drop on Switch and they save a brand new entry for the Switch 2.

(Yes, I still have hope).
I imagine the latter is contingent on the success of the former.

But Switch has a good RPG ecosystem so it seems possible. I mean, if the former actually happens.

I had a dream right before I woke up this morning that Metroid Prime 4 released. It used the Wii remote and nunchuk for some reason and graphically looked exactly like Metroid Prime 3. The opening sequence was set on Phaaze and Samus was in her Zero Suit and talked with full voice acting. On the planet were several Disney characters including Ursula and some Marvel characters like the Guardians of the Galaxy. Then I woke up.

Branching paths isn't really the issue; it's the inherently limiting fact that you have to replay the game to get to said branching paths. In the 'planets' idea above, I think having certain branching paths so there's some consequences for your performance/actions on any one planet would be great. Like with Odyssey's branching paths, but with more reason given for why you got one or the other.

I wonder who is making all those remasters. I mean for real who is making pilotwings lmao.

TP HD/WW HD - Tantalus Media/EAD
Metroid Prime Remake - Retro Studios
Pilotwings - Arzest
Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door - IntSUS
FZERO GX - Arzest
Chibi Robo - Arzest
Luigi's Mansion - Greezo with Arzest leading
Arrest making 4 Switch titles would be quite a plot twist.

I just want a combination of Adventures and Assault to be honest. I LOVED Adventures' Zelda like bits of gameplay, and I would love to combine that with Assaults' all out space battles, where you could land and take off anywhere at will. Feel like shooting stuff with your Arwing, sure let's do it! Tired of that? Land and jump into the Landmaster for tank gameplay. Or just shoot stuff with your arsenal of weapons on foot!

I would very much like a game like that.

Assault is the only Star Fox game I've played and I adore it. The multiplayer absolutely shreds too.

I'd like to be confident about a new 2D Mario as some of you are, guys. Would be a Megaton announcement to me.
