StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

Anyone knows what Nates clarity statement could mean? Maybe an annoucement in September?
it's got to be about the nikkei report specifically

that could mean Nintendo giving a statement either confirming or denying that they insinuated there was no hardware in that interview

it could also mean a report of knowledge about the supply chain on which the offhand Nikkei statement was predicated

in any case I wouldn't hold your breath for this alleged clarity lol

Russia did exactly that with the Ukraine and then invaded months later. China so far is replicating what Russia did with the Ukraine. Threatening to attack, military drills, launching bombs near them. Seems to be the same stuff here with China. Still I hope cooler heads prevail.
Russia attacked because Putin was told by his cronies that he could send his disciplinary troops over to Kiev and take over the government in 3 days. If he knew this would become an honest-to-goodness war of attrition, ruining Russian economy and political clout and uniting the West (including ex-USSR nations!) in a way that hasn't been seen for decades he wouldn't have attacked. If anything, Russia has become a cautionary tale for China's Taiwan ambitions.

Meanwhile, while Taiwan may want all-out independence, most other nations want to keep up the status-quo that has prevented war for decades: Taiwan will never become an officially independent nation (even though, in effect, it is) and China will not attempt a military invasion. It's the so-called "One China Policy": the communist China is officially China, while the democratic China isn't - but the latter remains self-governing.

If you're interested you can check out the US' stance on this in this official briefing.

This is not true. China's military isn't mobilized. Russia was mobilizing for months and had tens of thousands of troops and tanks at the border for several weeks. I believe it was actually 2-3 months but life is a blur these days.

This reeks of China posturing.

Let’s move on shall we?

I wanted to make a post a while back when the discussion of “TeraFLOPs” came into play here. A reason for why I find the discussion that focused on such a metric to be woefully useless is that it doesn’t really scale well at all, not only across different architectures but also across different cards within the same architecture. I did the math and matched the ratios:

RDNA1= 1TFLOP
Ampere= 1.3TFLOP

Turing= 1TFLOP
Ampere= 1.77 TFLOP

Maxwell= 1TFLOP
Ampere= 1.32TFLOP

GCN3= 1TFLOP
Ampere= 0.93TFLOP

GCN1= 1TFLOP
Ampere = 1.25TFLOP

GCN1 = 1 TFLOP
Ampere = 1.7TFLOP

GCN1 = 1TFLOP
Ampere = 1.15TFLOP

The last two and two different cards within the same family of Ampere, and how it correlates.

If you want to do any comparison worth your time, I suppose you could say that the modern architectures are more “Flop efficient” and more memory efficient than the old FLOPs and memory bandwidth of the older machines.

And that’s it I guess lol, simply by virtue of being newer :p.

PC comparisons aren’t that helpful for this as it’s based on a an evolving platform vs a fixed platform. Games today that perform decent will perform better or worse 5 years down the line based on driver updates or how games are made.

For example, the Tensor Cores can do FP16 calculations at a better rate than the CUDA cores, but a game will not really utilize this if they are not made to utilizes. Of course they are used for the DLSS feature that is expensive to the RTX cards, but I hope this makes it more clear why comparisons between an evolving platform whose status now is different from its status later on cannot be applied 1:1 for a console that is a fixed status and will remain as such until its end of life date.

Games that released on PC were made for graphics cards released before then but games released in the next 10 years will take advantage of the graphics cards that are here and now. Of course there will be updates to make the car to work better, but kings are designed to work better with the latest architectures have yet to be seen imo.

And the fixed nature of the Nintendo system, the Xbox system and PlayStation system means not only do they have a fixed platform that developers know how it will function at all times, but also said fix platform can have alterations done to the ports for that specific device if need be that you wouldn’t find on PC.

It’s why something like GTX 750 or 760 back then was comparable to a PlayStation 4 but later on a GTX 1050 is what is preferred as actually comparable to the PlayStation 4 in terms of performance.

These are not really easy comparisons for measuring flops across different architectures from dramatically different time periods that function very different from different companies with different developers and different mindsets and approaches.

However, I do not expect something newer to perform worse than something that is older by like 8-10 years or so. That’s regression and this industry doesn’t aim for that!

Unsure if my point is really clear!

I'm no military of or history expert but I always figured when a country is making very vocal and overt threats that they actually have no desire to follow through on those anytime soon. If they were preparing an invasion they wouldn't be advertising it so loudly, right?
Just to throw two cents in, the term your looking for is sabre-rattling

Breaking news: for the unaware, Spider-man has debut on PC and has graphical goodies at its disposal.

Most notably, it has FSR 2.0 and DLSS…. along with it is Insomniac Games’ Temporal Injection.

This is a solution that was exclusive to only the PlayStation platform and developed by Insomniac Games, and this is a really good temporal solution. DF considers it the best temporal anti aliasing in the industry if that’s any consideration.

Now, you may be asking yourself “why are you talking about a PlayStation game and a PlayStation borne tech feature in a Nintendo tech thread “, hush you. The reason I’m bringing it up is for the academic purposes of observing how this actually compares to DLSS and FSR2, what benefits does it have or drawbacks that has compared to DLSS and FSR2.0.

The image quality and performance gains are going to be the most useful in this comparison between the three.

What’s more surprising is that the feature made its way to the PC release tbh. Allows better or more intricate ways to study this Upsampling method.

the most interesting thing about Spiderman is its scalable RT level. from 1:1 resolution to 1:2 and 1:4, RT draw distance, and RT level of detail. I've been telling folks that RT is very scalable and I think this will show just that. maybe even the 6400 XT can run this!

So what new hardware features would all of you like to see in the next Nintendo hardware that isn't in the Switch?
Take the switch dock, right.

Give it a little something for receiving signals, aka make it a dongle of sorts. Or make the dongle a separate purchase idk….

Anyway….

Cast to the dock, who displays to the TV.

All processing power happens in the portable tablet in your hands.

If it has an OLED, make it so the screen would dim after a minute or turn off if it’s displaying on the TV. Lights the screen up again by simply tapping it. Can be altered in the submenu/ system settings. Or it depends on the game, will explain below:

While the screen is being cast to the TV, the Switch device itself would function like a big controller.

Some games would be different, for something like Mario Maker, the screen would be on and you can edit and do things which can be seen on the big display.

For others, it functions more like a second screen for a map or other menu options, can or would be dimmed rather than always be on.

For some other games, the screen is intentionally black. If the game requires you to swipe on the casted screen, you simply swipe on the touch screen and where you swipe lights up like a trail so you know that you touched it. But this would be more like a giant Touch Pad in a sense.

If a developer doesn’t feel like using the second screen like that at all, it is just black and doesn’t really do much unless tapped and it displays what you are casting above to your hands, the switch itself becomes a gamepad controller console thing.

“What’s different between this and the Wii U?” People actually like the switch, that’s what’s different. Giving the flexibility is what’s interesting. The ones that bought the Wii U exist here on the forum, you know who you are! All 1000 of you!

If a person chooses to play in handheld mode but wants to cast it to a TV, they have options. If they don’t want to use that and just want to play as a portable and they can do so. If they just wanna play docked mode then they can do so and it’ll give them a higher quality image.

It does not aim to detract from the existing features. Aka, it doesn’t do motion controls and then go to fisher price tablet. It takes current tablet, makes it the focus, and introduces a different way of doing the same thing.

Uh, that’s it I guess.

So what new hardware features would all of you like to see in the next Nintendo hardware that isn't in the Switch?
First thought of mine although it might be a pipe dream is that I'd love the 3d effect to come back. I absolutely loved it on the 3DS!

The "reverse Wii U" idea that some of you have recently come up with piques my interest. When you cast to the dock > TV that actually sounds pretty sweet because it allows for asymmetrical gameplay, dual screens, and whatever else.

In addition, I want to see haptic feedback in the controller/joycon or some kind of new input innovation. Something similar to the dualsense but with a nintendo twist. It just has to work on both the "pro controller" version and the split joycon versions if they keep those.

I feel that the L and R shoulder buttons need to evolve, finally. My idea is that you make each of them like a sideways mousewheel just a bit thicker and more comfortable.

I could imagine one could roll them to cycle weapons or spells in RPGs and also press them in like a button, can also be pressed while they're being rolled for even more input options.

I get frustrated in games like Mario sometimes because when you need to adjust the camera you can't jump for example unless you "claw" since you have to use your right thumb. If you could use (R) and (L) for control of the X and Y axis of the camera without having to touch the right stick, you would have total control of your character AND the games perspective at all times. 😊

Moreover, they allow you for example to make quick selections/weapon wheel/shifting gears without taking your thumb off the left stick to use the d-pad since that's pretty much all it's used for anymore aside from 2D platforms.

Those combined with other things like changing the old ass diamond face button layout to something a bit more new since that's what they all do now.

Innovate and be more creative with how we control games don't just make the console more powerful. Power alone doesn't excite me.

I know this is a less elegant solution but I always hoped they would release dual screen like applications
For example if you have 2 switches in the home and had BOTW or something... The game runs on the docked switch and you can download the free smaller sized companion app on the other switch which handles the connecting and inputs and does all the second screen logic...
That way the feature is compatible with all devices, and doesn't eat into the performance of the game running on the docked switch.
Again not as elegant but would allow for a lot of wii u like experiences.

I like the thoughts above about improved joycons and wireless casting, and the 3D screens coming back...
I'd like to add that HD rumble was sort of a disappointment to me... both in how it feels and how little it is used or implemented. When I got my PS5 I didn't expect anything spectacular with rumble but it is such a massive step up and a natural progression of the tech I feel like they need to upgrade it in the next switch or controller or something.

The haptic feedback vibration motor on the DualSense controller is considerably larger than the HD Rumble on the Joy-Cons. So I think there are limitations to how much the haptic feedback vibration motor can be improved for a Joy-Con revision since I imagine Nintendo wants to keep a Joy-Con revision around the same size as the Joy-Cons. (Speaking of a Joy-Con revision, I'd like better ergonomics for a Joy-Con revision (e.g. PDP's Joy-Con Gel Guards).)

Headphone jack in the pro controller

Along with this, system voice chat and party functions.

People keep saying they’d do this on Switch if they had any plans to ever do it, but I’m not so sure. The eShop and NSO app performance absolutely tank if you try to use them during some games. I’m assuming they just aren’t willing to allot enough resources for a good experience on Switch in this area on top of everything else. Im holding out hope that Drake brings Nintendo up to speed

So what new hardware features would all of you like to see in the next Nintendo hardware that isn't in the Switch?
I would love to see something like the touch pads from steam devices. Or maybe Nintendo can adopt hall effect joysticks and really mainstream a driftless future.

Man just finished watching the Splatoon 3 Direct and... they are adding so many features and it looks great but the whole time I'm just wondering how this will look on the Switch 2, cause new features and content is great but it looks basically the same otherwise. Dying to see the visual upgrades this will surely have.

I'm getting super impatient!

Honestly with a Switch 2 I don‘t see any major upgrades in visual features for that game expect resolution and such, which is also already cool if you mean that. And yeah visually it is basically the same but I‘ve the feeling that it has a slightly better picture. At least there seem to be less aliasing.

better shadowing. Splatoon was one of the first games I noticed a deficiency in shadow quality

Boy did things quiet down around here after that Nikkei article.

I'm really not expecting anything other than higher resolution / a much cleaner image. I'm just hoping I'll still be invested in the game by the time it drops.

60fps in the city area too.

I've mentioned this already, but wireless docking. And perhaps swappable directional buttons for the left Joy-Con (i.e. allow the option to switch from separate directional buttons to a classic D-Pad or a circular D-Pad)?

Improved build quality on the Switch itself.
I think Nintendo's on the right track when build quality is concerned with the OLED model, at least when the console's concerned.

Yeah I'm pretty happy with the build quality of the Switch OLED and design. Mostly just want faster internals. Hopefully 2023 is the year! :)

Boy did things quiet down around here after that Nikkei article.
I mean, to be honest we’ve exhausted our topic discussion in April, we’ve just been dragging it for reasons.

We had the data breach and exhausted the only person who even bothered to actually look at it and also posts here. I know some others looked at it but don’t post here because they don’t like this thread.

I heard that it was just like this right before the official switch unveiling, a long and dreadful waiting game until it happened.

it's got to be about the nikkei report specifically

that could mean Nintendo giving a statement either confirming or denying that they insinuated there was no hardware in that interview

The "alleged" clarity was posted by Nikkei several hours ago when they published their interview, fyi.

Which in case people are not aware did not say anything about no new Switch hardware this FY. There was just a throwaway comment that despite all supply issues, Nintendo will be able to continue selling the three existing models.

So we're still operating under Nate's late 2022/H1 2023 comment with 2022 obviously a lot less likely due since it's already August and production seemingly did not start in full force yet.

Any comments or translations yet?

"Q: How is Nintendo faring with semiconductor procurement?

A: With cooperation from various business partners, we're on track for improvement from the latter half of this summer. But in terms of our sales forecast of 21 million units for the fiscal year through March 2023, we only have a clear production outlook for this year. Beyond that, things are uncertain.

I can't say specifically what is in short supply. Nintendo will continue to sell three [Switch] models: the standard model; the Switch Lite with reduced price, size and features; and the OLED model. We'll work out the best strategy as we go along. We're doing our best to procure high-quality products at an appropriate price with an eye toward the next few years."

The article has been up for more than 12hrs now & no one noticed... I guess headlines about not raising the price isn't as appealing.

Kind of a non-answer other than mentioning that they’ll continue to sell the existing models. Thanks

As always, you can interpret it how you want. "Nintendo will continue to sell three [Switch] models: the standard model; the Switch Lite with reduced price, size and features; and the OLED model" could mean "that's it for this FY". Or not.

The point I’m making is that it’s not remotely conclusive. It’s not news. You can only write that they aren’t shelving the OG Switch this year for instance.

If you choose to interpret as “nothing else this FY” that’s entirely on you, but that’s not what was said.

Dude, your interpretation is as wrong as it only can get.

If they had ro report about a new model regarding anything they would specify it way more clear.

The statement just means, that Nintendo is continuing to sell its 3 main systems despite shortages etc.

A new model is not mentioned at all, not even indirect…

Good to know Nintendo will not discontinue any model this FY, I guess.

Nate is the phasing out of 2022 from your side a personal opinion or based on any info?

I am asking since with this updated Nikkei article and these two Uncles mentioning a production start bsck in July, maybe we can still have hope I guess, right?😅🥹

Reckon when the Switch 2.0 comes out the eventual plan is to discontinue the OG Switch, reduce the price of the OLED and keep the Switch Lite?

I think the Lite will outlife both the OG and the OLED.

I try to make it clear that it's not my interpretation...

I get your point. But thats not the case here. This article just shows that there is no report on New Switch hardware at all, and everything remains the same as before the article -> so a launch could be with Metroid Prime, but more realisitic is with Zelda in March.

If Switch 2.0 has a 720p OLED screen then I would guess OLED would be the one to get phased out first, I'm not sure they will go for a full OLED line up unless it is proven permanently cheaper to do that

Let’s use our thinking caps for a second, gather around class, it’s time to huddle around the campfire to think for a second.

Why would Nintendo say that they have three models and another one? It makes no sense for them to say “oh yeah we will be selling the three models plus another model” or “we will be selling three models, but one of the current models will be replaced by this new model”.

We know they aren’t going to do that, at some point there will be four models that will be sold on store shelves. And these are remnants of previous shipments but if quarter they’re selling one model, and then the next quarter or three quarters down they are no longer selling that model, but a new model, there will still be remnants from the previous quarters that will still be sold in stores by the time that this new model will drop.

So if they literally say “we will be selling the switch lite, the switch and the switch OLED model“ you could literally just take that as either them saying “we’re literally not selling anything new ever again” or “this is a lie”

that said, I don’t think FY23 is on the table :p, but that’s my opinion not yours. Draw your own conclusion!

I wonder…

When are we going to understand that Nintendo is not going to announce a new model or an important delay, at an investor meeting? 🤔

When all splatoon fans learn what a sequel on the same system that’s multiplayer focused is, a.k.a. never.

I know some get it, but some disgruntled fans don’t and expected something else.

Once all get it though….
