I didn't mean to imply that Directs were fully over, I meant that we're not getting the same frequency as before and quite clearly some announcements are not being saved up for Directs anymore either. Just wanted to comment on how I felt Directs have been in a decline since the new CEO took over. Anyway, feel free to disagree.
In what way?? there has been more game announcements (and better) during the switch era compared to the Wii U/3ds days.

E3 being cancelled, even if we assume a full on grudge with Geoff, doesn't really explain the weirdness. They can and do host Directs without a broader event like E3 all the time.
E3 could explain it this time if they have a vested interest in making sure E3 comes back next year and the broader gaming community wants it to come back. They are on the board of the ESA, it makes sense to tie "big summer announcements" to the event they co-sponsor.

It's not really clear to me what they gain by sabotaging their marketing plans out of some loyalty to E3 in particular.

Are we still expecting something for tomorrow?
...I am.

Regarding the previous conversation about Nintendo's poor communication with the fans, I think no one will convince me that they are doing their best, even with the pandemic argument. They are doing what they think it's enough to be profitable, no more, no less. If your company sells toothbrushes or refrigerators, that's enough, if you are selling art, emotions and nostalgia, is not. That's my opinion and it's reasonable to be frustrated.
I was wrong about not having ANY interview, I admit it.

Pokémon should be tomorrow

So I guess they really built a treehouse set only for Live a live, what a strange day for all the workers "let's show a game for 30 minutes and then let's go home"
I honestly don't understand what people see in that Treehouse set.

It's... just a stage with three chairs and three tables. The stage is likely just a room on NoA's campus and the set design is as minimalistic as it gets - they didn't put up much of a decoration and they didn't even bother to hide the cables behind the Live a Live banner. The lighting isn't great either.

The presenters are just Treehouse employees and we know that NoA has an internal AV team, so all of the personell and equipment needed was in all likelihood already available. People say it looks expensive, when in fact it looks they simply used their already existing resources to record this.

And for comparison's sake: this was their E3 2021 Treehouse set. If you look at the ceiling, this appears to be the very same room and stage. But with the difference that back then they went through the effort to actually decorate the set with nice flooring, they hid the cables in the back with plants and the furniture doesn't look like they pulled it out of some office (rented?).

I don't understand why people think the Live a Live set was a sign of bigger things to come when it looks so much cheaper than what they did last year.

It's hampering their short terms plans a bit (it's not like they won't announce their games, it just won't be in a direct) in order to ideally solidify their long term position as having a premier physical expo every June. I think they gain a lot by having these things once a year, we know they go all out in decorating their booths, providing treehouse demos, all that stuff. It's a big gain for Nintendo's type of product which often needs (or heavily benefits from) hands on experiences to truly demonstrate what is on offer.

These discrepancies can be easily explained by the fact that Metroid Dread was first party, and Live A Live is third party.
I'm joking

Yeah I didn't really think about that, I guess the Live a Live segment didn't have that much effort into it

I really really really don't see how the average Nintendo fan is going to feel slighted that their product's marketing isn't being done according to Internet hype for More More More Feed Me More.
Anyone interested in what has been slated for 2022 won't magically stop being interested just because their artificial social media hype train hasn't been juicy.

shhhhh don't use logical analysis, people here don't know what that is

It's hampering their short terms plans a bit (it's not like they won't announce their games, it just won't be in a direct) in order to ideally solidify their long term position as having a premier physical expo every June. I just don't see how what they're doing accomplishes that at all.

This thread falls into dooming so fast it's kinda funny

Just sit back and enjoy the ride. We get a Pokémon trailer tomorrow, Live A Live next week, and XC3 the week after. Who needs a Direct? (well, the non-weebs, I suppose)

If I were to guess what happened, internal delays (like BOTW2) left Nintendo without a big showstopping reveal they would have wanted to close out a June Direct

So instead of doing the sensible thing and throwing together a presentation with third-party stuff, Bayo3, Fire Emblem, Kirby, Metroid, etc, they just threw the baby out with the bathwater and said "fuck it, we'll try again in September"
Who needs a Direct?
Raises hand

I do. Badly.

For me I just want the rest of the year set already. Feels weird not having B3 dated or MPHD announced.

I don’t need a direct, but I’d like those pretty soon. Because we normally DO have the year set by this point

I personally don’t buy the idea that a BotW2 delay resulted in no June direct. This is the same company that closed out a direct with a Xenoblade remaster.

If they wanted to do a June direct, a lack of BotW2 footage wouldn’t have stopped them.

Ya. I got my Switch, have loads to play, I'm satisfied. If Nintendo announce the Pro that's great, or a Direct, but I'm confident in them as they've done a brilliant job with the system.

tbh honest if there was a direct this month I don't think a small shop game would have been part of it. a lot of these smaller eshop games are revealed outside of directs anyway.

I just don't see how what they're doing accomplishes that at all.
They're exclusively associating their big summer blowout with "E3". They're actively saying "hey, we're not gonna have a big direct and presentation in June if E3 isn't happening, so you better hope E3 is back and Summer Gamesfest doesn't take it's place".

It's basic brand synergy, they're part of the ESA so they benefit from all of the exposure and publicity E3 brings. By associating themselves just with E3 they continue to help benefit E3 and the ESA.

The idea that Nintendo is not that interested in Directs since Furukawa took over, I really have to disagree here, especially since it's not working like he decides alone what will they do.

I think the RPG saturation on Switch, has made desires for a Direct much more. Right now the only big non-RPG with a defined date is Splatoon 3. Meanwhile we got:

Live a Live
Xeno 3
Mario Rabbids 2
Pokemon

All confirmed for release by the end of the year, and all providing enough content to last a while on their own. That’s on top of Legends Arceus and Triangle Strategy having already released. FE: Warriors is also basically an ARPG given it’s based more on tactics and character building than action, but it’s up to you whether ya wanna count that.

(Overall I think Nintendo’s non-RPG output this gen has been lacking so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised lol)

What are your guys most anticipated game for 2022?
Honestly, I’m not sure anymore. Pokemon maybe? Don’t get me wrong, it’s been a great year so far, and I can already probably assure you that MH Rise Sunbreak is gonna gobble up all of my free time this year. But looking forward? Other than Pokemon there isn’t THAT much I’m into.

Sports Story…. Where you at…

edit: oh fuck also Live A Live is actually my Number 1 most anticipated game, I totally forgot it wasn’t out yet

Uhh, Pokemon I guess? And I'm not even honestly all that hyped for it. If there really is a trailer tomorrow, hopefully it's got some awesome stuff in it to really sell me on the new gen.

Why we get another Kirby game instead of another RPG…
Because thank god, that's why. The Switch needs another RPG like a beach needs more sand.

the trick is to get so busy making your own games that you don’t have enough leftover gamebrain to spin your wheels speculating about games by other people

which leaves you with the only morally correct thing to do on a video game forum:
