StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

Someone explain to me how a holiday release this year is still in the cards. Not in terms of a reveal, but from Nintendo’s perspective. Don’t they have to relay info to dev partners and get manufacturing ready far in advance?

We’re in July. Is Nintendo really still thinking “hmmm…late 2022 or early 2023”? Like surely the decision itself would have to be locked in by now if it was in fact coming out this year.

Am I getting my question across clearly? This is probably something insiders might not know yet.
Nintendo literally revealed the Switch 5 months before release, their dev partners have been notified this exists since late 2020, as that's when the first dev kits went out.

My gut feeling is still that it's a 2023 product at the earliest will be a March 2023 product to mirror OG Switch and more closely align with BOTW2's release date, but I think at this point in time, in July, there's a narrow window (mostly this month extending into early August) where 2022 is still possible given that they have plenty of time to announce and reveal a lineup for it, considering they have expliciting noped out of an E3 style direct showing their releases for H2 2023 even if we know a few of them already.

That said, if i'm betting on date, it's H2 2023, followed by H1 2023 with 2022 near the bottom along with 2024 release date.

If dev kits really were sent out at the end of 2020, 2022 is a thousand times more likely than 2024. Even if you think 2023 is likeliest.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if some games in handheld mode rendered at above 720p and supersampled for better image quality. Sharp 720p looks better than blurry 1080p anyway.
Rendering games above 720p, and then downsampling to 720p, in handheld mode, can negatively impact performance and battery life, as shown with Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition (here and here).

I'm ready.

Can I get a sequel to Lego City Undercover? (Perhaps with DLSS and ray tracing.)

Do we think likely that if a pro is announced, the pro could get some native ports, while the regular switch and lite get cloud versions? I am thinking RdR2 for example.

I thought quantum tunneling started to occur at below 4 nm?
It's not a hard value, that's why I used 10-ish. Could be a bit more or a bit less. There's a trade-off between gains from miniaturization and losses from tunneling, and there's a threshold after which the second is equal or superior to the first.
So physically, you'll eventually hit a wall and that wall is more or less here. After that, you can try clocking your chip higher using a different materials than silicon, you can try to use photons, you can change the geometry of your transistors (which is regularly done, see the gate all around being introduced on state of the art chips)...
One important lever to increase effective performances is specialized hardware, which is exactly what Nvidia is pursuing with the introduction of tensor cores for example. We can expect more of that in the future, though I don't know exactly what.

. His perspective isn’t consensus but he is a wunderkind and he does believe in break through.

Then I will follow the consensus of the field and the opinion of equally knowledgeable people, who incidentally don't try to sell me GPUs either. As for believing in breakthroughs, one is free to believe, but we should never count on one either.

Still not sure that this is going to be a new SoC if it's launching this year. Could be something that fills in the final 2 years before next gen like the DSi and needs were, and it's by far the easiest way of getting more performance from the same games, Devs would already have the necessary hardware, assuming memory is not above 8GB.

Devs have 4K devkits since late 2020

I'm not talking about DLSS.
There were Switch games being prepared on TX1 before the n3DS launched, and 3DS games prepared on devkits before the DSi launched (although on Nvidia hardware at the time)

We’ve just had the OLED model which is a premium model of the OG Switch. If they were just going to boost the clocks with the OG SoC then they would have done it with that model.

It's weird whichever way you slice it to release two pricier models 2 years in a row. I'm not sure they will look the same either, it could do with looking recognisably different whatever it is.

I posted in the Metroid thread that I thought the Metroid Prime remake didn't make any sense as a late-gen game - that it's best to release remakes (remasters, whatever - a remaster with new geometry) early on to sell the new hardware, like Sony did with Demon's Souls. Easy way to churn out a flash-looking game for launch with a built-in hardcore audience and a strong reputation as a classic that maybe not enough people played.
Now I wonder if I wasn't onto something, and that it's a cross-gen game that's been polished up for the Pro?

With things developing as they are, I guess it's time to put my OG Switch up on ebay kleinanzeigen (it's a subsidiary of ebay in Germany where private people can sell to private people on a negotiation basis much like... idk an online flea market. It's ebay but without the whole hassle of bidding and reviewing people etc).

I alrd got the oled when that was released and I, by the love of God, do not need 3 Switches for a single person household.

That being said should I do it now in hopes of still fetching a bigger price or wait till the announcement? Not like I wouldn't have a Switch if the announcement doesn't happen because my oled still exists.

If it’s a OG Switch from launch that can be jailbroken I don‘t think it matters if you sell it now or in a year. They retain price pretty good, I sold mine when I got the OLED for almost as much as it cost in the first place, and it wasn’t really in good condition. (Sold it on eBay.de though, not Kleinanzeigen)

Thanks for the tip! I didn't consider the jailbreaking-possibility because I don't do that stuff but yeah it's a day 1 model. Unless software updates I installed somehow took away the jailbreaking-possibility then it should still be possible to do that.

Though I am not sure how many people know about stuff like that (& hence know the worth), and I am not sure if it's ok to advertise that option in the listing without getting I trouble. XD

But I will consider it. I still have two old laptops I need to get rid of too, so I will maybe slot in a day for ebay-related work one of these days.

P.S.: Unless someone here is interested, if so feel free to slide into my dms. But keep in mind I am in Germany so shipping to anywhere outside the EU will come with its price.

I still believe $450 - $500 is possible for Nintendo's new hardware.
50,000 yen may be a possibility,
but at the current exchange rate can not see Nintendo releasing a new system that is 67,000 Yen ($500), more expensive than the PS3 was.

Inflation and wage increase has not happened in Japan the way it has in other countries, 67,000 yen still seems like $600~ to a consumer in JP.

PS5 is 50000 yen in Japan (370ish dollars) and 500 dollars in NA, they could do the same and if its really a 500$ console they will do it. Switch in Japan is right now 32970¥ (250ish dollars) while in NA it is 300$ still, Japan will keep getting consoles a lot cheaper if Yen keeps being this weak

I thought that the mod uncle wasn't in the position to have actual info? Did that change by now?

I advertised it as a model that can be jailbroken. It’s not illegal to do so at all, only if you start selling it with pirated software loaded. Software updates were now a problem when I sold it as it‘s a hardware exploit.
There‘s actually quite the market for launch model switches so I don’t think you will have any problem to sell it.

Did a quick eBay search, Right now they seem to go for 200-250 Euros still.

Thanks for discussing.

Those products were released before the yen went hay-wild.
There is a reason Xbox is outselling PS5 some weeks in Japan, it`s because Sony isn`t allocating any units, so almost moot on that price

Apple just raised the prices on everything by up to 25% in Japan. It`s a premium product with less price elasticity than Nintendo consoles so they can do this.

Would be amazed if in the year 2022~23 they release a new console and have that large of a price difference between NA and JP, although yep, this is a unprecedent age of a weak yen we are entering, so have to wait and see.

I could see it being called the Nintendo Switch Max and each time the system name is said in a piece of official marketing, the 'Max' is said in the voice of Vecna.

A Switch Pro early 2023 makes WAY more sense than a Switch 2. There is no way a Switch 2 comes out until late 2024 in my opinion. I really really hope there is some Pro thing released soon, I can't play a handful of games because of its shit framerate (like hyrule warriors: AOC).

But at the same time, if they're coming out with this powerful upgraded console, what will will be the hook of Switch 2 then? Interesting.

I think they will keep it clean and straight to the point after wii u disaster, switch blank (4k), a stronger model that will have some 3rd party exclusives. Blank in place of whatever wording they choose to mean stronger hardware

By 2024 the switch will be in its what? 7th year? Which is already longer than most console generations already, and with what we know of the nvidia leak, the system no matter how its positioned by nintendo, will likely have the power of a generational leap
