StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

If the next model launches this year there's only two potential spots for a launch as far as i'm concerned.
  • November 18th; alongside Pokemon Gen 9 (Game Freak have traditionally been quick to support hardware revisions with new features; currently the largest title shceduled for this year by a longshot).
  • Late September - Early October; alongside an unannounced first-party title (not Prime Remastered either). Usually a packed few weeks for Nintendo but currently this year we have nothing scheduled for that time.
My guess is early october alongside Bayonetta 2 and RDR2 (exclusive). Later in November a SV special edition of the console releases. If there's a Lite/Mini version of Drake Pokémon edition should be that.

I wonder if there will be swappable covers for the Lite version. That one feature I really want it back. Give me the Jibanyan one for my Drake Lite pls, Nintendo!

Issue with the 2nd timeframe is that there is the rumored/leaked Splatoon OLED version which makes me thing is not possible for a new console to release so close to it imo. Nov-Dec is the most realistic timeframe if it's this year the release date
In 2019 Japan got a Dragon Quest limited edition regular Switch within a week of the Switch Lite launch. Last year they released the BDSP Switch Lite a month after OLED launched.

The OLED won't immediately become obsolete for a sizable audience who only plan to play specific titles (like Splatoon 3) so I don't see why they'd need to be concerned with spacing the new model out that far from a Splatoon 3 OLED bundle.

I think if they really wanted, they could have released Zelda this year. The game maybe really needs a little bit more time but they were probably also considering other games that were pushed back so Zelda isn‘t really needed. And who knows maybe its release timing really depends on new hardware, waiting with the release of the game to give this new Switch the right initial push.
I would be glad to see the new switch this year, but a release with Zelda in early 2023 would make sense to me.

The fact that Nintendo held a partner's showcase instead of normal direct, really gives me hope that some kind announcement is coming in July, i really hope i am right

Did we get any more information from chinese forums? Why are some people hopeful for a July reveal of Drake?
Because if it it's coming this year it'll likely be announced in July. Nothing really more than that.
Did he really say an announcement would be in July? Can you give the timestap?
I can't remember exactly but it's not a hard guess considering that's when the Lite and OLED model were announced.

I'm hopeful there's a big direct/presentation in July... if there's new hardware we can think of this partner direct as an appetiser

Why are some people hopeful for a July reveal of Drake?
Due to the previous new versions (Lite and OLED) being revealed in July, combined with people trying to make sense of the lack of a first-party Direct in June. The question is, why would Nintendo hold their games back from the June presentation, and waiting to show them off alongside the new system would be one possible answer.

if there's an Uncle or two saying it's going into production then i guess that's a wrap.

i'm still with there being big unannounced titles in the bag if it is coming this year. something bigger than a remake or remaster too.

so unless July comes fruition still in camp BOTW 2 with production not starting until next year. no need to announce until immediately after Christmas. everyone saying Zelda = March, could easily be May.

The only uncle who says it's going into production now as far as I've seen is an unverified random redditor, or a Urruncle for short.

It's really bizarre why they didn't announce any 1st party games in June.... they gotta have some kind of direct or presentation in July if theres still games to be announced

The biggest give away to me was the Direct Mini Partner Showcase. Don’t get me wrong, it was great, But not “June E3 season” great. It really just seems like Nintendo was holding back, and there really isn’t any reason why they should. They could have shown BOTW2 gameplay, more Splatoon, a new 1st party reveal that is surely in the works… but they didn’t. I feel like they’re waiting. So put me in the camp of “July reveal, Fall 2022 release.”

Apology for my ignorance, but does this rumoured new hardware (Drake?) sound like a revision or a successor?
To give you a non jokey answer, the specs are a full generational jump with a surprisingly beefy GPU, but i’s believed that it will be treated as part of the same family, similarly to how they treated the Game Boy Color.

Depends on what you last saw, but no

Why are some people hopeful for a July reveal of Drake?
Because folk want it, and that’s fueling speculation, mostly. Grubb suggested that a first party direct mini might make sense (purely speculatively) which got transmuted to a “rumor” of a July direct.

The best window we had was always last 2022 to early 2023. It was doubted by folks mostly out of pessimism and a lack of smoke (or ignoring existing smoke).

But a few small things have stirred belief back up, and folks are saying, well, if it’s late 2022 it needs to target holiday availability, and OLED/Lite were announced a few months prior to release.

All these things combine to “Nintendo is going to do a first party direct centered around the pro” with the corollary “if we don’t see it in July, it’s not 2022”

For the record I don’t buy it.

Maybe this July-August presentation would only feature games that are updated on or exclusive to Drake? Matter that’s why they got all the “regular” Switch the party games out of the way?

If we get a Switch 4K/DLSS model announcement in the next two weeks, I can't imagine any piece of unannounced gaming news making me happier than that through all of 2023.

Same. I hope I can try and get one at least. Getting one will be a nightmare but I hope I can be as lucky as I was with my ps5, but that took me a few months to get

Tad bit more than that but nothing worthy of reporting or sharing, as timing plans can shift at any given moment.

Which means this comment is not worth reporting! I see you, random outlets. I see you. It's old info from last year.

Hey Nate, let's say a 4K and DLSS-capable Switch revision was announced in July for Q4 of this year. Which already released Switch game would you personally be most excited to revisit with the spec boost, and which announced-but-not-released, or heavily rumored game do you think would benefit most from the new hardware?

I'd be thrilled to replay Link's Awakening, BOTW, and Xenoblade Definitive Edition. Metroid Prime HD or Prime 4 would be my most anticipated on the unreleased front. Retro's artstyle and polish combined with 4K upscaling and 60fps feels like a dream.

XBC3. Would be nice to play with the best performance possible.

Basically, any game upscaled to 4K, even if at 30fps, would be so freaking amazing to witness 🤤

I'm tempering the expectations for when it'll come out though, but at least there's some credence it'll happen in the future.

I know there's precedent for a "July or bust" mindset for the Switch 4K reveal this year, but I just really hope we don't leave 2022 behind without having official confirmation of the hardware's specific design and functionality.

if the device gets announced, then we'll probably start seeing leaks of what the dev kits look like and what not. I wouldn't be shocked if they looked like the current switch oled

what if the metroid prime remaster is something big? what they said is that Nintendo was surprised by what Retro was doing with the remaster, and that's why it relocated the MP4 development to them.
If it's something big, 4K textures, new effects, maybe even raytracing, it would give some sense of Drake's power.

There’s nothing wrong with being hyped. Disappointment is normal. As long as you’re able to control your emotions reasonably when something doesn’t turn out as you like, then have hope.

it's made for Switch first, so don't go expecting that. just better models and textures with accompanying lighting

As exciting as this hardware announcement talk is, I’m so much more excited about what it could mean for software reveals. It might be the next rare occasion Nintendo shows their hand more than the usual few months in advance, such as when they did the Switch presentation in 2017. It’s all about the games as they say.

I think until next year, Drake will be primarily about the known upcoming games being scaled to higher resolution and framerates, with Zelda being the headliner. third parties will have the ability to take point here with announcements like Final Fantasy 15, Kingdom Hearts 3, Tales of Arise, Cyberpunk, etc.

when they start talking about FY24 games, that'll be when we really see games that take advantage of Drake

I dont think they will do it that much, maybe we will know a couple of the next year big games o during the first year/year in a half but they dont need to show that much now due to a constant flow of software releases for the Switch.

Can't wait for Capcom to bring over RE2, RE3, RE7, RE8, and DMC5. Maybe even RE4 but I'm not going to get my hopes up.

If this 4K/DLSS Switch is real what improvements would we see in handheld mode? I have no interest in playing the system docked, but if there are any significant improvements for handheld then I'll be ready to upgrade.

The only specs we currently know for sure are the GPU specs, it has 12 SMs versus the 2 the base Switch had. So regardless of whether or not it's docked mode this thing will be capable of far better image quality and graphical effects.

It has ray tracing cores, so at minimum it will be able to support ray traced lighting in handheld

It’s unclear what level of power it will have in handheld mode, but even pessimistic assumptions are that games will be better at hitting 720p60fps than current model
