StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

The timing of the direct being right around their annual meeting of shareholders actually suggests if they announce hardware it'll be separate from the direct but possibly in close proximity.

Last time they had a direct this close to the annual meeting of shareholders was in 2012 where they announced the 3DSXL.
I could see something like a press release prior to the direct, then more info in the direct, all just ahead of the investor meeting.

Anyone here who can read Japanese at a high level? This anonymous Japanese Twitter account belongs to a buyer for video game stores (or so they claimed). Recently the person seems to be hinting at something noteworthy is coming from Nintendo. My Japanese reading is absolute pants, and the machine translation doesn't help when the writer is being deliberately opaque. If you can, please help decipher the tweets below.

[June 5th] The person had a meal with some industry friends and received some "dangerous" information about Nintendo (among other things)

[June 8th] They heard some pre-E3 rumors, and opined that Nintendo is "relentless/merciless" (unclear what they meant; is Nintendo going hammer the competition?)

[June 15th] They posted two tweets back-to-back, 1) pondering whether "it" would be announced/released, and 2) thinking that Nintendo can afford to (afford to what—to announce? to wait? unclear what they meant)

[June 15th] They ostensibly complained about the handheld mode resolution of Xenoblade DE and Xenoblade 2, and believes that it can be improved "now".

[June 15th] They think that despite the (FE?) leak, Nintendo still has gem(s) hidden

Obviously I don't know whether this person is legit or if any of these are related to Drake at all. For what it's worth, last year when Bloomberg reported a "4K" Switch being forthcoming, they called out Mochizuki as "delusional". So they just might have some insights into this stuff.

I want this to be real, but I'm calling BS.

I ended up buying an OLED because I didn’t think a proper successor would launch so soon but if it does, I would be mildly pissed but preorder anyways

Yeah this past year has been rough for us with the Nintendo OLED bumming everyone out, Nintendo shutting down bloomberg whom been quiet ever since, not hearing anything from GDC and Nate cancelling his podcast for the next Switch Hardware. While the Nvidia leak was fun for all of 5 seconds, im still wanting something more tangible like when Nikkei reported on Nintendo ramping up hardware production months before the Switch was announced or when the back of the Switch Lite was leaked, is that too much to ask for lol

I don‘t see them doing a major Hardware reveal during a direct were they want to announce games too.
The switch reveal had both brand new game announcements and hardware. Even the first look video had new games. The 3DS was announced in a direct and so was the New3DS.

They only started to separate the two recently with the switch revisions.

I’ll ask my partner to take a look, but I doubt their Japanese is any better than yours.

This is the worst kind of hint. It comes from the sort of out of the way source that sometimes has info but can also get away with being suggestive as hell. If anything gets announced it will be reteospectively seen as “solid” but if it isn’t it will be seen as “obvious bullshit”

Just entertaining the possibility.

After all, that’s literally how things get leaked. No one paid much mind to the Snitch until they got things actually right and all eyes are on them now.
I feel you. I want a pro to be real so damn bad. I’ve just been burned too many times. 😬

How do you guys see this playing out if the announcement was coming soon? Will there be a days notice? Will they just drop a new trailer a day or two before the direct? Because they all have to announce the Nintendo Direct, which I believe it could happen next week

The wrinkle here I think is the shareholder meeting. It might be a good opportunity to briefly talk about their long term strategy with the device and answer some questions. So they'd want to announce this before that. But probably not too long before, I'm thinking hours (if it happens).

Direct announcement——>Switch whatever reveal——>Shareholder meeting——>Nintendo Direct

This would be my guess of order of events if it were to happen

I had just finished watching Moon Knight. What the heck does "Dane" have to do with any of this?

Something something "Drake" something something "Nightwing"... please educate me on superhero aliases.

I am also suspecting they might change codenames just for the sake of keeping secrecy.

Not Moon Knight, Black Knight, whose real name is Dane Whitman. He’s in Eternals and dating Sersi

'Dane' we got from kopite7kimi tweets.

That's this dude. Then we chopped off his surname to get Dane.

'Drake' we got from... the Nvidia hack, I think? Presumably Tim Drake, one of the Robins.
...who at some point serves a stint as Batman I guess? When was that? I know Dick did, but didn't know of Tim doing that.
Anyway, conceivably kopite may have mixed up 'Black Knight'/(Dane) with 'Dark Knight'/(Drake).

So is there a real possibility we could see a new system soon?

It’s always been a possibility, but I don’t know that we have any especially solid evidence of it happening yet.

Just a bit a hype and hysteria as we approach an atypically positioned June Direct.

He of course is a Joker at one point, but I dont recall Batman[/iSPOILER]

No, there hasn’t been anything concrete that’s pointing to new hardware beeing shown soon. It’s more like people are hoping and looking at stars of align type of deal(rumored Nintendo direct date, shareholders meeting, that random Twitter poster posted in this thread, etc.)

I would very much NOT expect any hardware announcements that isn’t just a special edition in the next month or so.

I am leaning towards this well. Even if it's not launching this year, they may just announce it if its falling within this FY.

Maybe I'm just biased against it because I think it would be a bad move, but I don't see this kind of hardware getting announced in a press release or a meeting. I think the Lite and OLED reveal model is what they would want to follow, just more in-depth. Following it up with a press conference or meeting to explain in more detail, I could see happening, and maybe they think the shareholder meeting is a good place for that.

Yes, Drake is from the Nvidia leak. It's used in several places and very clearly so, and there are even places that spell it out explicitly like this:

C++:
// Ampere Tegra GA10B (T234 / Orin)
GLSLC_CHIP_TYPE_AMPERE_TEGRA_GA10B = 0x00000004,

// Ampere Tegra GA10F (T239 / Drake)
GLSLC_CHIP_TYPE_AMPERE_TEGRA_GA10F = 0x00000008,

Has anyone actually looked into that Japanese leader and checked out his Twitter account? A quick glance shows he posts a lot but I don't know Japanese. Might be worth:

1. Seeing if he posted any other relevant Nintendo information.
2. Examine his tweets to see what kind of person he is and if he comes off as trustworthy.

Might be worth looking into if someone here knows Japanese or has a good translator.

Glad many of you seem as entertained as I am by these cryptic tweets. As I emphasized when posting about the back shell rumors back in April, it's best to treat these unverified "leaks" as a source of entertainment and not much more than that.

One side note about DeepL though. It is justifiably popular because its results are closer to natural language than Google and other free translators. To achieve that appearance of national language, however, DeepL sometimes drop parts of the content that it cannot successfully translate, thus resulting in incomplete translations. Take that tweet about Xenoblade for example (italics mine):
  1. [DeepL] The screen resolution is so low in portable mode that it makes me feel depressed when I play. I think you can do it now.
  2. [Google] In mobile mode, the screen resolution is low and I'm playing and it gets dented, so I wonder if you can raise it. He thought he could do it now.
  3. [Lingvanex] If it is in mobile mode, the screen resolution is low, and I am playing and concave, so please raise it. Think now that it will come out.
  4. [Systran] In the mobile mode, the screen resolution is low and it is playing and it is concave, so let me raise it. I think I can do it now.
Note that apart from DeepL, all 3 other translations contain a key phrase about raising the resolution, but it's entirely absent from the DeepL output. This is only one example; you're bound to encounter more if you compare the Google and DeepL translations often enough.

I would very much NOT expect any hardware announcements that isn’t just a special edition in the next month or so.

There was a Teen Titans story where they fought their evil adult selves as a version of the "Justice Lords" concept. Adult Tim was Batman in that story.

Something to keep in mind, Nintendo projects around 20m switch sales this year. If they announce a switch pro soon, to be released q1 next year, then they're absolutely not hitting 20m switch sales this year. Even with the surge of switch pro sales at the end, it wont be able to reach nearly that level because as soon as they announce a pro sales are gonna tank. The only way they can launch a pro early 2023 and hit 20m sales is if they announce it after the holidays.

But the 20m figure could be already including a new device in the Switch family… If they are able to produce, let’s say, a maximum of 5m of this model for this fiscal year, they would be forecasting 15m of the current Switch devices (which might obviously take a hit if a new version enters the conversation).

IF these tweets turn out to be legit, we should probably get some corroboration leading up to the Direct, right? If this info is out on the street and being discussed in restaurants then other people have to know about it.

The latest: "For the Direct, I wouldn't expect it (as usual). Basically, I'll believe it when it's released."

What a rollercoaster ride 🙃

Sounds like this rumor is basically dead lol.
IF none of these was made up, my interpretation is that the person recently heard enough about "it" to take this seriously (unlike last year, he poo-poo'd the Mochizuki report), but has no idea of the announcement/release date.

If this hardware is releasing this holiday season there are a couple ways I can see Nintendo handling this and I'll cover the two highly probable ones in my opinion.

Firstly, I don't see them revealing the hardware during their usual summer direct. With there being a lot of potentially big reveals I think they will give software announcements their own space.

So my first option is, they do the summer games direct and all of the footage is regular switch footage, no Drake exclusives will be revealed. Very shortly afterwards, say 1-2 weeks afterwards Nintendo Announces another direct but masks its true purpose. For example they announce a Nintendo direct focusing on the Nintendo Switch Online service but they announce the hardware during that direct also and show some comparisons between regular switch and Drake, they also announce some Drake exclusives with an online focus.

Advantages, hugggggeeee amount of hype dropping a second direct close to the original, hiding its true purpose then doing a surprise reveal in what would otherwise be a less interesting direct would shake things up a bit. Disadvantage is live viewership would be lower with it being an NSO direct but the news would spread fast anyway. This option is less likely than option 2.

Option 2.

Same as above, only instead of a direct Nintendo drops a high production value Drake trailer similar to the original switch trailer, roof parties and all, two weeks after the summer game direct. At the same time on all social media platforms Nintendo Announces a Drake focused direct that has some NSO stuff tacked on.

I think this option would win summer for Nintendo, huge game reveals in the direct, sudden trailer drop for new hardware from nowhere followed by a 2-4 week wait for the real detail, all the time building hype.

Would this hurt hardware sales for a little while? I'm not sure but I think it would cause a huge surge in software sales and pre orders.

Thoughts?

Sounds like this rumor is basically dead lol.

Most likely just nothing new to report. Devs still have kits, devs are still working on games and the release is probably 2023 so we won’t get much more noise until that time is a few months closer.

Out of curiosity, how did you land on this random 600 follower Japanese account?

For the past two weeks, there has been a ton of maintance for the majority of Nintendo first party games, the NSO service, Nintendo Accounts, etc. The last amount of maintaince is on the 20th, in the early morning for the Nintendo eShop. I fully believe they will annouce the Direct on Tuesday and have it air a week later.
I cannot emphasize enough that the maintenance lately has all been very normal and not really pointing at anything in particular in terms of the Direct. Monday eShop maintenance in particular is something that happens very frequently and usually results in, at best, minor tweaks to the eShop UI. The vast majority of the time, maintenance isn't especially interesting.
The switch reveal had both brand new game announcements and hardware. Even the first look video had new games. The 3DS was announced in a direct and so was the New3DS.

They only started to separate the two recently with the switch revisions.
The Switch reveal had game footage, sure, but it was all effectively teasers with the focus squarely on the hardware. They didn't elaborate on any of it until the big Switch presentation months later.

The 3DS also wasn't announced in a Direct. It was announced in a PDF. This one in particular. Nintendo Directs weren't even a thing until after the system launched.

If new hardware is to be featured in this year's summer Direct, I think it's most likely that it will get a dedicated teaser beforehand, just like every single other piece of hardware that's borne the Switch name.

The NX was revealed in an financial report If you’re going that route. The 3DS was announced (to the public) at E3 in a mainly software focus presentation. What I’m saying is that Nintendo isn’t shy of doing a hardware plus software presentation TOGETHER. This isn’t some weird foreign concept for them.

Are we accepting ”patterns” again? I could see them doing a teaser… Or NOT. There’s nothing stopping them from announcing new hardware in a Direct imo.

It also happened in September 2020. The Partner Showcase of that month was announced during the financial briefing and aired right afterwards. It had the Monster Hunter Rise reveal.

Anything is possible, but it's clearly been an intentional strategy of Switch era Nintendo to keep hardware announcements and game announcements mostly separate. Hardware is one of two main categories that tends to get excluded from Directs, alongside parts of Nintendo's lineup that wouldn't resonate as well with the Direct audience.

I don’t think Nintendo needs more than 7-8 minutes to show new hardware on a Nintendo direct. Just talk about its capabilities, what the main difference is and more. That is if it’s supposedly going to be in the switch family and revealed as a revision
