hell yeah. I'd like to play 3 again, and see the stuff in Royal
I never finished P3, idk if Tartarus was really my thing. I would love if they added something akin to traditional dungeons in that one. I never played Royal but vanilla P5 is one of the best games I ever played, so I would definitely take it. Also never played P4.
Imagine, just how they announced FF7 to 12 ports but with Persona. That would be the dream lol.
That's exactly what I was talking about!!
I think some "definitive" form of Persona 3 (with FES and Portable content all wrapped up together) would be wonderful, though if they don't want to do the work I'd accept Portable. I kinda weirdly preferred the menu-based navigation honestly...

A port of the excellent Persona 4 (I haven't played Golden so I can't speak to it) would be wonderful as well

they can keep p5 lmao
No they can't keep P5R!!! 😭😭😭
It's a beautiful dream.

We'll get a Persona Pinball game instead.
If it's a spin off sequel ala P5S I'll eat.
I honestly would expect that since I think a number of the PS1 remasters have tipped up first in Directs so far

This P1 and P2 erasure will not stand. Seriously, it’s time for Atlus NA to right their biggest blunder with the PSP.
I just didn't want to fan fic too much, but what I WANT is everything Persona on the Switch.

This has got to be the Direct with GoldenEye in it... right?

But will it be only the N64 version of the game on NSO? Or only the remaster version on eShop? Or the remaster on eShop but then it also comes "free" with NSO Expansion Pak as a subscriber perk? Or eShop gets the remastered version but also NSO gets the N64 version?

I can't decide personally. There are solid arguments for and against all of these scenarios.

Just like February 2019 which had Fire Emblem, DQ, Tokyo Factory new IP, Rune factory 4 and 5 and so much more. Nintendo's strength is Jrpgs and they know it. People will moan about them but they're literally system sellers to hardcore and niche audiences.

Buckle up, because we are getting insane amount of Jrpgs from both third and first party.

Fun times ahead.
Would be a top tier direct for me.

I kinda feel like GoldenEye may be an E3 announcement, same thing with Metroid Prime HD. Would love to see both appear in this though.

For NSO they have N64 pretty much perfectly timed to cover them through June with the lineup they got.

Maybe they save another lineup reveal for E3, and instead we see GameBoy NSO announced this month? I guess it depends on whether they're hitting their internal targets on expansion pack subscribers. Will be interesting to see if they mention it in their financial results.

Ugh, I could see this being saved for around E3 time. Especially if they are adamant about sticking to the one N64 game a month rollout plan.

I can't wait to see what younger folk think of both of these games though.

I really want to play DK '94 without breaking out legacy hardware. I sure hope it happens soon.

I don't think it's fair to call Triangle strategy minor while touting FE a big thing like you're saying. If it performs similarly to Octopath traveller, which is the only comparison we can really make, it'll break 2m with no sweat. (Octopath is over 2.5m, with the vast majority being the Switch version).

Expecting to punch in the same weight class as Fire Emblem is pretty reasonable.
Yeah, I guess so, I was just going off the assumption that it won't sell as well as Octopath since it's a not-FE SRPG. Plus, I feel like Octopath had a huge advantage coming out as early as it did, and having a unique artstyle that's no longer novel with Triangle Strategy. I could be wrong tho.

Plus, FE 2022 could end up being bigger than 3H anyway.
also no war of genesis love?

Forgot about this! Between stuff like this and that Project eve game (the Nier-esque game from one of the Sony showcases) I'm really happy to see more Korean devs getting into console game development.
I want a Fire Emblem with western (especially European) art. We have more than enough anime SRPG's around, Fire Emblem should follow Advance Wars's lead, even for just one game.
67b.jpg

FE's anime art is great smh

I feel like FE would lose part of its appeal and identity if it dropped its nice-looking anime art with some Western artstyle. AW isn't even "Western" looking anyway, unless you're talking about the remakes.
I didn't play Royal so maybe it solved P5's entirely unlikable characters, stilted writing, glacial pacing and moral failings

and if it did, sure bring it to switch

otherwise, let people play some good Persona games (lets get the PSP versions of 1 and 2 while we're at it!) instead of 5
Persona 5 >>>>> Subway

Nah, but seriously: They actually did improve the localization, so your second point may be fixed. (I disagree with the others tho, even in vanilla P5).

Fantasian console release
honestly I feel like Fantasian is a 90% hard lock
there's no way that thing stays on Apple Arcade to die forever
Yeah, I'm expecting this sooner or later, probably just as soon as any timed-agreements end.

Kirby trailer confirms the game is adorable and stuffed.
Everything is made out of plushies now? I suppose the wordplay about being stuffed is inevitable.

(lets get the PSP versions of 1 and 2 while we're at it!)
These often seem to be left out of the conversation, and I really think they shouldn't be. I guess they're mostly tossed aside for not fitting the mold. 'Tis a shame.

Finally popped into this thread after a month of meaning to do so. These are my very unhelpful comments thus far.

Eh, I'm with Marce, Persona 5 Royal is literally one of the best games I have ever played (but I also adored the original) and I found it to be miles better than Persona 4 Golden, basically in every possible way. But Royal doesn't really fix any of those things you brought up, other than smoothing out a lot of the rougher edges and friction points in quality of life areas (well, and making the bad gay stereotype scene a bit better, but I still think P4 has P5 beat in bad scenes of that type as well; of course they're all still bad and unecessary). If you didn't like the characters in the first place, Royal doesn't change that. Or fix the pacing, it's actually even longer mostly (I clocked ~110 hours in vanilla, ~140 hours in Royal). But I'm always confused when people say that P5 has slow pacing compared to P4, like... did we play the same game? P4 has almost no plot or momentum to it whatsoever by comparison, and a very similarly slow start. But I was hooked on P5 immediately, especially due to the structure of the storytelling.

But I don't mean to complain about P4G too much, I still found it to be a very good and fun game. It's just that coming off of P5, it definitely felt dated and like a step down in most areas. But I know a lot of people love it more, so it could just be a me thing shrugs

I played it on 3DS VC for the first time ever a few years back, and DK 94 is an absolutely incredible game. It better be in the launch lineup for GameBoy.

But yeah I get what you mean with really craving the chance to play some retro games on Switch. Nintendo's drip feed is obnoxious. I ended up playing some N64 games last year on Wii U VC like Pokemon Snap and Paper Mario because N64 NSO still wasn't announced at the time.

Nah, but seriously: They actually did improve the localization, so your second point may be fixed. (I disagree with the others tho, even in vanilla P5).

I could make a whole thread on this, and maybe I will someday, but I'll try to sum it up.

My problems with Persona 5's writing are a little complex, and while the localization of P5 wasn't great (a stark contrast to the excellent work on Persona 4) the problems are deeper than that. I found the game was extremely uneven, it felt like it was written by a dozen different people, none of whom spoke to each, over the course of like 5 years. The opening act is great but then it falls off a cliff quality-wise. I said earlier the characters were unlikable, but to put it more nuancedly: the party characters, for the most part, felt very flat. Most of them didn't have much of a character arc other than "wow, that thing I/someone I know did was bad. Lesson learned!" This had a cascading effect where they don't add anything substantial to other characters stories. Scenes will play out in the latter half of the game where characters who were introduced and had their stories conclude earlier on will have nothing meaningful to say or do other than "wow, you're right" or "I agree" or "this is messed up." It gets exhausting because at some point it feels like I can see the draft notes saying "Character A hasn't said something in 20 minutes" in the final product. Characters will say things for no other reason than to remind you they're there.

It's been like 5 years since I played it so I don't remember all the details but I didn't even finish it because the game was such a disappointment to me. I understand that I'm in the minority there though haha

So I haven't played Golden, maybe it ruins the game, I can't say. But P4's central murder mystery kept me engaged from start to finish. I didn't even finish P5, I finished Futaba's bit and gave up.

Maybe someday (if Royal comes to Game Pass????) I'll give it another shot.

I don’t think Golden ruins it, I believe it’s mostly stuff at the end (much like Royal). I just personally found the murder mystery to be way too… slow and simple, I guess? Like a single episode of an anime stretched out to fill a whole season, if that makes sense. Whereas in P5 it felt more like each individual “palace chapter” was an anime episode that took place during a season, staying fairly episodic but there were bits and pieces in each one that advanced the main overall plot that eventually wrapped up in the season finale. If that analogy made any kind of sense, lol.

P4 does have a lot more “slice of life” character bits to it since it focuses less on big important events overall, and I know a lot of people prefer that, but it’s just not my thing. I’m more of a plot guy overall.

Personally, Persona 5 and Three Houses were the two games that made me give up on JRPGs forever after 30+ years playing them. It had been a long time coming (probably starting back with FF13), but when two games that are so widely loved seem absolutely terrible to me then it feels like it's time to leave the genre behind. It doesn't help that I have never liked manga or anime - that what initially drew me to the genre was the gameplay, art and music. I guess the story / pacing issues were therefore always going to drive me off eventually.

For what it's worth, I really liked P4G. It had problems, but I really liked it.

Yep, this is exactly how I felt about P5, and also what kept me engaged in P4.

Yeah, I can see where you're coming from, there are definitely some issues with the character writing. I still really enjoyed the cast overall, though.

I think Persona 5 had lots of issues during development though, right? Now that those issues have (hopefully) been ironed out and Atlus has (I assume) a much bigger budget for Persona going forward, Persona 6 will hopefully be a lot more polished on the writing front.

Can't wait until Scenario Weeboload happens and I spend several hours complaining about all the JRPGs coming to Switch because I still haven't figured out how to live without sleep and therefore don't have the time for them.

but you bet your ass I'll buy Fantasian, Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters, Persona 4 Golden, new Fire Emblem, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, and Triangle Strategy as soon as I can

Here's my blue-sky dream list, but I'm not expecting ANY of these in February.
  • Metroid Prime Remastered (this is the most likely of all my list)
  • New Donkey Kong
  • New F-Zero
  • New Mario Strikers
  • New Mario & Luigi RPG (bonus points if they include Donkey Kong or Wario/Waluigi)
  • Golden Sun 4 (now's as good a time as ever with the success of Octopath, Bravely Default, etc. Although I'm not confident in Camelot anymore...)
  • Puyo Puyo 99
  • Breath of the Wild 2 official title and release date (but I'm assuming this comes closer to "E3")
  • Metroid Dread update: Boss Rush mode
  • Goldeneye for NSO+
  • Game Boy/ GBC on NSO+
    • Tetris
    • Super Mario Land 1
    • Super Mario Land 2
    • Super Mario Land 3
    • The Legend of the Zelda: Link's Awakening DX
    • Metroid 2
    • Kirby's Dream Land
    • Donkey Kong 94
    • Mario Golf (Camelot)
    • Mario Tennis (Camelot)
    • Mole Mania (!!!)
    • Gargoyle's Quest
    • For Frog the Bell Tolls (English translation!)
    • Future Titles: Oracle of Ages/Seasons, Pokemon Red/Blue, Wario Land 2/3

I'm not expecting any new major bombas, since we still need details on BOTW, Metroid Prime 4, Bayonetta 3, Pikmin 4, etc...

Dread sales tonight almost as exciting as a direct announcement, as weird as that sounds lmao

Is there a Q&A?

It's been like 5 years since I played it so I don't remember all the details but I didn't even finish it because the game was such a disappointment to me. I understand that I'm in the minority there though haha
you and I had the same experience with p5. I bounced at the bank dungeon, just couldn't justify the blandness anymore. I do want to give Royal a shot though, especially with folks saying they improved the piss-poor localization of the vanilla game

Here's what I think could be shown in the Direct.

Safe
--------
Splatoon 3 new trailer/overview
Advance Wars final trailer
Kirby final trailer

Likely
‐-------
Upcoming casual game reveal (could be outside the direct?)
Next Fire Emblem reveal
Next Sunbreak trailer for MHR

Coin flip
--------
Xenoblade 3 reveal
Bayonetta 3 next trailer
GameBoy catalog on NSO

Probably in June's Direct
--------
Metroid Prime HD reveal
Breath of the Wild 2 next trailer
Mario + Rabbids 2 next trailer

But... it's a Japanese series?
So? Are Japanese studios banned from hiring European artists or something? I actually love it when they try new artstyles, like the Shadows of Valentia. They can try a less anime looking art too. Not only that's possible, I think they will do so sometime in the distant future.

vampire-no.gif

Edit: I only now realised there is also a War of Genesis coming to consoles and it seemingly has no relation to the mobile MMORPG, which popped up first when I did a quick google search. I will leave my initial reaction for everyone to see, so people can point at and ridicule me for it.
the original developers softmax have nothing to do with the new game. its made by line games who bought the IP from after softmax got liquidated. softmax went bankrupt because they were making so many bad games.

I just think if you're looking for something that's "less anime" you could try a different series. There's plenty of people for whom the distinctly Japanese artstyle is part of the appeal of the series, and to lose that in favor of a more European artstyle would be to lose part of the series' identity

Maybe it's because I'm playing Dark Souls 3 but more than themed dungeons I want to see more unique bosses in BotW2. Gimme some dragons to fight, you cowards.
I want them to basically put Shadow of the Colossus into the game by having giant, unique bosses around the very edges of the map. Some of them can be variations on classics (King Dodongo, Queen Gohma, Volvagia, Gleeok, Manhandla), others can be completely new.

My predictionas are, Goldeneye opens and launches on the same day as the direct. Updates on Kirby and Advance Wars, the March and April games respectively. Metroid Prime HD revealed, launches in the summer. Biiiiig blowout on Splatoon 3, which also launches that summer. Maybe a mini surprise to fill the May gap of some kind (Mario maybe?), announcement of a Zelda direct for more info on BOTW2 (and the HD Zeldas yet to come to Switch), Xenoblade 3 ends the show. Third party announcements pepper the remaining time.

I think they'll save Fire Emblem and whatever platformer they have lined up for Christmas for the summer direct, so as not to tread on the toes of upcoming releases

Xenoblade 3 and Fire Emblem would be really cool in this Direct. I'm one of the lone soldiers who apparently didn't love FE: TH, but I admire much of what it was doing and would certainly give a sequel a try. Xenoblade 3 is an instabuy - I don't have much interest in 2 tbh, but XenoblaDE was a highlight of 2020 for me and I'd be thrilled to experience the sequel. Hopefully it's optimized well.

Either way, the E3 direct feels like the one that'll blow the doors off for me as a big Zelda and Metroid boy. Maybe even some Mario news?!

What? I love anime, it's not about that. I just want them to try new things. The series doesn't have an established art direction, gone through several artstyles thorough its history. They're definitely use a new direction in the future (like they went with Hidari on Shadows of Valentia), it's just my suggestion that they try someone outside of Japan.

If not European, they should just go back to Hidari. Or hire someone else, like Titekubo, his art was really good in Sakura Wars. Three Houses is the third game with current artstyle, they need to freshen things up.

I think this topic has come up before but I really want them to also bring back classic regular enemies, the weirdo shit like Dairas and Achemans
