GAH I missed the end of the old ST and lots of cool discussion and stuff just because I was doing something DUMB like working.

@Suswave Your ST was wonderful, it will go down in history for its glorious abyssyness (which is a word... totally!)

@NabiscoFelt I missed the Ender Lilies hot take! And I say: I loved Ender Lilies a lot, it was in my top 3 GOTY for 2021, but it's not the best Igavania, it definitely has some flaws. Mostly due to the last few areas:
The latter third of the game relies way too much on combat, particularly those "lock the door and make you kill everything to advance" rooms. Too much of that, and not enough exploration. The balance between the two was much better in the first half of the game. I also thought that it got a little too grindy/gauntlet-y near the end, as in the fun of exploring the atmospheric melancholy world was replaced by just having to push through sections of the world to try to get to the next save point.

And that last area where the literal atmosphere damages you was just bad, IMO. It was tense and difficult, which I assume was the goal, but it also just wasn't very fun.
Basically for me, Ender Lilies was a 10/10 until around halfway through, then steadily dropped to around an 8.5/10 by the end. The ending itself is good, though!

I think that while the atmosphere, music, and vibe of Ender Lilies is pretty much unparalleled, there are lots of Igavanias that are overall better games. Hollow Knight for sure, and probably most of the literal Igavanias. But still a great game!
I can see where you're coming from, though personally I didn't really run into that problem, I found the latter areas to be pretty consistent with the rest of the game, honestly.

I can't actually think of many "lock door until you kill all the enemies" rooms. Like, maybe one or two, and those mostly in the mid game castle areas. Maybe I didn't realize some of them though

As far as my actual hot take goes, I wouldn't really call HK an Igavania, and personally I'm not enamored with the Igavania design philosophy. The two actual Castlevania ones I've played, SoTN and Aria, have been excellent, and honestly considering them in totality I'm not sure my hot take stands. I really didn't like Bloodstained so I'm confident that Ender Lilies is better than that at least

My original take was mostly coming from a gameplay standpoint, since I think Ender Lillies has a better take on the Spirit/Soul/whatever system that became a staple of Igavanias, since it removes the RNG and grinding elements. Also it just has more involved and (imo) straight up better combat, so each new skill feel more meaningful.

Ah! I get you, sorry about that. That makes more sense. As far as souls/etc. and pure combat goes, then you're probably right. I'm not sure there's an Igavania that I like better on that front. And is Hollow Knight an Igavania... hmmm. Maybe, maybe not :p.

I have been convinced to buy Ender Lillies.
It has one of my (admittedly very short list) Top 2 moments in gaming of the year in it! Spoilers for Ender Lilies and Returnal, since I feel like mentioning them specifically now:

The entire ascent up to fight the organ-music boss, with how that specific song plays into the storyline and background, is just chef's kiss. It's stunningly good.

The moment after you beat the first boss, step out into the rain-soaked landscape, and the main theme starts playing and the vocals kick in... goosebumps for days

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Torna is peak Xenoblade.
I'm still pretty early on but I'm looking to agree with that. Combat seems to be improved over the already great Xenoblade 2 (though I haven't unlocked all the systems yet) and the general vibe is closer to 2 than 1 so far which is a good sign for me. Soundtrack is excellent but that's kinda a given. Like seeing the mix of new characters and Xenoblade 2 cast (though of course the returning cast is a bit different from the main game) and the chemistry between the characters is good so far. Xenoblade is one of the few series where story is a big deal for me so we'll see how it all plays out but I'm optimistic on that front.

So yeah overall, regretting putting this off so long

Nintendo Direct Mini in January? To soon? Impossible because of Pokémon or will Nintendo set the internet on fire again?

The thing that sets it over the edge for me is that it trims a lot of the fat that I was not particularly fond of in XB2 (e.g. gachaesque Blade acquisition), streamlines the experience, and leaves you with what worked well in the first place.

And the jazzy tunes. I needed those, even though I never knew it.

I am planning to will a Golden Sun game either remake or a new entry.
I want to say I helped will Mario Golf and Advance Wars into existence this year, haven’t decided what I want to help will in this year lol. Hope you get Golden Sun! Would be cool!

Not gonna happen, unless it's a Kirby Direct. I do see a Kirby trailer coming in January anyways (if it's March then we'll know about it before February).

This is why I hope XB3 will be XB2's (or XBX's) scale with Torna's streamlined battle/party system.

And that's why the rumor that Xenoblade 3 will feature "more character models on screen at once than any previous title, accounting for both playable characters and enemies" kinda worries me.

Is there anybody here like me who doesn't drink alcohol?
I remember looking forward to drinking when I was young, but learned in my teens that I didn't have a taste for it (same with smoking). It's for the best though since my dad's side of the family tends to have liver problems later in life and I wouldn't want to potentially exacerbate that in the future.

Aww, yeah!! Fresh new thread!

I'm glad to be here with you all, even if I don't contribute as much at all! I find that because I don't play games as much, and I don't play as many games as the rest of you, that I really don't have much to say. I just like listening to y'alls' discussions. That's one reason why I appreciate the 'Yeah!' function so much!

Over the past two years that I've followed this community, I appreciate how welcoming and warm it is! Here's to having a (hopefully) fantastic 2022! There is so much to look forward to, and I hope that you all have other awesome 2022 goals beyond your backlogs! (Backlogs are eternal bahaha)

Thank you, Raccoon and Skittzo, for your hard work in running this thread as well!

also this is the year of splat3 and botw2 guys, get excited

I know I am definitely in the minority here, but I would not mind if XB3 also had the same overall scale as Torna. It just works well for the game, imo, and there aren't a whole lot of JRPGs out there that don't take you upwards of 50 hours to play through the story, without even accounting for sidequests.

Welp, caught Covid. Feeling like I do, I'm tempted to call it a night now. It's not as if 2021 deserves a sendoff, after everything it's put is through.

I do appreciate Torna's tighter narrative and more focused world, for what it is. Being a dlc/expansion it's pretty amazing that it's even as big as it is. And being a fan of Chrono Trigger (in case I haven't mentioned that before) I respect a good 20-30 hour RPG.

Forget Splatoon 3
Forget Legends Arceus
Forget Bayonetta 3
Forget Project Eve
Forget Monark
Forget FF16, and
FORGET BOTW2

Give me something to eat in 2022 Monolith Soft. 🙏

Working on the above titles don't count

Damn, hope you have a speedy recovery. We DK fans got to stick close together.

Well, not too close.

It’s finally 2022 on the east coast so I’m indulging in some carbonated grape juice. Now to slowly descend into madness until we (maybe) get a Nintendo Direct.

Happy New Year everyone

Happy New Year fami, I hope in 2022 this place continues to be the equivalent of a well-stocked bunker to take shelter in from the rest of the Internet. Cheers!
