StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

I actually think launching a new The Legend of Zelda in the fifth year of switch2's release is high time, we're about to transition from a seven year one console lifecycle to an eight year one console lifecycle so a new Legend of Zelda as a second half of the console lifecycle entry would be appropriate
Let's pray!

we would count 2026 as year 1 of Switch sucessor(just like 2018 is considered year 1 of Switch) meaning 2028/2029 would be year 3/4 of Switch sucessor lifecycle.

As I've already said, I just don't see a new The Legend of Zelda being released in 2029, the development cycle is going to keep getting longer unless Nintendo actively scales down production, and in reference to what I've said before, EPD3 didn't officially set up a new title until last November or so, and a late 2029 release is the fastest possible speed.

Interesting that the SD Association is following up on the micro SD Express for Switch article. (However, this is about Switch 1.)
What benefits would SD express have on OG Switch in comparison to normal SD cards? The read and write spead of the memory controller are very limited, I don’t really see the point in advertising them for Switch.

None, as the cpu is bottlenecking even non express cards.

Nintendo is highly aware of how and where they get their money and no amount of tech enthusiasm will sway them from that.

$400 USD is the ceiling of the next Switch. Not the floor.
Software and subscriptions. If they price it too high, it'd be an entry barrier.

But then again, they can always introduce a Lite model down the way that's less of an entry barrier.

problem is Mario is less consistent than Zelda. I don't think Bowser's Fury will be a one off, but Nintendo likes to change things up every so often with Mario. who'd a thunk we'd get 3D World after Mario Galaxy 2 (and who'd thunk we'd even get Mario Galaxy 2?)
Only 10 years ago, the discourse of online people and journalists assured with certainty that Nintendo had finished with Mario sandbox.

Mario's next game being an open-world/zone platformer ala Sonic Frontiers would be the funniest outcome.

Frankly I have no clue what I want out of 3d Mario games at this stage. Practically all of the ones I've played are game of the year nominee material at worse, but there's a lot of indies competing in the space of "Quality 3D Platformers". Even in 2017 alone, A Hat in Time is one of the cutest games ever released, so I genuinely don't know man...

Maybe they should just give Mario a chainsaw. They've already given him a gun, at this stage anything goes.

I think the Mario team is precisely the team where I just figure "let them do whatever they want". I have utmost trust that whatever they decide to do, they will do competently and having fun along the way, be it "Odyssey 2" or "Sunshine 2" or "4D WORLD" or "Open World Mario" or whatever idea comes at them from the left field. They probably have some pressure on them internally, be it self inflicted or not, at being a killer app for new hardware, so they're likely to come swinging no matter what the project is.

4DS confirmed.

Now I want super mario 4d world where mario jumps trough space and time.

With 3d Mario's development being quite a bit smaller than Zelda's, and with Nintendo giving 8 years to work on a new 3d Mario, we're likely to be looking forward to the next very groundbreaking Mario installment

I think it's the switch2 game lineup that's the most exciting thing to look forward to, the new 3d Mario after eight years and the Legend of Zelda series that got rid of the BOTW-TOTK framework in the second half of the switch2 life cycle. The only thing I'm not sure about right now is Metroid Prime4, there must be a lot of pressure on Retro right now so if it doesn't do well Retro will be scorned

With a 3D Mario, I like to have better desert and winter levels. The ones in odyssey were pretty boring to me. I like to have the comeback of the penguins, especially since the Mario Movie. And maybe get to use items next to power-ups, like a snowboard to dash off those snowy hills or a submarine in the water levels.

But overall, I would love to have DLC worlds in the next 3D Mario, aswell as online multiplayer minigames inside the worlds.

I don't think the next Zelda will get rid of the BOTW-TOTK framework. Rather iterate on it.

I can't imagine what crazy world interactions they will pull off on new hardware.

It means you didn't watch the interview with Eiji Aonuma and Hidemaro Fujibayashi at the end of last year, and it's already been confirmed that the next installment will be an entirely new series and not an extension of the BOTW framework.

Depends on what you mean by that, they wont reuse the map or anything. But there's no reason to discard all the awesome tech.

I think it's the right behavior not to predict what exactly EPD3 is trying to do, and while it's safe to assume that their future direction is to go for open world and freedom as the absolute core of the gameplay, they're committed to bringing a completely different gameplay and experience with each installment, so I'm very much looking forward to the sequels that are made free from the BOTW framework

It will still be open-air and use the chemistry engine and their tech. That's what they meant by BOTW/TOTK framework.

If we take Ocarina of Time as a reference, the multiplication design or systematic design is much more extendable and malleable at the gameplay level, so I don't think the "framework of BOTW" is equivalent to the previous "framework of Ocarina of Time".(But note that there's no guarantee that Hidemaro Fujibayashi will still stick to open air, and after BOTW was finished he already thought he might choose to make a "close air" if open air became the new norm in the Legend of Zelda series.)

I'm seeing it as just stressing the point that even these fancy new cards will still work for everything you're already using microSD for.

Will there be any news in April? I say 50-50.
I believe if they are going to have any discussion on new hardware in their fiscal forecast than they will have a press release late April/ very early May announcing Next generation is due by end of fiscal year. If Switch 2 is further out next year than we won't hear a peep. Next 5-6 weeks will be telling.

aye, it's designed to be BC with UHS-I slots, which is the majority of slots out there.

there's not much benefit here since you have to redownload games anyway as games are still per-physical system

I 100% expect Nintendo to make an announcement before their investors meeting in May. This could end up being very underwhelming. It could be very similar to April 2016 when Nintendo announced their next generation hardware "NX" would be releasing the following year in March and they would share more details at a later date.

"It's time for you to gather around & listen... for we need to have a long talk about the state of the video game industry in 2024 & its concerning, uncertain future."

it's the streamlabs backlog episode (featuring the long awaited shareholder chad question that generated a few chuckles)

I mean honestly, none of my friends have the same gaming interests as me either. 🤣

We all have Switches but I'm the only one who is into the Xeno series, I'm the only one who digs deep into indies and retro-style games, I'm the only one chasing JRPG (and JRPG-style) games.. We do all line up on Zelda and a small few of my friends play Kirby and Yoshi, but most of what they play is the sort of stuff I don't: Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Smash...

But the fact that there's such a huge span of tastes being served on Switch I think is part of why it's been so successful.
I tried getting into the xeno series but every time I try I legit just cant get a grip on the combat idk whats wrong with me. I need to try again though because everything I see about xenoblade just has me in aww and I wanna get immersed into that universe so badly!

Oh we already did that loop a couple days ago 😉
Maybe we should make a new loop...

"I know what the successor will be called...

The Nintendo Switch REMAKE!"
"It should be called Nintendo Switch REMASTERED"
"It's a REMAKE because it has completely new architecture..."
"It's a REMASTER because it still uses ARM..."
"REMAKE because something something DLSS."
"REMASTER because something something increased CUDA cores, just more bandwidth."
"REMAKE because there is a gimmick!"
"REMASTER because there is NO gimmick!"
ad nauseam...

Actually, streamlining these opinions in teams is a great idea…

We so not need remake vs remaster discourse in here please 😭
