StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (New Staff Post, Please read)

Maybe we should make a new loop...

"I know what the successor will be called...

The Nintendo Switch REMAKE!"
"It should be called Nintendo Switch REMASTERED"
"It's a REMAKE because it has completely new architecture..."
"It's a REMASTER because it still uses ARM..."
"REMAKE because something something DLSS."
"REMASTER because something something increased CUDA cores, just more bandwidth."
"REMAKE because there is a gimmick!"
"REMASTER because there is NO gimmick!"
ad nauseam...
Nah, it’s only a.. Switch glorified DLC

Y’all think the switch 2 will be capable of doing graphic mode and performance mode. (I know it’ll mostly depend on game developers, but I’m more curious if Nintendo would give us more options.)

Since we saw Sony and Microsoft doing it more this gen.

Like hypothetically, would something like the next Mario kart game offer fps option to its players this gen or can we expect the status quo.

I don't expect any modes from Nintendo. same with third parties. any game that comes from other systems definitely won't have it; Series S is hit or miss with them

Not a chance, Nintendo is all about finetuning the best possible experience possible. They aren't gonna be offering those things unless their games will be targeting 60 fps more often than we think.

I hope my question for Streamlabs helped people understand that Nate isn't sitting down and chatting with these inside sources. Its nothing like getting a call from John at Ubisoft describing everything in detail about what he saw at Gamescom behind closed doors. It is very clear that he receives nuggets of info here and there, probably via email, but this is not a Q&A scenario where Nate is getting the full inside scoop. So very limited details coming from a variety of sources, but the details are delivered in a vague way. Imagine opening an email and reading, "pretty cool seeing Zelda BotW at Gamescom with instant loading times.", and that is all it says. I think this is important for everybody to understand, because I believe many people including some members here believe Nate has a clear picture of what is going on but simply wont tell us, and that is not the case. The picture is more often than not anything but clear.

Status quo imo.

Perhaps the next time I wake up and see dozens more pages in the threads is only likely to be when Nintendo confirms that the next generation console is officially announced(not 20XX) in any way or more delay.

And what even is the difference between a successor and an upgrade :p

I mean, if we look at it like that, PS5 is just an upgraded PS4, with a new gen AMD processor and GPU, so therefore, not an actual successor...

I'm partially joking, but it is, true in the sense that it's just using newer PC-level hardware with specific configuration, alongside a fairly unique SSD configuration and new OS, which is different how previous generations have largely been handled. Xbox Series S/X is also exceptionally similar, with the reusing of the OS as well.

Why are people expecting leaks during April if the hardware isn’t out till next year and won’t start mass producing at the end of the year?

is it because of GDC?

Not sure, other than start of fiscal year could result in (unintentional) leaks from partners because of the usual reports? Other than that, no clue.

Nintendo's game design philosophy kind of clashes with that approach. That's why there aren't any options to finetune the sound mix, the brightness, the contrast, SDR or HDR or many accessibility options in their first party games in general. They want to sell you a particularly polished experience, with all the care that went into it, but a single experience nonetheless. Their way or the highway. Fortunately for them, their way is more times than not welcome.

How many more generations do we get? Silicon process shrinks maybe end by Switch 3? Could we be at an end to power improvements by then and at that point it's that we get w amount of compute for x watts of heat waste which gives us about y hours of play time for z volume/weight in battery?

Do they even bother with a Switch 4? Does a stationary console just become w amounts of compute for x watts of waste heat at y cost to manufacture?

The question is if they continue the Switch line after Switch “2“ and if they drop gimmicks and innovation and play it “safe“ like many people claim (without evidence). Also there could be breakthroughs in battery tech (especially now it’s very important for the car industry) and other materials for chips, new rendering technologies, more specialized chips etc..
There are just too many unknowns in this equation to somewhat realistically predict the future.

Anyway, Nintendo jumped off the power race in the 2000s, they‘ll continue to improve power within means as long as it‘s feasible (and necessary), but I don’t see them stopping making new generations with stagnant processing power.

You can see how the Tegra X1 in the Nintendo Switch holds up to other mobile hardware in the past 7 years the Switch has been out

More specifically, ctrl+F, type in "Tegra X1" and take note of its benchmark number
Then either peruse the list going up or ctrl+f again, type in "Snapdragon 865" (a Cortex-A77 ARM SoC, something one generation behind the Orin to give an idea of where NX2 potentially stands) and you'll answer that question for yourself.

I mean, if we look at it like that, PS5 is just an upgraded PS4, with a new gen AMD processor and GPU, so therefore, not an actual successor...

Well remembering how much I hyped up AMD's Bulldozer, being disappointed with the benchmarks to eventually holding out hope for Jim Keller's work the Zen architecture, even I knew Sony hit the jackpot (at the time) jumping from the Jaguar architecture to Zen 2 in terms of potential. Though a lot of that improvement is more functional than practical. Graphics didn't make that much of a change but again, still a reasonable jump in performance and effects too.

Why are people expecting leaks during April if the hardware isn’t out till next year and won’t start mass producing at the end of the year?

is it because of GDC?

Because Nintendo will be rolling out their upcoming fiscal forecast, and to leave investors completely in the dark when Nintendo does intend to release a brand new console within that fiscal year would be pretty egregious, bordering on misinforming investors of what to actually expect for sales for the year. So even if Nintendo isn't under any legal responsibility to announce it, there would certainly be some pressure from investors to have some idea of what is going on. Lets face it, its likely that the forecast for Switch hardware will drop by 30-50% year over year with software sales seeing a similar decline. Handing this forecast over to investors with no vision for what is next will go over like a lead balloon. This can all be avoided by simply putting out a PR statement that new hardware is coming this fiscal year and we will have more to share at a later date.

I 100% expect Nintendo to make an announcement before their investors meeting in May. This could end up being very underwhelming. It could be very similar to April 2016 when Nintendo announced their next generation hardware "NX" would be releasing the following year in March and they would share more details at a later date.
Underwhelming for whom??? This Thread would thrive off of that piece of information, at least what we discussing will finally be seen as a reality

CPUs never had anything to do with graphics, though. These current gen games so far clearly would never run on Jaguar cores, let alone at 60 FPS not even in a million years... Only four games have been stuck at 30 fps so far, this cannot be understated. Also, the gen is far from over.

I am once again here to say I’m right and told you so, 2025 was the most obvious year.

Anyway such a late release definitely puts it back on where it was intended to be in the tech landscape at the time of its release , as it will launch more outdated than it otherwise has been, I don’t think it will have any real consequences other than some companies using it as an excuse to not port things.

I wonder if it has any larger ramifications for the fire of Nintendo hardware though, will the pro or lite version be delayed accordingly or released early.

As now a lot of 2nd year games can pretty easily fit into the first year if they wanted to change things up.

It might be the recipe for a year to surpass 2017/2023/2022

And what even is the difference between a successor and an upgrade :p
successor = brand new hardware architecture, new graphical technology capabilities and possibly new hardware gimmicks (eg: dualsense triggers)
upgrade = same/same-y architecture, just slightly or decently more powerful. mid gen refresh.

Except there was an internal delay going from 2024 to 2025, so you struck out on that, sorry. (or rather, lucked into that, nothing more)
That didn’t change what happened, if they were behind schedular than their date was wrong, and mine was right.

Either way that’s not the point that was largely a joke (even though I’m right)

Pretty much like how the switch was launched, since it were indie games and first party games that were delivering, quality experience.

Plus not having ports in the first year of a brand new shiny system, can have huge ramifications on if consumers are willing to buy the game.

like the first year of any system is the best time to strike. Especially since most people anre willing to buy and try games, with their new system and I personally believe third party developers will have steep competition this time with each other this time around. Not like the switch in which Ubisoft and Bethesda profited greatly when they had no competition with third party developers.

But that’s my cent of the matter.

I am watching Nate's podcast. Man, the only thing I would have to say about Xbox future is that if the Nintendo Switch 2 is in the realms of "Good enough" I think that would be satisfactory to those who want an alternative towards Sony and you have the combination of Nintendo exclusive along with Xbox future catalogue.

I am going to continue the rest.

PS5 Pro is introducing ML accelated scaling/ New RT accelerators. Xbox One X is a lot more powerful than One. Series S Is a a new gen, but in some ways weaker than One X. Not to mention Wii was basically a GC.

I really think the difference is marketing as much as anything else.

Edit: Also I think it is about rendering techniques that are incompatible with older hardware, such as mesh shading.

"Nintendo Switch 2 will launch in early 2025. We will offer further details at a later date."

If this ends up being the initial reveal, this will be completely underwhelming compared to something like the October 2016 teaser trailer for Switch. A simple PR statement like this would really only be confirming what we already believe and doesn't add anything new.

That's exactly how the NX was basically announced.

you think Nintendo will do one more redesign of switch 1/lite?
(either before or after switch 2)

Sort of a unifying of supply/reduction of cost sort of thing? maybe even bring it more in line with switch 2 design philosophy
Kind of how they did with the NES after the SNES was out.
FamicomHVC-101.jpg
SNES-Mod1-Console-Set.jpg

2 clearly distinct products and price points, similar design language.
That way you have a reduced cost final push for switch 1 and a version that sits on the shelf along side switch 2 at a lower price point. Future proof the old switch for a few years of residual sales.

OR
Will they just drop price and sell through whatever they have to get rid of it....

or they don't drop the price and just sell until it's gone

Technically Nintendo had made mention of NX back in 2015 at an investors meeting. Regardless, this isn't the point. My whole point is that if the initial reveal is a simple PR statement rather than a full blown reveal like we use to get back with consoles at E3, this will be very underwhelming.

What's your read if May investor meeting comes and goes without a mention at all?

Forecast of just Switch and Switch software can't be too promising to investors, I'm curious if there would be much fallout if Nintendo is still silent on future hardware. It just feels like we have been in this cycle of setting deadlines on when things have to happen for so long.

what hurt SS was the memory setup. with 12GB or more, Nintendo can avoid a lot of the problems. so fingers crosses
If the delay means that their choice of RAM can decrease in price a smidge or they can safely pay for 16GB of RAM in the final product, we won in the long run.

If Nintendo thinks that they can sell a good amount of Switch 1 hardware and software this FY they could still hold on next gen announcement. Especially if switch 2 could release in Q2 2025.

Edit: I wouldn’t be surprised if we see another switch restyle/sku before the next gen reveal at this point.
