Thank you for the monthly check-in and reassurance. You don't have to do it, but it helps. Hope you have a happy holidays and a good new year. When I have sufficient confirmation on the information I'm chasing, I'll provide an update.

Go where? I don't exactly see AMD or Intel developing hardware that suits a hybrid gaming device, nor hardware that offers the same trickery that can be achieved at low power like Tensor or RT cores. Nvidia has been and (if AMD or Intel don't get something in the pipe Nintendo could transition to) will continue to be the right partner for what Nintendo wants to achieve, much like IBM and ATi were the right partners for them at the time of the GameCube's release, because good alternative solutions weren't exactly presenting themselves back then, either.Yea, but Nintendo is not married to Nvidia. A very big incentive to stick with them, is keeping compatibility. If Nvidia can’t provide that on RISC-5, Nintendo might go elsewhere.

Imagination Technologies claims to prioritise interoperability between different CPU cores and IPs. So perhaps Imagination Technologies could be Nintendo's option in the future?MIPS

Intel’s RT in alchemist is ahead of Ampere and on par with their Ada, aka it isn’t a slouch. It is just hurt by software at the current time and lack of scaled up hardware.Wait, I thought Intel has been working on their own dedicated hardware for RT and matrix math. Like I'm pretty sure that the Alchemist cards have RT and XMX units. Not saying that they're on par with Nvidia, but I don't think that Intel's ignoring those areas.
I think Terrell's talking about APUs with respect to Intel. In that case, Meteor Lake's iGPU is rumoured to have dedicated ray tracing hardware, but not dedicated XMX hardware. So assuming the rumour is accurate, Intel is currently only half way there in terms of providing the complete package, iGPU wise.Wait, I thought Intel has been working on their own dedicated hardware for RT and matrix math. There’s a demo?! I check this site and Era multiple times a day, how did I miss this haha.Playing through the Sonic Frontiers demo on my Switch and god damn this is butt ugly. I’m not surprised but ew lol. Would love this to be Drake enhanced with its DLC next year
There are more players in the mobile space, than those though. Qualcom, imagination, powerVR, Mediatek, Mali to name a few.Go where? OK, can they match what Nvidia has on offer? Because it's not a solution if the product offering isn't up to snuff, even if they can provide a similar-ish SoC product. There are more players in the mobile space, than those though. Qualcom, imagination, powerVR, Mediatek, Mali to name a few.
I don't know. The only way you can find out is if you are Nintendo and shops around for offers to design the soc for their next platform.OK, can they match what Nvidia has on offer? From what I've seen of the technology developments elsewhere of the companies previously mentioned, Qualcomm comes the closest and I don't think they compare well to Nvidia. Perhaps one of them could surprise me, but in this moment, I doubt it.I don't know. And without the Android overhead, games run great compared to their Shield counterparts. In hindsight, nvidia's value is the NVN API paired with a fairly beefy mobile SoC design for 2016. I honestly don't think anyone back at Switch announcement had any inkling the kind of games it will eventually run. Maybe some guys inside nvidia and Nintendo knew but the conversation at the time did not revolve around that because our frame of reference was ShieldTV using the same chip.
There was the also the rumor that NX ran a modified Android, which didn't help matters. And without the Android overhead, games run great compared to their Shield counterparts.

Reviews for this were kinda...rough, though a lot of that is probably to do with flaws in the Windows on Arm implementation rather than the hardware itself. But it still gets its teeth kicked in my an M1.the biggest problem with Qualcomm and ARM is that they don't have any large gpu designs. in theory, they can add more cores, but they don't have anything like that. the closest Qualcomm has are their Windows Box

Early NX rumors had the Hybrid Console part right, but imagined a Wii U 2, with a smart dock and a dumb portable console that mostly streamed games from the dock. You could take it with you "anywhere" and connect to your dock at home via the internet, or in "offline mode" run stripped down miniversions of the games that played just on the second screen.Omg really??
That sounds absolutely ridiculous!
Like in what alternate universe could this had ever been a thing??

Wow I didn’t know about any of these rumours back then, even though I remember digging through message boards for any morsel of info on NX. The fact that we know so much more about Drake sorta dampens the excitement for me compared to back then.Early NX rumors had the Hybrid Console part right, but imagined a Wii U 2, with a smart dock and a dumb portable console that mostly streamed games from the dock. Almost every rumor and leak about the NX was wrong, even the ones that seemed right. The "hybrid console" bit got right out of the gate, but even things that seem legit in retrospect weren't.
There was a rumor about modular controllers that sounds like Joy-Cons... except it was based on a Nintendo patent that is obviously not the Joy-Cons. It was a Wii U like Gamepad where the button units and joysticks could be swapped out individually allowing you to have four joysticks, or all buttons, or all D-pads, or some wild, personalized combination. Clearly not Joy-Cons.
There was a rumor that the NX would use cartridges... also based on two patents that weren't the Switch. One patent was for syncing cartridge media with a spinning plates disk drive that had higher storage but lower speed, obviously not anything the Switch has or does. The other was a patent for installing games from a digital store to an SD card and a specific method of keeping them patched.
There was a rumor that the NX would have enhanced force feedback that sounds like HD rumble... but again, it was based on a patent that isn't HD rumble. HD rumble is just Nintendo's brand name for the small third part actuators in the joy-cons. The joy-cons are too small for traditional rumble, the actuators are the only small enough solution, the "HD" parts of it are just a nice bonus that comes along for the ride. The patent was for using the speaker on a device - like a smartphone - in pairing with traditional rumble hardware. Not HD Rumble.
Remember, these are the rumors that are now regarded as retrospectively legit because they matched what we got. But it is, at best, abandoned ideas that Nintendo happened along while experimenting with the Switch, and at worst, random coincidences that matched up. The Force Feedback patent seems to target smartphones, for goodness sake.
The feeling that the NX era was a leaky ship came from the fact that the NX was announced well before it launched, so there were years of fake leaks and speculation that all seemed like they could be legit. And because fakers are constantly copying each other and the primary narrative, they all seemed in sync.
The best info we have on NuSwitch says that Nintendo aren't experimenting with a wildly new form factor. If not, you wouldn't expect patents on new control schemes to be leaking anyway, but we also don't have an announced device, and a fan community mostly burnt out from 2021 on Pro rumors. So there isn't as fertile ground for inadvertently correct bullshit to take root.

But yeah for that game, since I won’t get to it for a while anyway, I’m gonna wait to see if/when it gets patched when Drake comes out next summer. If Drake’s a phantom somehow or the patched version still looks below par I’ll go for the PS5 version.

I was completely unaware that the difficulty of ensuring backward compatibility could vary that much from game to game, it's very interesting. Does this mean that some games are particularly demanding in terms of RAM and power, or is that irrelevant?Proper "ports" like Mario Sunshine & Galaxy in 3D Collection could work, but emulation as it's currently used for NSO titles would be hard to optimize on current Switch as far as I know.
Maybe not as problematic as SNES on standard 3DS, but it could still be a reason - and a selling point - to make those Drake exclusives.
They've allowed pretty bad N64 emulation state though, especially at release, so I really don't know if they'd go for it.
I believe so, with one example being the Steam Deck's display.I wonder if it's possible to ship a screen that can support 30Hz, 40Hz and 60Hz refresh rate, without having to resort to making a 120Hz panel. Unless I'm horribly mistaken, would that high a refresh rate affect the overall battery life?
