StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

The main reason I asked my question was because Necro said retailers would prepare preorders. Seemed early to have preorders for a system coming in September.

Also, I’m sure if it’s a full blown presentation Nate or some other insider will find out by the end of this month.
Preorders for the console, or games I wonder 🤔

3rd party: Eldin Ring, RDR2, Cod, Cyber Punk 2077, Fort Nite, Avatar to name a few. MK1 and new elder scrolls?
Funny thing is I think that fortnite has the highest chances of being a launch title. And I mean higher than a 3D Mario or Metroid Prime 4. If the rumors were true about the Matrix demo than of course Nintendo would give them a devkit considering there position in the gaming industry.

what if you need to carry a laptop? and books?
If it's so much you can't fit an 8" tablet in there, a 6.2" tablet with big bezels was already a no-go.

As for myself, I very much doubt the next system will be thicker, except maybe the Joy-Con getting grips, but it fits perfectly fine in a laptop bag beside the laptop.

For those travelling with a heavy premium on space, Nintendo Switch is already pushing it. And as you said, the amount is... Negligible. So why work on negligible benefits when a substantial benefit, a bigger screen for tabletop mode and to properly take advantage of 1080p, is on the table?

I feel like I'm not making my core thought here clear

whether or not 6.2 or 8 was a no-go is entirely dependent on individual circumstances

And as you said, the amount is... Negligible.
I did not say this. I said that to most forum gamers it was negligible

I feel like I haven't stressed enough that if the switch 1 were 8 inches I just would not have taken it on the school bus

VR is interesting but still niche, just because people find it too inconvenient to use. Just look at how PSVR is doing.

If VR happens with Switch, it will be a sideshow, via an add on shell with specific software made for it as a curiosity.

DLSS Quality at 1080p looks worse than Native 1080p but significantly better than 720p; but interestingly DLSS 4K UP (so 720p internal) looks significantly better than 1080p native most of the time.

Dlss image clarity doesn't just depend on input resolution, but also output. An output resolution of 4k makes lower resolutions like 720 or 900p punch WAY above their weight, even compared to 1080 DLAA.

I'm currently preparing a video showcasing that, but it's taking so long I doubt it's coming out before the console lol

You said "most", not merely forum members, so yes, you did. To most, it is negligible. That's a completely fair, and I would say true, statement.

whether or not 6.2 or 8 was a no-go is entirely dependent on individual circumstances
You have made that point perfectly clear. But it remains that the impact on the userbase as a whole is negligible. However, I would go even further and say that point is mostly untrue. The Nintendo Switch in a carrying case is HUGE! It's ALREADY a luggable, not a pocketable. This doesn't change that.

There are people like me that already need to make specific adjustments to what we carry to being Switch with us, people far on the other side who never take it anywhere or just carry a huge bag, and then there's people, in the middle, where an inch in the difference makes all the difference. But that is negligible. It's centimeters, not kilograms, the people it affects might be you and I but I'm trying to explain that regardless of how we feel, that doesn't change what Nintendo sees and acts on as a whole.

About preorders and stock… I was thinking, could be feasible an “early access launch” to selected users? They did a similar thing for the New 3DS launch here in Europe, they could soft launch the console on summer to most active switch owners through the MyNintendo Store and then make the “true” launch on September. In this way they could avoid scalpers and they won’t split the revenue with reseller for a good amount of stock.

Next gen only games will probably be released on the “true” launch but they can drop next gen patch for switch 1 games early.

I actually hate this idea specifically because I'm not sure if "the most active Switch users" are the best measurement. I haven't used my Switch very much at all recently, but that's because I've been waiting for the Switch 2 to play a bunch of the games in their best form. I sure wouldn't want to get blocked from buying one for that. I'd say just release the console as early as is feasible.

oh yeah I did in fact say that

fuck

I think it's negligible insofar as nobody actually takes this thing anywhere. for the few who do it's going to be a pain in the ass

But that is negligible. It's centimeters, not kilograms, the people it affects might be you and I but I'm trying to explain that regardless of how we feel, that doesn't change what Nintendo sees and acts on as a whole.
I'm not sure what your point is. I'm not saying it's a bad decision, it's just going to suck for a lot of people. I'll concede it's probably a small proportion but that small proportion amounts to a lot of people

to me it's not worth it. I already hate this piece of shit. but yeah, I'm just one dude and what I think definitely does not, and should not, change what nintendo sees and acts on as a whole

The info we would have needed from the DLSS vs Native video is to compare native 720p vs 1080p using DLSS Quality. That way the rendering resolutions are the same and we can see how much better/worse it looks compared to native 720p. This will be relevant for portable play on SNG.

Additionally, while I haven't watched the video, how recent were the DLSS .dll files they used? Using DLSS Swapper often improves things, and would be very relevant here because the Switch 2 versions would be using much newer DLSS versions.

DF did a video on something similar. 4k UP was way better than native 720p

I actually agree here, I love taking my Switch places! Like, 1" diagonal is the difference between "I need to take less stuff with me to fit this." and "I need to carry this separately.", and it's really teetering on the edge. My perspective though is it's already the proverbial pain in the ass. This changes things little. 🫠

My point is that the measurements are ultimately negligible here, and that you or I are Nintendo fans that move around, and we will accommodate the new device with... Maybe not without a headache, but not with significant pains, and then the number of these people is small to begin with. How many of the people affected will simply start carrying a bigger bag if I want to bring it? I'm going to be one of those immediately.

Though another part of my point is... I think you're too worked up about it. I get that "less portable" isn't what portable fans want out of what is set to be the most significant portable of the decade, but "hate this piece of shit", when you don't know what it does, what it looks like, you don't know how big the bezels are, and so how different the size will actually be. I'm not nearly as concerned with how Nintendo thinks about it as I am with how you feel about it, I would urge you to take a step back and think.

Will this really change things?

You're not on the school bus anymore, and a full laptop bag was never fitting a V1 Switch in it anyway.

Instead, you've expressed a like of tabletop mode, consider it would improve it. Consider the comfort can and likely will be better. That the screen will likely have a wider colour gamut, and brighter highlights, and better consistency.

Consider that even for us portable people, there's benefits to be had if we can accept just a little extra chunk.

Expectations running so high we might legit get:
March - Reveal
February - Presentation
January - Release

TEAM JANUARY STILL WINNING BAYBEEEEEEEE!!!!
The gimmick will be its ability to change the direction of time on the fly.

This feature will only be used for inventory management in Zelda remasters and everyone will inexplicably hate it.

They're going to make a prophet out of you by revealing it this March, doing a Presentation next February, and releasing it in January 2026.

DF did a video on something similar. 4k UP was way better than native 720p

That video does show DLSS looks far superior than the rendering res, but doesn't talk about the comparison to DLSS with the same internal res and lower output res (like 1080p dlss quality for example, or 1440p performance).

In the DLSS discussion, people often say below 1080p there's not enough data but that doesn't track with what I found in my testing : DLSS output resolution is as much, if not MORE of a factor in the final image quality than the internal resolution.

Which is also why the question of how well can [ReDraketed] run DLSS is crucial. And why I'm trying to answer it.

Switch 1 games will not be able to use DLSS not even with next gen patches, they would need to be ported for that.
Porting into a native Switch 2 form is what's meant by "next gen patches".
Now here's the dilemma:
Since they both look the same, from what we think Switch 2 will look like based on all those mockups, how will I know which one's which? And the same goes for my kids. I don't want to keep pulling out the wrong one first.

In conclusion:
There must be a clear differentiator that makes it super easy for people to quickly tell which is the Switch 2. The size won't be enough since the difference isn't that obvious.
I think their intended solution for 95% of people is going to be "Take out the Switch 1 dock and put the Switch 2 dock there".
i was thinking, isn't march too soon for Nintendo to reveal it next console? comsidering the console is rumored to launch on septembre/octobre, shouldn't the console be anounced in april/may istead
Is there anything actually pointing to September with more respectability than that GameShark thing?

Regardless of whether launch is July or November, it's gotta be shown in the next few months, and the difference of a few months isn't going to make much difference on Switch 1 at this point. Might as well let people at GDC actually talk about it without breaking NDAs.

I’m sure 6 is quite a ways out, but is there a remake of Oblivion coming at some point? That would be cool to see on Switch 2.
FTC leak showed plans for an Oblivion remake but plans have changed regarding release date or even existence since the ftc leak said fy 2024. If I remember the leak it was from a document that is like 4+ years old.

Grubb talked about some of the games from the FTC leak awhile ago on a Spawncast episode. I don't remember if he specifically mentioned Oblivion, but I know he mentioned how Doom Year Zero was canned so nothing on document was set in stone. Don't take that document as confirmation of anything.

the Eurogamer/VGC article that stated Nintendo plans to launch Switch sucessor in the second half of this year

That's pretty far from having a specific month to try to reverse engineer when you'd expect to see a reveal, though. July is in the second half of the year, and March would be a pretty late reveal for that.

I mean Eurogamer also says Nintendo is keen to launch even sooner than the "latter part" of the year. Really doesn't mean much at this stage and definitely impossible to infer a specific month.

And "Second Half of the Year" could be as early as July... which amusingly lines up best with the "4 months of production then release" strat they went with for the Switch 1.

I carry the Steam Deck in my backpack along with a 16 inch MacBook Pro, a Kindle and some notebooks on my work commute.

It really is a big whole honking piece of shit, lol. It's mostly the sheer thickness of it in its carrying case that's disruptive. My backpack is not huge, the zipper barely closes.

But I still take it with me cause the games I currently want to play are there and my biweekly work commute is 2 hours long each way 🥺

I would much appreciate a thinner device for the trip.

If we get absolute confirmation that it's H2, I will officially be on Team July 2nd, the exact halfway point of the year.

No it isn't, that's just porting since you are creating a new version of the game and a new SKU.
Next gen patches are small updates to Switch 1 games that will simply tell the game to run at higher resolutions and/or framerates if it's running on a switch 2.

You don't need to have a separate SKU to do a "port" to introduce DLSS. The size of a patch needed to "port" the whole game isn't reinstalling the game in every case, but just 1GB or less to replace the executable with a Switch 2 native compiled version.
