StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

My sources tell me they'll be incorporating a "Yeah..." feature, instead.
Ecf5suQWAAk0tgq.png
Well, they are actually just updating it to use an LA Knight clip for Wrestlemania.

There's a small chance they're going with a process that's not 4nm or 8 nm. That's harder to nail down.

Yep, if the clock speeds were to leak and we see portable clock speeds at 350Mhz, then its not going to be 4N and 8nm is back on the table as a possibility. I do think a primary reason the DF guys are thinking 8nm is because the RTX30 cards were Ampere based and were on 8nm. However if we look back at the Tegra X1, it is Maxwell based, and the Maxwell based graphics cards at the time were 28nm while the X1 was on the smaller 20nm. So the Tegra X1 is a shining example of Nvidia pairing a mature architecture with a newer smaller process node. This has been a weird one, because we could be looking at a processor that is either twice the size of the Tegra X1 if its 8nm, or a processor that is even smaller than the X1 if its 4N. I always revert back to the idea that if its 8nm, then there are a lot of problems that need solving pertaining to battery life and cooling. 4N on the other hand just works and doesn't bring along any of those problems. These are all things that Nvidia would have been well aware of during T239's development.

4.5 inches in height is smaller than the Wii U Gamepad's 5.3, which was also a device meant to be held for long periods of time and even carried around for off-TV play. I would say weight distribution plays a larger factor. The original Steam Deck could get uncomfortably heavy, to the extent where the OLED update made a significant difference despite having the same XY dimensions.

Is there any real basis to the notion that the Switch is 'massive' for kids? It's something I read a lot on forums but not reflected in real life (sales or anecdotally). I see kids play on their parents' iPads with the flimsiest grips and the Switch 2 will not be that large. I've handed the Switch to let a literal toddler cousin play Sonic 2 and heard no fuss.

I agree, given that the larger dimensions compared to the Switch now seem to be confirmed, I think everything will be about balance.
Personally I think that Steam Deck, in addition to being heavy, is also too unbalanced in the lower part, making it in my opinion uncomfortable for long sessions. Obviously for long sessions it is assumed that the mini PC is connected to the socket after an hour.
I hope Nintendo manages to balance the Switch 2 perfectly despite its larger size.

The Switch logo is literally the joy-cons. All of the trailers and commercials for every hardware and software so far have the click and joy-cons at the beginning.

Nintendo_switch_logo.png

How would having no joy-cons even work? They would literally need to do an entire rebranding.

The people yearn for a real boot sound.

If this thing is revealed in march, this will be my 5th streak of broken consoles before a new hardware is revealed.

3ds to New 3ds, ps3 to ps3 slim, ps4 to pro, switch to oled. Every single time they broke and I bought a new one, the next thing comes out.

The fuc….

This is the kind of content I crave for that I cannot find in any of the other gaming forums and the reason why I sigued up for a Famiboard account.

Thanks for that summary, it all makes sense now.

This is the HAT-001 Switch 1 devkit. No joy-con rails. It's a creature.

HAT-001_PLACEHOLDER-1920w.png

Source.

We have no idea what the Switch 2 devkits look like and their various iterations, especially if they're being shipped to devs over the course of a year, correct me if I'm wrong. It's possible some could resemble the above, others could have bolted on controls, others could resemble the final retail unit.
This picture is what was leaked in 2016 (or early 2017?) and so it's often used today when talking about the SDEV, but it is a prototype. The final SDEV has Joy-con rails.

But your point still stands, because Nintendo did go a long time without disclosing the existence of Joy-cons to most developers. They had separate versions of SDK documents where one was for a "public" audience (meaning, those other than individually selected close partners) and one for "private," where the latter had information on Joy-cons and the former didn't.

Since the new hardware can easily be controlled by any traditional controller and possibly even by current Switch Joy-cons, there's no need for Nintendo to disclose information about the new controllers, or "gimmick," or any of the other things that no one has been able to confirm about it (which is almost everything).

I can’t wait for march to arrive so that all this discussion and speculation on the next switch will continue on because they’ll just do a teaser and they won’t show any games that gives us an indicator for the specs of the system. At least we’ll see how big and hideous it and that could give us some ideas on what node they used. Also backward compatibility.

Seems like March will be a busy month then. Both in terms of the initial announcement, but also with devs probably having prepped their own announcements/marketing materials for the subsequent weeks and for GDC.

So maybe initial announcement the week of the 11th, leading into GDC the following week? That would put a solid month between it and the February direct as well.

The only thing that gives me pause is that Princes Peach Showtime isn't out until March 22nd. Maybe they wait until after that game is released?

GDC ends March 22st, so that won't work.

Finally the first part of the eternal discussion is reaching to an end in a month or so.

Hopefully this next HW fulfills all wishes and hopes of people around here.

I don't think they will reveal an exact release date but probably the release month

They're going to say "Fall" or "Winter" (or even "Late") and then we'll get to have our favourite discussion regarding definitions of seasons for the next 3 months until the "Summer" blowout.

Yeah late 2016 right before the official Switch reveal.

I definitely remember the confusion as people wondered where the controllers would go.

The last time they kept the same branding moving from one console gen to the next, it didn’t go too well for them 😜
We could also put it "The last time they shifted focus from a split control method from one console gen to the next, it went incredibly horribly for them."

There’s no reason to contemplate there won’t be Joy Con or a Joy Con successor unless:

- Someone has direct knowledge that they won’t be part of the new hardware

- They’ve received information they weren’t part of the current development kits.

With the second instance, it’s likely kits would ship with a standard control method and the new controls kept secret until the reveal.

Unironically asking, was there a summary posted of Nate's podcast? I listened to it twice yesterday but I am just not a podcast guy and it went in one ear and out the other.

Well this should now keep me from making another video on something already found here lol.
A belated welcome to the madhouse! It's all downhill from here so enjoy the ride haha

Pro-Cons

-Bigger
-Weightier
-Better ergonomics
-Better build quality
-Drift is a thing of the past

-Nintendo launches a new system
-New system name only has one character differentiating it from the previous system
-At a glance the system does not look too different from the previous system
-Lackluster launch lineup
-Nintendo has to address poor sales momentum within the first 12 months
-System is the Nintendo 3DS
-Sold 75 million hardware units
-pic unrelated

Nintendo has been able to keep their branding and have a successful successor. The biggest problem with the Wii U was the lack of high quality system sellers to get people's foot in the door until Zelda finally dropped. I don't see that being an issue this time around.

Something people need to take into account with wanting better Joy Cons and a more comfortable grip…

They need to also feel good when played in the NES and Wii styles. I think that’s what played a part in the shape of the current Joy Cons since they work with all forms of gameplay. Their feeling is quite neutral.

One would think they would have learned not to fall for the same traps from Switch 1 days.

ngl the worry is starting to kick in now regarding the next system, if we truly are in the last stretch before reveal

The power button on my launch switch recently broke and I bought an OLED recently as well.
Perhaps it's like summoning rain by getting a car wash. Perhaps we are to thank for any Switch 2 reveals coming soon.

Either way, it's exciting to see things finally start heating up after so many years of rumors.

Famiboards…

Over the last weeks I’ve taken all information with regards to the Switch 2 and fed it into the YolkFolk super computer in the YolkFolk cave.

I’ve asked for it to reveal exactly what the final Switch 2 will look like with no Joy Cons, a bulkier look & feel, better sticks & buttons and a camera.

Here is the result:

February

More seriously, I have some significant doubts that the initial reveal itself would leak unless it's basically a full Direct. Seems more likely that what would leak would be a follow up presentation to detail things more.

#teamleapday lives!

#teamleapday was always referring to the announcement day, definitely not the release day. Just... don't go back looking over my posts about it or anything.

The Steam Deck is the most comfortable of the bunch and I'm tired of pretending it isn't.

On another note, the increase length of the hypothetical Switch 2 joycon is a really nice thing. Probably will make it nicer to hold in the hands overall, I always found the Switch a bit to short in terms of it's height, so that would be a nice improvement imo.
I've gotten the chance to play my cousin's Steam Deck for a couple of hours, and I've got to agree. Initially, I remember people being put off by how it looked, but man, maybe it's because I'm old at this point the thing, weight and all feels so much more comfortable than the flatness of the Switch. Buttons are huge, and the control sticks feel like actual high quality control sticks, it's great.

GDC ends March 22st, so that won't work.

So my prediction of March 20th for a reveal still holds up then? Awesome.

Yeah late 2016 right before the official Switch reveal.

I just noticed looking at the IO in the back that it's using the Wii/Wii U PSU connector. Wonder how some folks interpreted that back in 2016.

Pro-Cons

-Bigger

-Better build quality
-Drift is a thing of the past

So is that a Pro, or a Con?

:devilish:

On one hand, if I'd known in 2021 that we'd have to wait until March 2024 for more beefy Switching, I wouldn't have anticipated it as much as I have :p . On the other hand, super glad to hear it's finally coming!

Also, just been listening to Nate's podcast, and I'm going to be honest: John is a much better co-host than MVG. Just generally more energetic, more articulate. Much more enjoyable.

Turns out the real Switch 2 was the Wii U we bought along the way.
