StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

If we're talking strictly bandwidth needed for 4k/120 fps, the PS5 has demonstrated that it can output 4k/120fps with just 32Gbps of bandwidth over HDMI 2.1 and bandwidth of DP 1.4a is 32.4 Gbps. I hope we can get 4k/120 fps because that can enable 40 fps output for some traditionally 30 fps games.
There's no HDR support at 4K 120 Hz if the max bandwidth available is ~32 Gbps (at least if Display Stream Compression (DSC) isn't used).

Also, 4K 120 Hz support isn't required for 40 Hz support since the Steam Deck has a 60 Hz LCD display and does support 40 Hz.

Nintendo should be worried now, a phone can run very demading games natively
I mean, technically iPhone 7 could run all the PS3 games but only received very few, like XCOM, Bioshock or Alien Isolation... No one else bothered to port their own games.

I'm disappointed Apple just shown a ray traced reflections demo. should have done something with all the functions!

at least devs can properly start making RT for mobile games. just got to wait on Unity and Epic to add support

who would imagine a phone would doom Nintendo, iPhone 15 without the console even launching
Phones have been more powerful than the Switch in raw specs for years now. Why are we acting surprised?

In 2017, when the switch launched the iPhone 7 was already more powerful (CPU wise, I believe the X1 still beats its GPU). That’s 6 years of phones being ahead. With that said, the X1 was still one of most powerful mobile chips at the time. It trounced all android phones at the time (including Nvidia’s own Shield devices). Only the Apple A series chip beat it in CPU performance, but that still shows that phones were always ahead (in some aspect). The iPhone tho, had less RAM, while Androids had similar RAM but lacked the SOC to compete.

Of course, I’m talking purely raw specs here. No 2017 phones in reality matched the performance of the Switch due to throttling and battery constraints even the said iPhone. The Switch also has the advantage of low level APIs accessible to devs.

  • Hardware accelerated ray tracing
  • MetalFX Upscaling with the Neural Engine
  • Assassin’s Creed: Mirage, Resident Evil Village, and Resident Evil 4 on ARM 👀
EDIT: Death Stranding too.
I'm not going to lie, but if anything can threaten the Switch 2, it's this.

mobile competition is much harsh now

I don't know if this will exactly be a huge Switch 2 killer, this is a $1000 device that'll likely be very limited after launch vs. an around $400 full on console.

yeah, depending on how invest Apple gets in the future of running console level games on its mobile hardware(phones and iPad) then Nintendo will definitely have some mindshare taken away.
Haven't we been hearing this song for years at this point?

I mean, would YOU want to play games like those on your iPhone? I wouldn't.

I play my console games (read: Switch) primarily on my big TV (so docked, which iPhone doesn't support natively), with a good gaming controller.

How sophisticated can iPhone gaming be if you only could use touchscreen, potentially side buttons, and tilting?

Not to mention I am not going to get Nintendo exclusives/1st party games on my iPhone.

Yes, for 800 dollars, you can have it at home, one for each member of the family-
Or just one for the whole house as if it were a console bought exclusively to play for 800 dollars.
You will also have the incredible pace of third party game releases supporting the iPhone (note the irony).

Yeah, people here are weird. Or have memory rivaling that of a goldfish.

If anything this should be encouraging. Perfectly encapsulates what is now possible on mobile hardware. Until smartphones start adding analogue sticks and dpads along with somehow having the next Mario / Zelda / Animal Crossing etc don't see why Nintendo would be worried at all.

Also wonder how long the battery is going to last on one of these running something like Assassins Creed maxxed out (without setting itself on fire).

Also yeh, look at the price. A PC that is 3 times the price of a PS5 would also destroy it in performance and serve a lot more all round usefull a purpose. Should Sony be worried?

These all serve very different markets

Wait are these "iPhone is gonna be the real competition for Switch 2" takes genuine? I assumed they were sarcasm/shitposts.

Hopefully I was right.

"Console like" iPhone Gaming already existed before and it never really was a threat to Switch. They were able to co-exist just fine. I believe this will continue with the next Nintendo console.

Though still I think it is impressive and definitely the future that I want; That any device can essentially run anything and that I don't need to buy a huge Gaming PC if I want to play certain games.

Phones will never replace traditional console gaming as long as people need their phones to do other shit.

I would be disappointed if a 2023 Apple mobile device marketed as a 'Pro' model of their flagship phone starting at $999 wasn't at least as performant as the Switch 2.

Seriously go look at the price again and tell me with a straight face that this is a Switch killer.

And we still don't even know how these games run.

To me, this looks like a bunch of developers I would trust with a Switch 2 devkit 🤭
Well, if they're gonna bring 2+ year old games on the launch day, it means they are not taking it seriously. I want recent as hell games in the launch window: Assassin's Creed Red, Star Wars Outlaws, Dragon's Dogma 2, Dragon Age wolf something. They can release the old stuff later at a budget price.

Hands down, I think this device might just barely match the Switch 2 in raster performance and perhaps in RT. I don't know how good Apple's RT is so enlighten me there.

Exactly. These developments are very encouraging for the industry in general. Always seen it that way with consoles too; everybody wins when something takes off.

Just you wait, mobile gaming will take over console gaming any days now...

Nintendo wishes they were competing in the over $1000 devices category. People keep forgetting that benchmark means nothing when phone need to downclocked heavily to run a game for any long period of time or to not overheat since there are no fans to cool the device.

This means there are version of those games running on ARM, isn't that actually good news? I mean all of those games are cross gen so they should not have any problem running on the switch 2

This. So much this. If Switch 2 can supposedly play the Matrix demo, then I want Tekken 8 on Switch 2 the day that system launches.

I have no idea. I was also taking MetalFX upscaling into consideration, I assume it's another AI powered upscaling solution. Though how it compares with DLSS, no clue.

All of these are PS4 games too. Some reactions are jumping the gun with 'current-gen console in your phone' and 'trounces the Switch 2'.

My takeaway is that if these games skip Switch 2, these publishers deserve a massive sideeye.

Porting x86 games to ARM is pretty much trivial these days anyway, it's an extremely overblown issue.

People make of course platform wars out of this, but I think it is cool!

It opens so much to get games to people if more devices actually can run (or at least get) those games. I know that this is a "Pro"-Device but it's still a statement.

History showed that Consoles are very likely here to stay, but even the Switch 2 will probably show that Sony and XBOX need to come up with new ideas than just "power" in the future.

DLSS will make sure phones will never catch up lol. The new switch will be much more performant compared to similar devices. The gap here is even much larger than they were with the X1.
